Blue Mermaid - Delicious hamburger but the fries will the show

"Then the fiddler crab plays his violin On the back of a…read moredancing whale While the mermaid sing to the shell they bring And the dragon leads with his sweeping tail" (Elvis Presley) After a morning of shopping in Kittery, we went hunting for a lunch spot and ended up making a stellar choice with the Blue Mermaid. Stumbling onto authentic Caribbean cuisine in coastal Maine wasn't exactly on my Bingo card, but it turned out to be a very welcome surprise. The restaurant is very spacious with a big bar, dark wood exposed ceiling beams, and blue and green accented décor. Their menu is multi-cultural with Asian, Mexican, Burgers and Jamaican influences. Our lunch choices were a cup of Lobster and roasted Corn Chowder ($13) for my wife and a Bowl of Ital Stew ($14) for me. I'm a fan of Jamaican food, and although I've often seen Ital Stew on Jamaican menus, I never tried it and really had no idea what it was. The Blue Mermaid's menu described it as "Lemongrass coconut broth, root vegetables, spinach, black beans, and chickpeas". So that was enough for me to order it. I enjoyed it a lot. The broth had a very distinctive flavor and was loaded with chunks of those vegetables. And I have to mention the very cute touch of fish shaped biscuits that came with our lunches - 1 for the cup of chowder and two for my bowl of stew. Our server, identified on our bill as "PM B" was friendly and very pleasant. The Blue Mermaid seems to be a bit of a social gathering venue, with live music on Bluegrass Sunday Brunch, and supporting charitable initiatives. And they got bonus points from me for hosting a Bob Dylan Appreciation Night on May 28.

I ordered salmon with rice and asked what the seasonal vegetable was, I was told broccoli then did a little dance cause I love broccoli. Once I arrived back at the Airbnb I realized I got a salad??? Not broccoli and rice entree I thought I ordered. I looked online and I'm not sure what dish I received. It was good, it had salmon. I didn't get dressing so I ate it dry. I think it may have the potential to be an amazing dish. Does it normally come with a dressing???

The food vendor is close to being the most important part of a wedding. He did not have enough apps for the guests and the pizza was coming out ONE at a time, the guests waited in lines, he was unprepared and only had one other staff member helping that was unpleasant to even try to talk to. He blamed the storm that passed by but we never lost power, he has excuses instead of taking accountability. Was an honest shit show with everyone waiting for the food. He should be ashamed and the least he could do is reimburse them.

One of which is blaming the event planner. She offered to serve appetizers...was attempting to help this business owner who was clearly not getting it done. He will not refund any money but rather will now offer them free Mac and cheese etc. Clearly does not understand. There is no do over for this special event. This is shameful and I am writing this as he owes our daughter and son in law money...not free food after the event. I do not want this happening to others. this needs to be known. Other vendors at the wedding pivoted and made adjustment. This vendor did not.

Every single time we go up to Portsmouth, we make it a point to go to Gilley's. I don't often think…read morethat a place has five star food but this place absolutely counts. The french fries alone are why I love the place. They taste like they chopped a potato right there and tossed it into the frier. I'm sick of places that use the gross coated fries, Gilley's thankfully does not do that! It's a small little diner that's been around forever with only a few parking spots (like three or four) in a busy area of Portsmouth. The hours are a little wacky but it's always worth it. The fried egg and cheese and the grilled cheese are made about as perfectly as one could hope. Very greasy spoon diner type of grub. Reading some of the one star reviews, they seem to come from disgruntled people who have a weird agenda who also don't tip and are proud to mention it in their review... and this is the only place they've reviewed? Ignore them and just know the food is good. Only downside - It is cramped inside the little space. There are only a few (six?) stools inside - which is fine if the place isn't busy. I'd more recommend getting the food to go.

I think it is good after a night out kind of food, if you get what I mean. Simple, quick, and greasy. Now, I will say - I went with a large group of people one night after going on the harbor cruise and there was only one guy working. That man was the order taker, cashier, and cook, and everything else in between; he did a great job as far as handling the orders and getting the food cooked and out the door quickly, so kudos to him. Menu consists of burgers, hot dogs, fries, and some miscellaneous other items - again, very simple. Our group got a mixture of cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and fries - some "cheesy", others regular. I got a cheeseburger and regular fries. It was mediocre. Like I said, probably good after a night out food but for me, I it wasn't great.
