It's funny how nostalgia works. My family grew up 5 minutes away from Cathy's Rum Cake on Tatum and Greenway for so many years. Summer birthdays were always highlighted by these cakes. I found Lisa's on IG very randomly and thought I'd get it for my mom on her birthday. It brought smiles, laughs, and tears. We talked about that shopping center and how there was a Safeway, First Interstate Bank, and a Heavenly Ham (great sandwiches). But always Cathy's Rum cakes. Used a groupon to order a birthday cake. Ordering was easy online, as was inputting the groupon code. The cake was ready on the day and time requested, and the cake itself looked beautiful. We had a strawberry banana rum cake and it was delicious. The cake was very moist and you could taste the rum flavor (non-alcoholic), and the filling was oh so good. Because the original price is so high ($30 for a 6") I am a bit hesitant to order from them again. My max for a small cake is normally at the 20-25 dollar mark. read more

I recently saw that Lisa's Rum Cake was open...I was a customer at Cathy's Rum Cake back in the day and was so sad that it closed many years ago but was so excited to learn about Lisa's shop! Almost every year I order a Strawberry Rum Cake for my husband's birthday. It's his favorite! Unfortunately for him, I will most likely not be ordering from here again. After mistakenly missing my pick up time I received a call from (I'm assuming) Lisa herself. She sounded like the not so customer friendly lady who I dealt with before a couple years ago. She was pretty mad that I confused my pick up day/time. I had a crazy busy day with v-day treats to deliver and a sick kiddo. She mentioned there is no room for my cake and that I need to hurry and pick up. I told her I'm 45 minutes away which she replied, "Ya, I'm not waiting for you. She then basically ordered me to be there exactly at 8am to pick up. My guess is she's overworked, tired, and probably doesn't mind losing a customer here and there ‍ Business must be good enough for them. Yes, they make very good cake. We have tried several flavors, and all of them are moist and tasty. The cake itself is consistently good, and I think their fillings are outstanding. Sadly, I am a whipped cream HATER, and their only frosting choice is whipped cream. I scrape all of the frosting off and enjoy the delicious cake underneath. If you love whipped cream frosting, you will be in heaven, however I wish so much they would offer a buttercream alternative. read more

Last time we went to pick up (our favorite) the French Vanilla Strawberry Rum Cake, one of the owner's came out with some amazing samples they had just baked! My family picked up a strawberry/banana rum cake for my birthday celebration and the cake left us all feeling like there was much to be desired. My family was told the cake was ready to eat since we were serving it only 1 hour from pick up time. As I was cutting into my birthday cake I could feel frozen chunks in the cake where the knife wouldn't go through. Each serving of cake had frozen pieces of fruit, and very stiff custard. We have enjoyed many of Cathy's Rum Cakes in the past 3 decades while in the valley, but as some others reviewers have suggested this is not the same cake! While my family had a pleasant experience with Lisa, (who accommodated our order even when closed)we won't be returning for this cake. read more

This is one of the worst cakes I have ever had. I was a fan of Cathy's Rum Cake for years; so my husband ordered one from Lisa for my birthday. We live in Scottsdale and he drove 45 minutes each way to pick up the cake. It was served to 8 people, each of whom would not eat it. Most of them had a positive, nostalgic memory of the original. These cakes do not even resemble one of Cathy's cakes. The most disappointing aspect of our terrible experience was the way my complaint was handled by Lisa. She was incredulous that someone was complaining about her cake and told me that she had never in all her years with her mother until now received a complaint. Really? I find that hard to believe. Perhaps I am the only customer ever in their history to have received a dry, tasteless cake filled with a foul-smelling mousse and decorated in a 'quaint' retro style with the crowning glory of a wrinkled dime-store ribbon and inscribed with gelatinous, toxic goop that should never be consumed by humans. I actually scraped this red poison off the cake, threw out the ribbon, and tidied the whole thing up before it was served. I would never recommend this "bakery" to anyone. Most grocery stores can offer an edible cake at a fraction of the price. There are fine bakeries all over the valley as well. We will continue to use them. If you are looking for nostalgia or a good cake, this is not the place for you. There is also no redeeming customer service. read more

Today we celebrated my grandson's first birthday. He lives in Washington and I live in Arizona. As soon as I found out we were having a big party I told the kids that I would be bringing the cakes! See, I knew the perfect place to go and to Lisa I went. My son wanted a zombie theme for the party and I wasn't sure if they would be willing to make them but Madi and Megan were just as excited as I was to make them. I thought I could have them shipped but the cost would have been more than I paid for the cakes. They explained that I could take them with me on the plane! They have this super fast way of freezing the cake which holds in all the flavor and goodness you can expect with one of these cakes! I was petrified to carry them on the plane! My friend Rocke took us to the airport and the look on his face was classic when I told him I was bringing cakes, until I asked him if he remembered Lisa. His eyes glazed over when he realized it was a Lisa's Rum cake and he didn't say another word. Well except to tell me his favorite flavor! Then at the airport security wanted to confiscate them for their own use. Well the first TSA agent just wanted the rum ..... :). The 10" rounds that I bought, fit perfectly under the seats and travelled extremely well! As you all well know, the cakes were a hit!!! The kids couldn't get enough of the zombie theme and when the adults got their first bite, I watched their eyes roll into the backs of their head in pure joy and ecstasy! The person he spoke with said to order online after he was just told to call today for an order the next day. I came in and they were closing up. The store seemed to be designed for more of their cake orders. I got 5 cuts and every single one of them had the same whipped frosting on top. When I got them I was ready to dig in and the gentlemen informed me they were all frozen and to wait about 3 hours for them to thaw out completely. I use to order Cathy's Rum Cakes all the time and loved them. I moved back to the area and found Lisa's Rum Cake. It was the worst cake I have had. It had no flavor, no filling, and way too much frosting/cream on it. Not one person at Christmas dinner ate more than two bites. The $50 cake went into the trash. This cake was nothing like Cathy's Rum Cake. Cathy's cake was porous and had a think layer of filling. Will not be going back! read more

I am sorely disappointed in this company. My husband placed an order a week ago through the website. He said at the time of ordering that he was going to pick it up around 3pm on Saturday. We get a call at 10:45 today (Saturday) saying that they close on Saturdays at 11. So he rushed out to get the cake, and I called the store. First of all, the lady who answered was very snooty and I tried to tell her that he would only be a couple minutes after 11 and she would not budge saying, "if he's not here by the time we close the doors -blah blah blah-." I have ordered cakes from here before and absolutely loved them! Today we had a cake pie that I ordered for my daughters birthday and it was a total disappointment! I gave it 2 stars because it tasted great and the customer service this place has is wonderful ...I can't imagine that the quality I was given today would hold up the normal standards...I'm hoping this was a fluke...When I went to cut the first piece, it was just a runny mess...I took a picture after cutting 3 pieces...It looks terrible and I couldn't see the layers at all! It completely caved into the middle...I also felt the pies are something a novice baker could make...I've made better looking things and I wanted something special for my daughter...The layers are super thin- the whole pie is only about an inch thick- the pictures on their website are deceiving - mine didn't look anything like it and because it all ran together, you couldn't even tell there were layers- not the same quality as the cakes...Order the cake but skip the pies read more

BEWARE.....I ordered a cake online with 24 hours notice and paid for it online as well. When we picked it up the next day, we were told that we were charged an additional $10 "rush fee" and that she "left a message" about it. We never got a message. At that point, we were there to pick up the cake so we were not going to cancel. But we were never given the opportunity to cancel....they just assumed we would be okay with an additional $10 charge. My point is that if their online ordering didnt alert me to a rush fee being added, and they didnt speak to me to get permission for the $10 fee, then they should have waived the fee as a courtesy... especially because this was the 2nd graduation cake that we ordered in 2 weeks! My Wife introduced me to Cathy's Rum Cake about 18 years ago. It was the first time I had ever heard of it. I LOVED the incredible creation! Every year since I ordered her a Rum Cake from Cathy. This year, around March I was left with the option to buy a Rum cake from Lisa. I figured....it's a family business so the recipe would be similiar if not exact. Now, they may be, but something is definately missing and that is, well......EVERYTHING! The cake I ordered was so bad! We literally each took two bites. The first was awfull. The second was to make sure the first bite was not a Fluke. It most def. was not a fluke. The filling was sour/bitter. Not spoiled though. The cake was gummy and dense. The frosting tasted like cool whip. Nothing close to what I first tasted 18 years ago and enjoyed almost every year since. Very, very unfortunately, Lisa's Rum Cakes is nothing like Cathy's... despite the family relation. I had a very disappointing experience with Lisa's on my last birthday and I will never purchase a cake from them again. All throughout my childhood I loved Cathy's Rum Cakes and stumbled across Lisa's on the internet while trying to find the # for Cathy's. Very long story short-- rude on the phone; openly talked poorly of their mother in front of my friend who went to pick up the cake, which is just tacky; cake was awful. The cake layers all separated from each other in the box and it tasted as if it had been freezer stored for months. A Cathy's cake has never lasted more than a couple days in my house... this one was thrown out. While Lisa has jumped on the internet bandwagon and made ordering more convenient (you can even have them shipped now), the quality of the cakes is NOT what her mother's was... nor is the service. Found out her mom's (Cathy's) shop is still open and I told everyone and their dog about it! read more
