My wife and I ate last night at Little Truc in Easthampton, MA. Having grown up in New York City in a family that liked to eat out I can easily say I have not had a more unique and enjoyable meal. Not because of glitz, the restaurant is in an old mill building and the interior and furniture rough, but because the staff was welcoming, caring and clearly well trained and the food was wonderful. The appetizer we had was simply slice tomatoes with dressing. The tomatoes were fresh and flavorful as if just picked and ripened and the oil based dressing was light and full flavored while still letting the tomatoes fresh taste come through. My entree was a unique blend of shrimp, ground and minced pork, cellophane noodles and vegetables in a well spiced sauce that was surprisingly amazing. A simple dinner for two with an appetizer split between us and two entrees and a mixed drink and two non-alcoholic beers came to $96 without tip and was worth every penny. The mood in the place is very California--hip, friendly, and very food-focused, probably because everyone who comes in the door, knows that they're going to experience something really unusual for this area. Each dish was literally perfect and unexpected and fabulous taste-wise. We had a whole fried bass, and a squid dish that was impossibly delicious and a rice bowl that was simple in terms of ingredients but with a deceptively complex rice. The milk bread was magnificent. And they just have a great list of cocktails. The workers were all friendly and efficient and sort of down to earth, we loved everything--it's only been two days and I'm looking at the menu again for takeout. A meal at Little Truc is an experience in southeast fusion Asian cuisine. Six of us made a reservation on a recent Saturday night and the fun began in trying to find the restaurant. It is inconspicuously located in an open warehouse space with high ceilings and soft lighting. When we arrived, the hostess showed us to our table and introduced us to our waitress. Both were very friendly and helpful. I started off with a Thai beer (Chang lager) to cool off and loosen up. Our group shared a number of smaller plates consisting of milk bread, cabbage salad, eggplant stir fry, jasmine rice with crab meat, and Thai curry. Then we ordered some larger plates that were too good to pass up based on the menu descriptions. Everything looked good, smelled delightful, and tasted great. Textures and spices were exotic and varied, pulling you in to want more. We chose the Gai Tod Hat Yai (crispy Thai-style fried chicken) and Gaeng Massaman Neua (braised short rib) and the six of us devoured them both. We felt compelled to cap off the meal with a generously prepared rice Ice cream sundae and burnt mango cheesecake. We happily ate and never looked back. Overall, our Little Truc dining experience was enjoyable and satisfying from a multi sensory standpoint. I recommend trying it out to create your own memorable adventure. read more
