A welcomed supermarket to the area. The store is nicely designed, far more warm, comfortable and upscale than any other supermarket. It's much nicer than your typical Loblaws (though I have been to the big one at Maple Leaf Centre). Everything is well laid out, easy to navigate and find things, unlike the confusing layout of Longos at Maple Leaf Square. I also like their recently launched black label gourmet food products (watch out Mark McEwan's). Truffle oil, bacon marmelaide... so good! The freshly made breads, salads, sushi, breads and pastries all look so good. This is a great place for cheese, patés and antipasto stuff -- everything you need to host or bring to a party. Yes, it may be more expensive (it's acutally in line with Sobey's and Longos). But the quality and selection is good and it's a one stop shop for all your grocery and entertaining needs. If there was a LCBO in the building, I would be moving into one of the condos upstairs! read more

This store is great! Not only do they have a wide selection of everything but their staff really goes above and beyond. I had trouble finding an item so asked one of their staff for help. She couldn't find it either so had 2 other staff members all helping. I told them it wasn't a big deal and not to worry but they came and found me about 5 minutes later with 3 different brands of what I was looking for. Amazing service! Another awesome Loblaws downtown location! The Queen/Portland location has done wonders to the area. Similar to its Maple Leaf garden location, this location offers a great take-out area, free parking (if you spend $20), fresh produce and yummy baked goods. It is a smaller footprint but you get all your grocery needs under one roof! Week night shopping is less crowded then the bustling weekend crowd. I highly recommend this location, make sure to check it out if you are in the Queen West area. read more

I found Loblaws by chance while on vacation for a few days in Toronto. The place reminded me of Whole Foods, with a very nice selection of food (they even have dried morel mushrooms to buy in bulk!) , amazing pastries and a small eat in area overlooking the street. This a big, bright new Loblaws smack dab in the middle of Queen Street West. It's strange to see this here, but I suppose much needed in this neighbourhood. Anyway, this place is so new & sparkly. It's a brand new super grocery store so it's all pretty and shiny! All of the fresh produce are carefully displayed like works of art. The dessert station is HUGE with lots of cupcakes, truffles and other goodies, everything to help make become a diabetic if I'm not too careful. This store gets a lot of natural light which is nice. You can casually sit and enjoy your "fast food" delicatessen treat by the large windows that overlooks Queen West. With that said, it's still expensive to shop here. Prices are higher than say, shopping at your local grocer. But in a pinch, this Loblaws may be a saving grace for some of my last minute shopping excursions. read more

All I could think when I tried to sum up this Loblaws was "no great shakes". I have no idea where that particular expression originated but the gist of it is not fantastic. I was really excited when I saw that they were building a Loblaws here. I've been waiting for it for months and months thinking about how nice it would be to have one on the west side near me. It hasn't transformed my life, however. It's a nice size and has some pretty and shiny features like a large bakery, fresh pizza, a wall of cheese and large, inviting cake display. All very classy looking. The more generic part-the bit I actually go for-is less impressive though. Fruit and veg are generally decent; although I've enountered wilted broccoli and softening peppers more than once. I ended up buying perfectly fresh ones in No Frills instead. Like every Loblaws, it's worth looking out for specials on the fruit etc. Some of the aisles are wide, but others have huge pillars in the middle and they've also placed display stands down the middle of some. It gives it quite a cramped feeling-particularly when you're ducking behind a pillar to let other people pass single file. Checkouts are sometimes tolerable, sometimes awful. Some of the express ones are 3 cashiers in a row facing the store with no indicator as to how to queue. It's very messy looking. When you actually get to a cashier, they may be civil but I've had a few who made it seem like I was solely responsible for all that is wrong with the world. I slinked out feeling sorry for my existence those days. Not what I really want when I'm paying for the Weston family to live a life of luxury. They've also overcharged me. So it's...fine. In the way a woman says "fine" and means that they're really somewhere between OK and annoyed at something. in my case, I'm annoyed that they got my hopes up and charge me a premium to be treated like I'm an inconvenience. read more

This is a great option for those of us in the area where No Frills is too far, Sobeys, Longos and Metro are closer bit too expensive. It's spacious and don't get me wrong, unless you shop for the sale items it can be very pricey. Case in point, when I buy a loaf of country harvest bread at No Frills it's a hefty price at $2.99 a loaf, here it's $3.29 *ouch* I would rate this higher but there are a few things missing. (1) There is no PC financial automated teller machine which really stinks. I mean when you go to every other loblaws it's there. I don't expect a full serve pavillion but give me a place to direct and withdrawal money please! (2) There is no bulletin area to get instore loblaw coupons. Booo (3) Flyer for this store isn't available online, when you click this location as your store on the loblaws website a flyer doesn't show up. That's funny because when I go to the store there's a flyer available. (4) Cashiers are definately not friendly, not that I expect much but how about a please or a thank you. You would think a brand new store like this would have the cashier's still in their first impression mode. Apparently not. (5) As other people have mentioned, the layout is still lacking. It doesn't have the same feel as other loblaws. I know my way around a Loblaws even if I've never been there but with this one after several visits it still feels 'wierd'. read more

I love this grocery store. I shop here twice a week and I find it so relaxing. The aisles are wide and the store isn't too busy. It isn't a huge Loblaws, but there is still a good selection and products rarely run out. There are lots of staff members, who are nice and friendly. I also never wait for more than a moment to pay (usually the amount of time it takes me to get my groceries on the conveyor belt). The prices are also surprisingly good. Writing an update because after several years (four) shopping here, I now actually try and avoid this location, for one reason only: the deli counter. Everything else is great, but that experience is painful in the extreme. Which is a shame, since it's pretty much the first encounter you have in the store. Every time I go it's a massive exercise in frustration and taints the whole experience. So first of all, there is no ticket system, so everyone just has to hover around the counter hoping they get picked next. Many, many times I've been waiting for like five minutes, then someone else wanders up and gets served before me. This stupidity would be SO easy to fix - just get a ticket system! Then there's the deli staff. They seem to have a pretty high turnover of staff, and they seem to put their youngest and least well trained people on this counter. They are usually teenagers and often they have no clue what they are doing. When you eventually manage to get their attention (the girl who was on the salad bar on Saturday afternoon literally just ignored me because she was chatting to her friend), if they can understand what you want, they move at a glacial pace. Because they are always obviously new to the job, they take forever to do anything. If you want both salad AND meat, you have to wait twice. I get why that is--they don't want people who handle meat also handling salad--but I can't help but think there has to be a less frustrating way - couldn't they just have different pairs of gloves? Then when you get to the cheese counter, someone really smart has decided to put a massive cheese board display thing right on top of the counter, so it's impossible to actually see the person you are trying to talk to on the other side. Seriously, who thought this was a good idea? Anyway, the whole process is inefficient, time-consuming, incredibly frustrating and basically the worst part of this store by far. If I do go to this Loblaws now I often just bypass the deli counter altogether, which is such a shame because I like the products and would love to buy them, and this should be the best part of the experience. The really infuriating thing is it wouldn't take much at all to fix it: just get some decent staff on there, give them good training so they know what they are doing, and install a ticket system. I have just sent this to customer service after, yet again, being blanked in the store: To whom it may, and should, concern, Please justify to me why I have just spent the last 45 minutes queuing up at the deli counter at your Queen Street 'store' - 585 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON M5V 2B7 416-703-3419 - for the daily meal deal only to be told that they have 'run out' and that there was no timescale for resupply. The person relaying this was lazy, feckless and had all the customer service skills of an aphid. Now, bearing in mind that I was at the front of a very very long lunchtime rush queue, I thought that the voicing of my disappointment and concern was more than necessary (again 45 unacceptable minutes we were all waiting) and would best be addressed to a senior staff member or, (if they actually exist, I have never seen one), a store manager. I was met with a blank expression and told that 'I dont know what or who that is buddy, its not my problem ok?' I am a rather calm guy and have given money to said store since its opening last year, do you really believe that the above is a good way to treat your customer base and lead to return purchasing? Because the last year would most certainly indicate that to be the case. If you are going to put on offers that create a large demand, then it might, just might, be a good idea to make sure there is a system for supplying that demand, not a couple of stoned space cadets working behind a counter and using a shrug of the shoulders at the first given sign of concern or complaint, it is completely unacceptable and I voiced this, with echoed applause, with the rest of the people in the queue and there was a communal agreement that our custom will be taken elsewhere due to these school boy errors you seem happy to display. And in a new store with a reputation to garner? Tsk tsk Loblaws, you need to go back to school indeed and get a refresher in how to appease your customers. An absolutely sickening show in how to turn away business on a mass scale has taken place today, will you do anything to correct it on any scale? I doubt it, not if the last year, topped by todays debacle is anything to go by. I seriously doubt that this page is even governed, let alone read by anyone who takes any form of action to correct, tsk tsk again Loblaws. You are an utter disgrace to the food retail space and I only hope there is an improvement immediately, if not sooner, to correct this ongoing disgrace. The location of this Loblaws is sooo convenient. Nice big aisles, always clean. They haven't reinvented grocery store layouts so the layout makes sense. I've had no issue with produce or meats. It is a little pricy but I'm a savvy flyer shopper. Self checkouts are a breeze. read more

Somehow rhis Lablaws always seems sold out on the stuff I need. Last weekend there was very little fresh produce available, and even fewer orfanic choices. There was no lemons, or tomatoes, or coconut milk. The prices here tend to be quite expensive as well, mych higher than sime specialty retailers around. read more

Meh. This new Loblaw's on Queen West is good in some ways and annoying in others. On the good side: I was really excited to find a brand-new, shiny Loblaw's in this location (on Queen near Bathurst). This neighbourhood had been sorely lacking in major grocery stores, so the location is a huge plus. I was also excited to see that this new store has some of the luxuriousness of the Maple Leaf Gardens Loblaws store: fancy sandwiches, salads, and sushi, huge patisserie, Ace bakery, and a nice (albeit small) seating area for eating. There's a wall of gourmet / imported cheeses that doesn't fail to impress, although I couldn't find my usual fancy-cheese favorite, Kerrygold Cashel Blue, and there was no one around to help me find it. On the bad side: At first I thought it was just a fluke, but now I realize that the service here is consistently T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E. It's not just that no one is around to help you find a certain cheese. The fancy patisserie counter, with all its delicious-looking cupcakes, cakes, and macarons, was completely unstaffed when I was there today. Several customers were waiting to order from this VERY large counter, but no one ever came to help. I probably waited 5-7 minutes, occasionally returning to see if anyone had shown up, but to no avail. As another reviewer pointed out, they often don't stock key PC items. Today I was looking for the PC organic honey. This store does not seem to even carry it. Also, despite the vast bread selection, I couldn't find the Loblaws sourdough sandwich loaf I like to buy at the other locations, and Ace Bakery didn't seem to have any sourdough (oddly enough). But when I eventually decided to buy a round loaf of something else, no one was around to help me figure out the intimidating bread slicer, so I gave up on the idea of buying bread altogether. Then there are the cashiers. They barely speak to you, and they will NOT help you with bagging if you've brought your own bags. In fact, they will rush you through--chewing their gum and examining their nails while you struggle to put away your change and your wallet and then to bag ALL your own groceries, and they'll huff and puff and roll their eyes dramatically when you're not out of the way in a split second for the next customer they're rushing through. Earlier this week, one cashier spilled my carton of raspberries all over the counter and then instructed ME to cross the store to get another one and to put the old one back (after she'd put all the spilled, now-filthy berries back in). But she couldn't actually WAIT for me to get the berries; instead, I was to simply put the old one back on the fruit stand (!!) and take a new one on my way out, frowning security guard notwithstanding. Yikes. She was a grunter. I'm not thrilled overall, then, but I'll return here occasionally if I'm in the neighbourhood. read more

I get annoyed by this location every time. I try to avoid shopping here as much as I can. Their produce section is often mislabeled, disheveled and out of stock. There's no bulk section. Instead it's all pre-packaged predetermined amounts. No organic canned beans and no Tamari sauce just to name a few items. When I ask the staff they just look confused. Every time I go in I've either not found what I was looking for because it's not an item they carry or it's out of stock. Let me preface this review by saying that I generally believe that Loblaw Company runs the best grocery chains in the country (on par with Wegman's in Western New York, who are consistently rated one of the best chains in the US). And I was one of the many who had waited with baited breath for this location to open. Now that it's had a couple of years to shake out their kinks, I have to say, I'm still very disappointed. So, it's my sad duty to write this review. Where to begin? - Staff. Other reviewers have picked up on this, but the professionalism of the staff is a big issue. Don't get me wrong, there are some members of the staff that are friendly and helpful, but they are few and far between. The turnover at this location seems to be really high. The cashiers are generally listless and sometimes outright incompetent (contrast this with how friendly almost every cashier is at the Carleton location). The folks at the fish counter are often uneducated about their products and how to handle them (just try to get them to steam a lobster for you). The stockboys are constantly chit-chatting about inappropriate things instead of getting stuff done in a professional way. The worst are the folks at the deli counter (especially the younger staff) - they are outright rude and give you nasty looks for simply requesting things be thinly sliced or are freed of plastic wrappings before slicing begins. The only folks that seem consistently professional are the ones at the butcher counter. To me, these problems point to some fundamental problems with management, hiring and training. - Product Selection. Considering that this is an urban location, I did expect that there would be some issues with selection, but I continue to be surprised at all the items that are not carried here. - I've seen Galen Weston a number of times at the flagship location at Carleton/Church, where things run much more smoothly. Perhaps he should be spending more of his touring time at the locations like this one with fundamental problems that need to be acknowledged, and addressed. read more

Dearest Westons, Bless your Hearts. After moving into the 'hood at the end of June last year, I quickly realized that one thing I would sorely miss was being close to grocery shopping. I had my Loblaws at Christie and Dupont (now 24h! Geez, just after I leave...), my little Bloor Superfresh for all produce, Cobbs for my breads, and Metro just in case. There was even the Bloor Street Market I could dash to after the gym, if I needed my Loblaws products but didn't have time to make the trek to actually get groceries. After moving, though I had the butchers, cheesemakers, and veggie stands of Kensington, along with Leslieville Cheese and Healthy Butcher on Queen, it was still one heckofa walk to get to anything resembling a grocery store, especially if it was after 7pm. Enter Loblaws on Queen W, also known as heaven. I waited patiently, knowing it would come, for the 5ish months from move-in to opening. I visited on the day it opened...twice. There was cake :) Having now been open for approximately a month and a half, I've made this place My Grocery Store. I frequently pop in after work, sometimes en route to work, and for not-so-late-night snacks after yoga, as well as do big shops every few weeks or so. Ah-Mazing. THE PROs: - Hours. This Motha' is open from 7am-11pm. Every. Freaking. Day. I can go to work, go to the gym, and get something to eat or prepare for the next day on the way home, without feeling like I'm holding the staff up. - Cleanliness and Decor. Every time I have been in, including 9pm+, this place is spotless. I have snacked at the take-out counter and noticed it was almost completely void of crumbs. The decor is also quite nice; appropriate for the area (yea, fake graffiti!) and very similar to the Maple Leaf Gardens store, just on a smaller scale. - Prices. I was worried that this Loblaws would go the way that the "(Insert name of street here) Market"s have gone, and exhibit inflated prices for their products, both fresh and pantry staples. Not the case; the prices are similar to what Loblaws in my folk's town are, *and* are reasonably close to prices when compared with those at the No Frills I frequent are (that's right, and I have the product comparison list to prove it). As mentioned earlier, they also have very frequent, and pretty excellent sales! I think I nearly bought out their stock of Perrier over the holidays when it was discounted to 4 bottles for $5. - Products. You want handmade sushi? You got it. You want inexpensive fresh pizza? Got that, too. You want a whole ton of delicious baked goods, both decadent snackies and dinner buns or bagels? Got that, in spades. You want the usual PC brand stuff? Well...they usually have it, or something like it (see below). THE CONs: - Staffing, especially at checkouts. I think they're still trying to sort this one out; I went in after a night shift around 8am on a Saturday (the Saturday before Christmas, if I remember correctly), and there were 4-5 times more staff than customers in the store. On the flip side, I have been there around 8 or 9pm, and there are only 2 or 3 people working checkout and rather large line ups, including the "1-16 Express" lanes (pardon me, but 16 items is NOT express. Especially when I'm behind 3 of you buying 15 things with nothing more than a bottle of pop and danish in my hand). While it has only been a month, I hope that they figure out their own Peak Times for the demographic in the neighbourhood soon. Or maybe install the self check-outs. - PC Product stocking. This can be tricky; granted, I may be going shopping at "off times", but there is usually at least 1 item I'm specifically in the market for which isn't in stock. Last night, it was PC frozen summer fruit and PC light feta. Other times, it's been PC block cheeses. Always PC items, though perhaps that's mostly because I tend to purchase either my PC things or produce, with little exception; one can't miss what they're not looking for. It's never consistent, always like I've just missed it. Life goes on, but it's slightly annoying, for sure. Overall, VERY happy to have this little addition to the neighbourhood. And so are my neighbours - I recently noticed it was used as a selling point in one of the other owner's MLS listings in my complex! read more

Now, I've never felt compelled to write a review for a pharmacy, but I've also never consistently walked away from a pharmacy counter and thought "wow, they are so nice". Not only are all of the staff there extremely friendly and helpful, I've also noticed their efforts to go "above and beyond" to provide excellent customer service. To Loblaws Employees on 585 Queen St. West: I am giving it 2 stars because of their staff. I have not been happy with their staff more than once. I have gone there a few times and sometimes people have bad days. But every single time their staff was rude, obnoxious, like they are some sort of Gods. Seriously??? You work at a store where customer service should be excellent. There are a ton grocery stores (cheaper) and local stores there, and if your staff keeps being rude, people will stop coming. Let me give you an example. I parked underground. Got the ticket. Shopped. Produce was not very fresh. Fish seemed good. To get the person who works at meats & fish department took forever. And the attitude I got. I mean - kids work there. And kids give attitudes. Fine. I got my fish and walked away. Got to the front. Had over 100 dollars worth of groceries. Paid. Got my parking ticket validated. Got downstairs. Ticket wasn't working. I went upstairs to let them know and they are like you need to pay for it. So I show them the receipt and they are telling me I was never there. I go to management. I speak to them. She wants to give me money for the parking ticket. I was like I don't want the money, just validate my card so I can get out of there. Then I got attitude. I simply asked why is it so hard to validate the card? Or to be nicer? So I called the security. They unlocked the gate to get out. I WILL NEVER GO BACK. Rude. Unfriendly. Obnoxious. If you don't like your job, quit. Find something else. Or change the way you think about your job. I don't know what else to tell you. read more

I find it overpriced, which is no surprise considering the neighbourhood, but the produce is usually really nice and their pre-made salads are better than metro's, and cheaper. When they took away the paper copies of the flyers without posting them on the wall or anything, I was really annoyed. I was informed I could "walk up and down the aisles looking for sales, or look online before I come to the store". OR I could stand in line at customer service and ask to see the ONE copy that they have. Seriously? You can't just post it on the wall somewhere for everyone to see??? Cashiers will offer it while you're checking out, but it's not like you're going to get out of line and keep shopping once you reach the checkout. AND the flyer doesn't even work online. The aisle signage really needs to be fixed. Half of the aisle contents are on one side of the side, and half on the other, so you have to go all the way to the aisle and look at the other side just to see what's in that aisle, I'm shocked that they haven't figured out this is a huge pain for their customers, particularly in such a large store, and they're the only major store that does it this way. I'm also unimpressed with the 5 cent bag fee not going towards any charities. Other stores are doing it, get with the game. At least pretend you care about the environment. read more

This area needed a grocery store. When it was announced that Loblaw's was opening here I was pleased that it wasn't a Sobey's and looked forward to doing some of my shopping there when Kensington wasn't accesible. I have had enough. How does Loblaw's not sell Basil in bunches? only $2.40 for 40 grams. How come half the time there is no bread when I get there at 7PM. Once I had to sift through bacon on sale to find some that wasn't expired... thought freshness was at the top of the list. This Loblaw's should learn from the many others in the city in terms of keeping things in stock and fresh. The only reason in doesn't get one star is because once you are sick of it, you can check out Winner's above. read more

I only come here because it's the closest grocery store to where I live, and will stop by when I need one or two things. It's VERY expensive; located in a great area of downtown, which is probably why. I recommend the Metro on College for better pricing and the same quality! read more

A great store with an incredible amount of young hot women walking around. This is like being somewhere around the Bowery or lower Broadway in Manhattan, great energy to this store and good one to shop, for a Loblaws. They do try hard with the newer stores. This one is actually decent. Loblaws is brilliant at re-packaging the generic as the exotic, and sprinkling a little whiff of the rare or unusual in the mix to sell the illusion. read more

I think they found the rudest people in Toronto and hired them to work at this store - very unfriendly, it always feels like they're doing you a favour to serve you and they don't know how to be appreciative of their customers. As more options come into the neighbourhood I know I will be shopping there a whole lot less.
