Breakfast was solid. Not transcendent but solid eggs and toast and home fries and coffee and everybody seemed happy. Room for improvement 1. For Putney Vermont - get some decent vegan and vegetarian options. 2. The veggie burger was bean based, mushie old-school 70's style. Fell apart as soon as you picked it up. 3. The cheeseburger was good. It's just that for $18 you could show a little more attention to detail. A greenish slice of winter tomato. A single leaf of iceberg lettuce. 2 ringlets off an onion slice. And no pickle. 4. The fries that came with it had to be sent back to be cooked longer. And there was a big puddle of oil on the plate once I slid the par-cooked fries onto a side dish. The server was lovely about it and they came back fast and cooked through. But my guess is the oil wasn't hot enough hence the grease puddle. 5. The chicken orzo soup was meh. I don't try it. Brought it home for sick family member. And sorry but my personal pet peeve - the pre-calculated tip options were 20,22,25% and all calculated on top of the sales tax. Inside are booths and counter seating. The place was packed when we arrived, but the hostess found a booth for two quickly. The menu offers breakfast or lunch options. There is a daily menu with specials, as well. I selected a lobster croissant with fries off the special menu. Food came out fairly quickly. Our server was friendly and attentive. Water glasses were kept full. My lobster croissant sandwich was packed with big chunks of lobster claw meat. Other than a slice of lettuce, there were no seasoning, so the lobster was the star. The sandwich was excellent! The croissant was fresh and soft. The shoestring fries were crispy and hot. The lunch was excellent and at $18, a bargain. My cousin had a Monte Cristo which is a ham and cheese on French toast. The thin sliced ham was packed thick on the sandwich. She said her sandwich was delicious. There is a covered patio outside, but it wasn't opened during our visit. There is free parking on the side and in front of the diner. I was visiting family in Keene, NH (So pretty! Get up there straight away!!) and it's their tradition to grab breakfast from this spot which they refer to as "Lisa's" cuz a woman named Lisa owns it. Let me lay it out you guys: Lisa and her deli team are breakfast sandwich wizards. Tbh, I'm fairly certain that I didn't know what a breakfast sandwich even meant before last weekend. Let's get to the magic. The sandwich is built on an un-toasted english muffin that is the ur-muffin of muffins: good structure but pliant and hearty but thinnish. These muffins taste like real food. Made of actual grains, by actual hands. Are they made in-house? By benevolent breakfast elves? Perhaps. The sausage patty is house-made, my aunt informed me, simply seasoned, and crazy delicious. I kid you not that I could eat many such patties, on their own, if that weren't unseemly and basically a health risk. Because yeah a sausage diet is not one that is recommended all too often, right? I suppose I should have inquired what sort of sausage it was but I think all you need to know is that it's a magic patty. The egg component of the sandwich is made in one of those nifty round-shaped thingies, so it lines up perfectly with the patty and muffin. Because not only is this sandwich delicious, it's also gorgeous and tidy: no dangly bits to worry about or crumbs as you bliss out in between bites, reading an actual paper newspaper in the garden or driving to that sweet kayak spot or lying in bed wondering if you ever really need to get up. The waitress was very kind to split the pancakes orders and smoothie into 2 for our 2 kids, no split check charge. The chocolate chip pancakes were fluffy and delicious. Came with real VT maple syrup and a few slices of apples. The Classic Smoothie was very good, thick and not very sweet. The kids loved their food.
