Abbey Guest House

This charming B&B was our home away from home for three nights in York. We adored everything about…read moreit. I'd requested a window view room, and our second story view looked down on the River Ouse. The Guest House's location in town is great, being a five minute walk from the York Train Station via the new pedestrian bridge and within easy walking of everything else in town. The nearby Abbey's gorgeous gardens provided an especially pleasant shortcut into town, rain or shine. Then there were the accommodations. After staying in a cramped London hotel, we felt as if we could breathe! The bed was spacious, and the room and toilet facilities were great. I think the only criticism I can offer at all is that the shower drain was slow. The human element was wonderful, too. The owners of the Guest House were actually away, leaving us in the care of a professional B&B sitter. She was a kind, attentive hostess, happy to help us with anything we needed. We were greeted upon arrival with Yorkshire tea and warmed brownies! Our breakfasts were wonderful, too. She worked with our schedule so that we could eat there before doing a day tour and before our train departed. The default breakfast is a Full English, which we didn't do. My husband was happy with just the meat portion of the breakfast (those Yorkshire sausages...! don't expect teeny tiny American-style breakfast sausages) while I tried both of the lighter options, salmon with scrambled eggs and then Eggs Benedict. All accompanied by Yorkshire tea, of course, along with fresh toast. The breakfast bar included yogurt, a really good muesli, fresh fruit, and three excellent local jams and marmalades. We felt well-fortified for the day's adventures. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Noise sensitive sleepers may want a room away from the rail line, but we slept through it just fine.
The York Priory Guest House

I found this place after hours of searching online. It checked all my boxes for location, cost,…read moreroom presentation, access to river walks, parking and so on. The staff are really friendly and treat you like honoured guests. Our room was prettily furnished and the only negatives are that we look into a busy (and noisy) road and street lights shine straight into the room. The blackout blinds help enormously in mitigation. The walls are a bit thin and you can hear people in the room above loudly enough to keep you awake and/or wake you up. There are remains of some of the old York Priory in the garden which is really cool. Breakfast is from 0730h to 0930h and there is a good menu of varied cooked dishes plus cereals, fruits, yoghurts, bread etc. The weekend we stayed there is a minimum 2 night booking rule - not sure if this is year-round or not - and we booked through the Visit York site. Our superior double room was £158 (room not pp) including breakfast. There is also a residents bar. We' definitely stay here again.
Bowman's Guesthouse
Bowman's Guesthouse is nestled in the middle of B&B row in central York. While the guest houses…read morethat I walked past before getting to Bowman's looked very nice as well, I find it hard to believe that any of them would provide better hospitality than Bowman's did. Debra, the proprietor of Bowman's guesthouse, and her partner David (who is responsible for our scrumptious full English breakfast!) perfectly fulfilled my image of warm & friendly Northerners. My first live interaction with Debra was when she called to inquire how far away we were from arriving as she needed to go out and buy gluten-free bread for my travel buddy who has Celiac disease. That attention to detail was consistent throughout our stay - the rooms were impeccably clean, bathroom was fully stocked with necessary toiletries, Green & Black chocolate bars adorned the tea kettle & cups, and all the information you could possibly want about York was available in the corridor. I also loved the stories Debra shared about how she sometimes stays in the guesthouse when there are guests who might need extra help as was once the case when an elderly guest fell out of bed in the middle of the night! The perfect B&B experience!

During check-in we were given a map and told how to get to the best tour spots and the best food and pubs. Then came the best part . The y let me borrow tools so I could break into my suitcase case. I had a great shower and a fantastic night sleep. I would come back here again and again.

Darren was friendly and helpful - he…read moregave us easy directions, great restaurant recommendations and good tips for our whirlwind visit to York. Without him, it really wouldn't have been as successful as it was. The room was ready when we arrived - neat and clean with functional furniture and free wifi access. There was a small snack and movie table in the hall for guests looking to satisfy their sweet tooth. Breakfast in the morning was very tasty and had a little something for everyone - sausage, porridge, toast, cereals, juices - all of them good fuel for our day out. Even though we only stayed one night, Darren let us leave our bags so that we could sightsee unencumbered. The location was great once you knew the little byways and alleys to take that made it a breeze to get into town or to the train station. The only downside was that the bed wasn't the greatest. It was too short for my husband (he's only 5'10) and was too soft for the two of us to share it comfortably (we tended to just roll towards the center). It wasn't a major problem for us since we were only there for one night, but a longer stay would have made it really uncomfortable. For a single traveler, though, it likely wouldn't have been an issue.
Apple House

But the true magic is the owners. It's rare to be treated that well by a hotel. Not only do you get a full cooked breakfast, it's made to order. It's served in a lovely room. You get to select the time you'd like to eat from 4 seatings. Danielle went out of her way to help us find our way around York as it was our first visit. But where they went above and beyond was, I am disabled, her husband took our bags up to our room on the top floor while she was helping us figure out where we wanted to go in the city. And then the next day when we asked her how we got to the train station, she literally picked up my bags and walked my husband and I to the train. It was the kindest thing a hotel owner has ever done for us. We will return to York someday and I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

I'm not sure what happened to their room, or what their expectations were with regards to room size, but this is NOT a luxury b&b. For something like $50-60 a night, you get a clean, comfortable room with a private bathroom. Yes, the room is small. Yes, the stairs are narrow. Yes, the shower lacks some water pressure (although they seem to be working on it). But recognize that you are staying at a b&b and paying $50 a night. Not a luxury hotel at $150-200/night. The hosts were very friendly and hospitable. You can specify what breakfast food you like for the morning (eggs, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, beans, etc) and a hot breakfast will be served to you between 8:30-9 am. I had no issues with checking in and the hosts were there to show me my room and make sure I was okay. Bed was comfortable. The toilet flushed after I violated it. All was well. 10/10 would recommend.

Nicely decorated, spotlessly clean and with a good sized en suite. The B&B has parking, and is an easy 10/15 stroll from York centre. The owners were friendly and helpful, allowing us to leave our car there even though we arrived in York well before our check in time. Service was excellent. The breakfast was delicious.
