    Twin Room.
    Ting A.

The hotel is located on the other side of River Ouse away from the main city, but is just a ten-minute or so walk from the attractions. Our stay was just for one night, so it was convenient that the hotel is in the middle between the York Station and downtown. We had booked a Twin Room for a little over £200 per night. It was spacious and had no issues. Standard complimentary breakfast buffet is provided.

Make an English breakfast at the buffet every morning... Nap the rest of the day. Yummeh.

Spent about a week in York running around the city wall, eating puddings, and learning the intricacies of chip butty culture. At the end of each day, I retired to Hampton by Hilton to rest my weary head. My observations: -Quiet! Surprisingly so. The only noise I heard was the freshers walking through the streets singing songs about Dumbledore -Decent gym. Dumbbells only go up 45kg but it's enough to make a challenging circuit -Awesome breakfast. For the first few mornings, before I was disgusted with myself, I made myself a plate with as close to a full English as I could. Bacon, sausage, beans on toast, eggs, and stewed tomatoes. Mmm mmm. Not the best meal at 6 AM when you've got 16 hours of filming ahead of you, but I'll be damned if I come to England and not be English my belly -Late night food includes pizza. I ordered a Hawaiian pizza. In York. At 10 PM. And guess what? It didn't suck -Good location. Close to the train station, an easy walk to the city walls (all of York is technically), and easy access to the city center Downsides are no water bottles--you've got to buy it. In-room coffee was weak versus other hotels that had Nespresso. Definitely would consider staying again next time I'm in Yawkshaw.

Grand Hotel & Spa - The Grand, York

This is a lovely hotel in an excellent location. The concierge and valets were outstanding-helpful,…read moreattentive, and very personable. The one gentleman shook all of our hands as we left which was so nice. We had breakfast at the Rise twice, very good, and dinner once, which was good though only as one server was working our side of the busy dining room, it was slow. We stayed in the modern wing in a family room which was spacious and lovely. In terms of negatives, the mattress was hard and lumpy, and there was the only one small hook to hang towels and robes, so not much room for our party of three. I mention this because the Grand has a sustainability focus and encourages guests to re-use towels, which we did: more hooks are needed. The reading lamps on the headboard did not work. The major problem we had was the temperature of our room: the thermostat read 16 but it was more like 20; too warm for sleeping. I called down to reception and concierge and there was no answer - multiple times - I think perhaps the phones were malfunctioning. I reached an operator who said she'd leave a note as she was leaving in five minutes. I went down to the front desk and the staff member told me she could adjust it from a control panel in the lobby (?), however, the room stayed too warm. This definitely took away from the experience as I didn't sleep well and expected better from a five star hotel. Lastly, and this is small, but the greenery out front (topiaries and flowers) and in the hallways are plastic, again, not five star. For a hotel focused on sustainability, natural plants would be much more suitable.

Ask for an upgrade. Rooms are SMALL. VERY SMALL. The concierge is simply AMAZING and can help you…read morewith all your needs. Very VERY attentive and multitasking. The hotel is old and overwhelmingly big, but the location couldn't be better and the buffet breakfast with their beetroot smoked salmon was something we are STILL talking about. One of the spa employees was a real ditz, killing a star off the review. But on another visit, we had a tour of the vault, because my curious george husband HAD to see it (that is where the manicures happen). Upgraded room was super spacious and made for a lot of comfort with all the ammenities that make a "getaway" vacation special!

The staff is warm and welcoming, "special shout out to Ian", it was clean, the grounds were beautiful, the room was spacious, complimentary KitKats and beverages in the room daily, and great bathroom. A quick note on the subject of the bathroom; it was good size, had a tub with shower, great water pressure, plenty of hot water, and good quality complementary toiletries. There is a restaurant onsite serving delicious woodfired cooked pizzas with great service. The bar was warm and welcoming with attentive staff and lively conversations. On top of everything else it is a nearly perfect location. You are a quick walk from the train station and the center of town where all of the attractions are located. This hotel does not have AC in the rooms but it is York so usually that would not be much of a problem but when we visited it was a heat wave. That being said they did give us a fan and it was really not that bad because it stayed reasonably cool as well as it cooling more at night. In short I cannot recommend this hotel enough and we look forward to hopefully staying there again if we are so fortunate.

The bartenders were super friendly. In face all of the staff was very eager to help with any questions we had. Parking is in the same building just a few steps away from the front desk. I had asked for a riverview room, but they messed that up somehow and we ended up with a room with a window beside the sidewalk, which was not the greatest. The tub was very high and slippery. My SIL fell in her tub getting out and ended up with some bruises - nothing serious thankfully. No breakfast is included and we were not able to get reservations at a time that worked for us. There were several options within a 5 minute walk.

A little bit of history I have learnt is that it was built in 2000 and was devastated by the great flood, just after opening. It appeared on television with residents being rescued by boats. Two little things that stops me giving it five stars, firstly no room service, so no breakfast in bed. The other is the price in the bar for certain drinks, although not so bad as many pubs and restaurants are within a few minute walk. If your looking for a clean, comfortable hotel at reasonable prices with no frills, you won't go far wrong here.
