We visited Lime in the Coconut for the first time to celebrate a birthday, and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. From the start, our server was inattentive and seemed completely dismissive when we mentioned we were celebrating a birthday. There was no acknowledgment at all, which made the occasion feel overlooked. To make matters worse, on a Friday night they were out of all draft beer, which was surprising for a restaurant and bar that promotes its tropical cocktails and lively atmosphere. Dessert was the biggest letdown. The mango sticky rice was honestly one of the worst versions we've ever had--poorly prepared and lacking flavor. The chocolate cake was so dry that it was practically inedible. The tropical décor and hidden tiki speakeasy "X" are interesting concepts, but the poor service and disappointing food overshadowed what should have been a special birthday celebration. Updated 2025 review - This place hasn't changed much and is conveniently located on Third Avenue in downtown Chula Vista. There is parking in front of the restaurant and parking in the back in a lot. Parking is not free or validated. Staff is always extremely friendly when we've come. This last time we came with a party of 7-8 people and was able to be accommodated during the holiday. For those that do not know, they offer a "speakeasy" in the back and the Tiki Vibe is date night/romantic and you must make reservations. They offer some of the same food items as a variety of tiki drinks! It is definitely our favorite part of the restaurant. While the food is good, we love coming for the drinks! Our bartenders/waitresses have always been super nice and quick, even though they use fresh ingredients for their drinks. The volcano (I believe that's what it is called) drink is a whole event! This place was interesting to say the least. First off I think it is way over priced. 5 tiny coconut shrimp for 17.00 I could have bought a box at Costco for that price. The ahi nachos were okay way more chips then ahi, but I expected that. My sliders were meh I was just not impressed. The music was good at first, then it just turned into techno with the same song on replay. The service was great the people there were very attentive and friendly. This is our second time here in a year and we came back because our first time was really good. Parking can be a hit or miss so once you find a spot, take it! Food: coconut shrimp was delicious, perfectly fried. Our main dishes were a little slow coming out which was surprising because we were 1 of 2 tables being occupied so it didn't seem busy but maybe it was between shifts since the bartender was also our server? I got the tofu Bai flight and it was great! The tofu was cooked perfectly and the sauce was a great addition. My husband got the loco moco and after a few bites, realized the hamburger was undercooked. He lost his appetite after that. We brought it to the servers attention and they were kind enough to remove it from our bill. Dessert: the mango sticky rice was good. The rice Krissy's sprinkled on top gave it a nice crunch. This is a cute tiki-themed restaurant (family friendly) with a tiki-themed speakeasy in the back. I highly doubt the speakeasy allows kids. The restaurant is fine. They offer a happy hour of selected foods and drinks until 7 p.m. and who does happy hour until 7 p.m.? I love that. We tried the fries with kalua pork added and it is a massive dish that tastes absolutely wonderful. The fries are big and crispy and excellent. I would come here and get this dish every day, if I could. It is on the happy hour menu and you need to get it.. On the other hand, the musubi balls, also on the happy hour menu, while cooked perfectly, were really just breaded rice balls with tiny flecks of spam. Is spam so precious that no more than a few flecks could be added? This dish was just ok. I was extremely disappointed in the happy your mai tai. It was mostly tasteless. But the night was saved by the Painkiller (served in the speakeasy) which was perfectly made and was creamy, delicious, and wonderful. It also packs a wallop so be careful. I should add they do 8 different mocktails here. I tried two of them and they were both excellent and fairly priced. So, they get big points for the non-drinking mocktail crowd. The speakeasy is darker and, frankly, more fun that the restaurant but there is no reason you cannot hit both of them in the same night, like we did. The decor in the speakeasy if fun and playful. Overall Service was a little spotty in the restaurant but good in the speakeasy. Service in the restaurant needs some work. There is street parking and also a pay lot in the back. So disappointing. Went for happy hour. The wings were so poorly flavored and felt low quality. The sliders and fries were okay. My Mai Tai was like a big drink of ice and some flavored water. Easily the worst cocktail I've ever had. Nice looking place but service and food and drink lacked. I've been meaning to write this review for a while now, but a recent incident finally gave me the push I needed. I've been to Lime in the Coconut a few times, and each occasion brought out a different version of me. No matter which Mari showed up whether lively or low-key, I was always welcomed with warmth and grace, even when it may not have been the most convenient. One visit stands out in particular: I arrived with a group on a Saturday night. Fully prepared to be turned away, I began the conversation by saying I understand if you say no, but to my delight, they went above and beyond to accommodate us, seating our party in the speakeasy. I wanted to treat my husband to a scorpion bowl (or two... or more!) for his birthday, surrounded by our entourage.  Not only were we served, but we were treated to the visual delight of fire dancing atop our scorpion bowls. It was a memorable night that left me eager to return. On one visit, I wasn't feeling my best and just needed a calm evening to catch up with a friend. We sat at the bar in the restaurant and were served by a wonderful young man who made the best drink. I ordered his favorite, and the name escapes me, but the bartender can't steer you wrong. We caught up over a drink and an appetizer it was a great night. Most recently, my daughter celebrated her birthday here after we were told we were "too rowdy" at The Luau (their loss!). It's safe to say we wear our joy loudly, and Lime in the Coconut embraced us with open arms. With a big, lively family like mine, we tend to celebrate everything and everyone, and we're grateful for a place that doesn't just tolerate that energy but celebrates it alongside us. Whether you're looking to toast with friends, share a quiet moment, or mark a special occasion with laughter and a few scorpion bowls, this place delivers. So I went to the little bar they have behind the restaurant, it's like a speak easy that's connected to them. This place is still tiki inspired, the service was good, friendly, nice people. The atmosphere was nice, great music and good vibes. The drinks were ok but the food was not that great, I got the steak or beef yakisoba and it was awful, I'm sorry I hate to say that but it's true. I went here with my friends and had one of the most confusing and disappointing restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. We had a reservation for the speakeasy 'X' and arrived a few minutes early. Instead of being welcomed or given any direction, we were bounced between the front and the back with pretty much no communication. It already felt disorganized before we even sat down. When we were finally seated in the speakeasy, the menus we were given very clearly said "X Happy Hour 5-6pm". But when we asked the server about happy hour, she told us there were no food or drink specials. Then, in the same breath, she said she could do a $9 mai tai or martini... except she didn't actually have olive juice to make a martini. So basically no real specials and nothing that matched the menu. We decided to move to the front because at least the menu said the same happy hour applied there too. Unfortunately the experience didn't get better. We sat at the bar for nearly 20 minutes without anyone greeting us, giving us menus, or even offering water. When the bartender finally came by, the explanation of the happy hour specials was vague and unhelpful. She was talking to us like she was annoyed we even asked. We ordered 3 mai tais, hoping a tiki bar could at least get the basics right, but all 3 drinks were pretty much undrinkable. Mine tasted off immediately like ingredients were missing or the orange juice was sour or bad. None of us finished our drinks. My friend even complained about the drink in front of a server and nobody said anything. We also ordered a happy hour appetizer that came out cold and tasted like frozen food. At that point we just paid and left to eat somewhere else. I was disappointed because we left and paid with our drinks untouched and the bartender told us to have a great night. I wish she asked if she could maybe remake the drinks... What's frustrating is that the concept and the decor are genuinely cool, so I really wanted to enjoy this place. But the service, communication, and quality of both drinks and food were so poor that I can't see myself returning. read more

They had a speakeasy pop-up during Christmas, so we checked them out. It looked like they were closed, but the entrance was towards the back. They had an inflatable Santa and Santa hats, along with tiki decor. We weren't too hungry, so we shared the pupu platter. It included some wings, coconut shrimp, nachos, and fried balls. It was a lot pretty good! For drinks, I got a mocktail and hubby chose the Sippin' Santa. The drinks were refreshing and came in cute mugs! Went here on a Friday night with one of my girlfriends for a quick catch up and easy dinner. We were happy to catch them during happy hour so that was nice in and of itself. Walking in, they definitely have the theming down. Its a beautiful island themed spot, nice and open, with plenty of seating and a bright bar. We ordered margaritas and shared the nachos with ahi poke. Our server was very sweet and made sure to check in on us a couple of times throughout our dinner. The margaritas were pretty yummy and we opted for the tajin rim. I wish it was slightly more boozy, but it still was delicious. The nachos were yummy and filling. I loved that they were wonton chips and the poke was nice and fresh. It wasn't a skimpy amount of fish either, nor a skimpy portion. I think my girlfriend and I barely ate a corner each and we were stuffed! I know this spot also has a secret little speakeasy that we didn't get a chance to check out but if given the chance, I'm sure we would have. Ate at this place for the first time last night. I had their salt and pepper wings during happy hour as well as their Mai Tai. Which were pretty good. I did think their happy hour prices were very good and worth it but I did notice an exceptionally long wait time in between ordering and receiving our food. At first I thought it was because we were a large group (9) and maybe that's why service was a bit slow but I did notice one of my friends ask what kind of draft beers they had and the waitress said "I'm not sure I'm just filling in for someone" and she did this quite often. My friend actually just got up and went to the bar to ask what was on draft. So I wouldn't say service was as great; also considering that there wasn't too many people in the restaurant itself. We ordered: Coconut shrimp - lightly coated with coconut (which was a plus), perfectly crispy and not overcooked Chicken wings (salt & pepper) - crispy outside and juicy inside, perfectly cooked and delicious Musubi (pork belly) - Oh My! Pork belly was melt in your mouth tender! Not all fat neither! It had a good portion of meat to fat. Definitely a MUST TRY if your a fan of pork belly. Vegetable stir fry - Could use a bit more flavor or spices but, perfectly cooked where there was still bite/crunch to the veggies. If in the area, definitely give this location a try! It's a bit pricey for what you might expect to pay at another spot for the same food. The table ordered Yakisoba Noodles, Chicken Wings, Shrimp Tacos and Bánh mì. The wings were saucy. The tacos were a bit overcooked. The Bánh mì were overpriced and lacked a lot of flavor (I think they need to pickle the onions a bit more). The noodles weren't too bad. The tofu I ordered was cooked to perfection. So that was a positive. The drinks I'd give 4 stars. Came in tiki cups. Super tasty. Not a thing I'd change. They are up there in price. Just ate here on Sunday July 20 2025! Food was kinda good when it finally came out 20 minutes after we ordered. Fish and chips was under cooked so the batter was a little raw, crispy pork tacos were tasty, and my wife liked her salad. Service was bad! We got 2 glasses of water and then no more water for us! There were 4 of us and one was a toddler. Waitress seemed tired and over it, bartender wasn't much help either. This guy couldn't even help me with ketchup!! It took about 10 minutes to have someone take our order to where i thought we were doing it wrong. I had to ask if there was an order window or table app! I own a small business and I hate giving small businesses bad reviews but today I wanted my money back. It's been years since I didn't tip. Owner needs new staff and I know it's hard to get good help now days. Sorry I might go back when I have time without a 2 year old. We sat at a table and ordered the Mai Thai, Zombie and a banana flavored drink. They don't have a blender so they cannot make blended drinks. All of the drinks were OK. The vibe wasn't the best. Came here super hungry after comi-con with 4 super hungry kids too. We first went to a restaurant across the street but they started playing super loud live music and the kids couldn't even hear each other talk. So since this was nice and quiet, mellow we skadoodled over here to enjoy a peaceful meal. Service was prompt, the restaurant wasn't busy whatsoever. The host was super kind and as our server made her way to our table she was great as well. The restaurant was super cute! Very aesthetically pleasing, roomy and comfy. We started by ordering an appetizer. I picked out the Pupu plater which includes wings, fried Misubi balls, nachos (you pick the flavor) and coconut shrimp. For the nachos we chose the Kalua pork. And this is where it started to go downhill the fried misubi balls had a good flavor for the breading but I couldn't find the spam. The wings had no seasoning whatsoever, and the nachos had some hot sauce we weren't expecting that was way too hot and none of the kids enjoyed. The kalua pork was bland. Sadness 2 of the kiddos ordered the moco loco. I was excited as my son has not had it before and I love moco locos. The plate was MASSIVE! I was like perfect! Hungry teenagers will be satisfied. But it was quite the opposite. The beef was WAY too salty, the gravy was pretty bland and the rice was crispy and too overly garlicky. My son's ground beef steak was undercooked and so were his eggs, the breading on the meat was also falling off, I tried it because I know kids can be picky. But I wouldn't eat it either. The other plate wasn't undercooked but still didn't taste good. I ordered the huli huli half chicken, with a side of steamed rice and vegetable stir fry. And more sadness begins. Well, the chicken was hard to separate the pieces, the skin had the right crisp but the wrong seasoning it was WAY too salty in some parts and sweet in others. There was no consistency in any of the flavor and I picked at different parts of the chicken. My steam rice was crispy. Steamed=soft, not sure why it was crispy. And the vegetable stir fry deserves the name of peppers stir fry, as that's all I got with the exception of maybe 3 ultra thin slices of carrots, and it wasn't savory at all. My other kid ordered Da Burger... one bite in and was done, ate some French fries which I tried and had no seasoning at all, the ketchup was sweet. Fourth kid only ordered French fries ‍ I really really wish this could've been a much better experience and if salty and bland is the flavor they're going for then that's a very specific audience, Hawaiian food isn't flavorless or salty though. We came here two years ago and we happy to bring our family here to try it. I don't know what has happened in two years, but the food was mediocre at best. We ordered the loco moco, the happy flour appetizer tri, garlic noodles with prok belly, bao bun flight, yakisoba noodles, and the rice bowl with pork belly. The timing for the food was horrible. Everyone received their food at different times, some if it came out cold. One of the meals (yakisoda) came after everyone had finished their meals and it was terrible. We decided to add a dessert, the Lava Cake. Big mistake! It took a good 40 minutes for the food to arrive. Oh goodness. Where do I begin? Service. Well, I called ahead of time, a couple days in advance. They do not take reservations so I told them what day and time my party of 8 would be in. I was told it prob would be slow. Well... it's downtown Chula Vista and summer is right around the corner. It was not slow. We were told due to staff shortages for the day we would have to wait an hour. I explained I called etc. my friends wanted to go elsewhere when someone else stepped in and said 15 min wait. There was enough room and accepted we could only order drinks at first. It took about 20 mins to get drinks. Then we were only allowed to order half the appetizers we wanted. That took 45 mins to come out. I'm glad we were enjoying each others company. Then we were allowed to order food. We had been there 2 hours at that point and my reservation for the speakeasy had text me. They were very nice to move us back there. On their website it said it was closed on the day we went so there was only one other large party back there and no one else. The host in the back and bartender were VERY nice, informative, and accommodating. Our food came out as soon as we were seated in X. We also ordered more drinks that came to us now promptly. Bao pork belly was soooo good as well as the Masubi balls. Overall, I would only come back for the speakeasy due to the long wait. The live music was very nice in the front of the restaurant while we waited though. I love how the whole building is open to outside. I hope this place can make improvements to its staffing situation because it has such great potential! Also update X days and hours online. Maybe open it earlier in the day for Sunday funday. read more

I came in to celebrate a friend with a small group. The service was top tier, and the ambiance and design of the place is great, love the open design. I didn't have any trouble finding parking, but I could see how it could get challenging. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and they all were very good. I was very impressed. The drinks I ordered were good, but a little expensive. Overall, no complaints and would come back. read more

We had a decent size group come in tonight for the speakeasy. Kevin & his wife Christianne are the best. Being that its a midweek Wednesday night, for Our group to find a spot to have had an amazing time has its challenges, but they took us in & enjoyed ourselves immensely. Kevin & Christianne welcomed us & set us up with our own booth for our party of 10. Food was amazing, our server (Kassy) took great care of us & with parking being super easy & lots of it in the area, Im pretty sure we'll be back again. We ordered a ton of food. I particularly loved the Ahi Poke Nachos, & my Mai Tai... how could I go wrong. If you're planning to go out here be sure to make a reservation online.
