What a fantastic little bakery. I couldn't stop thinking about the bagel sandwich I ate from here and why I didn't get 20 more to go. We stopped here on our way on a road trip. Thought to give it a shot and the pictures on yelp looked so delicious. The bakery smelled delicious when walking in and we ordered the veggie bagel sandwich, while we were there we decided why not get a fresh baked bread for later. We decided on the rosemary olive oil bread. The nice employee at the front also let me have a coffee on the house which was super nice. Now let me tell you about this bagel sandwich, probably one of the best breakfast bagels I've ever had. The everything bagel it was served on was incredible and the eggs and veggies were sooo flavorful. The rosemary olive oil bread was awesome too, we ate it within 3 days. This is the type of small town, artisan bakery you want to find in the mountains. Maybe you had too many the night before and need to be revived back into reality with a breakfast sandwich? Is it just me? The locally owned bakery is Adorable with a capital A. Don't expect to find any seating inside, which is why they have an ample outdoor patio with 4-tops and picnic tables. I was on dog duty, so my fiancée did the ordering. However when I walked in to grab extra napkins, I wanted to breath in the intoxicating smell of freshly baked bread for as long as humanly possible. Bagel sandwich, sign me up. We perused the online menu before we checked out of our hotel. Pro tip* you can in fact order ahead online, and their website/ordering system is extremely user friendly. I consider myself a bagel sandwich expert (self proclaimed obviously) and I chose their sausage option. Sausage Breakfast Sandwich // everything bagel with local egg frittata, cheddar, roasted organic onions, peppers, tomato, spinach, local green chilis, and local breakfast sausage. You know you're in Colorado when your breakfast has green chiles in it and these added a nice warm heat to the sandwich. The bagel itself was great, definitely a unique style. Maybe it's the type of flour they use? The gourmet rendition of the sausage egg and cheese pleased my taste buds. From my understanding, everything is reasonably priced. Especially for all the TLC that goes into baking these fresh breads and pastries. Must stop for a bagel and coffee when in Salida. Go support this woman-owned biz! read more

I got a plain latte here and was incredibly happy that it needed nothing more. The espresso was amazing and was a great latte. We also got bagel sandwiches and they were also amazing. The area is small but you can eat outside and also see where they make bread. They were very busy but got out our order quickly. Everything looked amazing, just a little pricey! read more

I called here, SPOKE TO THE STAFF, and found out that there were NO gluten or lactose free options. They said NO, and then hung up quickly. Rude! Get with the times! Especially for a 2024 bakery! I suggest to go to a bakery that isn't rude and has a lot of gluten free options. It's so easy to make gluten free baked goods! Just make them unique and better tasting! After a cold and rainy night in the high country we found fresh pastry and coffees at the Little Red Hen in Salida. Their attention to quality and service is unusual these days. We popped in for some fresh coffee, everything bagel sandwiches made with local sausages and I grabbed a tart cherry hand pie for an afternoon snack. Although there was a line, quick and friendly service ensured that I was fed and happy in no time. Just spectacular baked goods and service. The sweets like muffins, pies and scones are great, but the savory crusty bread and bagels are even better. They run out of bagels sometimes but you can order the day before to save the day on the home front (and gain the ire of others in line- too bad for them). There is a nice area to eat your good stuff right there, but it's an easy walk to most of Salida. We stopped by that place twice while staying in town. They have a window outside, it is grab and go place right now. All baked goods are very fresh and very delicious! We picked up cherry hand pies, blackberry scones and coffe. Two days in a row we got they stack of oatmeal pecan chocolate chip cookies. They opened a trailer/food extension that is total crap.I had what they called a Monte Cristo and it was NOTHING like the menu described. It had turkey but instead of ham, there was fatty, very tough and dried out beef. Have you ever had a Monte Cristo with ancient pot roast slices? Also, no raspberry jam like the menu said, instead a sliced plum floating in sugar syrup. Oh, and it was $18.00! Served in a box with a slip of paper that ripped to pieces as I tried to cut through the sandwich. Plastic silverware.. I needed a chainsaw! It was absolutely horrible. This little bakery, at the corner of G and 3rd Street in Salida CO, is amazing. Locally owned and operated by Emily Walker and her staff. We especially love the wood fired oven and Ciabatta bread that emerges on Fridays. It sells out fast, so calling ahead to reserve is a must. This Thanksgiving we ordered a pumpkin pie and it was amazing. Beautiful and delicious. Without a doubt, the best I have ever had. We were also lucky enough to snag a couple of pumpkin cranberry muffins... oh my. If you are visiting Salida (the locals already know) you should put this little bakery on your must visit list. This was such a great find! We were looking for something good but also quick for breakfast and came upon this spot. The staff was unbelievably friendly and provided us some samples that sold us immediately. I ended up getting the cinnamon roll which was not sweet but, at the same time, great tasting with a great balance of ingredients and wonderful texture. I did try the raspberry muffins and, not being a muffin guy, I nearly bit if it weren't for the cinnamon rolls. Same story - not too sweet and just delightful. I did also get the Sumatra coffee, which might quite possibly be the best coffee I've had in years. There are really good coffees and then there is this where you can actually taste the bean and the flavor afterwards just lingers in your mouth. As for the place itself - a cozy little spot with plenty of seats outside if you so choose. No question we will make it back here again! read more

One of the best bakeries I've been to anywhere. I'm a particular fan of the everything bagels, but truly it's all fantastic. Hand pies are amazing; muffins, sourdough, I love all of it. One of the coolest things is they have a wood fired oven right out front where they make many of the baked goods. I dare you to try and walk past when they are out there making something fresh. My husband and I stopped in for breakfast last week, and were really impressed with the customer service, the food, and the coffee. They were cooking everything bagels in a wood fired oven outside that morning! Everything looked amazing in the pastry case, AND they were offering free samples of muffins and bread. We loved everything we tried (blueberry muffin, peach scone, FRITTATA SAMMIES!!). Even better, the coffee was terrific. They had ample picnic tables outside, which was wonderful. We stopped in for a treat on the way out of town. We tried the cherry hand pie and the pecan bar. They were both delicious and not overly sweet, but the cherry pie was definitely our favorite. We got coffee and hot chocolate. It would be nice to have more hot drink options, but you can definitely see that the focus is on the bakery side of things. Little Red Hen is like bread heaven on Earth. Formerly housed in Ploughboy (RIP), they now have their own storefront just down the road. I love going in just for sniffs, and for the samples of the daily bread. My favorite of their breads is the Rosemary Olive Oil, which makes amazing croutons or panzanella salad. I also recently got their French load and it was divine as toast. If you're in the area, be sure you stop in here! read more

My family loves this place. My grandmother lives just a few blocks away and when I visit her I always try and stop in at least once or twice. The morning I drive out to go home I stop in and usually get a fresh pastry for breakfast and a loaf of their sourdough to take home. I love their sourdough bread it hits all the perfect senses with its taste, smell, texture, and chew. This last time I picked up a pecan pie bar and some of their chocolate almond biscotti. The biscotti were huge and crumbly and had the perfect bite. Not so hard that you break your teeth but not soft. The pecan pie bar super chewy and had a great pecan flavor. We got here mid morning and most of their goodies were sold out. We got a brownie, chocolate chip cookie, and a jam bar. The cookie was the best, but the jam bar lacked the necessary jam to make it super yummy. The brownie was a little tasteless. The cookie takes like campfire smoke.
