    Coco Crunch Ball (Chokladboll)
    Jocelyn K.

I didn't really want to eat vegan food my first night in Oslo, but trying to be considerate of my travel group's diet preferences, we went here. We actually discovered this place while exploring. They had a little sign advertising their cafe at the beginning of the bridge on Ankerbrua, but it took us a good 15 minutes to find. The cafe is located inside of DOGA (Norwegian Design and Architecture building). If you're coming from Ankerbrua, take the path right before the river leading to Anker Park and turn left immediately at the first building you see. We ordered a Funky Fresh Plate, Big Buck Burger *buckwheat burger), and Smokin Beans Burger (black bean burger). The Funky Fresh Plate came with a bean salad, hummus, greens, quinoa, falafel, a nut ball, a white yogurt sauce, and a balsamic vinegar sauce. The whole plate was really healthy but tasty. My favorite was the nut ball. The plate was pretty large, so I shared with another person. I tried a bite of both burgers. The black bean burger is much tastier than the buckwheat in terms of flavor and texture. I'd go for the black bean one. For dessert we had one of their coco crunch balls, basically a chokladboll. Having just come from Stockholm the day before, I was still on an obsessive hunt to eat these every day. The ones here were delicious and soft. And they are vegan! Much better than the ones you find at the chain coffeehouses. They also sell their coco crunch balls at a nearby organic health foods store. Our waiter was very friendly. We found out he's a fellow American and came from Philly. The cafe itself has a really pleasant and quiet atmosphere with both inside and outside seating. Being in a design and architecture building it gives a simple, yet pleasing to the eye vibe. No large annoying crowds here.

I love unique and timely concepts like this place, the menu is organic, vegan, mostly gluten free and absolutely delicious! Funky Fresh Food is located inside of DogA in the beautiful surroundings of Akerselva. The space has a lot of light, which makes it a great spot to come, hang out, and get inspired by amazing fresh food and a beautiful view. Funky Fresh has a well balanced menu with veggie burgers, self composed salads and daily soup. In addition they have a big drinks menu with juice, milkshakes, hot drinks and organic wine. There is so many delicious things to chose from which makes it very difficult for foodies like myself to pick something. My Tiko Burger made of lentils, served with a mix of sweet potato/potato fries and home made mango chutney was absolutely fantastic! I came in hungry, but I definitely rolled out the door. Super yummy! Can't wait to try out more from their menu!!

It took me a while to accept that I liked something as hipster as a raw vegan brownie. Absolutely recommend!

I think I've liked every single thing I've tried at this place. The dishes are quite filling, creative and tasty. The desserts might seem tiny but they're quite heavy, so they leave you feeling satisfied (although I feel like I could eat a kilo of it anyway). The cacao is quite good (a bit on the too sweet side), the coffee has a fabulous aroma. I'm a super fan of the taco wrap, and the little pesto you get with it is amazing. The soups are creamy and smooth. Definitely try this place if you're looking for new flavors, but it's a bit expensive (nothing crazy).

This was unquestionably the case here at Fragrance of the Heart, which appeared out of the (literal) mist with red lentil dal, exactly at the moment I became fed up with Norwegian food and started craving red lentil dal. It was wonderful, but of course it was. It was singularly what I was searching for. Their namesake bowl wasn't as impressive. They sort of just threw a bunch of stuff into a bowl with no regard for how it might work together. Smoked tofu? Potatoes? Brown guacamole? Beans? Sure. I can say that the ginger lemonade was great and unaided by my cravings, as I didn't know I wanted it until I saw it. It was so gingery as to rival Jamaican ginger juice, which is no joke.

A calm atmosphere where the servers speak softly, people read newspaper instead of Yelping, and serene flute wafts in the background. In this respect, I get why some would adore this cafe. But to be fair, I'm not the right person to rate this establishment fully, as this opinion is strictly about food and less than a holistic view of the cafe. It may be food for the soul, but it's not exactly food for the foodies. Menu includes two kinds of quiches, two soups of the day and an assortment of veggie lasagnas, spinach pies and avocado wraps. The pies don't look that appetizing to be honest, as if it has been premade days ahead and unfrozen. The creamy leek soup was ok actually, if rather unexciting and half a note too tangy. On a good note, their coffee is raved by other reviewers and it does deliver. It is somewhat overpriced for its standards and this holds back its value.

The Masala Dosai was a crepe made from a fermented rice and uridhal (lentil) batter, served with a filling of spiced potatoes and served with dhal (lentil soup), coconut chutney, and sambar (vegetable/lentil soup) on the side. The crepe was perfectly thin and crispy, and each of the accompaniments was perfectly spiced (especially with lots of mustard seeds). I also tried the Kottu Rotti Chicken, a dish made of chopped roti flatbreads stir-fried with shredded chicken, egg, onion, and chilli. The rotis retained a chewy texture, and the meaty chicken and spices turned the boring leftovers into an exciting new dish. Even more memorable than the food, however, was our server, a new immigrant from Nepal, who made us feel right at home and made special accommodations to serve us even close to closing time. This is a great, local, small business worth supporting!
