Unfortunately, that was not our experience at the Inn at Cannon Beach. My husband checked us in around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 16. We had booked a four-night stay. Although there were no other guests waiting and three employees were behind the front desk, he was greeted with a curt, "How can I help you?" There was no hello, welcome, or smile. The check-in process felt cold and robotic, with none of the warmth we had experienced at every other property on our trip. After settling into our room, we returned a few minutes later to request the complimentary pass to the local gym. A different employee provided the information with little enthusiasm. She mentioned the gym was about a mile away. When I asked whether it was walkable, she replied, "I can do it." I wasn't asking whether someone could walk it--I wanted to know whether it was practical and safe for visitors unfamiliar with the area. We decided to explore on foot. The route followed a busy road with no sidewalks, something that would have been helpful to mention. We also encountered several large elk roaming near the road and decided it was wiser to turn back. My husband asked to speak with a manager and was directed to the front desk supervisor, who was the same employee who had given us the gym information. He explained that, based on our check-in and subsequent interactions, we did not feel welcome and would prefer to leave if we could receive a full refund. She responded with a perfunctory, "I'm sorry you feel that way," agreed to refund our stay, and that was the end of the conversation. There was no attempt to understand our concerns or ask whether anything could be done to improve our experience. We were disappointed that our first impression of Cannon Beach came from a hotel where we felt like an inconvenience rather than valued guests. For a nightly rate of $500+, we hoped for better service. Although we had to scramble to find accommodations during the busy summer season, we ultimately found another hotel where the hospitality matched everything we had come to appreciate throughout Oregon.

On the main drag of S Hemlock, a short walk to a grocery store, Tolovana State Recreation Area, and the beach, as well as a few restaurants. The compound is a series of buildings with rooms that you enter from the outside. We were upstairs with our balcony overlooking the garden, which was nice. The day we checked in, the woman at the front desk was helpful, but for me, with a hearing deficit, she talked fast and I relied on my wife to interpret for me. No big deal, though. They offer cookies individually wrapped, which is a nice touch. In the lobby are tea and coffee. Our room had double queen beds, was clean, and had all the amenities: mini fridge, microwave, and hairdryer. Strangely, we found that our heater was on, and we had to investigate how to turn it off. There is no A/C, at least not that we saw. However, it does not seem to get hot there, so with the window open, not an issue. The bathroom had a small tub/shower but nice fan and great water pressure. The TV worked fine. The first morning, we checked out the complimentary breakfast. You have to walk across Surfcrest St into another compound called Lodges at Cannon Beach and back in the corner is the breakfast room (there is a sign that leads the way). However, we were not impressed. Except for the sausage, biscuits, muffins, and juice, we were not impressed. There were no scrambled eggs that morning, just hard boiled. I'm not a fan of biscuits and gravy. They don't have a waffle maker, so the waffles had been sitting out and, for us, not edible. Ultimately, we skipped the breakfast the next two mornings. Housekeeping did a great job of cleaning and tidying up our room each day. We appreciated that. Besides the unimpressive breakfast, I only had one other issue. About dusk the frogs start up in the pond at the center of the garden area where most rooms overlook. They are continuous and loud, so that we had to close the window to be able to sleep. There is a fan in the room, but we like fresh air and were unable to enjoy it. Overall, we were happy with the Inn At Cannon Beach.

Balcony has great views of Haystack and of the sunsets. Room was great with size and super clean! Location is just south of the main shops, but there's still restaurants, coffee, and a store around. They love pups and had a package ready for her. Plus they have a small outdoor dog bath next to the sand, which is so clutch for post beach zoomies! Also love the pool, electric car chargers, and Apple TVs in room!! Overall great experience and will keep coming back

Lucky enough I found Stephanie's and they had a few seats available. What I didn't know that it was a multi-course meal already pre-selected. But regardless it was a nice surprise and the food was amazing. The location is great, the staff were extremely attentive and I got to chat with the head chef for a bit. Come to find out that Jeff started at the Metropolitan Steak House in Seattle. Him and I knew a lot of the same people from me going to the Met many many times over the years. Overall an outstanding experience. A must try in my books!!

However, we noticed that the property is showing its age, and several items appear to need maintenance or replacement. The toaster was rusted out, cabinets are starting to peel, and the Teflon pans are peeling. Housekeeping wasn't as clean as past stays as there was dust on the nightstands and dirty grout in the bathroom. Our biggest disappointment was what happened after we checked out. We accidentally enabled the parental controls on the TV, and instead of handling it as a technical issue, the manager called us multiple times and threatened to charge us for an additional night's stay if it wasn't resolved by us. The manager, Brett admitted to not even googling how to reset the TV before repeatedly calling us. The issue was ultimately fixed with our help but there was a lot of drama. We hope the hotel invests in updating the property and focuses on providing the kind of customer service that encourages guests to return.

I couldn't believe how close we were to Haystack Rock! The parking was a breeze and love the easy access to the sand. The room is not air conditioned, which is fine because it's almost always cool in Cannon Beach, but the constant open windows combined with the lack of air condition make it prone to grow mildew and our room did smell of mildew.

Schooners Inn is the perfect location on Cannon Beach. Close proximity to town and Insomnia Coffee [awesome coffee]. Cannon Beach is packed with people in the summer so it is hard to manuever through traffic, but if you happen to be coming from the north to the south on the 101 -- you can get off at Cannon's most northern exit and skip a lot of it. We liked Schooner's Inn as far as most amenities. One main issue is the malfunctioning toilet that did not flush properly at all. It was clean but it is very dated. And lastly, people should pay attention to the times posted for outside noise, as sound carries pretty loudly. We would stay there again.

That said, why, why, why, do the dog-friendly rooms have carpeting??? The carpeting is old, and obviously, has been visited by many, many pets. *Tip-- vinyl flooring is much easier to keep clean if a hotel accepts pets. 2. When we inquired about the Cannon Beach Trolley we'd read about in guidebooks, the young woman working the desk had no idea whether or when the trolley ran. She suggested we check at the bus stop. This seems like it should be basic information for front desk staff in a vacation town motel. On the positive side: 1. Eirin was pleasant to work with, 2. The coffee for the room coffee pot was better than most, and, 3. Housekeeping did a good job straightening/cleaning the room (but of course, there is no way they could erase the stinky carpeting).

Updating my review over 3 years later! We have stayed at Ecola Inn annually for 4 years now. As my…read moreprevious review states, the view is incredible and it's always a fantastic stay every time. I wanted to add some details: You get 1 parking spot per room for the duration of your stay which is amazing and quite literally feet away from the famous haystack entrance. Bigger cars might prefer more ideal spots along the sides of the parking lot to reduce congestion of the entrance but those are limited. So plan the times you leave accordingly. Their booking system is different from anywhere else we've stayed. For the dates you stay, at check out, you get dibs on the same dates the following year. Which is why many guests have maintained the same reservation for many years. (That is also why it is always booked out) We see some of the same people every year which is also cool! It will require a $100 deposit which will be deducted from your total if choose not to book the following year. Otherwise that same deposit rolls over year after year. I found the full size refrigerator amazing for new moms who breastfeed and need to freeze their milk. I was able to continue my breastfeeding journey on vacation which I'm grateful for. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need; silverware, dishes, new sponge, dish soap, salt & pep, roasting pan, frying pan, pots, cast iron skillet, microwave, oven, coffee etc. So for families with small children, this also means snacks & mealtimes can be cooked inside your room. (We stop at Costco in Warrenton on the drive over!) If you want the biggest room, choose room #5. It is up a flight of stairs so keep that in mind. It's so spacious. There's a back room with 2 queen size beds, tv & vanity. That's where our kids sleep and plenty of room to play. Bonus, there a door separating the main part of the room where there is another queen bed, kitchen, fireplace and of course, the killer view. They are very strict (as they should be) about fire department requirements regarding how many people can be in each room. There are zero exceptions to maximum capacity. So book accordingly, not based on how many beds there are. Children are included in that count. There is no traditional turn down service but clean towels are provided every morning if you wish. Guests are asked (or have been in the past via the handbook) to remove their own trash which is right under the stairs requiring little to no effort. Also to remove shoes at the door to prevent sand buildup on the carpets as it's difficult to remove. Out of respect for Rosa (who we love) and her staff, we make sure the room is clean of any dishes, garbage before we check out as well as stripping the sheets and leaving on the bed for easier turn down for the next guest. Dogs are allowed on the property granted you pickup after them & remain respectful. No leaving dog unattended. The lower rooms have direct access to the backyard for easy potty breaks. The weather here is kinda funny in the earlier months of the year because it will forecast rain the whole week and be sunny/beautiful for at least half the day.
