Best pho in Oslo! The service was great and hospitable. It was also nice ordering from actual Vietnamese people after being in mainly European speaking countries. We were seated quickly and had time to look at the menu before ordering. My fiancé ordered the Pho bo (beef) and I ordered the pho ga (chicken). It's a little different from the usual pho we order because they include meatballs in pho bo (which normally would be a separate type of order) and the pho ga had marinated chicken. The broth was light and savory, with much of the flavor coming from the meat. It was so flavorful!! We also ordered the summer roll, a usual appetizer everywhere we go, which was packed well and had eggs and a tiny egg roll! I haven't had it like this anywhere else (not even back at home). Was feeling a bit under the weather and saw that this place had excellent reviews. Sadly their Pho wasn't that great and at $20 per bowl was a little excessive. The egg rolls smelled funny and didn't finish them. The lemongrass duck was very good though and was worth the trip. Never have I seen a Vietnamese dish like this. The pho here is 10/10. After just one sip of the pho broth, I was hooked. It is so flavorful and easily one of my favorite pho's that I've ever had. The only other times I have such a reaction to pho is 1) my mom's pho--we are Vietnamese and 2) Pho Dien in Houston TX. I've pho from so many places I can't count. And this is now my top (aside from my mom's of course). The spring rolls are perfect. Good amount of shrimp and pork. Sauce is amazing. This is an authentic, no-frills restaurant. Pretty good! Sadly, when we arrived on a Friday night at 830, they had already run out of pho broth by 730. Seriously?? We got the fried egg rolls to start (really cool fry, delicious). Make sure to get the three sauces to enhance the rolls! Instead of pho, I then got the pork wok fried rice noodles instead. Noodles were tasty, lots of pork and vegetables. I also got to taste my dining partners dish - he ordered #22 which was wok fried noodles (these were curly, basically packaged ramen but so so delicious) and every imaginable meat they had on hand. Other than a sad shock of not being able to order pho, the meal was good. It was super busy when we arrived so for better service, come earlier or later. Otherwise, good place for noodles! After living in Norway in another city for two years, I was craving decent vietnamese food so badly. This place is not the fanciest, but the fanciest vietnamese places are never the best, the busiest are. And boy is it busy. That being said, I've never had a problem getting a table here relatively quickly. My favourites are the Pho Bo and Vermicelli noodles with spring rolls. This place is great authentic vietnamese, not some fusion or place that tries to do chinese, vietnamese, korean, japanase and sometime pizza!? yet fails at all of them. This place is most described by one word: authentic! I am not an expert of Vietnamese cuisine, but the whole feeling in this place gives you an authentic feeling. On the downside it is very very busy. You might end up waiting for a table, being changed from one table to another in order to fit more people or to be forgotten with your food order. But again, although they are busy, the quality of the food is good and the prices are cheap. Hence I believe it is a restaurant worth visiting for Vietnamese cravings or generally for healthy food. read more

We were in Oslo for a night at the very end of our two week Europe trip. I got a cold and my boyfriend and I were tired of European foods. Moreover our Airbnb hosts suggested this place for great affordable Vietnamese foods. I would have never thought to have tried Vietnamese foods in Norway! So we decided to grab some pho! As expected, the foods here were probably the second best worst Vietnamese foods we've ever had. The first one being our time in Paris. Coming from the Bay Area and from a family that cooks Southeast Asian foods religiously, the foods here sucked given the price in American dollars. But hey, granted it is Norway and ingredients may be costly due to imports, so 3 stars it is for effort and having a place that opens past 9pm in Oslo. Otherwise we would have given it an easy 1 star. The service was horrendous, the hygiene of this place is atrocious, but we were desperate for Asian tasting foods, especially pho to heal my cold. The pho was flavorless. The noodles weren't the typical rice noodles you would get in pho. The portion was not generous. The meat... I can't even begin explain the weird texture of the meat. Normally it's thin slices of steak or beef balls or flank or what have you... but I got some weird chunks of beef! And for $20 a bowl?! That was the most expensive pho I've ever bought in my life! I have been lucky enough to visit Vietnam and a few other countries in Asia and I consider the cuisine to be one my favourites when dining out. I was delighted to see that Oslo seemed to have a good few Vietnamese restaurants and this was the second one out of the two I tried. Inside it had an authentic Asian cafe type feel and the staff were helpful when asked something but not overly friendly. The menu was quite long and had lots of interesting options that made it hard to just settle on one. I ended up with a chicken, noodle, beansprout dish which also had plenty of salad. It also came with ground peanuts and a tangy sauce up put over the top. I enjoyed it all without being particularly blown away by it, but I reckon that was more about the dish I chose & personal taste rather than the quality of the food on offer. Nice place for a meal, seemed to be quite a good effort at authentic food and was not to expensive. (Not cheap either though) Worth a look if your in the area and fancy some Asian food and a beer. Came here because we saw great Yelp reviews but it turned out to be a quite a disappointment. The restaurant was really busy when we got there. We had no problem waiting but the attitude of the staff was horrible. Aside from the fact they took forever to come take our order, they treated us very differently from the "local" customers. For example, they told us there's no spring rolls because they're too busy to make them now, but we saw them serving the dish to the table that came in after us. When we wanted to place additional order, they kept ignoring us. The quality of food was also not up to standard. The rice was soggy and the soup was very oily..... After paying 650 kr for one appetizer and two entrees at a Thai restaurant in Majorstuen, my husband and I were reeling from how expensive Oslo is. In Boston, we would have paid somewhere around $25-$30 the amount of food that we got. We decided to look for something a little more affordable and being Vietnamese, I knew that Vietnamese food, no matter where are you are in the world, is always affordable. We found Lille Saigon 1 via Yelp. The restaurant had a very small sign and you would miss it if you weren't looking for it. It shares the same building with what my husband and I guessed to be a strip club. This speaks to the neighborhood that it is in. However, we never felt unsafe walking around the area at night. The restaurant is no frills with some basic tables and chairs. Not much ambiance to speak of, but then again, we didn't come for the ambiance, we came for cheap and delicious food. It was extremely crowded when we showed up at around 7pm. However, we were lucky and got seated immediately. The staff spoke very good English, Vietnamese, and Norwegian. My husband doesn't speak Vietnamese so they served him in English and I was able to order all my food in Vietnamese. The food itself was great! We got the fresh spring rolls and some fried egg rolls for our appetizers. For our entrees, I got a beef pho and my husband got a vermicelli bowl. We also ordered some fresh limeade and a beer. The pho was very flavorful and was a huge comfort after being outside in the cold all day. My husband's vermicelli bowl was full of grilled pork that was seasoned and grilled to perfection. All in all, the food was very good and authentic. When it was time to pay, the bill was equivalent to $55. This was not a terrible deal considering the location and the amount of food and drinks we got. When we find ourselves back in Oslo, we will definitely give this place another visit. read more

We found this place looking at www.yelp.no and even with some bumpy Google translation, we knew we had a winner. Not too hard to find and a short walk from the train station. There was one person on staff who spoke English, which helped us as we had a few questions and I wanted a recommendation for a veggie dish (beef noodles with tofu instead of beef! Beware, the dressing/sauce that comes on the side has fish sauce in it, so skip it and you are meat-free!). The menu has English throughout and all dishes are numbered, so it's easy to order, even if you don't get a waiter who speaks English, you'll be OK. The Vietnamese waiter we had was excited to practice his English, which he learned in school in Norway. The food was great, reasonably priced and large portions. Everything we got was fresh and delicious and everything that went by our table to other patrons looked great, too. As good as any Vietnamese we've had in California...in Norway! If you have a hankering for Asian food while traveling in Scandinavia, Little Saigon 1 is a great choice. It's an especially good deal in Oslo, where most restaurants are pretty darn expensive. We got there at 4:30PM and were seated immediately, but by 5:15 it was packed! read more

I was excited to try the food at Lille Saigon 1 after having fallen head over heels in love with Vietnamese food on a recent holiday trip. Sadly, however, the food at Lille Saigon 1 did not come close to the vibrant flavours and fresh dishes full of crisp vegetables and herbs that seemed to be so abundant in Hanoi and Hoi An. I tried the beef noodle soup, grilled pork with rice noodles, fresh vegetables and peanuts, and the fresh summer rolls with pork and shrimp. Of the three, the soup was the best, as the broth was well made, meaty and very tasty (it did not, however, resemble any Pho soup I had on holiday, but it might of course come from a region of Vietnam where the soups are different to the ones I had). The grilled pork lacked flavour and any real bbq taste, and there was too much noodle and too little herbs and veg in my dish. The summer roll dipping sauce was tasty, but the rolls themselves were somewhat dry and also lacked the balance of flavour that so endears me to Vietnamese cuisine. A disappointment, as I had very much hoped that Lille Saigon 1 could supply me with Vietnamese take away on busy weeknights, but it seems I will have to look elsewhere for my fix. read more

The exterior left us double-guessing as to whether we should enter or not, but once we were inside it was obvious the facade does not do the restaurant justice at all. Great food and polite and effective staff. After eating at several asian restaurants in the area, me and my girlfriend have agreed upon that this one is superior to the rest in terms of taste, presentation and value. I came here on my birthday because I had to eat noodles on my birthday and this was the closest I was gonna get to decent noodles. Found this place on yelp and decided to check it out. Truthfully even though its cheap for Norway, its not cheap compared to other places around the world for the amount and taste. Im giving it four stars because I appreciated them being open till 11 pm because everywhere in norway closes early it seems so this was the only noodle place still open on my birthday so that I could have noodles for good luck and long life. And because there aren't a lot of asians in general in norway so how can you ask there to be good pho. But as for the pho, meh. So-so, I can make better pho. but hey, I'm not viet so technically I may not know what to look for but I've had a lot of pho around the world including vietnam but this is just so-so. Overall, considering this is norway I say the pho is okay because everything in norway is expensive and not a lot of asians so there isn't going to be good asian food, but compared to around the world for the price and taste......it would have been a 3 star in truth. I really want to give this place 5 stars, but it's hard since I've been to basically all the Pho restaurants in NYC. I will say this; this is probably the MOST AUTHENTIC vietnamese restaurant you will find within Oslo. This place is very reasonable (in Norway...dude...) the size is generous and the service is speedy and friendly. *Funny story: they also have ramen here, and my bf and I almost freaked out that they were going to use ramen noodles for Pho. We were wrong, they weren't. The Pho soup base is really good and hearty, and didn't taste too watery or salty. You can taste that it's been simmering in delicious goodness for a bit. The brisket tasted tender, and it felt very familiar and comforting. I know it's Norway, but I wish they had an additional option for tendon and tripe, which would've made this even more authentic. I'm from the states and I can say it's nothing compared to what we eat. Being that it's the only few Vietnamese restaurants in the City I wanted to try it out, it's sad that I can only give them one star for supporting my Vietnamese peeps. But what I don't support is making food with a tremendous amount of MSG and serving that to your customers. Mind you that, ALL food industries use it. But if you're going to overuse it and be okay with serving it to the customers - I'm probably safer, eating a juicy burger down the block than sipping on the hot soups, fish sauce or any other dish they serve here. For the people who don't know what MSG tastes or feels like, your tongue and throat will feel super dehydrated and your thirst for water will make you feel like you just walked out of Death Valley Desert barely alive. At first when you get in you will see the place looks very ordinary. The menu has a ton of dishes, and i mean a ton! The first time i was here that made me wonder about the quality of the food, but every single time I have eaten here since then the food has been very good! Decided to try Oslo's version of Vietnamese food to see how it compared to Vietnam and New York. The differences are interesting due to the availability of ingredients from each location. The pork and crab spring rolls at Lille Saigon 1 have a bubbly crispy skin that is more authentic to what you would find in Vietnam. However, they pair it with iceberg lettuce as a wrapping, instead of the usual Romaine lettuce typical of Vietnam and New York. I must say that I like the iceberg lettuce version more, as it gives you just the right amount of crunch and sweetness in every bite. These were delicious, but I found the dipping sauce to be too sweet. They have various sauces on the table, so I made my own. All of the Phô broths we tried were tasty, but slightly oilier than what we had in Vietnam and New York. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue and it was not as spicy, or as rich in tomato flavor as I typically get it elsewhere. It also usually comes with pig's feet, but the Lille Saigon 1 version only comes with sliced beef. The chicken phô actually comes with fried chicken instead of the typical boiled shredded chicken, or chicken strips. It makes for a tastier bowl of phô, but not as healthy, if that is your aim. The broth in the chicken phô and beef phô were clean-tasting, but still had a depth of flavor, which is what you want in a bowl of phô. We came here looking for a cheap eat on holiday in Oslo. It is cheap - by Oslo standards. A bowl of Pho costs NOK125. The size is decent, the service is quick. The pho was OK. The beef was tasty, but the soup lacked any depth and richness, which is the whole raison d'etre of eating pho. So I left a bit disappointed. This level of Pho would not survive a month in London. Still, I'm guessing Vietnamese is like the bottom of the cheapness ladder in Oslo for dining out, and it was cheaper than other options, so the value for money aspect makes me give this three stars overall. read more

We then had 2 noodle dishes with various meats. They were incredibly bland, neither of us finished them. Lille Saigon is an experience in many ways. This small family business have room for many guests, but it's almost always full in the evenings (so book a table if you don't have time to wait for one). I love the genuine and familiar atmosphere (with some family related pictures on the walls, and obvious family relations among the staff) and the food is great - to really great prices.
