I can understand the hate that we grew up with for the L Taraval. Dirty, slow, never there…read more.... However, now that the L Taraval has recently returned after a 5-year hiatus from construction woes, I will say that the L Taraval is now very convenient from Parkside to wherever you want to get downtown. Living about a block away from one of its handicapped stops, it is extremely convenient to hop on with my toddler in a stroller, and head on downtown. It runs every 10 mins on weekdays, and 15 on weekends, and actually seems like more often than that. I can contest to that, since I live so close, and can hear it passing all the time. The sound of the L Taraval (and all other Muni trains) is not annoying, but rather very soothing and comforting to hear, even late at night, and early in the morning. The street cars are clean (they didn't always use to be), and from my stop in the Parkside, only takes me 27 mins to get down to Embarcadero Station, which is quite handy for $2.50. In addition, the beautification project is quite pleasurable, with dessert plants, light gravel, newly planted trees, and string lights upon its path. It can be truly charming for those who are open to it. L Taraval - stands for how LOVELY it is!

Sadly, I'm dropping a star for the L. Sometimes I wonder if Muni management is just toying with…read morethose of us in the Parkside/edge of Outer Sunset area. Just when we get used to the latest update to service, it gets changed. I appreciate that it was one of the few lines available at the beginning of Shelter-in-Place even if it switched from a LRV to a bus because I was still going to the office daily. In fact, it was a beautiful ride because of the views of the skyline while twisting down Portola. But while other LRV lines have been switched back, the L is still a bus. Which wasn't so horrible when I could still take it to the Castro/Duboce Triangle area. Then someone at Muni management had the bright idea to make it a glorified shuttle between the zoo and West Portal. So now I have to get off the bus, trudge into West Portal station and switch to an inbound LRV. Which is alright when there's a train waiting. But there are untold number of times when the train takes off just as we go through the fare gate or we have to wait for one. But the "update" that makes me laugh the most is the L Bus Special that started in October. It runs between the zoo and the Embarcadero on weekdays from 10am to 6pm approximately every 50 minutes. Yup. 5-0. Brilliant. I can't utilize it to get to work but maybe to get home? Well, in the 2.5 months it's been running, I've only been able to catch it 5 times. Tonight would've been #6 and the NextBus app said it would be at the stop 5 minutes after I got off work. Perfect since I was carrying bags of gifts home. Except after I rushed 3 blocks to make it to the stop on time, the bus bypassed the stop. Sucks. So I trudged with all my bags down into the station, got on a S shuttle to West Portal, then trudged to catch the L "shuttle". So right now I'm not a huge fan of the L. It's still gets me to work but it has gotten so má fan.

At this point, SFMTA has failed its communities in all aspects. From my experience, I will demonstrate how employees treated me, and the results of my commute. Experience #1: I lost my clipper card, and I asked one of the employees at the information booth how to operate it the app. Many of the workers do not don't know! Others gave me wrong information. Experience #2: I was appalled about how the Transit Fare Inspector treated me. Badge #F65, Eugene Bulkin labled me as difficult for not showing my ID. I was honest, and cooperative in this type of situation. To look superior, he forcefully made me find my ID in my fanny pak after mentioning, losing ID at the bar. He also threatened me to call dispatch. Lastly, he went through my bag by peeking that he saw my ID. Besides, trying to sound superior and attempting to degrade passengers/tourist, the worst part is that he embarrassed me by telling my rides at other transit agencies! Bulkin, becareful who you are talking to with that attitude of yours. You will get the person that will make you learn a lesson.

Church street stop either arrives every 10-15 minutes, back-to-back, or where the hell is it, oh great, it broke down & we have to transfer to a bus. I like that they post arrival times at the boarding areas. Using the BART Trip Planner I found the route there via the N Judah. I wanted to be on the Ocean Beach train. Inside the Powell Street Station, the signage confused me at first. "Outbound or Inbound?" I sheepishly asked the agent for directions. "Which way is it to the Ocean?" The agent snickered, "There's two oceans. Where do you want to go?" Fine, Outbound. Actually it didn't matter. At the platform I saw the Ocean Beach or Ball Park directions. Got it! Easy to pay the fare using my Clipper Card and I was going in the right direction. A two train car stopped and I'm on my way. I knew to get off at Irving St and 9th. The signage once again confused me. Judah and 9th is the stop listed. On this particular train, I couldn't here the operator announce the stops. Good thing I know a bit about The City and got off at the right stop. My destination was 1/2 mile away so I walked. The ride didn't take very long and it was a fun ride a glimpse of local folks and flavor. The return ride was uneventful and I proudly felt new confidence. I love public transportation and the N Judah works for me!

It's no surprise to see traffic when traveling on Fell / Oak Streets. This is an excellent route. Also, an answer to that better commute. I wanted to go Sheng Kee Bakery on Irving St and 21st Ave. But I didn't want to get on a route that makes every stop along the way. Route 7x Noriega Express became my answer. This route got me straight to 23rd Ave and Lincoln Way from Fell St and Gough St in 20 minutes. With traffic, roughly 25 minutes - 30 minutes. I like how they have 40' and 60' buses in service on this route. It truly is an excellent way to alleviate crowding. It would be really nice to have midday and weekend service on this route. Or at least, a similar route gets placed in to service using the same path this route uses when it's not in service.

I hopped on the 7X on Friday, July 6th a little after 5:30pm. I've taken the regular 7 before and this bus is so much better. It skips the entire Haight part and goes straight down Fell which is a lot faster. (It doesn't stop at all between Gough & 9th Avenue.) For $2.75, I got from Market & Grant to Lincoln & 19th Avenue in 15 stops and about 35 mins. After that, it was an easy transfer to the 28. My original intention was to take the 5R - Fulton to the 28, so I'm glad the 7X stopped by first as it ended up being so much faster.

You can take it clockwise (gray route) or counterclockwise (red route). The shuttle is clean and spacious and has free wifi; when I rode it on a Saturday, it was pretty empty. You can even track it live via a website or phone app (I haven't tried the app), which makes catching the shuttle a breeze. I did notice both times I rode the shuttle that there was an incident of someone shouting at the driver to stop because they needed to get off, but it was hard to tell whether the driver had missed their stop request or they had tried to get off somewhere that wasn't a stop.

I am not from Mountain View but this cute little shuttle does great magic for people who are native to the area. People of all ages ride this. There was one time where it can be full of young people who want to save gas on getting around their city of residence. Other times it's a mix of people from age 4 to 85 that want to go to the doctors, San Antonio Shopping Center or a random Starbucks. On Saturdays it can go near Shoreline so if you are biking near the VTA bus yard this bus can be your resting area thanks to their bike racks. I live in a low-income area of San Jose and are really jealous that nothing like this exists near where I live. I wish it did so I could save money on gas. Note: We are still in a pandemic so please wear a mask. Staff here wear masks and seating is limited so continue to social distance.
