My partner had been to both Murray's Deli and Hymie's Deli in Ardmore. We wanted to have lunch…read moreafter an appointment, so I took a quick look on Yelp, and decided to go to Hymie's. It was packed - only a few tables were available at 12:30 on a Friday afternoon. We were immediately seated and looked over the menu. We decided to share a 1/2 Pastrami sandwich ( you can order 1/2 a sandwich ), 1/2 a Corned Beef sandwich, an order of Potato Latkes and we each had a small bowl of Chicken Matzo Ball soup. The soup was delicious - it was a little bowl with tiny shreds of carrots and chicken. The broth tasted very good, however, the matzo ball was a 'little' different. They were light and fluffy - but there was no texture or flavor at all....none. I would have thought the matzo balls would have absorbed some of the flavor from the soup, but it didn't. I finished the soup, but left the matzo ball. My partner likes pastrami over corned beef - she says it's a more 'peppery' flavor. While I probably prefer corned beef over pastrami because it's a leaner cut, my 'baseline' for pastrami is Katz's (NYC). I'm sure Katz's has great corned beef, but I've only had pastrami there - it's the best I've had. I thought my Corned Beef sandwich was excellent - it was lean, tender and very tasty. I squeeze out a little mound of mustard on my plate and dip. My partner thought her Pastrami sandwich was very good - it was also quite lean. I took a few bites of the pastrami, I thought my corned beef was tastier and had more texture. It almost seemed like they sliced the pastrami too thin. She liked her pastrami more than my corned beef - I suppose it's all a matter of individual taste. The Potato Latkes were delicious - especially with the applesauce! They were a little thicker than I might have preferred, possibly from either potato starch or matzo meal. However, there was a very nice potato taste and the thicker texture was fine. Of course, on the way out I saw a large selection of pasties and had to try a few! I got a few of the Rugelach and a Poppy Hamantash. The Rugelach were a disappointment - the interiors of all were very thick and doughy. I ate some of the exterior layers.....and left the rest. The Poppy Hamantash, on the other hand was one of the best I've had. It was by far the largest one I've ever had! As a result, there wasn't enough Mohn (poppy filling) for such a large pastry! The filling was very good as was the cookie (it was like 1/2 scone and 1/2 cookie)! Overall, Hymie's exceeded my expectations and I'll look forward to returning.

I stopped in for lunch and ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich. Wow! The chicken was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with flavor. Not sure the cheesesteak is the *best* I've ever had but still very yummy! DO NOT SLEEP ON THE HOAGIES! They are INSANE! The Old School Italian is freaking MASSIVE with good quality meats and man do I love their chunky pickles! That's gotta be my favorite thing I've gotten from there, and I've gotten it several times. Need to try more things off their menu lol. Their GrubHub ordering has been screwed up from the start, I actually messaged them about it and they attempted to fix it but it's still a mess. Ordering directly from their website is easy but they charge a $6(!) delivery fee which seems excessive. Def happy to have this spot in Manayunk!

Ordering online is nice to build loyalty points and easy to customize orders. But the online fees - credit card & website charge, even when it's directly from their website, are high. I altered my salad to fit my dietary needs and substituted strawberries and sliced almonds for the bacon and candied pecans. Absolute best salad I've ever had in my entire life! Even the two servers were like "I'm gonna order that for lunch." The fried goat cheese balls were perfect! I wish a couple more were included in the salad but it included five. The grilled cheese had a mix of variety cheeses, including farmers and a couple more that I cannot name. There was also a bit of arugula in the sandwich, which was a very nice refreshing crunch. The bread soaked up the soup nicely upon dunking, and the bite was perfect. The vegan tomato bisque was hard to believe was vegan! My lovely server brought out a sample of it before anything else, and it was absolutely delicious! I was not able to finish everything in one sitting but left this place feeling very satisfied and happy. Highly recommend if you're in the area. The ambiance inside was lovely, with natural sunlight coming in through the windows in the upstairs dining area, and the tables had little tomatoes engraved in the corner. Loved all the tomato decor in the place, very adorable. Parking outside was ok. I think I got lucky a couple blocks away because I came for lunch. I can imagine parking being challenging around dinner time for sure.

My Cajun Shrimp Salad had mixed greens, tomato, avocado, roasted corn, pickled jalapeno. The tasty orange chili vinaigrette was perfect. A really tasty combo. Five shrimp, not huge but two bites if you cut them. Plentiful toppings, it was just what I needed. Husband ordered a Couch Club, with the avocado on the side (more for me). He didn't order a separate side dish, so it was just a panini on a plate, unadorned. Tasty enough but probably should have had one of their many soups as well to round out the meal. Next time! I bookmarked this place intending to come back, but in a week in Manayunk we barely scratched the surface of all the culinary delights and didn't repeat. I love the way their menu clearly delineates gluten free items and those for which there is no gluten-free option. I wait for a few minutes and finally see an employee come in the back door, and she comes out front.
