An incredible deal at under $50
    David M.

About the best damn tenderloin I've eaten, and for under $50, including a loaded baked potato, veggies and a salad. Meat-eatin' just doesn't get any better than that. And the service and atmosphere couldn't be better. Make sure to stop on by when you're near Roscoe!

I was recently back in my home state visiting the fam. After a few days of just hanging out, catching up on things, we were itching to wander a bit, go for a drive. In Montana, the Big Sky State, a place of wide-open spaces, that's what you do-- pile the people in the wagon, pick a direction, enjoy the scenery and eventually stop at a wide spot in the road for something to see, do or eat. We took a drive from Absarokee to Red Lodge, on a two-lane highway that winds through some beautiful country. Arriving in Red Lodge we went to a weekend crafts fair. On our way back the tummies were rumbling so we talked about places to eat. There aren't many options on this stretch, two places really. We settled on the Grizzly Bar in Roscoe. Roscoe you say? Well, that's even what people in Montana say. It's as insignificant as they come as places go. Occasionally you will see a t-shirt on someone that says, "Where the Hell is Roscoe?" If you're in the minority you may actually know. Is it a well-kept secret? Not really. I've been to the Grizzly Bar many times over the years. It should check all the boxes for somebody like me: off the beaten-path, not a lot of people, local carnivorcentric menu, had Grizzly in it's name and a stuffed bear in the entry. Still, this place never rings my bell completely. That's a shame. I want to like it. I'm a little ashamed that I don't, like I'm betraying small towners everwhere, but the truth is, they don't all nail it. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this place depends on tourism, to the degree that out-of-wide-spot-in-the-roaders can actually find it anyway. Yet they don't give good service. There are some local yokels who seem to get the good love, but if you're not then you don't. Hey, I get it, everybody hates a tourist, but if that's what keeps you afloat then consider treating them cordially or changing careers. The burgers are pretty good but overpriced. The steaks are fine, but for the money there are better in any town on this highway. On this particular visit they delivered the wrong entree to one in our party. They fixed it quickly though. The Grizzly Bar is cute and all. I feel a little bad for the diss, but I have to be honest. There are so many places in this part of the state where the people really make a connection with you when you're there and I guess I'm spoiled by that. For a two-star, it is still worth a try in a pinch if you're willing to lower your expectations of service and pay more than you should for decent fare.

Service. Ignored for much of our very overpriced meal. Never again. Waited for service over and over again.

Best food I have had in the area. Was looking for a good cowboy bar in the area after moving from the great falls area.

The interior was a little on the dark side, but the warm, inviting vibe pulled us in. We navigated our way to the main section, finding two wonderfully comfortable plush blue chairs next to the bar. The small details immediately caught my attention--each table adorned with fresh flowers in charming vases, adding a thoughtful and personal touch. Our server was genuinely sweet and attentive, setting the tone for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. I did notice they have an outdoor patio out back, but the atmosphere inside was too good to pass up. We began with the spring pea salad--an absolute standout--featuring creamy ricotta, crisp snap peas, fresh mint, and pistachios. It was fresh, crunchy, and beautifully balanced. We added a slice of toasted ciabatta bread, topping it with the salad to make our own bruschetta-style bites, which turned it into a perfect little dish. Next came the spice-roasted carrots, which were every bit as flavorful as they were beautiful, followed by the pork belly barbecue with a blueberry barbecue sauce. The sweetness of the sauce paired beautifully with the rich pork belly, creating a dish that was both comforting and elevated. For drinks, I had the Jayne Mansfield--a bright, refreshing, and totally unique cocktail--while my mom enjoyed the Lauren Bacall, which she loved. The restaurant's name comes from a fun and memorable story: the owners were discussing their plans to open the restaurant when they spotted a one-legged magpie. It stuck--and now it's part of the charm of the place. One Legged Magpie delivers on every level: warm atmosphere, thoughtful touches, incredible food, and a sense of place you won't soon forget. If you're in Red Lodge, this is a must-visit spot.

The ciders are consistently great and we always make a point to stop in when we're in town. However, visiting in the off-season can be tricky. When we were there, only one employee was working the bar. We ordered a beer and a cider flight, but after we ordered several more customers came in and lined up. The bartender understandably tried to take care of everyone, but ended up serving at least six new arrivals -- pouring beers and running payments -- while our order never came. After about 20 minutes we had to leave, which was really disappointing because we were genuinely looking forward to it. This isn't a complaint about the staff -- she was clearly doing her best -- just a heads-up: if you visit during slower months, be prepared for limited staffing and longer waits (and possibly no food service). We'll definitely still come back... just maybe during busier season next time.

I was leaning towards something mediocre put there to drain the pockets of a would-be thristy, or perhaps hungry, passerby... We drove through the hoards of people to the outskirts, where the crowds thinned & the parking opened up to a large lot. Cool. So far, so good. The red building was easy enough to spot & there was music playing from a tent in the field. We headed for the building door from the back of the building and found ourselves sniffing the air... could that be house smoked meat? Yes, yes, it is... and making us walk by a smoker is a sure-fire (pun intended) way to get us to buy your food along with your beer! On to the bar we went, where we were met by an energetic 1 day a week worker. (We know because she mentioned it, we weren't THAT nosey!) She gave us a run through & we ordered our BOGO brews & an order of pulled pork tacos with black beans to split. Were they spicy tacos, no. Were they on flour instead of corn, yes. Was the pork tender, juicy, flavorful & smoky... YES! The black beans were a great side choice if I must say so myself & both paired well with our beer options. Dually Double IPA in at 4.5 for Kel - n/a from me Dog Pull Porter in at 3.75 from Kel & 4 from me Unfortunately, the only to-go option then was growlers & that didn't work for us at the time. Next time through, perhaps it will or crowlers (other options) will be available. We would indeed go back. On paying, they did miss the bogo beer & offered us our choice of refund and recharge correctly or 2 free drinks next visit. As we haf no idea when we'd be back, we sadly had to opt for the refund. I want to emphasize that it was NOT an international overcharge & it was immediately corrected.
