"…read more Run by writer and juke box enthusiast Kevern Stafford and his wife Ruth, The Waves is up on the cliffs above the south end of Scarborough - one of the nicest areas of town, from what we saw. It's a beautiful house, stylishly decorated, spotlessly clean, and really just a lovely place to be. There's a funky guest sitting room with a juke box and a record player, breakfast is served on locally handmade furniture and pottery ... and wait till you see the breakfast menu. There's about a dozen choices, ranging from a full fry up made with local, quality produce to vegan kedgeree. Or maybe you fancy kippers, or a superfoods smoothie ... or soft boiled eggs with marmite soldiers? And then there's the wifi, and the helpful information on good pubs and restaurants, and just Kevern's overall effort to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as he can. All this for a reasonable price - our room was only £64. Really, I'd move in if I could. Go there!

The Guest House's location in town is great, being a five minute walk from the York Train Station via the new pedestrian bridge and within easy walking of everything else in town. The nearby Abbey's gorgeous gardens provided an especially pleasant shortcut into town, rain or shine. Then there were the accommodations. After staying in a cramped London hotel, we felt as if we could breathe! The bed was spacious, and the room and toilet facilities were great. I think the only criticism I can offer at all is that the shower drain was slow. The human element was wonderful, too. The owners of the Guest House were actually away, leaving us in the care of a professional B&B sitter. She was a kind, attentive hostess, happy to help us with anything we needed. We were greeted upon arrival with Yorkshire tea and warmed brownies! Our breakfasts were wonderful, too. She worked with our schedule so that we could eat there before doing a day tour and before our train departed. The default breakfast is a Full English, which we didn't do. My husband was happy with just the meat portion of the breakfast (those Yorkshire sausages...! don't expect teeny tiny American-style breakfast sausages) while I tried both of the lighter options, salmon with scrambled eggs and then Eggs Benedict. All accompanied by Yorkshire tea, of course, along with fresh toast. The breakfast bar included yogurt, a really good muesli, fresh fruit, and three excellent local jams and marmalades. We felt well-fortified for the day's adventures. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

The rooms are beautiful, sizable, quaint, cozy , warm and beautifully decorated. The beds are very comfortable. The rooms are provided with a serving area of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and cookies. Really nice to come back to after a full day out and about. The living room and dinning room is also inviting and playfully and warmly decorated. Fiona left menu cards of with a large selection of breakfast options. Breakfast was fantastic. I don't want to leave. I can't say enough about this lovely inn.

We were greeted by staff who showed us our room for four. It was spacious. Also, we had let them know our daughter was celebrating her birthday and when we arrived, there were balloons on her bed and a cake to share. We had a wonderful stay and would stay here again.

This package was a Christmas present for her, birthday present for me, and turned out to be a really great deal! Aldwark Manor was built in the 1860's (if I recall rightly from the brochure!) and has been tastefully extended to include a restaurant, spa and bar. It also has a very pretty golf course out the back too, so a perfect spot for the golfers among you! The package itself was a wonderful deal, lunch, dinner, bed, breakfast, use of the spa and a 25 minute spa treatment for a modest £99! The deal is only available through the week, but what a lovely way to see you through to the weekend. Our room was modern, contemporary and had a view of the golf course. It had all the things you would expect of a hotel room, with the exception of a fridge to chill our bottle of champagne (a special treat!). A quick call to reception solved our problem, and a bucket of ice was duly delivered. For dinner we had an allowance of £26 to spend and that was more than enough for a tasty salmon main and crumble for pudding! The hotel was quite quiet that night, and although it meant the restaurant was lacking in atmosphere a bit and there was no-one in the bar (the staff came to have a quick blether with us!), it also meant we had free use of the pool table...which I lost quite spectacularly...pool and champagne never mix well! The only thing I felt they could really have improved was the general operations of the spa! Now, I've been in a couple of 5 star hotels this year, so maybe I'm being picky, but there are a few changes I would make: 1. It would be useful to be shown around the spa so we wouldn't have to keep returning to the desk to ask where things were. 2. You were only allowed one dressing gown. I had to go for my spa treatment with a soggy bottom. Maybe it wouldn't be so troublesome to get another one? 3. There were a few maintenance issues around the showers etc. and I also had to tell the desk that there was no loo roll in the toilets...for a hotel as nice as this one, they should checking this regularly! 4. There was no water cooler around the sauna/steam room area. After a couple of visits we were quite thirsty, with no way of addressing it other than to head out to the spa bar and buy some water 5. Our spa lunch was presented to us without them asking what we actually wanted. We therefore got meat sandwiches (I'm a vegetarian who eats fish!), tuna sandwiches (my friend doesn't eat fish!) and no consideration at all to any food allergies (which neither of us have...but not the point!). After a quick sandwich swap, we were happy and lunch was light and tasty...but I still think they should be checking with guests before they serve! If they could get these issues sorted out, I think they'd be well on their way to being the kind of spa I think this Manor house deserves! After a filling breakfast, we packed our bags again and checked out of Aldwark Manor. As we trundled through the Yorkshire countryside, we pondered when we'd have the opportunity to be ladies of the manor again. Hopefully it won't be too long!

Ideally located on the Eastgate, just on the periphery of Pickering town centre, Grindale House…read moremakes an ideal base for exploring Pickering on foot for shopping during the day or sampling one of the multitude of restaurants of an evening. The main entrance is on the Eastgate (on foot only), whilst vehicular access is to the rear, through a seriously small gap between two terraced houses, requires absolute concentration! This leads into a spacious gravelled car park surrounded by pleasant gardens. Grindale House has several self catering lets, as well as the majority of bed and breakfast accommodation. As we arrived we were met by the friendly owner who served us a cup of tea and a biscuit in the resident's lounge, after our long drive - a nice touch. The lounge had fantastically comfortable leather sofas, a large flat-screen TV and resident's guide recommending places to eat and visit. After ascending some rather precipitous stairs, our room was modern in décor and tastefully furnished, a little compact perhaps, but with good facilities - tea and coffee making facilities, HDTV etc. The bathroom had underfloor heating too, very nice in the winter! The breakfast room doorway and many entrances throughout Grindale House have low beams, courtesy of the age of the building; so be careful if you're tall! The breakfast room was modern in feel and felt spacious when the guest house was partially full, but quite cramped when it approached full occupancy later in the week. Breakfast wise, there was a good range of fruit juices, cereals, fresh fruit etc. The Full English was great, perfectly cooked and full of flavour, the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs strangely bland and the pancakes just right. All in all though, a great base from which to explore North Yorkshire.

We booked a family room as we were travelling with two children so were given the Suite, a very nice setup with a living room a double room and a twin. Only found this place as the other more obvious hotels in the area were full, happy I did. The whole place was spotless, the welcome was great and the breakfast the next day was better than any 5* hotel I have stayed in. The only fault I could find was the bed was a little hard for my liking but that's just a personal preference. The best part was the price, what a bargain. Would definatly recommend this place to anyone who is visiting the area.

The proprietors supply a professional and warm welcome and are always at hand for any of your needs even if it is just a friendly chat. Athol House has five generously spaced rooms (one larger family room) and decorated to an elegantly high standard with plenty of storage and hangers. The standard facilities of TV and tea & coffee facility's avail themselves as well as a heated towel rail, travel cot, high chair and ironing equipment at request. I also found a BT OpenZone WiFi hub and 3G connectivity for the more online traveller. Breakfast is an area for a B&B to win or lose repeat clientele but there is very little chance of you coming away anything less than impressed and contented. Various cereals and fresh fruits avail themselves whilst you await your cooked meal. The plates served are always picture perfect and you can tell that the cook has an eye for perfection. Not to miss, the scrambled eggs are a cut above. Athol House can hold its head up high, I've had worse nights staying in four star business hotel chains and certainly worse breakfasts.

Finding the place is not the easiest thing in the world -- it's secreted away amongst the back streets of Pickering. The Guest House is actually a converted mill, and there are still several original features still preserved in the building (or at least there were 6 years ago!). The owners were very accommodating (no pun intended) -- they couldn't have done more to make us welcome. Indeed, they even opened the place up for us on Christmas Day when normally they would have been shut. All in all, Vivers Mill was a great place to stay: highly recommended.
