It's only slightly further out from the theme park than other hotels and infinitely worth the price reduction. The fancy old school neon sign out front is a helpful waypoint when you're coming back after dark (no missing your turn!). This isn't a chain location; it's independently owned and operated by a swell fella named Steve. Steve was very friendly and happy to have us for three nights. Each morning we were able to go over to the "office" (the back of his home) and snag free coffee, donuts, fruit, and granola bars (no COVID excuses!). He said hi to us or waved whenever he saw us enter or leave the property. And what a gorgeous piece of property it is! We both really enjoyed the more "homey" feel to this over the traditional parking lot + multifloor hotel. The rooms are small and honestly reminded me of my grandma's old house, which is probably accurate because this place was probably built around the 1950's. You can see it in the tile bathrooms and fixtures. That said, it is on the older side so there are some imperfections here and there if you look close. Some rusty grout, some warped wood, that kind of thing. Sure, it'd be nice if some renovations were done. But again, we spent the majority of our time riding roller coasters, not relaxing in our room so we really weren't seeking a "resort" experience. It all depends on what you're looking for in a stay. There is a pool which we unfortunately never got the time to utilize, but it looked really nice and the hours are generous. The ice machine worked really well so we were never without cold water to drink. The only thing that was missing that would've been really nice to have was a mini fridge/microwave so we could have some meals without going out. Each room also comes with a fold-out little bed so you can sleep an additional person or child. I actually ended up using it because it was softer than the full-sized bed. Steve was generous in supplying additional soap bars/shampoo during our multi day stay. The TV worked well and had all the standard channels. The wi-fi worked great for all my needs! A/C was functional and not too loud. Do note that this place is right next to the railroad tracks and trains will go by throughout the day/evening. We noticed the busiest time seemed to be 7am. The trains always blow their whistle while going by and it is quite loud.

However, when a business is open for 100 years, you have to give it a shot! First, I highly recommend that the owners hire a social media manager and post pictures that do this place justice. The grounds are super cute and the sign offers a great photo op! Walking into the room brought an enormous rush of nostalgia. It was cool to be able to stay in a place that my grandparents would have stopped at in their younger years. Most importantly, the rooms and bathrooms were super clean!! The room comes with a modern television and a small refrigerator. The property owners are very personable and, as part of your room fee, they provide freshly made local donuts each morning. The donuts are worth the stay alone. In this day and age, we were surprised to be able to find such a cool Experience for such little cost. Easy parking, beautiful pool (we didn't use it but it looked nice), amazing customer service. Without hesitation, we will stay here whenever we are back in town. Maples Motel is a historic treasure and I highly recommend staying here.

However if you are a business traveler or someone who is looking for peace and quiet, consider other inns as this one is located off a busy street that is heavily patrolled by cops. Additionally, wifi access is limited to non existent. But the breakfast is delish and rooms are clean. It's reasonably priced as well.

We slept on the ground in sleeping bags. There were a lot of people making noise until about 12:30am, playing music, singing, talking and yelling. The showers were not great but fine for a campground. I went to bed around 2am when everything had died down. Around 7am, some banging started like there might be a shooting range nearby. In the morning, I explored the camping area and got some exercise. So much better than a hotel gym! I ran around, shot some hoops, and bounced on their "jumping pillow" which was exactly what I needed before a day of driving. And it was so much cheaper than a hotel room.

The experience is one that I've come to cherish. However, there are several drawbacks I would 100% recommend renting a cottage instead of staying at Hotel Lakeside (which is the reason for such the mediocre review). The rooms, while quaint, were very dirty in the corners and I wouldn't recommend looking under the bed unless you're a dust bunny aficionado. We were told that we were going to get a kitchenette which we did not receive (and apparently there isn't one in the entire hotel). My room was nice enough (besides for the dust), but my grandparents' room's air conditioning was not working and the room had a musty odor. Thankfully they were able to get the bridal suite on the second floor but even then, the bathroom was so small we were worried they would fall and hurt themselves. In terms of food, you don't really have many options. Besides for the hotel's restaurant, there are some coffee shops that aren't open for dinner, sloopy's and the New Mexican restaurant. The hotel's food is delicious but because there are only a few items on the menu, they can get old rather quickly. Sloopy's is nice for a few meals but eating that much unhealthy food will not make your stomach very happy. This is the other reason I recommend getting a cottage. Just so you could make your own home cooked meals instead of relying on eating out. Lastly, the porch. This is the most redeeming quality to the hotel. Looking out over the lake in the covered porch with everyone quietly reading or on their phones is incredibly peaceful and rejuvenating. In the end, I would recommend coming to Lakeside 100%. However, stay at the hotel at your own risk and definitely not for more than four days.

The decor is so interesting and tasteful, perfect for the area. The kitchen was equipped with full size refrigerator, microwave, toaster, stove/oven and all the other items you could need. We had two children with us, so it was great to have a fully stocked kitchen. Bonus - they have a winery on the property, Rocky Point Winery. It was so fun and convenient to be able to go downstairs and order a glass of wine (beer/mixed drink), enjoy a tasty snack and sit at the lovely patio and garden areas. It has a nice selection of gifts to purchase at the winery as well. As I mentioned, the owner and staff were so accommodating and responsive. I highly recommend the Red Fern Inn for your next stay up at the "islands".

We called ahead a few days and asked about the pool and then made reservations to stop on our way back from Lake Leelanau, MI. We let them know we would be arriving late and were told it wouldn't be a problem. When we arrived we had to knock on the door of the house for several minutes until a lady in her nightgown (it was still daylight out) answered. She checked us in, took my payment, gave us our gate key and we went to our spot. This is more of a trailer park than a campground, there are more large seasonal trailers here than campers. Spots are no frills, ours was pretty much a small yard big enough to park the truck and camper with water. No shade, no nothing. We could live with it due to the pools. However, when we got the kids in their swimsuits and went over to the pools...they were all closed. I found that this was deceptive since when we placed the reservation we told the lady on the phone we were choosing them because of their heated pool for the kids. She took our reservation fee and never bothered to tell us the pool closed shortly after Labor Day. She knew that it would be closed when we got there but didn't bother telling us. I went to the office to complain and was met with indifference. I went and packed up my camper and kids and on my way out demanded my money back which they refused. Great customer service eh? In the end I got my money back because I called my credit card company and issued a chargeback. I hope they got a fee for it on top the chargeback for wasting my time and gas. You're better off staying at East Harbor State Park Campground which is nearby. Even though the sites are primitive, there's a ton of things for kids to do and it has beautiful beaches that don't close down and staff that will take care of you.

I was skeptical because the photos really didn't do this place justice. However - after a couple of phone calls and a couple of FB messenger exchanges, I really felt the warmth and hospitality that this place offered. They answered all of my rookie questions and told us we would really enjoy it. We ended up in one of the wood cabins and proceeded to call our adventure "glamping" because there was a full bed, 2 bunk beds, a dining table w/2 chairs, ceiling fan/light, air conditioning unit, a microwave and college dorm size fridge and outside a fire pit, a charcoal grill (like the ones you see at national parks) and a picnic table. The folks at the front desk were very friendly and so accommodating that they "escorted" us to our camp site.... literally across the driveway and 25 steps away (lol). There were a few other campers and lots of parked RVs towards the back of the camp ground. We were near the dog run so we saw lots of cute pets and nice pet owners. We even met another camping family who offered and gave us a couple starter logs so we didn't have to buy the bucket of wood for the couple of days we were there. Such a nice community! The pool was our fav spot as it was clean, low key with lots of bright and colorful big sun umbrellas and ice cream and hamburger and hot dogs if you wanted to purchase them. The second day we were up early and the staff was kind enough to let us in the pool before it technically open. We had a little burn incident with tiny hands on a hot marshmallow stick and they gave us a first aid ice pack even though we were ready to buy a bag of ice. The only reason I didn't give them a full 5 stars was because the full bed was not very comfortable and bathrooms looked like it could use an update (comparing bathrooms to a previous experience with Cub Scouts @Bert Adams). The beds are a foam type which for the full size bed it was very thick and became too soft over time. The bunk beds were a thinner type foam mattress and it was just fine. Overall the cabin was very clean - no surprise critter visitors. A couple of tips - opt for the gate card ($10 refundable deposit) - it's well worth not calling every time you return to the site. If it's a short stay, go to Walmart (5 min away) and get the fire starter log. On local experiences - Put In Bay is fun - go for the Perry's Cave, we were told by locals. Cedarlane sells the mining bags - probably save a few dollars buying it here and have it in the car with you. If you want to do the African safari adventure, go to Groupon to get your tickets.... it's fun like a drive through petting zoo but nothing extravagant so get coupons or discounted tickets.
