    Takeaway haul.

I've been wanting to try this place for a while now. I periodically stop here for gas on the way home from work (alternate route when 35 is a mess) and whenever I go in to pre-pay, the sight of the piles of fried chicken and the SMELL of the place kill me every time. I figured one day I had to give it a go. I took home a 10-piece family meal (dark meat) with two large sides (mashed potatoes and white gravy and corn on the cob, 3 pieces) and 5 rolls, and a 2-piece fish dinner with two regular sides (okra and green beans) and a roll. The negatives: the green beans were just buttered canned green beans. I only ate a few before pushing them aside. Not worth it. The okra was the worst, though - tasted okay and was surprisingly un-greasy, but the texture was horrible, rubbery, even after crisping in my oven for a few minutes. I think they gave me the tail end of an old afternoon batch. Not happy about that. The positives: the mashed potatoes, white gravy, and corn were some buttery, salty goodness. Fish had nice flavor in the batter, but the meat itself was skimpy and thin. Chicken was great and the only reason I would really come back. It is seasoned, battered, and cooked near perfectly. Service was really friendly. Food was quick. And you can't beat the price: dinner plus lunch leftovers for two people for $19. A convenient stop when I am craving the fried stuff.

Loved it. We'd been…read moreto the Memphis, TN location about 10 years ago and enjoyed it. Now that we live in the DFW area, it was time to try the Fort Worth location. They are located on a corner and parking is limited. I found street parking on the side street, about a block down in front of a house. We walked inside Gus's about 11:30 am on a Wednesday. They were busy' but had a number of open tables. There are mostly square and rectangular 4-top tables. We chose one by the front windows. A moment after we sat down, our server, Joe K came by to greet us and he took our drink order. Menu's are at the table, so we studied a bit and were ready for Joe when he brought our drinks. I ordered: - Unsweetened Iced Tea - 3 Piece Dark Chicken Plate (my choice: leg, leg, thigh) with Greens and BBQ Beans My wife ordered: 2 Piece White Chicken Plate (breast, wing) with Mac-Cheese and BBQ Beans The chicken was the star for sure. The BBQ Beans weren't special but were decent. The Greens, decent. With each meal plate, the chicken is served on a slice of white bread. The chicken was fried to a deep brown and was real tasty. My dark meat was juicy and tender. My wife's white meat was drier but normal for white meat. My wife's felt the chicken skin was maybe overcooked as it was tough. It was fine to me. I ate her skin :) We'll be back to Gus's!

Everyone's different, not saying they were bad. Just different. And the Mac was not my favorite. Once I saw they pour the bag of Mac n cheese in a heater. Then I was like ahh. I just figured it would be home made like the pies and chicken. Our waiter was sweet and we even had dessert. Recommend the chocolate pie warmed with ice cream. Love. Definitely not too bad. Will come back again. And try different sides.

The General Manager was friendly and knowledgeable. The other staff were polite and helpful. It was a warm welcome to the establishment. I had multiple requests and they were all taken care of. Ambiance was good no complaints. Dining room was clean and comfortable. I like that they offer booths and tables for seating. The decor is simple with chicken art. The vibe is laid back and gives a little bit of country down to earth feel. Mimosas were definitely full of champagne! Chicken sandwich was moist and juicy. I like the slaw and pickles that come on it. I chose medium heat, but next time I want it a bit more spicy. I wanted sweet heat sauce on it. I think there was a slight misunderstanding with that. The sauce that comes on it doesn't have a kick. Quick fix they brought me a side of it. Once I poured that SWEET HEAT SAICE on my chicken sandwich it was magical. My mouth was happy and excited. This sauce definitely makes a difference. You will be singing to the chicken GODS lol. It made the chicken taste so good. The fries were hot, a bit salty for my liking. They give you a generous portion of fries though. The sweet potato fries seem to be the popular choice. Everyone had them on their table. I will have to try those. Overall a very good visit! I left satisfied and FULL! It's a popular place on weekend and they get a good crowd. You can order margaritas, beer or mimosas so that's a bonus. Thanks Cookshack for the hospitality.

I have to stay this beat any stadium food you could've gotten out the water, and the value emphasizes that! We got so much food for the price point, and it was all good! I personally got the chicken and pickle on a stick, and the dough babies which is a glazed donut / roll hybrid that is so delicious and warm, the glaze is very vanilla forward. Krispy Kreme has nothing on these. The chicken on a stick was good, however, the flavor was a bit too sweet for me, so I would get the powdered Nashville hot seasoning on it next time, but it was so delicious and came with some really good ranch that taste like it's made in house (which obviously makes it better!). My mom who I was dining with got the quarter pound chicken plate, and I much preferred the seasoning on this chicken, but it was all very yummy. It also came with a roll, two sauces, and tons of fresh cut fries, so if you're looking for some of those you don't have to wait for the fair just come to Mary Sue's! The young lady working the register was very sweet, when we ordered our beverages I wanted to get a watermelon, Arnold Palmer, and she was happy to oblige, and the drinks even had fresh fruit in the bottom super refreshing to pair with the meal. There's an array of different hot sauces. You can try to pair with your food, at a hot sauce, bar and some of them are HOT, so proceed with caution, but it's fun to be able to have a variety of choices. They weren't slammed when we came in, we were able to order easily, and there was a steady trickle of people dining within the place, yet the tables were regularly open, and being cleaned as able. They really play into the location, and had some music playing relevant to the concert we were going to which was a nice little pregame! As we were dining, the co-owner was even making rounds throughout the lobby and chatting with patrons, we talked to him for a bit, and there's so much passion behind the business that it's hard not to just feel joy being in his presence and having a meal. I'm wishing continued success to the establishment, and know this is the place I have in mind next time I'm in the area. Be sure to check the hours on Google, just to make sure you're able to go enjoy it when you're ready, because the ones on the door don't align. There's also ample parking so you don't need to worry about that, and the lot doubles as paid parking for events.
