    "Fruity" Americano
    Elisa B.

I've had a few not so great (& expensive) experiences at coffee houses lately so I entered this café with hesitation. I ordered an iced cold brew for myself and my husband got a 20 ounce hot Americano. The barista asked if he would like fruity or chocolate notes in the Americano he selected fruity. (I would've selected chocolate personally) While the cold brew was tasty, that Americano knocked it out of the park for me. It was over the top unique and distinct. Sadly my husband did not enjoy it, but I absolutely loved it. We talked to the barista, Mia about the coffee beans and the flavors. Mia offered to make him a different Americano, but he declined. She geeked out on coffee beans with me & explained how the beans were fermented with strawberries (!!!!) I can totally understand why people would not like this process, but I found it to be remarkable. I really wanted to order the chocolate version just to try it out but after spending $14 on two drinks, I decided against it. Overall, a great experience with wonderful service especially from Mia. Will definitely be back next time I'm in San Antonio.

If you looking for a fun vibe with yummy lattes, coffees and cappuccinos then this is a great place to try!!

This little coffee shop is a cute little gem with the friendliest staff, delicious hot and cold drinks! They sell cute little coffee cups and bags! 10/10 highly recommended

Local Coffee Founders has a cool vibe and a great location in downtown San Antonio. The space is open, modern, and perfect if you want to work, people-watch, or meet up with friends. Coffee-wise, it was solid but not mind-blowing. I had a latte that was decent, but not super memorable. They do have a nice selection of pastries and light bites, though a few items were sold out when I visited. Service was friendly, but a bit slow, even though it wasn't very busy. Overall, it's a good place to stop for a casual coffee break, especially if you're nearby. Not my top favorite, but worth checking out if you're in the area. It is right by the river walk.

Stopped in local coffee this morning to grab a drink before our walk along the river walk. The peppermint latte I had was the perfect amount of sweet + coffee & was served extremely quickly. The staff was very efficient given the long line and were so sweet to chat with!

This was my second time at Local which in itself does say something as there are several coffee shops here is SA that I've been to only once intentionally. What I ordered: Iced matcha latte with oat milk (3.5/5 stars) A somewhat decent amount of seating with tables large enough to study/work at which is why I've found myself coming back. Overall would recommend :)

Small place but yet it feels like every inch of this space is used effectively and yet you don't feel crowded. I got the Salted Carmel, maybe I should have gotten it extra hot since we were walking around during one of the coldest days in years. The Pearl Historic District is nice and this coffee shop is a great first-stop!

This is a cute coffee shop in the Pearl. However, I am thoroughly disappointed with the matcha. The barista told me that they use "ceremonial-grade" matcha then proceeded to hand me a drink that tasted like milk perhaps the coffee is better

Coffee was great and this spot had amazing ambiance. It was bustling with people and the staff was kind and helpful.

Stopped by here while we were walking at the pearl farmers market! We wanted to get the turmeric ginger chai but it was already sold out for the day. So we got matcha latte with almond milk and chai tea with almond milk. Chai was good but match was too plain and felt like they put match in warm almond milk... a bit of sweetness could be helpful but it was just too plain for $4. But I like the local coffee shop like this tho! It's nice to have it like that in the community. Cheers

Such a cute spot in a really nice area, I was able to set up and hang out for a few hours. Overall I enjoyed this little coffee shop as well as the menu. I ordered a Mexican vanilla Matcha with oat milk and it was absolutely delicious. Staff was friendly in the seating auctions were great. I spent sometime at the bar, but eventually got one of the smaller tables. They had some fun merch and I enjoyed walking around the area afterwards.

I honestly dont know why this place don't have a better rating. I love you going here. Great coffee. I got the latte and a matcha. Great service but was a little crowded. I will definitely visit again.

Loved the vibe of this coffee joint. The hanging plants and wrap around seating bar were cool. Menu was simple, uncomplicated, and not frou frou. Their baked goods were all displayed in a glass case built into the counter. I ordered the decaf vanilla oat latte. Uncovered the lid and a beautiful frothy heart appeared which put a big smile on my face : ) It was definitely going to be a good day. The hint of vanilla was nice , but despite the decaf, the coffee was strong. I had a little trouble sleeping that night lol

I'm a black coffee kind of guy. I'm frickin beast, I know. I split my black coffee consumption into 3 major groups: normal black coffee, americanos, and cold brews. Sometimes I want my black coffees and americanos hot, sometimes iced. Depends on the weather. Cold brew always iced, obviously. When we came to Local Coffee Founders under the scorching San Antonio sun, I asked for an iced coffee which was $3.25. She rang me up for $4.50. I looked at the menu hanging above her and said "it says it's $3.25 for a coffee..." I thought an iced coffee was just a hot coffee, poured on ice. That's it. That's all I wanted. It's what I do at home. Not rocket science. She seemed baffled and responded "you said you wanted a cold brew?" I said "I asked for an iced coffee..." She looked at me crazy and said "that's the same thing..." I just kind of stared off in the distance, trying to process this. She filled the silence with "...if you want a normal coffee it comes hot" She also seemed genuinely confused, so I was trying to be nice and said "If I just wanted that hot coffee, on ice..." "We don't do that." Uhmmmmmm, ok? I was going to order a hot coffee with a cup of ice on the side just for the plot, but the tension was mounting and I got really shy so I just said "a cold brew is fine." The cold brew was admittedly GAS, but I was still ready to go scorched earth on this review. Then a funny thing happened: This morning at a coffee shop in NY, the same situation occurred. The barista again was looking at me like I had 3 heads. The evidence was mounting, it must be a me problem. I took to google and typed in "What is an iced coffee reddit" and have become more confused than ever. It's not as straightforward as I thought. I'm deep on r/barista right now, and there seems to be a lot of contention over this issue. The baristas of reddit, the most accurate source for anything, are saying there is no clear answer for what is an "iced coffee." Some customers expect a "flashbrew" which is essentially what I was asking for, some expect a cold brew, some expect a black coffee with a little sweetener, and a few psychos expect a latte. I still feel like an iced coffee should be just a black coffee over ice, but what do I know? People are different, and I feel for baristas when customers expect them to read their mind. I will just have to ask for a coffee with a cup of ice on the side moving forward. Also, I know this doesn't tie in but there was a dude working out of here with 3 screens set up. A full battle station. Ridiculous. Bro better start paying rent and utilities at that point smh. I'm ending this review with more questions than I started with, but that's life sometimes. Can I no longer get a regular iced coffee? Is this not a thing people do anymore? Finding the right questions to ask is often more important than answers... IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews

They were nice enough to warm the cookie for me, and it had that "fresh out of the oven" smell and gooeyness. They asked me if I wanted my drinks for here or to-go and I said for here and they still served me in to-go cups, which I thought was weird. The cortado was not my favorite. It was bitter and acidic and the foam was looking a little yeasty. The mocha latte also had very little flavor to it, tasting like hot milk. I had difficulty finishing both drinks. Later I noticed they were using What's Brewing beans, and it made sense. I know many folks love WB? coffee beans, as it's a bit of a local darling, but more often than not I don't enjoy cortados made with their beans. Dirty dishes and cutlery sat on a couple of tables long after folks had left. I don't want to make assumptions, because there WAS a designated staff member for cleaning/wiping things down, but maybe those two evaded her. There's a sign on the wall that says, "I'm not for everyone," and boy are they right. They also stopped playing one of my favorite Radiohead songs (right in the middle of it!) to play Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. Now while I'm not deducting stars for THAT (because that's just downright petty), I can't help but feel unimpressed by my most recent visit. At least the cookie was delicious. Perhaps a third visit is in order. As they say, third time's a charm, right?

I haven't been to a CIA restaurant since I went to the one in Napa many years ago. We arrived around noon and were seated immediately as not many people were dining there except for a party of about 8 people in one table and 2 people in a bar top table in the other room by the pastries. A couple of people came in to buy pastries to go. Kiana was our student server and explained the concept. They're only open from February til April for that particular semester and in August for another semester with students operating both front and back of house in the kitchen. The proceeds from the restaurant sales goes towards the Students' Graduating Fund to help with the costs of schooling. The students can experience serving customers and cooking. The chef has a Basque background so his menu is French-Spanish inspired according to Kiana. My friend and I thought this was a great cause! We perused the menu but I zeroed into the Queen Vol Au Vent because it reminded me of the Chicken A La King in Pastry Shells dish I used to make when we used to have big family Christmas parties. I wanted to see their version. I asked Kiana what the pastry shells were filled with since the menu says it's filled with the "Chef's choice Velouté" and she said chicken and mushrooms in a cream sauce. Perfect! My friend got the Egg Croissant & Petit Salade with a side of Bacon & Home Fries. While they were preparing our dishes, I walked up to the pastry case to see what they had to offer. They had cookies, Raisin Bread rolls, Conchas, Manchego & Sausage Scone, Alfajor Dulce de Leche, a Passion Chocolate dessert, fruit tarts, Napoleon, Baguettes and some bagged items: Palmiers, Chocolate coated Nuts and Toffee. I asked one of the chefs how much the bag of Toffee cost and she said $3.80 so I said I'll buy a bag. My friend was curious to see what they had so she also picked up a bag of Toffee. My friend also ordered a cup of brewed coffee. Our dishes came and I noticed how huge my friend's Egg Croissant looked! It was nicely laminated and the egg filling looked nice and creamy. The bacon was thickly sliced and my friend said there was a slight sweetness, perhaps maple? She gave me a piece and it was pretty tasty, meaty and wasn't greasy, nor salty. My Queen Vol Au Vent wasn't quite as big as I thought it would be but the chicken filling was ample. The Petit Salade on the side were just dry greens and wasn't a very big portion either. It could've used more dressing as it was lacking moisture. Perhaps some sliced Heirloom Cherry tomatoes would've been nice to accompany the dry pastry shell Vol Au Vent dish and add a pop of color too. When we were paying our bill, Kiana said the bagged Toffees were on the House since they just opened so we were pleasantly surprised and thankful! Another server asked my friend if she'd like more coffee or if she'd like it in a to-go cup so she took that option. I noticed the students were clearing out the pastries and bread so I asked Kiana what they did with the excess, unsold pastries? She said they take inventory, donate or throw them away except for the bread which is frozen and sold the next day. We told her we hoped it was given away since they're perfectly fine and for a good cause. There was an instructor's birthday today so the students and staff sang "Happy Birthday" by the kitchen. That was nice. We paid our bills and before leaving I used the co-ed restroom which was very clean and spacious. We sat outside so they could buss our tables and we continued talking outside. Can't wait to come back again before the semester ends!

Although it is small, it's well-designed and well-laid out. The staff is really sweet and patient if it's your first time visiting. The breakfast croissant sandwich is the perfect amount of food, not to mention a well-balanced meal. The lamination is just proper- a buttery, flaky crunch. If you plan on getting goodies from the bakery, they can take your dine-in check and adjust the price to add those items. The variety can be a bit overwhelming but trust your gut. There's nothing terrible, since the quality of the ingredients and technique were on point. My favorite was the white chocolate pretzel cookie, so I'd like to return and try the other flavors. I love that a portion of your bill also funds the scholarship program, which makes you feel good about the entire experience.
