There was a sign in the front telling us to seat ourselves. We found a nice sized booth and the most charming server came to greet us and get us started with drinks. We had a tough time deciding on food because the menu had so many choices! Big breakfast platters. Omelets. Pancake varieties. Fish. Grits. Waffles. If you can think of what you would love for brunch and this restaurant has it. We ordered a little of everything and the entrees were delicious. Also, our server was so sweet and helpful. I did take off one star because the restaurant interior needs updating. But, it's clear from the amount of people who come here for good service and a good meal that the experience is worth so much more than fancy decor.

She brought my drink, and a juice glass of ice. When I asked for a larger glass, the reply was, "We don't have none." I asked for a bowl of cabbage soup. When she brought it, I realized that it was chicken noodle soup. She was nowhere to be seen, so I ate it. I mentioned that it was good chicken noodle soup, although I'd asked for cabbage soup. Her reply was, "Well, at least it was good." The rest of my order was served, the plates slammed onto the table. The food was delicious as always, butI had to ask the young man who was clearing tables for cheese and pepper seeds. He brought the pepper seeds, and my server suddenly materialized and slammed the container of cheese on the table. When I paid my bill, there was no tip. Like I said, I'm contemplating not returning again. I didn't order a serving of attitude.

T ordered a country omelet that was filled with breakfast meats, cheddar and peppers. Though not my thing, I agreed it was pretty good. His grits were creamy, buttery and delicious. Coffee is strong and served in the old-fashioned heavy mugs that I favor. Our server was friendly. ("Where are you from?" she asked, picking up on my Brooklyn accent.) Functional, movable tables and chairs make up the other space with lots of natural light coming from the many windows. Old stools ran the length of the original half-oval counter with the short order grill inside a quarter oval. We could see the kitchen behind the swinging doors but mostly we paid attention to the man at the grill. It is not a big one; manned by a grill guy handling some large orders and doing it like he'd worked it for ever. Of course, it is Jim Evans, the OWNER! It is certainly not the menu that drew this crowd today because there is nothing that stands out on their standard breakfast menu save, perhaps, the chipped beef pretzel described as famous and homemade. Probably is but we eschewed it for their popular Two Egg Eyeopener. Our choice was right on. Lovely twin eggs over medium, classic home fries & onions and good ole corn beef hash with bottomless coffee while rye toast sopped up leftover bits. YEAH!
