The owner of this bike shop is a disgusting piece of a human being--a vile excuse for a business owner. He is deceitful, unprofessional, and completely lacking in integrity. Over the phone, he quoted one price for assembling a bike, but when I arrived to pick up my bike, he suddenly demanded more--an obvious bait-and-switch tactic. He and his inexperienced teenage staff also attempted to withhold or swap out parts that rightfully belonged to me, simply because the bike wasn't purchased from his store. He even had the audacity to think I wouldn't notice the difference--trying to pass off cheap, generic parts in place of the originals. When I confronted him and said I would call the police for stealing my parts, he exploded in anger, yelling at me and calling me "cheap" and "crazy" in a hostile, unhinged manner. I paid this man for a service he and his employees failed to perform correctly, and instead of owning up to his dishonesty, he doubled down with disrespect and aggression. I recently went there because of a problem with one of my wheels. Using no tools and taking 10 seconds the owner fixed it. Chuck doesn't know what he's doing. Went in for tuneup on my trek bike ($325) and they messed up my gears even after they installed a new (inferior no name brand) gear shifter replacement for my Shimano. To top it off they charged me for their mess up! Unbelievable. Better to pay a little more and go to Brands next time! Live and learn! read more

TL;DR the guy on the phone was a dick and they didn't finish the job. I took my bike in on a Monday for a tuneup and to replace the chain and freewheel. The kid who took the bike in on the sidewalk told me they had the parts in stock and it would be ready Thursday. I told him the rear brake squeaks and he said they'd look at it. I call Thursday afternoon to see if the bike is ready. Simple question, right? The guy on the phone responds in the most bitter tone, "Well, did I CALL you?" Then he asks me if I bribed the kid. WTF? I didn't call to get my balls busted, I just asked if the bike was ready. Turns out they didn't have the freewheel in stock and no one could be bothered to call and tell me it would take longer than originally estimated. I took the bike back unfinished, paid for the chain and the tuneup, and got the work finished at another shop. The brake still squeaks. I don't get why but the guy on the phone takes such an adversarial attitude with his own customers. Can't just answer a simple question. read more

Thanks for getting me out of the doghouse! Last week, ignoring the sage advice of the all knowing Lisa E., I crammed both our bikes into the back of the SUV instead of taking my car with the rack. We had a great ride, but when we returned home, I had trouble getting them out. Seems they conjoined during the ride, I swear I didn't put them together like that!. Anyway, she went for a quick spin the next day and said there was a clicking noise. I checked it out and dropped the chain off the front sprocket in 1st gear. I frantically called a few local and well known shops and got the "a few days" to service and if you need parts, who knows. So this morning, we headed for Long Beach for a boardwalk ride ( in 2nd and 3rd gear only). On the way I remembered a quick fix on my bike at Local Cycles. They were open when we pulled up at 10:15, on the sidewalk already working on other bikes. I asked the owner if he could take a look and get me off the hook, he said " I got ya". Bike up on the repair stand and the assessment, I whacked the hell out of the front derailleur. 6 minutes later and $10 poorer, smooth shifting in all 21 gears! There's 1 2-star review and 1 1-star, but I'm thinking my 2 5's - gonna cancel that out. Am I right? read more

Actually they should be ashamed of their lack of customer service or willingness to help....next time I'm in need of anything bike related on my annual beach vacation in Long Beach I will drive to Brant's in Juan's or another bike shop up in Oceanside. We are avid bikers, we are not demanding people, and to be treated this way was disappointing and shocking. We bought a part for a child's bike seat and it came to us damaged, when we returned it they made it seem as if we damaged the part.. which we clearly did not, ( myself working in retail understand customer service even when not in the mood, cuz that's what you do and I know it's very easy to return damaged parts back to a company with very little effort). Cannot say enough good things about this bicycle shop. The staff, led by Chuck,is knowledgeable, professional and caring. Chuck asked all the right questions, pointing me to the ideal bike. He invited me to take a test drive, something that his completion never suggested. The bike was delivered on time and was as ordered. All warranties were explained. I was also encouraged to bring the bike in should adjustments become necessary. The day after I picked it up, I had a mishap ( my fault), which was addressed within 20 minutes, despite the shop being incredibly busy. Top notch service. I am totally satisfied with this store. When I was there this Owner/Manager? had hired six untrained kids to work on customer repairs outside. He assigned one of them to me. Whenever the kid probably 15 years old got into trouble I had to go inside the small shop to bring his ill mannered boss out to help. Each time he left me and this poor kid too soon so I had to retrieve him, the kid seemed afraid to bother this guy himself. After three go rounds of this nonsense I found the right wrench to make my travel safe if not permanently fixed. Whether Owner or Manager this guy was surly and rude and offered his personal services at $100/hour (labor only). He actually said this in front of a guy shopping for a bike for himself and his son! I said to the customer is this where you want to do business? Then left never to return. I got smart and will now check the reviews on YELP first. I was so happy with the service I received at this shop. I only went in for a bike lock. I had called earlier in the day to find out if they accept credit cards (which they do not, glad I asked). They close at 6 and I was on my way when I hit some traffic. I called up the shop and they said that they were already closing and it was about 5 minute til close but they were so accommodating and said they sell me the lock if I was gonna be there soon. I appreciated it so much and he said he gave me a discount (idk if he was just telling me that, but it was nice) LOL I would've up-charged me for being such an annoying customer. They were totally patient while I took a few bikes for more than one ride to ensure I was making the right choice. We made a few modifications (they have a great selection of accessories) to a gorgeous Felt bike that I can't take my eyes off. I brought my bike into Local Cycles for the first time for tune-up and after doing a quick initial check, Chuck told me it was a great bike in great shape-he suggested new gear cables which would run about 15 dollars. When I picked up the bike late afternoon on a Friday, Chuck again told me I had a great bike and that everything was running fine. I went for a long ride the next morning and found the seat all the way up (set for a very tall man), one of the brakes sticking, and the biggest problem, the bike stuck in the highest gear on one side. I had a friend- a long time rider- test- ride the bike. He confirmed the problems. I called in to let Chuck know I was struggling to ride and brought the bike back the next day. When I came in, Chuck said that he had completed the tune up and was surprised that I had problems. When I began to explain what was wrong he told me it wasn't necessary, he would put the bike on the lift and see for himself if anything was wrong. Here are his responses: 1) Nothing is wrong with the gear. It must be that I am not pressing on the gear hard enough. 2) After I showed him something was clearly wrong and that it wasn't working as before and as the other side works, he said would not be able to fix the problem because when he went to put in the new cable, he found the sprocket was old and messed up inside in the first place. This is the very first time he'd mentioned that although I spoke to him two or three times since my bike was tuned up. 3) I asked him why he hadn't called me to tell me the sprocket was "messed up and old "and that it would not work the same if he changed the cable so that I could decide what I wanted to do, he replied, "Stop it." 4) When I offered to leave him the bike to calmly work on it, he repeatedly told me he was only willing to spend another 10 minutes working on my bike and that it couldn't be fixed any better since it was old and messed up inside. 5) He also asked me if I expected my brakes to feel perfect and "the same" on both sides. I said to him that he should be apologizing instead of making me feel like I was expecting too much from a tune- up when my bike was working just fine when I brought it in (was not my first time getting a tune up on this bike and no problems at previous bike shops). Again he repeated angrily, "Stop it." 6) He spent about 30 seconds adjusting it and I did a test ride; the gear was not working at all. He told me the gear couldn't be fixed any better but he would adjust my brakes. I asked for compensation- what he felt to be fair. He agreed to pay me 15 dollars (the price of the cables). 7) He again told me he would only work on the bike for 10 minutes and if I wanted, I could invest another 200 dollars to get the bike the way I wanted it. 8) I left for an hour and when I returned, he said he found a "kink" and changed out the cable. I did another test ride. After reminding him of what he had said earlier, I was not compensated at all, since he said he switched out the cables for new ones. Gear is still not shifting smoothly as it was before the tune-up and I told him that. This is my only local bike shop with quite a few workers and it gets a lot of business. I assumed it must have been an apprentice who worked on the bike and that Chuck would have apologized for not checking and fine tuning the work before telling me my bike was ready. I never expected shoddy work and a lack of professionalism from the guy at the helm. read more

I had a GREAT experience buying my new bike over @ LOCAL CYCLES!!!.As i walked in i could tell that everyone was real busy BUT Chuck dropped what he was doing, walked over and greeted me like family and asked if he could help me. i told him i was in the market for a new bike and he asked what kind of riding i did.he was EXTREMELY knowledgeable and not only showed me his line of bikes that would fit me needs, he gave me carte blanch to ride any bike of my choice, and i did!!! he never high pressured me at all.... his prices are GREAT and so is the service.... im picking up my new bike this morning!!!!!!! Sorely disappointed with my first and last experience at this bike shop. After having the wrong rack installed by a different bike shop, I was really hoping for a "local" expertise and "local" customer service. I went there in search of a proper rear bike rack for my child seat and was questioned as to why I even want to use a rear child seat. I was told "if you could give me one good reason you want to use a rear bike seat, I'll help you" - I explained that my son is too young for the front ones and I don't like the idea of a wiggly toddler on the front of my bike, and potentially making it hard to steer. When I told him all I need is the appropriate rear rack, he asked if I "plan to zip tie" my child seat to it. I couldn't believe how rude this man was, but still I explained I actually have the proper adapter and my child seat is designed for a universal rack, he still was looking at me like I have 5 heads. He didn't even offer to show me the one he had so I could see if it's the right one. I even tried to inquire about buying a whole new bike entirely and he basically just shook his head and walked away from me without taking any genuine interest in my particular situation or really even seeming like he cared to help. This guy acted like he is such an expert and apparently thought it was ok to talk to me like I don't know what I'm talking about, but he isn't even aware that there are rear child seats such as the Hamax Caress on the market that come with the exact adapter I was referencing and are perfectly safe and reliable with the right rack. I left and went to Brands in Wantagh where I was met with incredibly friendly and professional people who had exactly what I needed (Topeak child seat rack FYI) and went above and beyond to help me. I also plan to upgrade our bikes eventually and I will be buying them from Brands. It's sad, but the saying is true, it is hard to find good help these days, and while I was really disappointed I couldn't find it at this "local" bike shop, I am very grateful that great customer service still exists somewhere, you will just have to go to Brands in Wantagh to get it. read more

Beware of superlative reviews. These guys are a click of local aging hipsters; almost a club, so there friends are treated one way and everyone else another. I've brought my bike her twice. Once they tried to rip me off telling me I needed new spokes on this old Schwinn, why? I don't need them; have the same spokes for the last 2 years. Other time, I was told both tube and tire needed to be replaced, went to the competition across town and they just replaced the tube. Saved about $25. read more
