She spent a total of 10 minutes with me and didn't address my initial issue. She then sent it out to pathology for review. I have now received 2 additional bills totaling over $1,000. One is from pathology and one is from another company that "doubled" checked the pathology work. None of this was explained upfront nor did I verbally agree to any of this. The office lady Susan is totally useless and is no help and can't explain why they do this. Such unnecessary billing just to get extras money. Once again, STAY AWAY.

Five stars almost doesn't feel like enough…read more There is something happening in medicine that I don't think most patients fully realize. More and more medical practices are becoming larger, more corporate and increasingly driven by efficiency, volume and economics. Somewhere along the way, the relationship between a medical professional and a patient can start to feel secondary. South Coast Dermatology Institute is one of those places that reminds you what medicine should still feel like. I originally came here because of Dr. Vince Afsahi, and I have tremendous respect for him. He was always incredibly good to me. I haven't seen him personally in years, though, and strangely, that may be one of the greatest compliments I can give this practice. I now see Selise James and never find myself thinking that I wish I were seeing Dr. Afsahi instead, or that I am somehow getting a different level of care because I am not seeing the founder or "top" doctor. Selise is exceptional. That tells me this isn't about one great physician. It is the culture of the entire practice. Today gave me one of the best examples of that. I had Selise look at a spot on the bottom of my foot that had been there for months. It had an unusual shape, and when she first looked at it, she was genuinely concerned. She examined it carefully with a magnifying lens, took her time with it, and then grabbed a cotton swab, soaked it in cleaning solution and wiped the spot away. Yes, it was dirt. I was embarrassed, but in the best possible way. We both started laughing, and what struck me was how relieved she was. She told me she loves when something like that happens. I know that sounds like a small thing, but it stayed with me. It is actually pretty rare to find people who genuinely celebrate the good outcome with you instead of simply moving on to the next patient. She was happy that there was nothing wrong with me, and you could tell it was real. That interaction captures what is different about this place. They will actually sit with you and have a conversation before they start doing anything. They listen, explain things, ask questions and make you feel like a person instead of an appointment. That has become incredibly rare. The rest of the practice is equally strong. The staff is efficient, organized and genuinely nice. They clearly stay current with technology, not just in the clinical side of dermatology but even in the way appointments and communication are handled. Everyone I have dealt with has been experienced, knowledgeable and professional. My skin test came back clear today, which obviously was great news. But I also walked out feeling a little better about the world than I did when I walked in. I had been down on how much things have changed and how impersonal so many parts of medicine have become. This visit reminded me that there are still people who care deeply about doing things the right way and who haven't lost the human side of medicine. That is why I think South Coast Dermatology Institute is best in class. You expect expertise. You expect good technology. You expect competent medical care. What you don't always expect anymore is to leave feeling genuinely cared for, and maybe even feeling a little better about people. That is what this place does.

And to be brutally honest, these negative reviews cant be farther from the truth!!! disclaimer: i dont know anyone at this office, Im not an employee, and no one has paid me to write this! yes, it is a busy office, but its like a well oiled machine! i signed in, introduced myself , given I WAS RUDE when I came in becuase i was on my cell phone taking a call. They were professional about it, didnt say anything and I apologized and within 5 min of sitting down I saw my doctor. Dr. Muirhead, the dermatologist. He was pleasant, attentive, on point when I introduced myself as a fellow healthcare collegue. I had a female nurse practitioner in the room with him which was awsome so their is no awkwardness, she was making notes on her iPad as he was telling her his observations. I asked for a cover and although he was intrurrupted a few times during the complete body examination . I do have to say it was the pathologist with an urgent diagnosis, so he got a pass.. Everything went well, he answered my questions competently and I was blown away. i go in for my biopsy in a month, as i left i was sent to the front desk where i put in my appointment for follow up and I actually mentioned how surprised I was at my experienced based on what I was expecting prior from the hideous reviews. they smiled, appreciated my compliments to everyone of them and i thought i would put in a REAL REVIEW based on my experience, However, while I was waiting I did observe a woman trying to be seen as a walk in and was waiting for someone to cancel. having a full house with a packed schedule for these doctors , I cant imagine waiting there hoping a spot opens up. i suggest making an appointment and sticking to it. i could sense this lady cursing as I was walking through the doors after waiting 5 min to be seen , while waiting for someone to cancel ., and it sure wasnt going to be me! Lol.. so fellow Yelpers! The moral of my story is dont always judge a book by its reviews, go in with caution, but have an open mind, you might be just positively surprised! go job guys, and i promise not to be rude by being on the cell phone, my bad!

I've been coming to Dr. Said's office for many years and I always know that she is running behind…read moreand takes over a lot of patients but I appreciated her kindness and she will take her time to give me tips for my skin etc.. even when she was in a rush. Each time I've gone, she is always in a rush, you can see the way she talks, she moves, she examines you etc... However, today I had the worst experience I've ever experience myself with a provider, not ever has a doctor only spent 2 mins with me, doctor if you see this, I was crying not because of my skin issues but because I felt so rushed and no time to even ask questions, I was frustrated and had just shut down. I had even written down my questions and had no time to speak or bring them up, she was so rushed and her offices was full of patients. I was referred to a dermatologist by my primary doctor for two different skin conditions and instead of going to the referred doctor, I came to see Dr Said thinking that it was going to be better since she had seen me before. I don't think she even looked at my chart, I had emailed my pathology results to the office. She only focused on one of the skin conditions and didn't bother to look at my records. I had no time to talk, ask questions, she looked at one lesion for 20 seconds and she was already writing what she was going to prescribed. I try to bring the second skin condition and she didn't bother to examine me again. My appointment was at 12:30pm and I had arrived at 12:20 but she didn't make it to my room until 1:30 and when I say that she was there for two minutes, I am not lying, I looked at my phone and two minutes is what she spent with me, she was out of the room by 1:32 pm. As a patient I felt very ignored, disappointed and not heard and frustrated that I had to wait an hour to get two minutes with no time to ask questions. My best friend just went to a dermatologist and she even came out with a mole removed because her dermatologist took the time to examine her whole body for any possible skin issues and to ask questions. I read the comments from yelp and it seems that others have had the same experience. She overbooks patients and doesn't provide the right time to the patient and she is always in a rush She told me that I had aczema from our last appointment and trying to blame me for not taking care of myself, not once on the previous appointment did she told me that or diagnosed me with anything, she had said I had a rash probably from sweat. Now it makes sense that I've been getting all these rashes randomly. I'm very dissatisfied on today's experience, she is a sweet doctor but I am doubting that she is genuine and that she cares for her patients.
