I was trying to find someone to do my mom's makeup for my wedding and Serena totally came through -- she made my mom look so young and beautiful! I couldn't be there while my mom's makeup was being done, but my mom says she was super sweet and accommodating. Music to the ears that she was comfortable and happy with Serena's great work! On a separate occasion I also booked a facial with Serena. It was my first time ever getting a facial and I was a bit nervous, but Serena totally made me feel at ease from the very beginning. On the very important day, I think a bride cannot always make good judgement because she would want everything to be okay if not perfect. I was like that and I regret that I did not wiped off the parts I didn't like about her makeup on me. I received a quite different makeup from what I sent her for inspiration. I understand that photos can't say too much and that people can read differently. But the main reason I am giving a low review now is that she didn't listen to me enough. When She said she will put some gray and pink for eye shadow, I told her I prefer brown, not gray, and a peach to pink. She put gray and pink. (I thought it was just a base and will be corrected, but no). For eyeliner, I also said brown, and she said she will add some brown, but it ended up just being black. I said I want straight long end for eyeliner, and she couldn't change from short cat eye end which seems to me old fashioned. I corrected this with my own brown liner later. When she was done with my face, I could see dark circles and a blemish still too visible, I asked her for more coverage and she did, but it made my eye area too cakey. I told her that it now became too bright, but instead of taking out extra concealer, she added powders (shadow?) to tone it down. So the tone got better but My eyes were cakey all day with too much products layered. I told her that I don't want my face looking long, but she added bronzer and blusher in a way that it will look my face slimmer, which may help some people but it wasn't for me. She corrected this part but I felt that she doesn't "read" face that well. My fake eyelashes were not glued properly that it came off at the end even before my ceremony. My sister had to cover the detached part with more eyeliner in that area. I could definitely do a better job myself because the communication was this bad. Her portfolio looks good but I think you should know exactly what you want - not the look, but exactly how it can be done. When I asked her for corrections, she told me it does look better in the photos that way. I respected her professional opinion hoping I was wrong, but it looked worse in the photos. At the end of the day, I asked my mom and sister why they didn't tell me if my makeup is this strange, they said it didn't look this bad with eye so they actually thought it was fine, but that photos get all the awkward parts. For hair, I particularly said I don't like curls. I said I want some textures but no dramatic curls. She spent half of the time curling my hair. I wasn't sure what she was doing because I didn't have a big mirror in front of me and I assumed that this is probably the way how she give texture to my hair. In the end, I asked her to correct the side bangs from curls to waves, but that little remaining curly tips kept coming out of my face that my photographer had to correct them so often. The bun in my inspiration photo was slightly higher so younger looking, but my bun was too downward that I looked older. And my hair started falling apart by the time I left city hall. There were not so many pins, so I couldn't get it right during my photo shoot. After the long day, when I saw the pictures taken, I hated my makeup and hair in every photo. I had to calm down for many hours. So many people spent so much time and effort for this one day, and I just want to delete photos from everyone because I don't look the way I wanted. I can't believe that a makeup and hair can ruin all just like this. And I can't believe that I didn't decide to wipe it off. But when it is only two hours before the ceremony, making decision to wipe off and to start again seemed so risky. No one really told me I look weird because they can't say such thing to a bride at the last minute. It is partly my fault that I didn't correct things enough. But I think main cause still lies in bad communication, especially the fact that she did her own way even after I told her specific things like "brown, not gray" or "brown long straight eyeline" If there is a way to go back in time and fix, I would pay anything. But except the fact that she could not get it other way than what she had in her mind, she was a nice person and there's my fault not wiping out, so I give three stars. read more
