Probably the cutest flower shop I've ever been in! The lights lit up at night, dried flowers hanging from the ceiling, garage doors as windows. Just beautiful at night. One if my co-workers found flower arranging classes here and suggested we sign up as one of my birthday gifts. We signed up for the Dahlia class and had the best time. Ellen, the owner gave a demonstration on how to flower arrange. She had a representative from one of the nurseries to explain the difference between the different dahlias, how to grow them. So informative. There was a photographer taking photos all night. Ellen made arranging seem so simple. I greatly enjoyed the experience and have already signed up for another class later in the month, fall wreaths. read more

My wife was graduating from Hopkins' nursing school today so I dropped her off and searched for florists around me. Local Color Flowers came up as the first result and so I drove over. As I drove by I almost skipped over the location due to the warehouse looking working space. I sat in my car wondering if I should call them first to make sure I could do a walk in flower purchase. I decided I didn't have enough time for indecision so I dropped in. I was greeted by three workers (one probably being the owner) and someone who seemed to be getting trained. I told them my predicament and that I needed three arrangements (one for the wife and two for her friends). She asked if I had any preferences. Due to the look on my face she graciously moved on to price, "20-25ish per arrangement?" "Yes, and my wife is wearing purple." And they were off. In ten minutes or less they had three beautiful arrangements. As I walked out with my surprise flowers I noticed a wonderful smell from the fresh flowers that was different from normal flowers. Receiving a Valentine's boquet from Local Color Flowers was a delight! The whimsical little arrangement was beautiful (I uploaded pictures), and knowing they came from local gardens made them special and worth the price (not sure what that was, though). I'm very particular when it comes to accepting gifts (aka I return most things and detest the typical red roses + baby's breath), but I'll definitely continue to support this business in the future. The boyf worked out all the details, but he said contacting them went smoothly. He lives in Lima, Peru so they used skype to arrange a delivery to my apartment in Baltimore. The blossoms came just before the Valentine's winter storm hit, so good planning by all! I followed LCF on instagram for a while before ordering from them. Mother's Day was coming up so I placed a preorder for a small arrangement for my grandmother to pick up on Mother's Day itself. The ordering was simple, I made a small request if they could to include some purple. Sent my husband to pick them up at a designated time and boy was I pleasantly surprised. It is clear they use local, seasonal blooms that are handpicked with care and attention to detail. It was a quaint springtime bouquet in a jar with a variety of colors and flower types, with even some herbs and other greenery mixed in. My grandmother loved it and said it's just the cutest thing. We are at over 10 days since pick-up and she informed me that the arrangement still looks great with just a few starting to droop. Those last two stars she had to work for, and I'm thrilled to note that she earned those stars through and through! She is reasonable, personable, flexible and creative. For my wedding, she understood budgetary constraints and was just happy to help promote local flowers even though it didn't mean a huge sale from me. She provided a list of flowers that are generally in season during the time of my event, so I got a chance to not only visualize what may (and may not) be possible, but I also got to learn about which flowers are locally in bloom! I loved this. I also loved all of the previous work she had pictured on her blog so much, I pretty much gave her free reign to create things as she saw fit. When I was thinking about flowers, I knew I wanted to minimize my environmental footprint and buy green and local. Lucky for me, Local Color Flowers, is a preferred florist of the venue I chose. They are local to Baltimore and source their flowers from family farms and gardens within an average of 50 miles of their workshop. This means none of the flowers are shipped in an airplane nor are they chemically preserved! Ellen Frost, the founder, is absolutely wonderful to work with. She loves what she does and loves working with her clients, and both are evident in every meeting you have with her. She is all smiles and is passionate about flowers and helping you formulate / articulate your vision. If you have something specific in mind, they have look-books by season and month so you can see what kind of flowers and foliage are available during the month of your wedding. These are also available on their Pinterest page. I had a very loose idea of what I wanted because I didn't have "wedding colors" and only had a matron of honor. What I did know is that I like wild foliage, interesting flowers, and unruly (non-uniform) arrangements - no fragile flowers please. Well, Ellen and her team knocked it out of the park! All of the flowers were stunning! We had 2 large ceremony arrangements, 2 bouquets, 2 wrist corsages, a number of centerpieces varying in size and extra bits for the wedding cake. I would have loved to give thousands of my dollars to Ellen at Local Color Flowers, but I never received my quote, so I'm guessing my business wasn't that important. After a great phone conversation where we discussed my vision for my big day, I was told I would receive a quote that following Monday. After a week or two and no quote, I followed up with an email, then another email after no response. Finally, I called Ellen (at this point I'm tracking her down to use her services) and on the phone she said she has been busy. No apology. I asked if she received my emails to where she acknowledged that she had. Again, no apology. She said she could get me a quote "no earlier then next monday" to which I agreed. After reading the other reviews, I almost feel like this is becoming a cult! Ellen is a total superstar. I live and work in Boston doing high-end catering management (like $30k minimum to walk in the door, for the food and drink only). I spend A LOT of time making sure people's weddings are flawless and executed exactly as they want them and better... but I can also see how cookie cutter they can be and how "on trend" the flowers can be (oh, look, hot pink hydrangeas, how 2010) and how eye-wateringly expensive they are. Ellen is some kind of Flower Whisperer. I had a small order and minimal requests- just that they be colorful. I sent her pictures of everyone's dresses and voila! gorgeous flowers! On time and picture perfect (though we were not on time, or even at the hotel). Plus, keep a secret here ladies, my best friend had been acting like a total witch (so much so, I had another friend step in to be my MOH) and when my friend finally pulled it together on the morning of the wedding, I called Ellen and asked for another bouquet. With 3 hours notice. Done, done and done. The fresh flower industry is tough on agricultural workers, the planet (fuel to move them around the world, pesticide use etc) and can lend itself to everyone using the same thing. I found out about Ellen while visiting a salon in Federal Hill that was filled with vases of gorgeous fresh flowers. After looking at her photos on her website, I knew I had to meet with her for my wedding. I knew immediately that Ellen "got" me; that after a brief description of our vision for our wedding, that she was the one for us. Ellen transformed an Italian restaurant in Little Italy into a gorgeous wedding venue. The staff at the restaurant told us afterward that they've never seen their restaurant look so good. She made a flower "curtain" of white hydrangeas that hung against the brick wall where our ceremony took place. Every balcony railing was covered in garlands, railings hung with pomander balls, and beautiful floral arrangements on every table. Ellen was responsive, on time and didn't miss a single detail.
