When looking for a place to stay while we visited Cedar Point, there were a lot of expensive places that didn't fit our budget. Thankfully we found the Maples! It's only slightly further out from the theme park than other hotels and infinitely worth the price reduction. The fancy old school neon sign out front is a helpful waypoint when you're coming back after dark (no missing your turn!). This isn't a chain location; it's independently owned and operated by a swell fella named Steve. Steve was very friendly and happy to have us for three nights. Each morning we were able to go over to the "office" (the back of his home) and snag free coffee, donuts, fruit, and granola bars (no COVID excuses!). He said hi to us or waved whenever he saw us enter or leave the property. And what a gorgeous piece of property it is! We both really enjoyed the more "homey" feel to this over the traditional parking lot + multifloor hotel. The rooms are small and honestly reminded me of my grandma's old house, which is probably accurate because this place was probably built around the 1950's. You can see it in the tile bathrooms and fixtures. That said, it is on the older side so there are some imperfections here and there if you look close. Some rusty grout, some warped wood, that kind of thing. Sure, it'd be nice if some renovations were done. But again, we spent the majority of our time riding roller coasters, not relaxing in our room so we really weren't seeking a "resort" experience. It all depends on what you're looking for in a stay. There is a pool which we unfortunately never got the time to utilize, but it looked really nice and the hours are generous. The ice machine worked really well so we were never without cold water to drink. The only thing that was missing that would've been really nice to have was a mini fridge/microwave so we could have some meals without going out. Each room also comes with a fold-out little bed so you can sleep an additional person or child. I actually ended up using it because it was softer than the full-sized bed. Steve was generous in supplying additional soap bars/shampoo during our multi day stay. The TV worked well and had all the standard channels. The wi-fi worked great for all my needs! A/C was functional and not too loud. Do note that this place is right next to the railroad tracks and trains will go by throughout the day/evening. We noticed the busiest time seemed to be 7am. The trains always blow their whistle while going by and it is quite loud. read more

This place is a VIBE and has a family business for 100 years! Not going to lie, the photos almost threw me off and we almost didn't stay here. However, when a business is open for 100 years, you have to give it a shot! First, I highly recommend that the owners hire a social media manager and post pictures that do this place justice. The grounds are super cute and the sign offers a great photo op! Walking into the room brought an enormous rush of nostalgia. It was cool to be able to stay in a place that my grandparents would have stopped at in their younger years. Most importantly, the rooms and bathrooms were super clean!! The room comes with a modern television and a small refrigerator. The property owners are very personable and, as part of your room fee, they provide freshly made local donuts each morning. The donuts are worth the stay alone. In this day and age, we were surprised to be able to find such a cool Experience for such little cost. Easy parking, beautiful pool (we didn't use it but it looked nice), amazing customer service. Without hesitation, we will stay here whenever we are back in town. One of the cabins at the Maples Motel turned out to be an excellent place to spend a couple of nights for my family of four. Despite not having an air conditioner we were comfortable with the cross breeze of multiple windows and the screen door assisted by a box fan. The beds were comfortable for a range of people (different weights and shapes), though I'm glad we travel with extra pillows as theirs were firm and somewhat flat. There were no signs of bed bugs. We enjoyed the large bathroom and shower, shaded lawn, and friendly owner, though we didn't check out the pool. It is near a large park with swampy areas so wear mosquito repellant if you'll be outside much in the evening. The Maples beings back fond memories of the bungalow colony my great grandfather build around 1900 in Central New York. The buildings look similar, and both always felt well cared for and well loved. While checking out I met a woman who has been vacationing at that property for thirty years. Be aware, though, that what you are getting isn't shiny, new, fancy, or in the case of the for cottages air conditioned. Also the freight train line runs across the street and the trains carefully sound their horn at every crossing. After the first few times I began to acclimate, but I enjoy train sounds. After that they were louder than I prefer, yet my whole family was able to sleep through the night time runs with little difficulty and it got easier and easier. read more

#RETROBABY Maples Motel is authentically retro, and very much family owned; it's been in their family, in one form or another, for at least three generations. Location: Almost perfect. As if the grounds of the motel are not park-like enough, there's a nature preserve and a metropark within walking distance. Also, it's a stone's throw from the back entrance to Cedar Point. (In case you didn't know, Cedar Point does have a lesser known, and much less busy, back entrance). The only POSSIBLE trouble with the location is the proximity to some train tracks. This doesn't bother me or my family; we sleep like logs. But if you're a light sleeper, you may have a problem. Pool: Clean, warm and nicely maintained. Plenty of lounge chairs. Rooms: Clean and comfy. A bit run down, but nothing major. (There was some loose wood paneling in our room (Not falling-off-the-wall loose, but loose). The TV/cable was fine, the mini-fridge was fine, and the sink/toilet/shower were just fine). The two queen size beds were soft. There was a bit of that "old motel" scent, so maybe you might want to open the windows or bring some air freshener. Free breakfast: The owners provide coffee and donuts, as well as granola bars and fresh fruit, in the office, from 6am until it's gone. I'd give MM five stars, because it's perfect for me, but if I did that, most people would think I was crazy; there are some minor (IMO) issues. However, if you're not too hoity-toity, Maples Motel rates a solid four stars. read more

Owner is a character and that's about the only thing positive I can say. Picked this Motel for the nostalgia but was very disappointed. Not a queen bed, it was a full and old hard mattress. Tiles falling off bathroom and shower walls. Musty and likely moldy. Ancient windom AC unit. Tube TV. Cieliling was in bad shpe. Motel is adjacent to a very busy and loud, railroad crossing where the crossing bells go off all night long. Pictures and reviews make it seem like reto basic motel, it's not. Would not recommend to anyone. After one night, I'm looking for a different place. read more

Yes it's nostalgic and hearing the family history is cool. The rooms on the other hand are horrible. Cleaning is minimal. Mold and mildew on cracked tile, on the walls under peeling wallpaper, molded floors from leaking water. Screens do not fit the windows so expect bees and insects to visit you. Bedding is a joke. Stained pillows and mattresses. Mattresses are old and sunken in. The rooms smell moldy and musty. If you are ok with gross, you'll be fine. The location is great for Cedar Point and nearby eateries. read more

Wow. What can I really say positive? This could be a quaint little place but it is in dire need of minor updates. First let's start with replacing or doing away with the carpet that looks like it has been there since the 70's. Next just how old are those badly stained box springs and mattresses? The sheets might have been white 10 years ago so let's toss them and get new. Now let's give the walls a fresh paint job. That might help eliminate the stale cigarette smell in the rooms. Next we need new locks on the doors. Mine barely locked so I put a chair in front if it just to feel a little safer. What can I say I am a city girl where we lock our doors out of habit. I had a nice flat screen TV but my grandson had an old tube TV that barely worked. Speaking of barely working, those small a/c units are just old and barely able to cool a room off. I had a working fridge but again my grandson's never got cooler then warm. It was useless. I don't know who built the showers but even for my standing at 5'2" the shower head was to low. We ended up nick naming this place the Bates Motel. We did enjoy the pool after a day at Cedar Point. This location is perfect if you are going to Cedar Point but bad because it sits along a set of rail road tracks with trains running every 30 to 45 minutes. Steve is very very friendly and he is trying to hard to make this place survive. He pretty much is the do it all man. That's a pretty big load for one person. I really think if he just took the time for minor updates one room at a time this place would be booked solid all summer long. It has a quaintness about it. It doesn't need to be Holiday Inn but it does need to be updated.. Sorry Steve. Your a really nice guy but your hotel needs some hotel impossible help. Think how much more you could charge if you add a little charm to the inside of those rooms. My grandson asked me today if I would ever stay there again. The nostalgia of the motel and Steve's friendliness outweigh the worn, musty smelling (but otherwise very clean) rooms. We happened to arrive when it was pouring down rain and there was rain water running down the paneling underneath the air conditioner. This hotel definitely needs some renovation, but please keep the 1950's look and feel. Lots of potential here - great location, quaint setting. Gotta love TRAINS to stay here (or else be deaf), because there's a train crossing right outside. Luckily I'm a hard sleeper, and don't live too far from a track myself, so the frequent whistles, bells, and chugga-chugga at all hours were no big bother to me. This place is totally retro and authentic. The room was a little mildew scented, but I was there the first weekend after the off-season close-down, so, since it looked clean, it probably just needed to air out. The owner couldn't have been nicer. She helped me with some unfortunate car issues as much as she could, and even gave me a chocolate bar when she saw I was having a bad day. The pool is nice, and they have brand new lounge chairs around it. They have a better-than-many cable selection, and a safe feeling location only a few minutes from the causeway to Cedar Point. (The "back way" is only about 2 minutes away, but easy to miss. It's a slower drive up to the park, but a nice ride, and you're less likely to get stuck in a parking line, once you get there.) It's a sweet little, old fashioned motel. I'll take this over the Roadway Inn at the same price ANY day! read more

With a good price, nice management, and a pretty if not loud setting, the Maples is a great deal. As others have said, you have to be really tolerant of the trains because they are right across the street and they are loud. Having grown up and lived near trains all my life, it was not a problem. My room was clean and had a small table with two chairs, queen size bed, mini fridge, a TV and a small bathroom. They took care of me and checked in on me and recommended places to eat if I wanted. I enjoyed walking around the grounds (out back there is a farm) and I spent a whole evening enjoying some porch beers outside my room. This is a classic, charming, but not amenity-laden place to stay. What you see is what you get and it was worth every penny. read more

This motel was advertised as a motel... when in reality it was a very low quality cabin. The mattresses were all rock hard and the carpet looked like it had never been cleaned since the opening of this motel.. which must have been a long time ago since there sign says we have color tv. I also posted a video illustration to demonstrate why spending 80$ on a decrepit "motel" room will not be worth it. Also when my brother kindly explained to the owner that they should advertise it as it is.. a cabin with no air conditioning or heating so that others will know when booking there room, and he just dismissed him saying that people should know by the price!!???? There is also a train that goes by every thirty minutes, shaking the ground making it impossible to sleep for more than thirty minutes at a time before being rudely awakened yet again. I recommend sleeping in your car over paying for that crap hole. I also think it is important to mention that I am an employee of the Hilton Hotels and I am no stranger to the importance of being honest to your guests about the experience you promise them. The owner of this motel will do whatever it takes to continue benefiting off of his guests while deceiving them about the experience they will soon discover is nothing as described on the website. The Maples Motel is right outside the back entrance to Cedar Point. Affordable rooms. Family owned. Joan and Steve - mother and son run the small motel. It's not fancy but it is cheap and relatively clean. They have a pool too. We used to stay at the Breakers but we changed to the Maples several years ago. I doubt the Breakers misses us but if we didn't come to the Maples Joan and Steve definitely would. There is something comforting about that. The trains right across the street took some getting used to but now we barely notice them. We love it here. read more

Wanting a little getaway and not wanting to stay in a huge place or something super expensive, I found Maples on the internet. Being a lover of vintage and retro it looked good to me. After calling and booking a room (and I loved the young lady who took my call; helpful and friendly and that's a huge plus in my book) a friend of mine called who lives nearby. She offered me to stay in their upscale place but I turned her down. She then said I might like to stay at the Maples Motel! Upon my arrival I told the owner's son and cousin (Steve and Scott) of my friend's recommendation and they brought mom out to meet me. I was charmed and bought a t shirt for me and one to send my friend who lives on Maui. I used to spend time in the nearby area in the 60's so we chatted about where to eat and how things have changed or not changed. My room was small (ok with me). Didn't need the A/C and yes, the trains are very close and run often but I found that quite alright. I guess if you are a light sleeper you might have issues. I would love to see them decorate in more vintage/retro and there are some small repairs that could be done but would I go back again? Yes! Would I recommend? Yes! read more

A wonderful little place to stay. It's off the beaten path, yet close to all the attractions downtown. It's owned by a great family. The service can't be beat! If you want the ritz and lots of amenities, this isn't the place for you. If you want great hospitality, a clean and comfy place to lay your head, and to save some cash- this is the motel you want to stay at! Pros: Best service I've ever had at a hotel, hands down. The room was clean and smelled good. The doors to the rooms are outside doors, and parking is right in front of your room. There's cable TV and a mini fridge. There's an ice machine and pop machine at the end of the building. They actually bring fresh towels everyday (many women who have traveled a lot know exactly what I'm talking about, haha). Fresh coffee, donuts, and fruit are in the office every morning (free). There's also a small pool (which we didn't use being that it was October when we went). Many places deliver to the motel- a good variety- and almost all had great food and service. Cons: There was no coffee pot or microwave in our room- which we can live without. There was no tub, though I don't know if there are other rooms that have ones or not. Quite honestly it was my own fault for not asking as I was simply not thinking about that. The motel is right across the street from a train track. Trains run fairly regularly, but they go by very quickly and honestly didn't bother us one bit. All and all this was a nice place to relax after running around the town. Yeah, so the decor is dated, who cares? It's a great stop off the beaten path with warm and caring service and a CLEAN room. It was nice and quiet when the trains didn't run and we found it incredibly relaxing to open the windows and door up to the breeze and gaze at the lovely trees. My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon, and we'll happily return if we make it back out to Sandusky. read more

Having arrived in Sandusky with no reservation, the first couple places we checked were booked up. Not wanting to pay $150+, we somehow came across info for the Maples Motel. I could see the retro/kitchy appeal. After seeming to inconvenience the surly front-desk guy, we asked if it would be possible to take a look at a room. I'm glad we looked before checking in. Man, the place is depressing; dark and dingy. We were almost resigned to stay there, thinking it might be our only option, when Mr. Friendly front-desk-guy said we were taking "way too long" to decide. Well, that made our decision easy. We drove just a little up the road and found three other much nicer places to choose from for only $5-10 more. Location, location, location .... was great - barring the train noise. We did not get much sleep because of trains and uncomfortable mattress. Our a/c unit worked fine. Pool was a nice. Great family running the place and nice for traveling w/ a dog because of the setting among the potato (?) fields. WARNING, NOT AS ADVERTISED. I booked the family junior suite through booking.com. It is currently falsely advertised as a motel with 3 full beds, a fridge, and says nothing about having NO A/C. The regular motel rooms have 2 beds and these amenities. The family rooms DO NOT. They are run down, dirty cabins. The room had a twin bed (that was rock hard and less comfortable than the floor), and two full beds (he claimed were brand new but very old and uncomfortable). The bathroom was rusty, moldy and dirty. The shower handles were broken and moldy inside. TRAINS RUN EVERY 30 min, and it is next to a crossing so it honks. This would be less annoying if we didn't have to have all the windows open due to having NO A/C, and he did not provide ear plugs in the room. This is advertised as having a flat screen tv, it is not, it's a tube TV. When I addressed this with the owner he blamed it on booking.com for false advertisement (THAT IS HIS FAULT) and saying that we should have expected to "have this experience" with the price we paid. DO NOT STAY HERE, there are motels just as cheap closer to Cedar Points main entrance that are much better quality. read more

I loved this motel. It is unlike other motels in the area in that currently it is surrounded by all fields, which I got to take a walk in at night and enjoy the moon. Furthermore, it is right by some train tracks and I am a train lover, so that noise didn't bother me at all. The motel has a dedicated customer base, as I learned all about the history of the hotel from some other clients and the owner Steve. I would totally stay here again if I came back to Cedar Point which since I have a child, I totally just might and for me the motel itself is almost a destination point. My minus one star is that the price quoted to me late at night on the phone, which was clear in my mind b/c I had been calling around, was not the price I paid. I had no receipt as the machine had run out of paper and was tired from driving, and thought what seemed like a somewhat more than I thought I was going to pay was part of the heavy tax hotels often are subjected to. I wrote Steve after seeing my receipt online, who said he would credit me the difference, but he never did and ignored my follow up emails on the topic. It wasn't highway robbery, (20$ difference) but I am a frugal one and the type that reads her receipts after getting groceries to make sure I got all my sale prices, so if I weigh the fact that the owner's follow through on his promise didn't happen and how much I actually loved the hotel, I figured I would just drop the whole thing which is why it has taken me so long to finish the review. Stay here if you want a nostalgic experience that is just outside of the closer to Cedar Point but more strip highway motel and expensive hotel experience, but get your receipt. =) read more

Down the road from the nursing home my grandfather is staying at, so very convenient and good rates. Mosquitoes in my room from the open bathroom hatch when we arrived. There were pretzels under the bed in room 22. But.. overall, and excellent motel. Whatever the motel lacked was more than made up in service and hospitality. Ps. The donuts are A+. read more

We stayed here one night while visiting Cedar Point. The place is like stepping back in time. The room, pool, and grounds are clean and well kept. It is a family owned and operated business with the family living on the grounds. They were extremely nice people. We had read about the trains and were prepared...... They are loud folks, but strangely enough only one woke us in the night. We will stay again if we are in the area...... We loved it so much we ordered t-shirts to be mailed back to us. Completely agree with Erin B.'s review. The motel is a throwback but in a genuine and good way. I was there for 8 nights, I did a lot of research before coming into town. Do you know how hard it is to find a place without BUGS in the review?? This place? No bugs, clean rooms! And everything else beyond that is a bonus for me. And not just donuts for breakfast, friggin delicious donuts. Open fields behind the property are really nice. It is true, you will be trainspotting here. With a good arm you could almost hit it with a tennis ball. But you get used to it real fast, just kind of pause your conversation for a moment and that's that. Great location and here's another plus - safe. I was there for a fishing tournament and I had no concerns whatsoever about my equipment. The motel is exactly what it claims to be, it's not a gimmick, and I felt it was a terrific experience and when you consider the price it's also a bargain. Management matters. Spoke with the very friendly owner every day, even gave me a couple brats and beers! I couldn't have been happier with the relationship - yes, relationship - with the owner. I was there when Dan C. came in looking for a room, I saw the interaction and frankly it wasn't hard to figure out what was being said. All i can say is we all have bad days every now and then, and if the owner was as surly as he claims, i think all the awards on the office walls would attest to it having just been a regrettable anomaly. Admittedly the Wi-fi is a bit challenged, brick building doesn't allow much to come through, have to be outside for a good signal. A repeater/extender would be a good investment by the motel. I didn't use the pool. But the kids that did were having a blast. I did a lot o research before I made my trip and Maples wasn't my last resort, it was my first choice and it will be again every time I come back to the area. read more

I am pretty sure this is the motel I stayed at then I went to cedar point. Even though a lot of you think that this motel is awesome, but it was not when I stayed there. I'll start with when we entered the motel. I walk in and there is a broken lamp on the table.. Really? Really people? Are you kidding me? It gets worse. I knew that since I was staying with more than 2 people, I called for a roll-away bed. Not only were there hairs on it, but there was a freaking booger. I almost puked because it was so gross. The bathroom was crusty and there was a USED tissue behind the dresser. That is absolutely disgusting. Anyways, we all had to share one bed and guess what? There were hairs on it! It was so gross. I would've rather slept outside. Finally, when we went to go get the breakfast they were serving, I almost threw up again because I bit into a stale doughnut. read more

It is NOT fancy at all, but has so much character and appeal that we once cancelled our plans to visit Cedar Point when we learned that the Maples Motel wasn't available for our stay. If you need luxury - look elsewhere, but if you want an affordable, quaint place to lay your head for the night - this is the place! One of Ohio's best kept secrets - that's the Maples Motel, and if you want a genuine retro experience (not like one of those fake and tacky "imitation 50s" places, but the real deal), then this is the place to go. We are so lucky to have this here. I think it deserves some kind of award for being one of the country's best and most iconic roadside motels. If you live in Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, or somewhere not too far away it makes a wonderful weekend getaway for the retro minded. And if you're from far away, this is definitely a place worth seeking out. Great pool, cool signs, Hollywood-worthy neon, family run and clean - it's just a down home old fashioned place full of charm. I love the retro details like the metal chairs in the rooms, the vintage bath fixtures, the cool light fixtures that are 60 or 75 years old. It's surrounded by farm fields and there's a train that blows its whistle just across the street, and all that adds to the feeling that you've just gone in some kind of time warp. If this place were in Palm Springs it would be $250 a night and crowded with too many ironic hipsters. Thank goodness it isn't. Here in Ohio it's just part of our history and local color. Was happy to see it re-opened; but was solely disappointed after staying there. The website did not mention that there was no air conditioning, which I don't mind but I would like it to have mentioned no air conditioning so I could have made sure others in my party were aware and also would have more than likely stayed elsewhere for the same price or less that I actually had air-conditioning. Air conditioning was the least of the problem though; The website also said the room had three full-size beds - but in fact it was two full-size and one twin bed which caused major issues since there were six of us coming and no couch or room left for the Sixth person to sleep on the floor; because the room itself was much too small for two full-size and one twin bed. Also advertise cable and TV, But you can guess it TV did not work nor the cable. The room was disgusting, we lifted the beds and moved some of the furniture; which looked like it had been got at a yard sale; And there was a layer of dust debris and trash under them. The bathroom had mold and rust stains in the sink and around the edges of the cracked broken grout/tile. The owner of the hotel was very friendly and somewhat apologetic, but needs to realize in order to operate a business you must advertise correctly and clean thoroughly. Also make sure that sinks and bathrooms are fully remodeled and cleaned so that people don't feel like they are paving at their summer day camp. And when you advertise rooms the sleep sacks, there's actually room and actually enough beds for those six people. Also - when we complained about the mattress we were told it was brand-newon all three beds; but after examination of tax realized this was not the case they were much older or they may have been bought secondhand not sure. read more
