After traveling from the north entrance of Yellowstone (Gardiner) across Lamar Valley we found ourselves in Silver Gate after going through the northeast Yellowstone gate. We were hungry and found the Log Cabin Cafe. This is a quaint establishment that takes you back to the 1940-50s before chain restaurants and frozen foods. As expected with some remote establishments they were out of a few fresh, local items, but still had some good choices. We had the chili, grilled cheese, tomato basil soup and humus. All were appetizing. Leave room for the self proclaimed "world famous" pumpkin bread. It is AMAZING, served warm with a great flavor and a gooey middle. It is worth the trip. read more

We've eaten there twice this summer and it's worth the drive from Billings. Chef Phreddy (Pronounced Freddy) is creative and innovative which may seen like the same thing but here's the reason I use these two words. My wife and I looked over the menu and discussed with our waiter Alexander the options we were considering. Alexander informed us that they were having challenges getting all the different food items due to Covid19. So Chef Phreddy uses his creative skills to come up with innovative takes on traditional offerings. I'm not a pork eater and have always avoided things chorizo... Chef Phreddy didn't have pork and he absolutely loves making Mexican cuisine so he concocted a beef chorizo enchilada that was as generous as delicious! I would have loved a margherita with this meal! The salsa was fresh and mildly spicy as were the amazing black bean side dish that had a special ingredient that knocked it over deep center field! Alexander was fun and engaging and had an interesting story linking his past to this cafe. Chef Phreddy usually brings your meal out which is a great time to get to know him. We will try to get back one more time before the end of September when they close to enjoy a great mountain area and the delicious creations from Chef Phreddy! read more

Such a cute little cabin! We ate here several times. The smoked salmon was delicious. Unfortunately, they were out of the regular salmon but the trout was very tasty. The breakfast was also very good traditional style. Their guest chef from Seattle was making some really awesome Mexican food. We ate at the Cafe several times during a recent 10d stay in Silver Gate, a small town in Montana near the remote NE entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The menu is stocked with local classics, including wild Montana trout and Wyoming buffalo burgers. The crisp salads and bright veggie-dishes deserve special mention considering the location as the next town is Cody/WY, population 9K, 80 miles. I find more than anything it's the people that make a great dining experience, and the Cafe is no exception. Here a blended team--owners, seasonal foreign kids and Yellowstone-locals--deliver quality Rocky Mountain comfort food and warm, attentive service. They even did a 3-course take-out on restaurant china for us one night when our youngest was feverish and stuck in bed. Highly recommend the Log Cabin Cafe. read more

After eating Yellowstone food for days, I'm so excited that we found this place just outside the northeastern corner of the park. In fact, we came two days in a row. The french toast, pancakes, sausage, ham, and potatoes were all fantastic. The pancakes were especially fluffy, and the potatoes aren't normal hash browns - they're real potato flakes cooked with onions and peppers. Also, the coffee is very decent (unlike the coffee served in Yellowstone). The pumpkin bread is fantastic - moist, flavorful, and not too sweet. We bought a thick slice each day and ate it throughout the day as a snack. Service isn't the fastest, but it's a small restaurant and the waiters are very nice. No takeout containers, just ziploc bags. read more

This place is awesome. I wasn't able to get a reservation in the cabin, but the trout breakfast is excellent. The trout was nicely cooked. It is farm raised, and not wild caught. Still delicious and very fresh. Make sure to order the pumpkin or carrot bread. It's moist and not too overly sweet. Also awesome and delicious. read more

Pancakes taste like baking soda and flour. They were out of butter and bagels. Toast was stale bread and super small for $3 (with no butter as mentioned). $3 for a 6-8oz oj that surely wasn't fresh squeezed. Later someone said we should have gotten the pumpkin bread. If you stop here, I recommend that you get that and move on. read more

If you were a lover of the original Mamma's Mexican Kitchen in Seattle and have a yearning for that wonderful food that was created by Chef Phreddy, then travel to the quaint town of Silver Gate, Mt. My husband and I were visiting Yellowstone National Park and met a couple that said they were staying in Silver Gate and that there was a small cafe there that had wonderful food. We were looking for somewhere different to try so we stopped there on our way to Cooke City, Mt. where we were staying. After talking with Chef Phreddy, he brought out one of his specialty dishes, portabella mushroom quesadillas. They were fabulous. If you are a mushroom lover, these are for you. We then ordered the enchiladas, one chicken and one chorizo, they were heavenly, best Mexican food we've ever eaten. The bad thing is that he was only going to be there another 2 days, but hopes to be invited back next year. If you plan on going to Montana and will be anywhere in the area of Yellowstone National Park make sure you stop in and eat at the Log Cabin Cafe. read more

We went to the Log Cabin Cafe after a long day of hiking as we wanted to eat close to our cabin. When we were seated I asked if they had any vegetarian options not really expecting much as it's a little challenging to eat vegetarian in the little mountain towns. Our waiter had Chef Phreddy come out and talk to us and he offered to make me vegetarian enchiladas. He asked me what I wanted in them, suggesting some vegetables they had on hand, and handmade them to perfection! It was an amazing meal! He came out during our meal and asked how everything was and suggested we come back after they got some mushrooms in and try his portabella quesadillas. We went back a few nights later, but it was Phreddy's night off. The waiter went and told him I was there for them and he came in on his night off made them for me. They were just as amazing as he described! I so wanted to eat the entire thing but couldn't finish them. So my husband, who is very much a meat eater, finished them off and he raved about them as well. I would have never expected to have such incredible Mexican food in a little mountain town in Montana! We ended up eating four of our 7 dinners at the cafe because everything we ordered (vegetarian or not) was just delicious! To have a place to eat that is not only delicious, but also have a chef and staff that are so passionate about their food and be so accommodating, was incredible! The food is surprisingly decent here. We had the impression that it had gone downhill or something, so did not come for dinner. But we did go for breakfast the next morning. The only issue with the place is the price. It is pretty expensive especially considering the portion size you receive. Very small portions, but the quality of the food is high and the choices are interesting. They recommended the pumpkin bread and it was indeed really good. Cream float on the coffee (but maybe its cos of the heat idk) and the food was okay. I ordered... salmon steak or something that start with fl or something, it was a plain salmon steak without any sauce. I think it would have been better if they had some sort of sauce but if you like your fish without sauce, its nice. The knife was dirty but the interior was cozy. I saw they microwave some ppl's food, I guess they don't cook it right away after the order, maybe they cooked it and reheat them. Id say the price was kinda overpriced but its close to the touristy place so maybe understandable. read more

This place (including the charming Silver Gate, MT) would be easy to miss if you blink coming or going from Yellowstone's Northeast entrance and what a shame that would be. We recently enjoyed an overnight stay in one of their adorable cabins and ate both dinner and breakfast in the cafe. As a vegetarian, they actually offered several dinner options including their ginormous burrito. Tasty stuff! Breakfast was hot, plentiful, and sure to get you ready for the busiest of days in the park or the surrounding area. Their pumpkin bread is a must-have. You may have been headed for Cooke City (which does have another favorite of mine), but be sure to save room for one meal at the Log Cabin Cafe. read more

We stayed in one of the two cabins and then ate five meals here over a week. As to the cabins, understand that you share a common shower/bathroom with the other cabin. If you are okay with that, and we certainly had no problems with that, I highly recommend staying here. Also, you get a full off of the menu breakfast as part of your stay. It was great! We stayed in the AirBnB cabins out back that are part of the cafe and they were awesome! We had dinner on the picnic tables and they let my dog get tied to our table while we ate and even brought him out a water dish while we ate! Then we had complimentary breakfast in the morning that was included with our AirBnB stay. Our cook, Phreddy was so good - he made his own delicious chorizo and had a full Mexican special list for dinner. I had never had green sauce on my enchiladas before, but now he's converted me! He came out after dinner and chatted with us and even joined us for breakfast the next morning when he wasn't working. It was a great and friendly experience! P.S. I'd eaten here before, and loved it, both because of the food and the service. Unfortunately, it's gone downhill in a big way. We drove down to Silver Gate from Cooke City for breakfast recently, and we seated ourselves in the unique dining room (no other option). The server appeared and took our drink order, gave us some menus and then disappeared. The place was busy, but it's always busy. The drinks appeared after a time, but there was no creamer on the table so I had to ask for it. I watched our server wander around the room for a bit refilling coffee, and then help a couple who came in for to-go coffee. The creamer showed up after several other tasks were completed--about 5 minutes after I got my coffee. She then took our order and I also asked for some sugar-free sweetener (she didn't have any--no biggie) and a spoon to stir my coffee. The silverware arrived after 5 more minutes, so by the time I got to drink my coffee, it was barely warm. And refills? An annoyance. My breakfast companion asked for a second soda, and the server said, "Do you want one now, or do you want to finish the one you have now?" My companion, noticing how long it took to get a coffee refill, asked for it now. But not until she had finished the drink did the server come by the table, grab the same glass and refill it. I had to resort to asking the other server on duty for coffee, because ours was annoyed by our sheer presence. Breakfast came, and my over-meduim eggs were over-hard. I ordered pancakes, but there was no butter or syrup on the table. I asked our server for some, and she asked, "There isn't any on the table? I'll see if we have some." She returned several minutes later to tell me that the only butter they had was in the fridge. I said, "That's OK." Then I realized she hadn't brought the butter with her, only stopped by to tell me it was "rock hard." At least she brought syrup! She brought the butter, again after wandering around the room for a bit. And, of course, by the time I got to eat my pancakes, they were cold. Not as cold as the butter, but cold. Had the service been up to par, I could have handled an over-hard egg. But cold coffee, cold pancakes (who doesn't serve butter with pancakes?), and having to ask and wait for every little thing soured me on the restaurant. Service matters, especially in places where tourists gather. I choose very carefully where to spend my money, and I won't go here again until servers are trained in the basics. read more

This was hands down the worst meal I have ever had! The bacon was not even bacon it was some rotten grey meat. Our French toast was not cooked and everyone's eggs at the table tasted like fish. I did not take pictures unfortunately because there is not cell service in this town so I left my phone back at the motel. Oh ya even out hot chocolate was just like hot water and they had to remake those. When we were asked by our server how it was we told her the truth that it was not very good and the manager or even possibly the owner was standing right there and didn't even acknowledge our statement just kept clearing the table. If you tour Lamar Valley your choice is to turn around and go back into the park or find food outside the park. We chose to keep going and found Log Cabin Cafe. The food in Yellowstone just isn't that great so stumbling into this restaurant with pancakes, french toast, sausage, bacon, pumpkin bread and clean restrooms was so nice after a long morning of watching bison. We went there for lunch today and definitely will never go back. I ordered meatloaf which appeared to be a bunch of coarsest ground meat formed with nothing other than the meat. Did not resemble any meatloaf I've ever eaten. I took a couple of bites and that was enough. We also ordered the tomato basil soup which was bland and tasteless. My husband had a grilled cheese sandwich which was fine. We talked to the owner and let her know our thoughts and she was nice but seems to be in denial about the quality of the food. Really cute, rustic restaurant, but the food was just ok, if not somewhat overpriced. What bothered me most was they charged $3 for a glass of tap water in a hard plastic cup with no ice even though one of us in our party of two ordered a beverage (beer) with dinner. We didn't realize they charged for water until we received the bill. Also, we asked for a to go box for leftovers, but was told they weren't providing them due to Covid-19. That seemed very odd because some restaurants in the area were only doing take-out due to Covid and other restaurants we did dine in had no problem with providing boxes for leftovers. The waitress was very sweet, but very overworked as she was the only server for the entire restaurant. As such, no fault of hers, but the wait for service and food was long. read more

Each entree comes with a side and the entrees range from $10-$15. We ordered them properly steak sandwich, the grilled chicken burrito, and tomato basil soup. All to die for. We had dinner here, and it was very good. I had a salad with grilled marinated chicken -- the lettuce was mixed leafy greens, cabbage, good cherry tomatoes, and mini carrots, with a nice garlic balsamic on the side. Healthiest food I've had in a week! My husband had a good cheeseburger with a good-looking bun, and tortilla chips. And a piece of old-fashioned blueberry pie. One of the best spots to eat outside the East exit of Yellowstone. First time we stopped here was just for coffee and ended up getting a slice of blueberry pie... AMAZING. We were so impressed we decided to go back for lunch the following day. Had the burrito with chicken very tasty and cheap. Tomato basil soup was delicious as well. For dessert we had pumpkin bread.
