My son attended 30 plus hours of instruction at Lindamood-Bell Oak Park. I am not convinced that this is was effective tool for his needs. We spent over $16,000 for the personalized instruction. At that point, we were desperate to assist his academic needs. Some of the instructors were decent, but there was a high turnover rate for staff at this location. One year later, and his reading levels have not improved at all! I think for my son to gain any long term benefits, we would have had to sink $50,000+ of money into this program. That is a financial burden and risk that we are not willing to take! Definitely, not worth the time, program cost and gas money that I put into my car! Currently, we have my son working with a tutor after school for 5 days a week (close to home) and we have spent 1/4 the money. The results have been MUCH better and my son is happier because there is less drive time. read more

I wanted to update my review...I am leaving the 4 stars because I think the price is outrageous BUT it really helped our daughter and she LOVED it. Not many places can get a just turned 6 year old to sit and study in an office cubicle for 4 hours a day 5 days a week for 4 weeks during their summer vacation - and love it! I'm very pleased with her progress and it is definitely noticed by her teachers and tutors this school year! I am giving 4 stars bc I have yet to start the program with LMB but I saw the negative review posted here and had to share our experience because it was much different. I have had my daughter (she's 5.5) tested by 5 different professionals in a lot of different areas of expertise (occupational therapy, behavioral therapy, speech pathology, and auditory testing, and LMB in OP) to get to the bottom of why she is behind her kindergarten class in reading. Her school has a pretty intense Kindergarten program so I wanted to at least give her confidence in her ability to catch up to peers. Anyway, I felt the testing at LMB was top notch, and was very thorough with legs to each area. Their test came back with very similar results to other testers (not affiliated with LMB or even in the same state) but their approach to "fixing" my daughter seemed like a clear path over a 4 week period. I didn't feel like I was being sold to at all, I felt like they took the time to truly get to know my daughter (and even requested one more test the following day to gauge her against higher standards bc of her expectations at her school). I would not even be considering paying their fees if I didn't feel like Sierra (the director) and her crew hadn't spent the time with my daughter and actually had solid feedback. In addition, their findings mirrored what the other specialists found as well so it reaffirmed my gut instinct. It's not a cheap place but from talking with other professionals I know they yield proven results. I'm willing to try it this summer and will update my review once we go through it. I just didn't want people to be totally scared off by the unfortunate experience the other reviewer had. It's a frustrating and emotional journey when you're worried about how to help your child, and I would still consider LMB to help even if it's just their testing (which is WAY less expensive than the other testing we did! This place has been the best program for my son. The staff is forever trying new things to find out what works for my son. He has been here 20 months already and has made more progress here in that time then he did in 3.5yrs in our local school district. I am grateful for all the teachers and staff that work so hard to help my son. read more

I brought my son in for an exam a few months ago and the bad feeling about this place still weights on me. He's a bit slower than his peers at reading and these people promised they could help. Result day of that test showed that he was completely behind and the director suggested 300+ hours of help. That doesn't really sound like tutoring help to me, I said, and she explained that we needed to pull him out of school and get him started immediately and gave me a lot of forms to sign, no more talking. My son is doing fine in school this year after we hired a private tutor, not from this place, and she still calls me to try to get me to sign up because his test scores were so low. Well it sounds to me like your test doesn't know my son or you're so desperete for money you'll take a normal kid and do anything you can to freak out his mom. I got a feeling when I was in that results room like she was shady shady and she only saw my son as a potential sale. read more

The Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes center in Oak Park is top-notch. The instructors are professional, positive, energetic and most importantly have strong backgrounds in linguistics, english and evidence-based instructional methods. Our 6 1/2 year old son was not reading midway through first grade, so we took him to LMB for diagnostic testing before his school evaluation. We were able to discover both his cognitive strengths and weaknesses (weak "symbol imagery") through this process. Over a three month period, he completed 120 hrs of their Seeing Stars program, and all of the hard work, time and money paid off: he became a reader! When re-tested, his decoding skills were shown to have moved from the 33rd percentile to 94th percentile, and his word recognition skills went from the 31st percentile to the 86th percentile. His reading skills improved as well, and we are happy to say that he is reading at grade/age level. We are very happy that we didn't wait for the school's IEP to address our son's learning disability - every dollar spent was well worth it.
