The whole atmosphere of the hotel was impressive; it gave the impression of being a well-run, warm and welcoming family hotel. The food was superb; very tasty and flavoursome, and well-presented too. It's a great pity that circumstances since have prevented us from having Christmas lunch there again, but if you get the opportunity to eat there at Christmas or at any other time, my advice would be to take it: I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The main entrance is on the Eastgate (on foot only), whilst vehicular access is to the rear, through a seriously small gap between two terraced houses, requires absolute concentration! This leads into a spacious gravelled car park surrounded by pleasant gardens. Grindale House has several self catering lets, as well as the majority of bed and breakfast accommodation. As we arrived we were met by the friendly owner who served us a cup of tea and a biscuit in the resident's lounge, after our long drive - a nice touch. The lounge had fantastically comfortable leather sofas, a large flat-screen TV and resident's guide recommending places to eat and visit. After ascending some rather precipitous stairs, our room was modern in décor and tastefully furnished, a little compact perhaps, but with good facilities - tea and coffee making facilities, HDTV etc. The bathroom had underfloor heating too, very nice in the winter! The breakfast room doorway and many entrances throughout Grindale House have low beams, courtesy of the age of the building; so be careful if you're tall! The breakfast room was modern in feel and felt spacious when the guest house was partially full, but quite cramped when it approached full occupancy later in the week. Breakfast wise, there was a good range of fruit juices, cereals, fresh fruit etc. The Full English was great, perfectly cooked and full of flavour, the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs strangely bland and the pancakes just right. All in all though, a great base from which to explore North Yorkshire.

Only found this place as the other more obvious hotels in the area were full, happy I did. The whole place was spotless, the welcome was great and the breakfast the next day was better than any 5* hotel I have stayed in. The only fault I could find was the bed was a little hard for my liking but that's just a personal preference. The best part was the price, what a bargain. Would definatly recommend this place to anyone who is visiting the area.

I booked our accommodation online. Its location (ten minutes walk from the train station) is perfect, right on the Crescent Terrace on the West Cliff. Our room was the Classic Bay, spacious, light and comfortable with a great view of the North Sea. The owners, the Gallaghers, were gracious hosts, friendly and very accommodating of our requests and our needs (we left very early on our last morning, prior to breakfast, but they provided a very satisfying boxed meal. Breakfasts are a special treat, with a variety of choices, tasty food properly cooked and politely served by the attentive waitstaff. I should also mention that the price is quite competitive, also. For a three-night stay, they offer a discount of 5%, so ours was 95 pounds per night ($147). All in all, a real treat!!

The staff were really attentive and very pleasant and personable without being in your face! Because it was a special occasion I had booked a cabin. I chose a spa cabin, a little bit more expensive than the standard but still excellent value and the jacuzzi was enormous! After a bottle of bubbly and a luxurious soak in the bubbles we were ready for our bed on the mezzanine. The rooms were terrifically well appointed and quite by far the most reasonably priced luxury we've enjoyed in a long time. I have a feeling we're going to be holding a lot more celebrations at The Gardeners!

The hotel is situated on the roundabout where the A169 meets the A170 -- so it's certainly very accessible. There's a dedicated car park (accessed from the A169) where it's usually possible to find a car-parking space. Inside the hotel is well decorated and very pleasant. The restaurant serves all the things you'd expect it to, and the quality of the food cannot be faulted. It's probably slightly above average pricewise, but then you get what you pay for It's opposite the Crossways hotel and part of me fears than during the economic downturn only one of these two great hotels may survive. If so, Pickering would be robbed of a great place to eat.

You may be able to book a fantastic view, but the room will be a massive disappointment. I could not get into my room early, so when I finally gained entry at nearly midnight, I found that the window had been left open all day and the room was freezing cold. There is no control of heat by room - and as of October 1, the building's boilers still had not been turned on! I hunted for a spare blanket - but the wardrobe did not have one. I tried to call down to ask for one, but the room did not have a phone! The second day, my bed was made, but the bathroom was not cleaned. In fact, the previous renters soap was still in the tub. The tub wall is several feet high - so elderly folks beware. My liquid shampoo body wash dispenser was empty and never re-filled, despite requesting it in person with the chambermaid. A bug was crawling on my shaving kit. Hard, uncomfortable bed Chipping paint on the sills Marked walls No doorknob at the main entry (where do you hang the do not disturb sign?)
