After a week-long road trip with the kids and eating a variety of foods we were ready just for some pizza. Liked the sound of good pizza in a quaint cottage from the reviews. Lola's is a little off the highway, and you feel like the GPS is taking you someplace wrong. But trust it. Up the hill into a cute wooded neighborhood is this hipster pizza cottage with a locals' feel. The pizza is good even though they did mess up two of the three made-to-order pizzas we had. The other two we ordered were from their specialty list. Probably stick with those if you don't want to risk them messing anything up. Not the most amazing pizza in the world, but very good. Definitely worth the stop, if for no other reason than to take a break from the highway and enter into an area of Charlston you might not otherwise see. read more

We have been to Lola's many times. Living in the area has its perks. But, I just don't get how the 5 star ratings are still coming. I love their sangria, the atmosphere, the eclectic ingredients. This last time, we ordered the meatball pizza and Monroe County beef pizza. The verdict? Bland. Really bland. Not bad at all. But, both were just ok. Given the ingredients, I really feel like there should be more flavor and it's just not there. I want them to do well, but I just can't see fighting the crowds (why???) for this pizza. read more

Well I love the taste and quality of the food (and service overall) however they forgot the goat cheese on my -goat cheese- salad. First, I've to admit I've never eaten their food. My rating is based on their service. Based on the awesome reviews of their pizza, my wife, children, and I decided to stop here for lunch around 1pm on a Sunday. The place was crowded. We waited for over 10mins and no one spoke to us. We were standing at the entrance close to the bar. I don't understand that four workers walked past us a few times and no one said a word to us! They were so busy making Bellinis that they failed to see there are other customers waiting. I know about 65% of restaurant income comes from alcohol sold, so this could be why we and other customers were ignored. In the end the other customers and us decided to leave. Where do I begin? Let's start with the parking. We didn't have problems parking since we arrived before the dinner rush, however, if you are planning on arriving any time after say... 6, you will have problems parking. Inside you find a pretty cramped seating area. We were put in the tiny room to the left of the front door along with a party of about 12 loud women who were out celebrating either a baby shower or bachelorette party - I couldn't tell. Regardless, they were loud and that tiny room didn't help the noise level at all. I had difficulty hearing my wife talking to me across the table. Now, we are usually the ones worried about making too much noise at restaurants since we usually have all four kids in tow, but this room/group set the bar very high. I told my kids to not worry about talking too loud, no one would ever hear you. Ok, on the the food. Lola's has a decent selection of beer, including local brews - gold star for them for supporting local breweries! The wine list looked ok, a bit over priced per glass, but ok. A couple salads and small plate appetizers are available but we didn't try them, we were there for the pizza! Aaaaand we were let down. The crust was nice, but the edges were too done and burnt in places. Once past the edges though it had a nice flavor. Toppings were average - nothing special. Our service was pretty bad, we saw our waitress 4 times - when we arrived and ordered drinks and ordered, when she brought out pies, and when she brought our check and returned with the copy to sign. That's it. Since we no longer live in the area, we probably won't be back as there are better pizza places in Charleston. read more

Carrie and friends have done something amazing, pleased those in South Hills and those coming up the Hill with her quaint pizzeria tucked in the middle of Charleston's South Hills area. Many accuse the area of being pretentious. Lola's is anything but. Carrie uses fresh, local ingredients to create pizza and salad works of art. The candied walnuts in combination with mixed greens, goat cheese, beets (of course) and a special vinaigrette dressing are tasteful and refreshing. I would recommend adding shrimp to the salad though it is an additional charge. The salad isn't large enough to share but is enough to count as a meal if you're opting for something lighter. The pizza is good, but i have to put 4 stars for the entire experience. The wait at 730pm on a friday was a grueling hour and a half. We were promised 1 hour and were all famished when that hour came and passed with no update in sight. Had we known we wouldnt be seated until after 9pm, we would have easily placed a to-go order, or headed downtown to the comparable if not better Pies n Pints pizza joint. When we were finally seated, the service was quick as if to be apologetic. We ordered 3 pizzas and the hands down best, by consensus, was the Hawaiian. Sausage and Onion was also good. The ingredients are high quality and the crust is thin but not overly crunchy. In short this seems like a great place to carry out. Great local alternative to Pie's and Pints...which is also somewhat local. My wife and I went here on date night after getting completely screwed by Vandala's. It was a toss up between those two and I'm glad it turned out the way it did because Lola's was great! Unlike Pie's and Pints the pizza's are a bit small and you can't really split the specialty pizza's so we both got a pizza. Pricing was great and they had a great selection of brews. At the servers recommendation I tried something from Rogue which was right on the money. The place has a definite hipster vibe to it, including the servers look, so feel free to wear whatever you like, even gym shorts on a Friday night. I had the Pesto Portobello and my wife had the Hawaiian Pizza. Both were good, service was awesome. The only complain I could have is it's a bit small and there can be a wait, and the parking lot was so crowded people were parking in places that weren't spots making it hard for us to get our mini van out...next time I'll back in. read more

We stayed in Charleston last night mid roadtrip, and this restaurant was just the loveliest rest stop! The goat cheese appetizer was very yummy as everyone's been saying, but for me the highlights were the portobella pesto pizza (also w/goat cheese and whole roasted garlic cloves), the Harpoon 100 Barrel Rye IPA as recommended by our server, and the coconut creme brûlée. I love this place!! The fried goat cheese "salad" is probably one of my top ten favorite foods ever! All the pizzas are fantastic too and have very unique ingredients. Visiting Charleston from MI for a family wedding. Searched Yelp for a great local restaurant and found Lola's. So glad we went! While the wait was over an hour due to the building being so small, it ended up being totally worth it! Service was fantastic, and the food was amazing. The sangria and beer selection was perfect for waiting outside. We enjoyed the goat cheese salad, spring rolls and salad special of the day. We also enjoyed the pesto portobello pizza, steak and onion and ground beef pizzas. Apparently the kitchen burnt our pizzas so we enjoyed free drinks during the short wait for our pizzas to come out. They were incredible! We also enjoyed sharing each dessert on the menu. Our favorite was the peanut butter chocolate tart. I would go back in a heartbeat. We were also highly impressed with the staff. We were in a pinch while waiting for our hotel shuttle to come and get us and they not only let us use their phone but personally called for us. The only thing I would change is not so much fig sauce I had to take some off. But the pineapple and ham pizza was my favorite! Even better than Pies & Pints! Lola's is set in what seems like somebody's house, which is substantiated by very homey-feeling service. The pizza itself is a little greasy but otherwise very delicious. I had the portabella pesto pizza (with pepperoni) and I loved how well the the different ingredients went together (especially the cheese, though I can't recall specifically what it was - ricotta maybe?). It's also worth noting that I usually hate mushrooms but they went perfectly on this pizza. One other menu item worth noting - the kale salad. In my opinion, the best restaurant in Charleston. We've been here many times, but never more than once a month. Still, several workers remember who we are & what we like. The wait can be long-ish on a busy night, especially if you've come in a group. The restaurant feels like a small house, so seating is limited. But they set up a charming front patio area where you can grab a drink from the bar & wait. I've never waited longer than it takes to finish one drink. Their drink selection is always good. They usually have a couple of drinks from Rogue brewing & Sierra Nevada. I usually go with the rogue good chit pilsner. They also have a wine selection that I haven't really delved into, but my gf switches between the red & white sangrias each time she goes. Both are good & very sweet. I start every meal here with the pan-seared goat cheese salad. That shit is amazeballs. It's not a lola's experience of you don't get that. All of the pies that I've tried here are great, but I'm sticking with the steak & cheese with jalapeños from now on. Make sure to ask for parmesan, they'll grate some off for you in a small bowl.
