We initially had been told there was an hour wait for a table for two--not a huge surprise, as the parking lot was packed--but as I looked at my phone in the lobby I was told a two-top had just opened up at the bar. What luck! Our waitress, Angie, was new, but a very good server--fast, attentive, friendly... at one point she came by with who I believe was the manager to assure us that the pizza would be out soon, and it was so fast that I hadn't thought it was any wait at all. Even with that reassurance, the pizza came faster than I would have expected initially, especially with us ordering it well done. As for the pizza, it was amazing. Delicious and filling, plenty of the toppings we ordered, and it was indeed well done as we asked, without being too close to burnt. The free bread for the table was good as well, as was the side salad, and overall it was a quick, reasonable, and tasty meal. I also want to give a shout out to the restaurant's ambiance. Visiting Rockford for the first time for a sports tournament. Took a group of six to eat here on a Friday night. You could tell the restaurant was popular because of parking spaces were hard to come by. There was a steady stream of people coming in and out the carry-out door. At first they don't list it was going to be a little while before our table is ready... Then they asked if we minded being seated at the bar and of course we said no and were then seated immediately. We weren't actually at the bar, but were in the bar area. We had a table for six and it was perfectly fine. If you don't want to read this entire review, suffice it to say that our visit was very positive. We would definitely make it a point to come here again if we visit Rockford again. The food was very good, but it was as much for the service and the hospitality as it was the food. Our server was very pleasant, offered helpful, honest suggestions and opinions (which I almost always ask for but seldom get) and brought us samples of the various beers that were on tap that night (there were three). We inquired about the fish (cod), which someone outside the restaurant had suggested when I asked. We ultimately did not opt for the cod. However, during the meal our server brought out a small plate of the cod because we had been interested in tasting it. How cool is that? Everyone liked the food that they had. My wife had the chicken marsala and seemed to give the most so-so review of the food out of all of us at the table. She thought it was good but not great. I had lasagna and it was very good. I did add meat sauce because it is a no-meat recipe. The server mentioned that to me - otherwise I wouldn't have known. Two people ordered a pizza and it was apparently very good, but I didn't taste it myself. While we were eating, a young lady came over to ask how we were doing. It felt like she was in management, and when my friend commented on how good her egg plant Parmesan was, the young lady offered that it was her Nana's recipe and it her Nana would be very pleased that my friend enjoyed it. We had a brief but very pleasant conversation with her. Obviously her family owns the restaurant. She seemed genuine and was very friendly. A little while later someone else visited the table who appeared to be a chef. We had a pleasant conversation with him, and for all I know he may be part of the family as well. I have been here a few times, the food is great with affordable options along with the service and atmosphere. Today was what sealed the deal for this place. The place was busy, and the service was a little longer than normal, but it's busy and understandable, we had some drinks and appetizers, along with the house salad, which I think is awesome as it comes with the meal. But due to the wait, which we never complained about and the apps and salad were in the middle, the waitress and maybe her boss apologized for the wait and offered a free round of drinks. Never have I had a dinner where staff realized the wait for the entrees was a little longer than normal, nor did we say anything about the wait or complained (we aren't the type to do so anyways) they offered a free round of drinks or reimbursed a drink for the ones that were done, plus we were 30 minutes late to our reservations. Me: In about 5 minutes and 12 people. Lino's: Uh.....ok, we can get you in. My relay team and I decided that a pre-race fast food dinner at the O'Hare Oasis had bad idea written all over it and drove toward Madison, looking for a place to eat on the fly. As we neared Rockford, we knew that if we didn't eat ASAP, our dinner would be comprised of Clif Bars and Garrett's popcorn. When I found out about Amanda Z's review for Lino's, I felt we had found our destination in a sea of Chili's and Cracker Barrel's peppering the highway. They were prepping our table when we arrived; this allowed us to enjoy a live band coming from the bar area and spot the June lasagne special. For $7.25 you got half an order of lasagne, half an order of pasta (4-5 to choose from), house salad, bread *and* butter, and dessert. We were floored at how much they were offering for so little, even at normal prices ($11.25) this is a steal. The wine list was extremely reasonable too. We were seated in the main dining room, which is delightfully tacky and totally appropriate for an old school Italian restaurant. There's a large Leaning Tower of Pisa off to one side that you can dine inside of and the rest is modeled after a piazza. Most of us went with the lasagne special; I mean how could you beat all of that for $7.25. I ordered the special with penne as my pasta side and rainbow sherbet as my dessert. The lasagne was vegetarian (marinara over cheese lasagne) and was decent; I did find the marinara to err on the sweet side and otherwise to be bland. The bread was soft, not crusty, but still quite good. There was more than enough on my plate to stuff me full of carbs. Overall, the food was just ok; average at best. You're probably wondering why I'm giving a place with average food four stars; I'm bumping it up to 4 for a few reasons. First, they so easily accommodated us with essentially no notice. This is a great restaurant. They open at 4:30 every day; weekdays before 6, you can usually get a table pretty quickly, but I would recommend a reservation for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Inside, most meals come with salad or soup, a side (pasta, potatoes, veggies), and a scoop of ice cream. The small portions are the perfect size for me (I almost always take home left overs anyways, definitely true with the large). The special salad is delicious. The lettuce and tomatoes are fresh, lots of sausage and eggs, and homemade dressing (vinegar, oil, and a great mix of seasonings, all hand tossed into the lettuce). The only soup they offer is minestrone, but it is always hot and full of vegetables and noodles. The carry-out menu is a la carte, but they sometimes have amazing meal deals. Currently, they are running a 1 topping large pizza, 2 liter, and special salad for 2 for $11. They have tons of toppings and can usually get a pizza out for you in 12-15 minutes (up to 45 min when they get busy). You can see the kitchen from the carry out counter which is personally reassuring (if they were dirty and shady, they wouldn't let you see those shenanigans, right?). Tips: -They have early bird specials, a great deal, though I'm not certain when it ends (6?). -Can't decide what to get? Go with a large lasagna, with a meatball or sausage on the side. Deliciousness and two meals in one. -Sometimes the pizza is a little greasy, ask for easy cheese if thats a problem for you. -And, as always, be nice to your waitress. Today we celebrated my father's friend's 90th birthday at Lino's. We couldn't have been more pleased with the quality of food--all fresh and delicious--the atmosphere (including clean restrooms)--and above all, the wait staff (five more stars): it was a big crowd, yet I'm not sure I've ever seen better servers anywhere! Lino's management needs to take good care of her as she stood out as probably the best we have ever experienced. I'm glad they did, Lino's has a lot of character and was a much better choice than a chain. The girls all got Half and Half pastas. They all said they loved it. They got basic garden salads, I did try the special salad. It was okay. My egg tasted funny. My assistant coach got the Lino's Chicken Special. He said the flavor was good but the breast was dry. My tilapia was awesome. I opted for the mostaccoli side. The sauce was great. I know why the girls liked their pasta so much. The bread was good to dip in the sauce as well. The service was really slow. It was really slow. We weren't in a hurry, but if I had been, I'd have been crabby. We have come to Lino's for years. My Dad grew up in Rockford and this has been a family staple for years. The pizza is the best that Rockford has to offer. Crispy crust, sweet sauce and good toppings. The special salad is very good and can feed at lease five when you order the family version. The fresh bread is also very good. Some other items we have tried are the Italian beef and fries. The meat was seasoned but it's not like other Chicago area beefs. The fries were plentiful but needed salt. The veal Parmesan was breaded perfectly in their sweet sauce and was absolutely delicious. The side of pasta is also very good. I highly recommend this! read more

Lino's take out instruction: Park by the two black steel doors in the back of the buidling and someone would come out with my order once I had Notified them by phone. As you can tell, they didn't know I was coming because my call went right to voicemail. So, I walked up to those black steel doors and rang a bell . The person who eventually came to the door and opened it cautiously did not speak English so with sign language he kind of indicated he would find someone. That person allowed me to step inside out of the cold weather. He eventually said as he raced by a little while later that my order was upfront. So I waited and waited until someone else came up the stairs and asked if he could help me. By this time I was losing my patience and told him he was the third person I had encountered and I was getting frustrated that my order had not been ready for me. About 10 minutes later he showed up with my order and placed it in my car. I virtually had to jump through hoops with this staff in order to finally get my order after about 20 minutes of waiting so all of the advance directives went pretty much unheeded so I would recommend being very cautious about ordering takeout from Lino's. read more
