When I told her we were celebrating our anniversary, she was more than accommodating, suggesting a room with the features we were looking for - a nice-sized and comfortable bed, and a jacuzzi tub. It was perfect for what we wanted - a full day of relaxation. The Silver Spruce Inn is a historic structure, with the original building dating to like 1790. During a sumptuous breakfast the next morning, Phyllis joined use and talked about some of the history of the place, joined by a returning guest, who seemed to be rather familiar with the place. When everyone finished breakfast, Phyllis and Eldon gave us a short tour downstairs to see the bar that was acquired when the original Waldorf Astoria was being demolished to make room for the Empire State Building. History aside, the owners were pleasant and caring, the room was clean and comfortable (we slept well), the grounds were spacious and beautiful, especially the flower garden, which attracts butterflies, and even hummingbirds. The inn seems to be in a secluded location but is really quite close to the Town of Schroon and Schroon Lake. Like some other guests, we wish we could live there all the time.

I'd rate this motel around 3.5 stars--my stay was better than good but there's definitely room for…read moreimprovement. Positives: Contactless check-in: I booked online and received an email with my room number and door code the day before. We were able to arrive at our convenience and got into the room without any issues. Ambiance: We stayed in a 2-queen room, which was clean and modern. There were thoughtful touches throughout that made us feel welcome, like decaf coffee pods for the Keurig, a mini fridge with a freezer, a microwave with cup o' noodles and oatmeal packets, and a small entryway table. Beds: Very comfortable with plenty of bedding--sheets, a fleece blanket, and a comforter, making for a cozy winter stay. Parking: The parking right outside our room was incredibly convenient, especially with all our luggage for our brief visit as part of a much longer itinerary. We also appreciated that the lot was kept clear and well-plowed despite the snowfall. Location: Just a short distance from downtown Schroon Lake, with nearby restaurants and Lake Placid within an hour's drive. Opportunities for Improvement: Odor: There was a faint smell in the room--nothing overpowering, but noticeable. After a while, I stopped noticing it, though every time I returned, it would remind me it was there. Inconsistent water temperature: After a cold day outside, I was hoping for a hot shower but could only get lukewarm water. Later, the water from the bathroom faucet was scalding, which was frustrating. Bathroom: The bathroom could use some updating to match the rest of the room. The walls and tub were a bit yellowed, there was some dirt and dust in the corners, and there wasn't any counter space for toiletries. Overall, this is a solid place to stay if you're looking for somewhere comfortable and affordable to rest during a weekend of adventures.

I stayed there twice this year in the front and back motel rooms and everything worked fine and was tight. Though the grounds themselves are a bit dreary but the small pool was redone and welcome on a hot July day.

A couple of warnings: you are staying in a house that was built over a hundred years ago. All things considered, it's in great shape, but as of now, the exterior drastically needs a paint job. The Victorian nature of the house makes it look a little like the Psycho house. Don't give up, just go inside! However, once you are inside, you are in heaven. Karen is the nicest person you could imagine hosting a B&B. She was very excited to be sold out for a special event at the Star Trek tour. The place looks great inside (see my photos). We stayed in the Rose Room. The room was huge, with a very good bed. The bathroom is large as well. We loved everything about it, except for two small things. The jacuzzi tub does not have a shower. I did not notice this when reserving the room. Of course, a bath is fine. The only other complaint I have is that the wifi did not work in our room. It's a very big house, so I was not completely surprised. Our cell phones worked fine (Verizon). Wifi worked fine in the living room, which is also a very comfortable area. There is a flat-screen TV with Hulu in the living area (which happens to have the Star Trek episodes...). There are very large lawn areas outside the house, which would be perfect for events like wedding. I saved the best for last. The breakfasts are amazing. All home-made. In four days I put on three pounds! With my wife being vegan, we are used to getting no choice for breakfast, but she gave multiple vegan options every day we were there. KAren is really sweet and tries very hard to make everyone happy!

Her Victorian Home is amazing and the bedroom was totally spectacular. Then the breakfast. We had fresh fruit. Coffee and Juice. Bacon to die for and a pastry with cream cheese and roasted sliced peaches. It was divine. Way to go Karen. If I'm ever in your area again, I will definitely make a reservation to stay there.
