Chay Viet - My to-go Mi Quang that I decided to enjoy at my apartment.

The reviews were more than positive so I went and sat down and looked at the menu. That's when I noticed it was a vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant. I was fixated on chicken pho and was about to leave, when I thought the best of it and decided to stay and try it out. I ordered the Mi Quang, a spicy soup with mushrooms and tofu, and lo and behold, if it wasn't one of the best soups I've ever tasted! I was so happy that I decided to be adventurous! I was a little less adventurous the rest of the week, as I ordered the same soup three additional times as I couldn't get enough of it! Run - don't walk - to get the Mi Quang!

The wanton soup had fried dumplings instead of boiled which surprised me. The taste was great, but the soup was so oily as a result. You can see the layer of oil circling in the soup. If that's the secret to great taste, then sign me up. For my entree, I had ca bung, an eggplant tofu dish with tumeric and plaintains. Never had anything like this before. Most of the vegetarian vietnamese restaurants in Houston focus on meat analogs so I was pleasantly surprised. It tasted good but the dish played havoc on the digestive system later with the gas. It could have been the oily soup instead but I blame the novel dish with the soybeans.

I read that it is a long wait to get in but I was able to walk right in and sit at the bar. My server was so happy and laughing she made things so comfortable. She put up with my poor Vietnamese language efforts especially since I am better in Tien Viet than in German. I ordered chicken pho and a beer. She laughed so hard when I ordered tiger beer and I'm still wondering why. Possibly because Germany is famous for good beer but I ordered the popular Asian brew. The Hanoi pho came out in seconds not minutes and the broth was amazing. I detected some lemongrass in it. There was not a pile of leaves to add to it as everything it needed to taste good was already there. The interior decoration was very nice and classy. I hope to return.

Our waitress showed us nothing but disdain from the moment we walked in the door. We asked for a minute to have our son decide what he would like to eat, which was received with a huff and rolled eyes. When we asked on of her compatriots for the bill he said he would send her by in a minute. When he asked her to get our bill she glared at him and then glared at us. All in all a mediocre disappointing experience.

With a month in of traveling through Eastern Europe, I was having serious cravings for a classic…read morebowl of pho!! I could wait yet another month more for Vietnamese food. So when I landed in the heart of Berlin (in Mitte), my first stop in Western Europe, I made a B-line without hesitation. The highlight here for me was the raw egg served in a separate bowl with broth. The egg poaches itself in the hot broth. And it's so good!! I haven't had this since I was in Hanoi all the time, and where it's commonplace. The pho bowls (triple beef combo & chicken pho) were just okay. Broth came out piping hot, but also heavy on the MSG. I swear I was drinking water non-stop all night. Also, they really skimp on the noodles. I mean, dry rice noodles are very inexpensive (fresh noodles aren't available here), and most places load up on the noodles. The deep fried breadsticks came out cold and somewhat hardened. We were there for dinner and I'm guessing they were fried much earlier in the day. Disappointing that they weren't even barely warm. Service was friendly, and apparently a popular spot in Mitte. I'm not well versed on pho in Berlin, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come here. There are actually quite a lot of pho spots in Berlin, which I subsequently tried and enjoyed more.

Broth nice clean and clear of grease. Generous amount of noodles. I had the pho tai but I think my meat was a bit too thick and cooked. It didn't taste like the usual thin rare slices. It came with bean sprouts (we had to ask for more; they give little compared to the US), basil, sliced chili peppers, and limes. Perfect. I enjoyed it so much that I didn't even add sriracha. That's when I know it's good. If you can ignore that lit up communist flag, pop in for a very good bowl of pho.
