The Grizzly Bar has always had delicious food. It's always been on the pricier to expensive range. Their steaks are top - notch. I can't eat a huge steak. I'd rather have something less than 10 Ozan they got it. Always tasty. I got steak tenders this visit. Excellent is all I can say. Their burgers are always good. Salads? Who goes to a steak place for salad? Service was prompt for lunch today. I've never had bad service there and we've been going for roughly 23 years. Locals sit at the bar. It's a good place to get a beer after a day of hiking, fishing, or shopping in Red Lodge. It's not for everybody, but it's great for those who want to show down to Montana speed. I was recently back in my home state visiting the fam. After a few days of just hanging out, catching up on things, we were itching to wander a bit, go for a drive. In Montana, the Big Sky State, a place of wide-open spaces, that's what you do-- pile the people in the wagon, pick a direction, enjoy the scenery and eventually stop at a wide spot in the road for something to see, do or eat. We took a drive from Absarokee to Red Lodge, on a two-lane highway that winds through some beautiful country. Arriving in Red Lodge we went to a weekend crafts fair. On our way back the tummies were rumbling so we talked about places to eat. There aren't many options on this stretch, two places really. We settled on the Grizzly Bar in Roscoe. Roscoe you say? Well, that's even what people in Montana say. It's as insignificant as they come as places go. Occasionally you will see a t-shirt on someone that says, "Where the Hell is Roscoe?" If you're in the minority you may actually know. Is it a well-kept secret? Not really. I've been to the Grizzly Bar many times over the years. It should check all the boxes for somebody like me: off the beaten-path, not a lot of people, local carnivorcentric menu, had Grizzly in it's name and a stuffed bear in the entry. Still, this place never rings my bell completely. That's a shame. I want to like it. I'm a little ashamed that I don't, like I'm betraying small towners everwhere, but the truth is, they don't all nail it. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this place depends on tourism, to the degree that out-of-wide-spot-in-the-roaders can actually find it anyway. Yet they don't give good service. There are some local yokels who seem to get the good love, but if you're not then you don't. Hey, I get it, everybody hates a tourist, but if that's what keeps you afloat then consider treating them cordially or changing careers. The burgers are pretty good but overpriced. The steaks are fine, but for the money there are better in any town on this highway. On this particular visit they delivered the wrong entree to one in our party. They fixed it quickly though. The Grizzly Bar is cute and all. I feel a little bad for the diss, but I have to be honest. There are so many places in this part of the state where the people really make a connection with you when you're there and I guess I'm spoiled by that. For a two-star, it is still worth a try in a pinch if you're willing to lower your expectations of service and pay more than you should for decent fare. read more

Party of 10 super excited for a delicious steak dinner which we have experienced here in the past. Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience due the quality of the food we received (some we actually never even had delivered) and the owner's reaction and handling of our situation. Our initial drinks were delivered all over the place, some five minutes after others. The shrimp and steak were undercooked beyond being edible (steaks were blood rare when we ordered medium) and the chicken fingers were rock hard as if they were from the night before or cooked in old oil. Fries were super soggy. We never received our salads however they attempted to deliver them after our main course, it appears so they could still charge us for them. Owner/manager told us she would adjust the bill and then did not follow through with what she said she would do. My family lives in the area and will likely never be back due to the mishandling of an unfortunate experience. Most things can be rectified by how you handle your errors, unfortunately the owners mis-handling made it worse. read more

Our family has been coming to The Grizzly Bar for generations for evenings out, celebrations and for lunches after float trips down the Stillwater River. It is nestled in the foothills of The Beartooth Mountains of the Rocky Mountain Range. From wherever you are driving from you will enjoy the scenic drive over to The Grizzly Bar. Last night my husband Rick & I went for a dinner date. We each chose a Prime Rib Dinner which comes with a baked potato, side salad and a vegetable which last night was beautifully grilled zucchini . Even though "Social Distancing" was observed and in place the atmosphere was of celebrating life with your loved ones at each table. The service was exceptional and our server was delightful. Our meal was perfectly cooked and the Prime Rib dinners were so tender and juicy, probably the best we have ever had. The Grizzly Bar serves Quality Prime Beef and cuts no corners. Tucked away in close to being in the middle of nowhere sits The Grizzly Bar in Roscoe, MT. However, if you live in Roscoe or surrounding, it is THE PLACE also know as "The Griz." The Griz is nothing what I thought it would be upon arrival. What else would you expect from being out in Montana? Outside has a log cabinish feeling to it and you walk into a log cabinish feeling with a full bar, seating area and lots of people. The place is blended with locals, retirees and tourists. We even happen to bump into people that lived in Lakeview also? Odd. Cozy atmosphere. The food was wonderful and portions were plenty. I had a steak, which awesome. I usually don't get steak, but figured most of the people are ranchers and THEY would know how to make great steak. Girlfriend had grilled chicken salad, which was good. As nice as a place as it is, dress casual. Everyone wears blue jeans. Get a chance to talk to the locals and they'll tell you everything about the area and how they got there. You don't get the feeling that you are "treading on their turf" because of tourist taking up their place. "Where in the hell is Roscoe, MT?" I learned that this is the most common response when locals say they are from Roscoe. You need to find out where in the hell Roscoe, MT is and head out to the Griz. The Grizzly Bar is a MUST for anyone visiting the Madison Valley area. We eat here a couple times a week when we are in town, and it's always great. There are always a couple of real-life cowboys at the bar (fun people watching), and the daily specials are fantastic. You have to go. It's fun, and the food is darn good. There are a few loose ends, but you're in Roscoe, not St. Louis. Here's an important early sign that things will go well: the place is immaculate. Tidy, tidy, clean, clean, without being sterile. Plenty of personality, no grime. We began our evening at the bar. The drinks were mixed by Patrick O'Shea, the owner, who was a fun conversationalist. The bar was bright, welcoming, and smoke-free. (Side note: I just picked up on the Web that Patrick has put the Griz up for sale so that he can spend more time with his young kiddo; I can't predict what will happen if he leaves.) When we reached our table, we found that our server was grizzly, in a nice sort of way. He was perhaps a bit rough around the edges, perhaps dressed more for fishing than for serving, perhaps a bit too kinetic, but he was attentive, so what the hell. In terms of meal style, the Grizzly is a throwback. I don't know whether that's intentional, or whether Patrick doesn't know the difference, but it's been a long time since my salad was served in a big glass bowl for the whole table, with tongs and a stainless-steel three-dressing carousel (blue, ranch, and French). The tinfoil wrap on the potato was festive, but I don't like what tinfoil does to bakers--they end up dense and moist, not flaky. For some reason, I wasn't offered a carousel of sour cream, bacon bits, and chives. I got the toppings--it's the carousel that I missed. What matters most, of course, is the steak. My NY strip was big, thick, and correctly cooked to rare-plus. It had the character (not chewiness, character) that a strip is supposed to have. If you like soft steak, order a ribeye. My strip was far superior to the weakling that I got at the Carbon County Steakhouse in Red Lodge. The one weakness of the steak was mostly correctable. It was cooked and served without seasoning. You can add salt and pepper at the table, but it's better to season the raw meat. I know, some people want their steak unseasoned or under-seasoned, but I can tell you that a great steakhouse chef does more than heat meat. If a chef served you lasagna with oregano and garlic powder on the side, what would you think? Making the omission more painful, the menu offered a dose of the Griz's secret rub for only $2.99. So (1) they knew that a proper steak should be seasoned, and (2) they thought that I was crazy enough to pay three bucks for a half-ounce of seasoning. But I wasn't. My complaints are small. For a place like this, in a place like that, the Griz is a home run. And a sunset drive from Red Lodge to Roscoe is spectacular. read more

Good most of the time, but not even close to the best steaks in Montana. Had supper there for Fathers day. Spent $30 for the tenderloin and was rewarded with a flavorful, tender piece of meat that was ruined by overlooking. Pointed it out to waitress who said, yes its overlooked and promised to show it to kitchen. No offer of free desert, drink, or replacement steak. Generally we make the drive to eat here several times a year but it may be awhile before we go back again, or if we do I will order something beside a steak. The rest of the party had good food. I love the Grizzly Bar and when I come back to Billings, my first trip is a day on the river fishing with my dad and then we head to the Griz for steaks and beers. This place means a lot to us and although I get to do a lot of entertaining to some great restaurants, it's the Grizzly Bar that I crave. Great (B-I-G) steaks, nice people and after dinner we walk off some of the food coma along the creek before we head out. They're also nice enough to fill our thermos with coffee when we leave!! This is a bit out of the way but worth the effort. The lodge is good looking and rustic and once you've been there, you'll never wonder, "Where in the hell is Roscoe, MT?" Unforgettable. read more

Having eaten here several years ago and having a great meal we ate here recently. It was horrible. 3 people had deep fried fish in some form and 4th person had grilled scallops. They were not that busy but it still took 45 minutes for us to get our meal. One fish and chips was not fully cooked. One dish was unetible due to old greece being used in the fryer. The scallops dinner was served10 minutes after everyone else. The bake potato was not brought for another 15 minutes. The scallops were small and soaked with grease. The waitress was embarrased and did not stick around too long to see how our meals were. I will not be recommending this place to anyone. I think there is a problem in the kitchen with their cook. The prices are high based on a good reputation. We will not be back! read more

We have family in Montana (Fishtail) and went here recently for dinner. It was very good, particularly the steak and seafood. Their scallops in particular were fantastic. They also have local Red Lodge Ales on tap, which is nice to see, as we always like to try local brews wherever we travel. The only thing we were not thrilled with was the salad, it was kind of dull and they gave us these little plates to eat it off of, with a large community bowl to dish it out of. And some of the dishes felt a little pricey, it's a mix between $$ and $$$ that are listed here on Yelp... but then, it's probably the best steak in a wide radius. Oh, and we got the Grizzly Rub on the steak. It wasn't as flavorful as we were expecting and not worth the extra $3 you have to throw down for it. Still, definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. We'd go again. read more

Used to be amazing. I've eaten here many times over the last 30-40 years, and had always loved how the steaks were prepared and the service. I haven't been going as often for the last 5 years or so, as the steaks as of late have leaned toward "nothing special" and the service has been nothing to write home about. The atmosphere is still top-notch. I still try to make it here at least once each summer, especially if I'm hiking in either West Rosebud or East Rosebud. read more

For burgers, you now have to pay per topping, including the grizzly rub, and it starts out at $11 with no toppings! There are plenty of better, cheaper burgers around. Excellent burgers served all day (the menu makes it seem like lunch only). They have very good made in the house ranch dressing. My table ordered three burgers, they all came out excellent and juicy. I would recommend getting a side of ranch to go with the french fries. The location is only about two minutes off the highway. I would highly recommend the burger with onion rings and barbecue sauce, do you jalapeños on and give me a very nice spice flavor. This place is a little outside of Red Lodge but worth the drive. The scenery is beautiful and we saw several deer on the drive. I order the tenderloin and it was awesome. Best steak I had in Montana. My wife ordered the shrimp and they were huge and tasty. Some of the biggest I've seen. I would recommend this place to anyone. Most dishes are $25 to $34, which includes a salad and two sides. However you can order off the lunch menu at dinner which is in the $12-22 range. The burger looked awesome. They also had kids meals for $7, which I consider a good deal given the quality. This was my first trip to the Montana mountains and on the way down, we stopped at this place. I had one of the best, juiciest burgers of my life and locally brewed beer (and at a decent price, too)!
