I absolutely loved my experience on the llama hike. This review is just for the llama trek, but maybe next time I will consider staying at one of the cottages. First of all, llamas are my favorite and so to be able to walk a llama like a pet was a dream come true. I got to meet Cody, Burt, and Ty Ty, who were all friendly and well trained. We did the ocean bluffs hike, and the woman in charge, Dana, was really accommodating to our plans (it was all tentative because of the rain). We were in contact prior to that weekend, and she was quick with emailing me back which I really appreciated. She even emailed me while I was enroute from Oakland to wear boots because it will be wet, and I had been debating over my shoe options! So thoughtful. She planned a fantastic hike for us and set up an adorable little picnic table for my bf and I, and it was all perfect (gorgeous day too after a day of rain). read more

Besides lodging, Lodging and Llamas has some wonderful treks through the woods and the cliffs where the llamas carry your belongings along with the picnic supplies. I never thought I would befriend some llamas but that's what happened. Cody and Lucky were great, they were friendly, smart and followed you very well. I do have to warn you about Cody's frequent bathroom breaks but you can not blame him when he goes to the bathroom WHILE eating (check out the pics). The owners, Dana and Mike, are great also! Dana had set up a picnic on a cliff for us to enjoy the view along with some wine and hors d'oeuvres. By the way, you can pick out different options for wine and hors d'oeuvres, cold or hot. My next visit to Mendocino will definitely involve the llama trek through the Redwood Grove. Can't wait to see Lucky and Cody again! read more

Okay, I'm going to try to be subtle about this rental as much as I can possibly be but it's gonna be extremely difficult... Warning! Long read! ~ It's that good! A surprise birthday vacation for yours truly so my guy says to pick anywhere on the Coast I'd like to stay, money no object, get what you want. After spending days looking online, I picked out a few places up and down the Mendocino coast but wasn't interested in the standard 'room with a view and walk to the beach'. I wanted a separate cottage with privacy, hot tub, bbq, and interesting environs, and a little history. Did I find it? Ohhhhhhhhhhhh yes! What can one say about Fort Bragg? I've visited countless times, did the Skunk Train, Glass Beach, the shops, restaurants, just about everything in town, but NEVER even knew about Noyo Harbor! A world unto itself, Noyo Harbor Basin may not appeal to many... It's rustic (meaning a LOT of it is rusty!), historical, laid back but active, very interesting, and easy walking distance to numerous fine restaurants and ocean-based activities whether whale watching excursions, fishing trips, or simply peering over the edge and catching glimpses of sea lions and pelicans. ~Captain Jack's. Yes! Contacting Dana was easy but she is very busy, understandable keeping llamas and doing treks. She might not get back to you in 5 minutes but she will within the day. Booking was super simple. Half up front, balance on arrival. Our quote was all inclusive, no wishy-washy nonsense. Captain Jack's. Yes! A separate house (not gonna say 'cottage') located in a small community of vacationers and permanent residents with their fancy RVs at the foot of N. Harbor Drive, surrounded by restaurants at the entrance of Noyo Harbor. Laundry facilities on site and surprisingly quiet (we probably made the most noise!) Captain Jack's is a beautifully kept modern home, all inclusive with amenities though on the smallish side. My guy is 6ft 4, and he LOVED it! This house is simply wonderful! Full kitchen (no dishwasher, sorry), queen bed in a private bedroom with mirrored closet doors, upstairs loft for kids (4 ft high---watch your heads!), relaxing front room, dining area with view of the channel, the patio, hot tub, etc, etc, ... And all comforts are catered to: towels, coffee, a full size refrigerator, extra blankets, cable and Wifi access (though I was too busy to figure it out, sorry!). Altogether, simply wonderful. The owner has the worst manner. I first contacted her in July as I was looking for a llama trekking package for my daughter's birthday. After calling and emailing again, she eventually got back to me, and told me she can't promise it is available. I told her I have booked the lodging at Litter River Inn but we want to change the weekend to accommodate her schedule with llama trekking. My guess was that she was super unhappy we were not staying at her lodging but just want to book trekking experience, this is what she wrote back "My primary job is lodging. The trekking is a fun side job! My primary everything is my SON! As I see you know!So I cant commit to anything before I have my sons schedule and housekeeping covered.You should just cancel then." This woman has attitude, horrible manner, I strong suggest not to book her service. read more

My family planned a 5 day visit to Fort Bragg, and I found L&L by searching the web. The images on their site are pretty true to life. Our experience with the owner was limited to email and phone mostly, and she is a bit slow to respond. Though, when she did respond she was courteous and very accommodating. We reserved the whole site, plus we brought an RV to park, which was great. It is dog friendly, just be aware of their whereabouts because there is a friendly dog on the property, plus chickens and (of course) llamas. The llamas weren't too crazy about our dogs. This place is rustic, but comfortable. We stayed in Alder Cottage with another couple with a child. The child slept on a roll-out bed in the living area. It worked out well. The large houses both have full size refrigerators. Keep in mind, Alder Cottage is best for groups to hang out, as it has a pool table, and the larger kitchen/dining area. The Garden Tower has a small fridge. My parents stayed in the Garden Tower, which was nice. It's a little more modern. Compact, but roomy enough for two. Beware of the stairs to the loft, they are very steep. Use both hands going up, and probably come down backwards to save yourself from falling forward. Seems a little dangerous to me. The tower also has a futon down stairs. A few of us used the hot tubs, which were in great condition, and had digital controls. The bathroom towels smelled musty, but that might be due to the fact that we were on the coast. They may get moist from the humidity? I do not know. Well, we ended up using our beach towel. You may want to being your own bath towels, just in case. There is a picnic table that is in the middle of all 3 houses. It was a great spot to converge. We tried eating outside for as many meals as we could. Plus, shopping at the local Safeway and cooking for ourselves saved us a ton of money. And gave us more time to visit. This spot is about 2 miles from down town Fort Bragg, and a short drive to the town of Mendocino. A short drive to many beaches. L&L is also super close to the Botanical Gardens- which was a great spot. Before going, be sure that there aren't any weddings happening during your visit. There was one on a Sunday- and my sister had to quickly change her plans to go when the wedding was not happening (in the Dahlia section). For the money- this is a great place. It comfortably suited 5 couples, plus 5 little children. And, space for an RV. In the end, everyone was pretty pleased with the space. We can recommend Lodging and Llamas. read more

This is a review of the process of *trying* to book a room at Lodging and Llamas, and our interactions with the owner. We did not stay here. We were looking for a quiet, eclectic spot for our 3-day Honeymoon. It was down to this place, and one other spot in Mendocino. My fiancee got in touch with the owner to ask a few questions, and reported back to me that the woman had been surprisingly rude to her on the phone. Assuming that this was just some personality mismatch, I called Dana myself. Sure enough, she was almost laughably rude. She responded to my questions as if they were a terrible burden, and as if I were an utter idiot for not already knowing the answer. Nevertheless, it was the week before the wedding so we decided to take our chances and book it. We called back the next morning to confirm our reservation, but we were unable to get Dana on the phone. We left messages on her land line and her cell phone that day, and the next, and the next, reminding her that this was our *Honeymoon* and that we really needed confirmation. Finally, four days later -- just a few days before the wedding -- I sent her a text and asked what the heck was going on. She replied that the room was booked. Could someone have swooped in during the few hours after we spoke on the phone and booked this eclectic little spot? Of course. Nevertheless, I can't recommend staying at a lodge operated by someone who is so blatantly disrespectful to her customers. read more

My sister and our 3 "kids" (ages 10, 22 and 24) stayed here one night in May 2013. We stayed at the Alder "cottage". I have skimmed through the reviews and people seem to either think this place is great, or really be turned off by it, like we were. First of all, it's not a "cottage", its something like a double-wide trailer turned into a house. When we opened the door, an unpleasant smell hit us. The best I can describe it is "chemical". We speculated maybe carpet cleaner. The place is mostly carpeted, and the carpet does not look clean, but maybe there was an attempt at cleaning it. None of us, even the 10-year old, wanted to take our shoes off and walk on that carpet. We opened the windows and tried to air the place out. The 10-year old even made a valiant attempt to over come the smell by picking some flowers and putting them in all the rooms. Nothing helped. Beyond the smell, the place is just run-down. I don't usually mind that in my travels, IF that's what I've paid for. In this case, I felt we were paying way too much to stay in a run-down, overpoweringly stinky place where we didn't even want to take off our shoes. We also had to laugh at the "large private spa" outside, which consisted of a spider-infested hot tub in the weed-filled backyard. Wow. Final comment is that the keys did not work in the locks and we were not able to lock the doors to the house. We had booked for 2 nights, but mainly based on the overpowering odor, we stayed only the first night. The next morning, we left and found 2 rooms at a lovely B&B on the edge of Mendocino, for the exact SAME PRICE as we would have paid to stay that night at Alder "cottage." When I explained to Dana why we were leaving early, she was very defensive. She couldn't imagine what smell the 5 of us could possibly be referring to, she basically didn't believe the keys were not functional; she was completely lacking in grace or customer service. That was probably the most disappointing part of all. I would not recommend at least Alder Cottage to anyone, unless they are sure they know what they are getting into (NOT what is described on the company website) and are satisfied that it's worth the price they are paying. read more

I loved this place! I couldn't find any reviews, so I didn't know what to expect. I chose it because I happen to love llamas, and, well, it's called "Lodging & Llamas"! We stayed in the Water Garden Tower, a cute cottage built around a water tower. The main floor has a comfortable futon, a large tub with jacuzzi jets, and a full kitchen. There is a beautiful picture window that looks out on a serene pond. Everything felt very fresh. Upstairs, in the water tower space, is just enough space to fit the queen-sized (I think) bed. There are some crazy stairs to get there, so people with mobility issues may want to stay in a different cabin or just stay downstairs. The llamas are accessible, but weren't very sociable. I used to visit a llama neighbor & he was much nicer. The goats on property are much friendlier. They do have llama treks, but we just couldn't get it together in time to reserve one. Maybe next time. Also, the Botanical Garden is across the street & shouldn't be missed! read more

This is a review of the water tower cottage. The owners have setup the booking and check in service so they have as little contact with the guests as possible. Other than booking the room, we had no contact with the owners at all. We were provided with directions to the property which was unlocked when we arrived. No one checked to see if we arrived or if everything was satisfactory. When we left, we had to leave a message on an answering machine. Kinda weird. The room was setup to accommodate up to four adults. This was done by using a futon as the only comfortable seating in the place. I don't remember the comedian who said futons were filled with hate but in this case, the statement is correct. Felt like sitting on bricks after about 20 minutes. We came up for three day after the holidays to decompress and chill. Hard to do with no comfy place to sit. Maintenance was a joke. The thermostat was hanging from it's wires. The black mold in the tub was gross. My wife scrubbed it for twenty minutes before we were willing to shower in it. Neither of us was was willing to take a bath. The large and fancy clock had dead batteries. The freezer door was broken and came off in our hands whenever we opened it. The coat rack fell off the wall if you tried to use it (noted in guest book by previous guests). The patio was crumbling into the pond behind the room. The place was just dirty in general. To be fair, it's pretty affordable by local standards. It's in the middle of everything you go to the Mendocino coast for. It's also pet friendly. The Llamas are nice too. Ditch the futon and replace with comfy chairs or a love seat. Replace the CRT TV with a flat screen\DVR combo unit. Get real internet (512KB, really?). Make sure everything is clean and functional. Unlikely we will return. read more

We stayed with Lodging and Llamas about a month ago and loved it. We stayed in the cypress cottage and found everything to be just right. The cottage has a small but adequate kitchen (no dishwasher), tv, dvd, and HOT TUB. We were right across the street (ok, Highway 1) from the Mendocino Botanical Gardens-- which was very cool. The Llamas, goats and the dog provided plenty of entertainment. Had a great time, we plan on going back soon read more

My husband and I booked a llama trek through the redwoods (without a lodging reservation). Dana was a very personable and gracious host. The trek was beautiful (especially the waterfall we visited), the lunch was delicious (Dana sets up a camping table and provides food and wine), and the llamas were very endearing and cooperative. I would recommend this activity for anyone who is curious about llamas. Quite a unique and enjoyable experience. read more

I have no llama affection, but I freely admit that the sheer randomness of Lodging & Llamas appealed to me. They seemed more like sheep, or cows, but we did manage to snap a silly picture that the media naranja promptly dubbed, Lothario, King of the Llamas. We also stayed in the Water Garden Tower. It's perfect for two people; wouldn't recommend squeezing another on the ottoman downstairs. The 'upstairs' is literally just the bed. We did a little cooking in the kitchen, hung out on the deck (has a bbq), watched some dvds, jacuzzied up [if you require bigger, outdoor tubs, stay in one of the cottages], and used this as a jumping off point for a few days of doing very little in mendo. if you didn't already notice, this place is definitely not downtown, so you're signing up for driving any time you want to go out. would be a bummer in the east bay, but worked well for this area. read more

I had the most wonderful stay here last Memorial Day Weekend with my son and his girlfriend! Everything was perfect! The owners were really nice, too, and made sure everything was to our satisfaction. It was so neat to wake up in the morning, get your cup of coffee, and walk around the grounds saying hi to the llamas and horses. Night time was beautiful as well, and we liked to sit on the bench in the front yard and lean way back to watch the sky. We told ourselves that we couldn't get up from the bench until we all saw a falling star. And we did, a few times. Capping off the evening in the hot tub with a nice bottle of Pinot Noir picked up from Toulouse Vineyards on our way up was divine. Such a lovely place. The location was perfect. RIGHT across the street from the absolutely magnificent Mendocino Botanical Gardens. When you buy admission, you get in and out privileges all day which was awesome. We could run home, make lunch, soak in the hot tub, then come back. The house itself was nothing fancy but it was clean, well-appointed, and perfect for our needs. The kitchen was well-stocked and the bathrooms had lots of towels. There was also extra bedding if you needed it. There was also a DVD/VCR, TV, and stereo system in the living room. Not to mention the POOL TABLE in the middle of the living room! We had SO much fun staying here! The location couldn't have been more perfect. It was a short drive to Mendocino Village, Fort Bragg, and a shopping center where we were able to buy provisions, including barbecue stuff. We went horseback riding, to an arts and crafts fest in the Village, Glass Beach, Noyo Harbor, MacKerricher State Park, and on lots of walks. The lawn in front was fun for tossing the Frisbee, football, and kicking around the soccer ball. We had a blast staying here. I highly recommend this place, but almost reluctantly because I don't want it to be booked when I want to come back. :) read more

Filthy dirty. Yelp usually treats me right but this time not so much. Pros: clean hot tub, beautiful front yard to lounge in, Llamas were cute, location close to Fort Bragg. Big. Yes, there was a pool table. Massive amounts of birds including tons of humming birds. Clean sheets and towels. Cons: The dirtiest place I have stayed ever and we aim for inexpensive lodging often so I don't feel like my standards are that high. I considered asking for my money back. The carpet was so disgusting that I never took my shoes off except to get into bed. Mold encrusted in the windows. Linoleum peeling up, trim missing from front door and nails sticking out. Broken curtain rods and bathroom towel racks. Walls either dirty or stained. The smell of ammonia did not cover the smell of this place. Many of the windows were missing screens so we couldn't open them because the windows were low to the ground and we didn't want to worry about our dog jumping out. This mattered because of the smell. We opened all the windows we could for the first two days and that helped. It made it quite cold though as there is no heat just a space heater. You get 1 roll of tp and then you're on your own. No toaster. A new coat of paint, cleaning the mold out of the windows and incineration of the carpet and this place could be 4 stars if not 5. If you're not picky and the kind that thinks Motel 6 is 4 stars then this is a great place because the setting is really beautiful. Also, if I knew what I was getting into it would have been different but after reading the yelp reviews I had expectations that the place would be clean as well as cool. read more

I had mixed feelings about L&L. I booked a getaway with the kids to give my husband a break, and was super excited to go here. Dealing with the owner was always curt business - there were no warm fuzzies from her when I chatted by phone or communicated by email. I stayed at Alder, and it is spacious, but not cozy. Everything felt flimsy and old. They have this brown carpet that gives you the heeby jeebies, and everything kinda smelt like dog (they're allowed to stay here), with cleaning product over the top. There is a hot tub that you can't adjust (I guess the heat has been abused in the past), and it is set in a nice wooded setting, though the backyard is full of flowers meaning you can't use the backyard at all, except to look at. There are some llamas or alpacas (I get confused between the two!!) at the adjacent property that has an ELECTRIC fence!! Don't let the kids wander!! Having said all of that, it was pleasant enough. There's tons of room, the price is right, it is close to everything, and there are enough of the comforts from home that you can settle in should you want to. Just don't expect magic. This really is beach house crash, and nothing more. read more

This is a review on TRYING to get a reservation in one of their lodgings and for a llama trek.....still waiting for a reply. My husband and I decided to celebrate our upcoming wedding anniversary by going to Mendocino. I was looking at all the hotels and came across lodgings and llamas and knew this would be fun...hasn't been so far. First of all their website does not allow to you to actually do any reservations via their site. You have to call or email them. I called and no one answered so I left a voicemail message stating my name, the cottage I was interested in and the potential date and that we would also be want to do a llama trek, in my message I also stated the occasion would be for our wedding anniversary. I didn't receive a callback and so decided to send an email next. Once again I stated the cottage we were interested in and that we would want to also do a llama trek. The owner must not need money or any business because I never heard back from her. At the time I hadn't read the reviews but now that I have, my experience just trying to get a callback or an email back has been bad just like some other people have shared. What makes it particularly frustrating is that we cant just sit and wait for her to decide to contact us, because we need to book a reservation soon as most places start to book up pretty fast. Already some other places I initially looked at are now booked for the weekend we wanted. Horrible way to run a business. At the very least the owner could call back or email back and let me know if they have no room. read more

I did not stay overnight but I booked a hike with the llmas. I tend to like out of the ordinary experiences you can say. Hiking a llma on a leash would fit the bill for out of the norm. What a great experience! It was a beautiful day and I got to hike a llma on a leash by the ocean. The owner set up a lunch, wine with table and chairs by the ocean with the llmas. This was such a unique and wonderful experience! My only complaint is walking through tall grasses... I was afraid I might step on a snake which I am terrified of. We randomly found this place while searching on Google. I have to admit, this was one of the BEST mini vacations we've had. We stayed at the Alder Cottage and it was clean and comfy! The kitchen is big with a real stove/oven, unlike some of the other cottages we've stayed in while visiting Mendocino. We cooked breakfast every morning and had no problems! The dishes/cooking supplies are more than adequate (and we had 4 people with us). The area is quiet and soothing! My toddler daughter LOVED it as well especially since there's a pool table there. She went and played with it every chance she got saying BUBBLE BUBBLE BUBBLE (in reference to the balls). We loved greeting the llamas every morning and evening. We also signed up for the llama trek, never did something like this before, but Cody and Lucky were super great traveling companions. They knew she's a baby and let her pat them. Lucky leaned over and braced himself in case she started to whack, but she was gently. We also took along our dog and they would get out of the way if they sensed he was next to them so he could walk in front. Oh yeah, and their resident dog, Sam, is a sweet gentleman!! He greeted us every time he saw us and we paid him back with belly rubs! I can't wait to go back for another mini getaway!!! We loved being back with nature! read more

Well, the names says it all.....Lodging and Llamas. It's not an Inn or hotel but it was great for our family of four and our dog. If you are looking for a romantic place, this probably is not for you. We stayed in the Adler Cottage (it wasnt really a cottage but a modular home with a native Californian garden). Two bedrooms and two bathrooms, decent living space with pool table and full kitchen. Close to everything, quiet, and private. Bbq and hot tub. Not fancy but functional. Perfect for families! Cant beat the price. I didn't mind the lack of interaction and Dana and I had no problems communicating during booking. My boys want to make it an annual trip! The kids loved it (ages 9 & 11) and we enjoyed our time! read more

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Lodging and Llamas! We stayed in the Garden Tower with our two dogs and it was just perfect. The Garden Tower is a quaint little cottage... about 400-500 square feet. It's sort of tucked away "behind" the other two cottages and I felt offered more privacy. It had a little back patio to eat your breakfast with a wonderful view and plants and vines everywhere. The cottage had everything we needed (except food, which we brought) already in it (i.e. electric stove/ oven, pots & pans, dishes, utensils, bedding, pillows, towels, tv/ dvd, radio, etc.). There is a little futon couch that you could pull out to sleep one or two other people if necessary. The stairs up to the upper bed are steep, but kinda cool, so be aware if you're a person with bad knees. We managed them just fine. We didn't get to go on a llama trek, but the llamas are right there to see and so fun! Right across the street is the Mendocino Botanical Gardens which we visited with our two dogs and they were beautiful! All in all, a great experience, we will be back for sure! read more

The first time we stayed in the water tower, a small but cozy and creatively done conversion of a real water tower. The next time we booked the Cypress room, which was a complete disappointment. It stank so badly we had to open the windows to stand it. Decor-wise it ranked somewhere between rustic and junkyard. Paying an additional pet fee for a place that smells worse than the llamas added insult to the injury. No apologies from the owners either. read more

IF I COULD LEAVE A -5 I WOULD!!! This is a horribly ran vacation rental. We found them online and were quoted $95 a night for a party of 8 to stay at the Cypress Cottage. We called for 2 DAYS with no response. When we finally got ahold of the property managers she was INCREDIBLY RUDE, told us that the site had misquoted us and that it would be $200 a night. When asking why it was so much more than quoted we were told that they charged PER PERSON, which it says NO WHERE on their information. When we told her that was more then we has budgeted for she PROMPTLY HUNG UP!!! This business is a sham! It has horrible reviews online and now I know why. Please save other travelers our misfortune and REMOVE THIS VACATION RENTAL. All it is heartache and leaves a very bad taste in your mouth. read more

We were so very excited about our weekend visit to Lodging and Llamas this past weekend. Unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations....The Pros: It is a beautiful and peaceful setting. It is convienently located to Mendocino and Fort Bragg, glass beach, Skunk Train etc. The cons: Im handicapped and no where on the website or when I talked to the owner did they mention that the stairs in the Water Tower are very challenging. They are narrow and steep and the left side is not even with right side (sort of like a stairmaster machine) I crawled up the stairs to the loft only to find it had a major ant infestation. We could not sleep there. Luckily we had brought an air mattress and sleeping bags so we crammed those into the lower level and slept there. I tried multiple times to call the owner but every time the phone answering machine would come on and then she would pick up say hello and then we would get disconnected. Also we went to cook dinner only to discover the dishes were dirty so we had to was them all before we could use them. I wanted to like this place so much. Maybe your experience will be better. read more

This place is absolutely HORRIBLE...and we didn't even stay there.Their website claims they had a Llama trek but when we booked,they failed to tell us the llamas weren't even available.They charged us 1 night and when we told them we did not want to stay if the llamas weren't available, we were told there were no refunds.After arguing about falsely advertising "llamas AND lodging," we were told they would send me a refund check.We were told that on the 5th of August and it's now the 23rd of August.Both my girlfriend and I have called SEVERAL times only to be told " the check is in the mail."Several emails have been sent as well and still nothing.While the owners seem to think money grows on trees and that the $150 they owe me is not a big deal,that couldn't be further from the truth.We both live paycheck to paycheck and have been saving up to be able to take this trip for my girlfriends birthday. We were so excited to have such a unique experience only to be let down on so many levels.The owners of this lodge should truly be ashamed of themselves. read more

The house we rented was OK, for an older home. However we had a problem with the hot tub from the first night we got there. Called and left a message the next day and did not ever hear back from the owner's. Hot tub stayed at 90 degrees and had an error message, we tried to reset it, over and over but it kept telling different error messages each time. One of the main reasons we went with this house was for the hot tub. To say the least, we were no pleased, especial the 5 & 3 years old grandsons. So a month late we get contact from the owners request $90.00 for the repair bill stating that had left a bathing suit in the hot tub and it was sucked through the pump...... I don't think so. I am not going to loose my swim trunks in a hot tub with my daughter, son. daughter in law, and 3 small grandsons and my wife all trying to use it also. In fact how can you loose your suit if you can even get in the hot tub. The owners, Mike and Dana are really of over reacting to this also. Maybe it could have been the party that stayed before us ??? We loved our trip to Fort Bragg area and will make this an annual trip, but we will make sure to stay somewhere else! read more
