The ice cream here is amazing. Dick, the owner, takes pride in his product and the ingredients he puts into each flavor and you can taste the difference. Don't let the interior dissuade you, his focus is on what matters, a superior product at a very reasonable cost. We walked in this afternoon as we walked through town and Dick was behind the counter. I didn't want ice cream at the time, but as someone who loves ice cream, I wanted to check out the different offerings in town to decide where to go after dinner. We were perusing the flavors and the man behind the counter (who I later learned was Dick, the owner) offered us a sample and told us all about his ice cream and why it is a superior product. Once I tasted it, I knew he was right and decided I didn't need to try anywhere else, I knew where to go post-dinner. We had dinner and came back to Here's the Scoop and Dick was still there. We got to chatting with him and he is a fascinating guy. He has lived in Salida for 57 years. He used to be a science teacher and so he took his time trying out recipes and determining which ingredients are necessary (milk, cream and sugar) and which are not (preservatives and all the other junk you get in commercial pints). And man, did he get it right. Between the two of us we each tried two flavors and it was impossible to decide which we liked best. While we stood there talking to him for half an hour or so, we also tried his vanilla which was the best vanilla I have ever had. We have to go back tomorrow to have more of his fabulous ice cream. Meh. Meh = service Meh = taste I'm not sure if we showed up at a particularly busy time, it was a warm Sunday afternoon and we had no idea of open hours because there was nothing here on yelp and nothing we could find, so we tried our luck and they were open at 4pm. There was a line, a few families ahead of us and one ordered the mint ice cream - I know this for three reasons, 1 because I saw her get it, 2 because I saw the remnants of it on the grumpy server lady's glove and 3 because I later tasted it in my chocolate chip ice cream. While mrs grumpy face was scooping my husbands ice cream I also saw the unmistakable green color drip into the vanilla ice cream located behind his coffee flavor. Now, I'm not one for changing my gloves unless I need to, but it wasn't that busy that she couldn't take 30 seconds to do that, I would have waited. As for our ice creams, I got chocolate chip (with a slight minty taste at no extra charge) and caramel. They were nice, and nice to have homemade, which was one of my initial attractions, but nothing special, especially at over $5 for two scoops. My husband got espresso gelato and coffee ice cream. He said that you could absolutely tell it was gelato by the texture and funnily enough, they are charged at two different prices! It took the lady at the register a while to understand what we purchased but she got there in the end. I think part of the issue was that mrs grumpy scooped so much into my husbands cone that it looked like 3 scoops...and I did feel that she may have made up the difference with mine. read more

I wish I could give this place more than 3 stars because the owners are super cute and their store is clearly beloved in town. But the ice cream was only Ok. I only tried one flavor, butter pecan, and it was OK. Really creamy but just not enough pecans. Not enough oomph. Not enough love. Simply put, just not quite good enough. There are a bunch of ice cream shops in salida so I'm wondering why this one is rated so highly. Maybe I just didn't get one of their best flavors. I'm tempted to try it again. After a great dinner at a nearby restaurant, the whole family was more than full. Naturally someone asked f there was any ice cream nearby, and the trusty Yelp app led us here. Being in a smaller town I more than expected a shop filled with commercially produced ice cream, but instead, we found a shop filled with customers and some wonderful owners behind the counter scooping, dipping, and doling out homemade ice cream and gelato! Yup. That's right. All the flavors are made right on premises nightly for the next day! And they've got everything you can think of in the case! I chose English Toffee, which tasted just like those chewy, caramelly, tootsie roll type candies you get with your check at some restaurants, and a little like a Werther's Original too! Super unique flavor, pretty good consistency and a really generous portion. Add in the awesome customer service and friendly conversation, and this place was a real winner. The best way I can explain this HOMEMADE ice cream is just like I told the owner - it tasted as authentic as when I got ice cream as a kid at the Minnesota State Fair dairy barn ice cream stand... as authentic as it is going to get. I am disappointed in this place! I looked at the reviews and I was close so I thought I'd give it a try. I asked if they had chocolate malts and the lady said I'll have to make it. She was a bit grumpy to say the least. I got an ice cream come and while she was scooping the ice cream she broke the cone, so she stopped scooping. I maybe got 1/2 serving. We came to Salida for the weekend and went here twice! Surprisingly smooth and rich ice cream, the way really good handmade ice cream should be. We split 2 scoops the first day and had a sundae the next day. She even put hot fudge and nuts in between the two scoops and on top. A deal for $5! Next time we'll have to try the gelato. read more

The other reviews seem to be spot on. This is a typical tourist trap environment but the ice cream is fabulous. My husband enjoyed three different flavors while I oped for the caramel swirl with chocolate bits in a chocolate-dipped waffle cone. It was a creamy & decadent treat, and prices were reasonable, well in line with what we normally pay at the fresh-made ice cream shop in our hometown.
