After meeting with Adam and several other contractors, I decided to go with Patio Guy not only…read morebecause of his five-star rating, but several other factors that were important to me (and probably you as well): 1) He could deliver and install my new cover within a week vs. the other guys taking months; 2) I wasn't limited to just the AlumaWood product (which wasn't modern enough for me), and (3) his price to install with an upgraded cover (insulated) was far below his competitors constrained by higher overhead and slower delivery times. I ended up selecting a Duralum cover that his company also offers, and I'm glad I did. It's just the look I was going for. I was also impressed with Adam's business model, which is built on quality and efficiency at a very reasonable price without cutting corners or sacrificing customer service. Now for the best part: A guy named Brody, his lead installer. In addition to being a super nice guy, his work is meticulous. The back of my home isn't linear, so there are bump-outs and protrusions, making the installation more difficult and time consuming. This wasn't the slightest challenge for Brody and his team. The finished product is snuggled tightly against my stucco and professionally sealed on the roof to prevent any water dripping through when it rains. I watched him work, measuring and cutting the aluminum to match my home so the fit and finish is far greater than I imagined. As you can tell from the photos, I still have work to do (concrete coating, fence repairs, etc.) to match the beauty of my new cover.

Unfortunately we had an awful experience with Jaki and cannot recommend her work at all. There were…read morered flags from the beginning but we wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. Please don't make our mistake. Ultimately, Jaki did not understand our vision and kept pushing her design preferences on us. We had to fully create our own PowerPoint deck with reference photos to get our ideas across room by room; source our own tile (when she claimed the design we wanted didn't exist in the tile we wanted); ordered the wrong quantity of products; among many other issues. Additionally when we chose not to use her preferred contractor, she became even more difficult to work with. She claimed she didn't know how to use IKEA's closet building tool to help us build our master closet, was always running late to our meetings; nor did she know how to use Gmail to schedule said meetings. Due to COVID and vendor supply issues our renovation took much longer than anyone expected. But the most egregious and unprofessional behavior was when she quit the job BEFORE any of the fixtures she ordered were even installed. She literally took our money and ran. We were still in the middle of our renovation and had been project managing the majority of the work ourselves. To reiterate-- we paid Jaki in full for her services but she would not even honor returns or exchanges for products that we DID NOT install (because they didn't end up working in our space and were misrepresented in the renderings). In the end, we had to go directly to the vendor ourselves, who graciously honored the exchange given that we had such a terrible time trying to get that through Jaki. The whole experience has been extremely disappointing and we would not recommend her services.

The first installation was customized to my specific need and was the perfect solution to making a very sunny dining room one of my favorite places in the house. Less than two years later when I sold the home, the prospective buyers all commented on the beauty and practicality of the awning. He installed an awning for us 8 years ago in our Carlsbad house. We recently moved to La Jolla and desperately needed an awning on our 2nd story patio. We called him immediately and within weeks had an amazing, gorgeous Spettmann awning installed. Spettmann is the top of the line (German made) awning you can buy and John is the only awning designer in San Diego selling Spettmann and he does it at very competitive prices! Before approving the order, I asked for several basic details in writing, including the payment schedule, estimated production time, anticipated installation window, Pacific Shutters & Shades' workmanship warranty, and the Hunter Douglas manufacturer's warranty. I was told their payment terms required a 70% deposit, with the remaining balance due at installation. On a $10,000 proposal, that would have meant approximately $7,000 paid upfront. I asked whether they would consider reducing the deposit to 50%, with the remaining 50% due upon installation and completion, and whether they would waive the 3% credit card processing fee. I also specifically asked for Pacific Shutters & Shades' own workmanship/installation warranty because the information I had received only addressed the Hunter Douglas manufacturer's warranty. Rather than providing the requested workmanship warranty or continuing to discuss the payment terms, the company responded that they felt the project was not the right fit for their company and suggested that I use another provider. I was disappointed because I was prepared to move forward with the purchase. For a $10,000 custom window-covering project, I don't think it is unreasonable for a customer to want the payment terms, installation expectations, and workmanship warranty clearly documented before paying a substantial deposit. Based on my experience, I would recommend getting all warranty and payment terms in writing before placing an order.
