8/16/19-8/18/19. This review is for the Liberty Glen campgrounds; I reserved a double site for a group of 14 and chose Loop B 63... where there is 3 smelly Porta potties and the water was so hard to locate that we thought there was no accessible water in the whole Loop B, (we used our own water). We ended up finding the water on the last day when we were packing, it's a long white tube with a green lever a few feet behind the garbage can where the grass/dirt are. Almost all of their restrooms were locked. Their website says there's warm shower, yes, only at Loop C (but watch out! My sister showered in one of the stalls in the women's restroom and it was cold water). Their website says there's toilets, yes, in loop C. The campsite itself is not too bad; it was spacious, and we had both shade and sun. And Yes, Yellow Jackets everywhere. FYI- Lake Sonoma/beach is a private facility and they charge $10 for parking. All and all, it wasn't too bad and even the first timers said they'll go camping again... just maybe at a different campground. read more

Checked a few trails at Lake Sonoma on a warm Sat 3/22/14. The Visitor Center & Fish Hatchery are Must do! But if you have more time you can do some hiking on trails around the lake. We planned to have lunch at the Overlook, but the parking lot had a barracade, supposedly lack of funding so they closed it off - boo. We then drove to Skaggs Springs Vista where there was one picnic table, no bathrooms, where we had lunch with a view of Lake Sonoma. After we finished lunch we started on the Laughing Springs Trail which is ticky, then turned Right on the South Lake Trail which we continued onwards to the Overlook parking lot & then onwards to the Overlook which has an Awesome Two-Deck Overlook. Best is the top one with a good map of the area, the bottom deck is just ok - not as good. Then we hiked back, when we got back to the junction of S. Lake Trail we continued on it to finish the loop. It's longer & way more steep. You can see a Primitive Campground which I read most boat-in so not a quiet camping area. Continued onwards was long, hot, & steep trail. I would like to go back one day to do more hiking, but the 2hr drive makes it a bit hard. Maybe if the regular campsites are nice I might go since Seniors w/ Pass only pay Half Price! read more

We stayed here over Memorial Day Weekend and the host was fantastic. It's tough to arrive somewhere on a holiday weekend with first come/ first serve spots, but the host didn't give us any restrictions and we took what we considered the best site. It ended up being a double site and the host the next day mentioned that we were singles, so we would have to move if someone came in trying to claim it. Luckily for us, that didn't happen and we could stay at our site. The campground is driving distance to the lake, but there's nearby hiking and biking. The sites are private enough (especially in the no RV loops) that you can enjoy yourself and feel like you're not camping in a small city. The bathrooms are relatively clean and showers were warm. read more

The lake itself is okay other than not having any real swimming beaches. We rented Kayaks and it was the worst kayaking trip ever!!! The staff were really disorganized (and it was Monday and we were the only ones renting anything from the Marina) and the gentleman checking us in for the kayak rental was Rude! When I went to talk to the manager Janet afterwards....I just got a Blank Stare...literally she just stared into space and mumbled. This was a trip for my wife's birthday, all four boys were home for summer and we were really looking forward to this. The staff there should be ASHAMED of their behavior. read more

Beautiful lake that we visited this week looking for a picnic spot. We didn't have a lot of time but we found a place to have some picnic food up on the lookout. Even though there was no grass or tables, we made do with the circular table/sitting area and really enjoyed the view. The place is clean and not many people, just a few, were there at the lookout. Also, there are restrooms and trash cans so it's not as remote as you might think since it's up the road above the lake. This was my first time here and I really enjoyed it. I honestly thought we were high enough where no ants would come after our food but low and behold - they climbed up the pole and began their invasion! The little creatures (actually they were BIG!) were just doing their job but it freaked me out because once I noticed them on the table, I looked on the bottom of my paper plate and there must have been about 10 of them - GAH!!! At least we were done eating but I would recommend bringing a pre-made sandwich up there if you're looking to eat lunch. That's what the other people did. This looks like a very nice place to camp, fish etc. read more

Didn't know I was staying at a night club. My experience with this campground was pretty bad. I will say, the lake and the hiking trails are very nice. However, the atmosphere of the campground is one that you will want to be aware of before you go. The only reason this campground was even on my radar is because it is supposedly a good "dark sky" spot. That is, an area free of light pollution, which allows you to have a clearer view of the night sky than you would in the city. I decided to stay at the campground and went to reserve a campsite. Unfortunately, the only site available was the cabin for $75 a night. I was very excited to see the "dark sky" feature so I booked the cabin. When I arrived, the attendant asked for the name on my reservation. I gave him my name, told him I have the cabin. He found my reservation and told me, much to my surprise, "it's first come first serve, if you see an open site go ahead and put this yellow tag on the post" I had to reiterate that I had booked the cabin, he looked at the reservation again and realized that I did. He said he wasn't sure what the code was to get into the cabin, but to check with the camp host. I went to the camp host and he said it's one of two codes, but he wasn't sure which one. Luckily, I was able to get into the cabin with one of the codes. As I arrived at the cabin, it was clear that all but one of the surrounding sites were vacant. I was a little upset that it was not clear that ALL the sites were first come first serve. Instead, I had spent the cost of booking 3 sites for the cost of the cabin. Not a huge problem, however, it would have been nice to know this before I booked the cabin. We saw that the site across from us was clearly occupied. The camper returned about an hour after we got there and decided that it would be awesome to play their music for the entire campground to hear! Yes, the music was loud and had enough bass to ensure that you heard every kick and every note of the bassline! Just what I came to the forest for! Oh dear, she was not alone, we were also treated to several other campers loudly playing their music. None of this would have been so bad if the bass wasn't amplified. We could clearly hear it and it pretty much ended our peaceful getaway. I would have cancelled then, except there is a clear "no cancellation" policy. Families started piling in at the vacant campsites around the cabin. Clearly with no regard to how many people were staying at a "single" site. No, we had two carloads of adults and kids pile into the tiny campsite next to us. To say the adults had poor control of their kids was an understatement. The kids decided it would be fun to harass us and ride their bikes through our campsite and "dare" each other to run through our campsite while screaming at the top of their lungs. Thanks parents! I will say, after 10-11pm, the noise died down and it was finally nice and peaceful. I looked up to see the "dark sky" I was so hyped to see. Well, save your money, it was a letdown. Maybe it was the smoke from all the campfires, who knows, but the view wasn't much better than it was in my backyard in the city. In addition to all of this, some other things to be aware of, prepare to have yellow jackets buzzing around you whenever you eat. The camp showers are disgusting, so bring your own. The toilets near us were closed, but had porta potties. We chose to walk to the bathroom that was open. The only saving grace and the only reason I would even consider returning was the lake and the hiking trails. If you're lucky, you can snag one of the campsites overlooking the valley. Of course, you can't reserve it, you just have to make the long drive to the campground and hope that it's available! For that reason alone, I won't be returning. read more

Nice lake and a great place to fish. Also great for kayaking, jet skiing, boating. You can camp here also by boating in to camp sites. It would be nice to have some drive up camp sites. I think you can even boat in to do pig hunting during season, you can check with the marina. There is three boat docks one being at the marina with day use fee which has bathrooms and a store. The other is across the bridge parking to the left and a boat launch fee. There is another boat launch but only for non motorized boats, kayaks ect. This is in Cloverdale called Yorty Creek. Take the road next to Chevron and follow the signs to the lake (Yorty Creek). Also there is a parking day use fee. I was at Yorty Creek on June 30th 2017 with my kayak to do some bass fishing of which I caught 2, one approximately 1 1/2 pounds and the other was approximately 3 1/2 pounds. All my fish I catch and release... On my way out of the water after the day of fishing and taking pictures, there was a fire and fire crews all over the ridge with airplanes dropping fire retardant and the Cal Fire helicopter which came right down to the lake to drop in their Bambi fire bucket in the lake so they could go drop it on the fire. I took a short video of the incident then headed out to see if I was even able to leave the one way in and one way out long road back to Cloverdale. Thankfully I was able to make it out. This is a great lake for fishing especially for Largemouth Bass. Great lake to go on some of the long walking trails to the lake. So get out there and get some sun... read more

BLACK MOUNTAIN CAMP SITE - Boat In Sites 01 & 03 Reviewed for August 2016 Don't go. Just turn around, get back in your car (or your boat, if you got that far) and go elsewhere. The only reason it gets even one star is because when we were leaving, and boating back, the views were actually very nice and the water was cool and refreshing. That said: 1.) Yellow jackets. EVERYWHERE. Goes without saying, but yellow jackets that are super aggressive and out in force here from 6am - 8pm. You literally can't even be outside with them. The whole Black Mountain site seems to be placed squarely on top of a giant nest. No one at the reservations desk or the check-in crew gave a heads-up, and when we returned to the marina for wasp traps the next morning (Saturday), they were out. Met with slack-jawed blank stares when asked if there were any in the back or if more were coming in. "Uhhhh, no?" Granted, we were woefully under prepared for this possibility, but seriously, since you KNOW your sites are on top of wasp nests, PLEASE make sure you keep traps in stock, for the love of Christ. 2.) We had reserved a boat weeks in advance. The marina overbooked and gave our boat to someone else. Again, NOT OK. After many hours of shuffling around, we were given the worst boat in the fleet - a pontoon boat literally held together in places with epoxy and duct tape - the console wasn't even secured in place and you could actually move it - and were told not to drive it at night since it had no running lights. We returned the next morning to get the better boat that we were promised, and were indeed helped, but hours of the trip were wasted both Friday and Saturday on the staff trying to find their collective ass with a map. 3.) Dirty. The whole place is just dirty. It's called dirt camping for a reason, and this place happens to be the epitome. If you've ever been to Lake San Antonio, Oroville, or Collins Lake, it's like that, except for the staff at those lakes come around to collect the garbage (which attracts more wasps), clean up the fire pits (again, wasps) and stock the bathrooms. None of that had been done at our site by the time we arrived (4pm on a Friday), and I'd wager that none of it was done after either. We found a large pool floatie box full of dirty diapers and discarded food, packaging, etc, in our campsite when we got there, and the ashes in the fire pit were so deep it was obvious no one had cared for the sites in a while. There was trash strewn everywhere, dog poop, broken glass, cigarette butts, and, inexplicably, an old sleeping bag on one of the picnic tables. 4.) Remember 6am - 8pm? That was for the wasps. 8pm - 6am is for the raccoons, skunks, and boars. Now we camp a LOT. Not much backpacking going on anymore, but car/boat camping? Bring it. We totally get that it's primitive and outdoors. We signed up for a boat-in site for a reason. But literally as soon as the sun goes below the hills, the raccoons and skunks start their patrols. Bold as brass, they are. The boars wait until the dead of night. Good times. Take away - hey people, stop feeding the wildlife and clean up your GD campsites! 5.) "Tent" sites. Do not be fooled. You can comfortably pitch one, *maybe* 2 tents on these sites. Since they are all so heavily and steeply sloped, rocky, and pot holed, it is ridiculous to think otherwise or bill it any other way. And we're talking 2-3 person tents, not these ginormous palaces that sleep 8 people and have a separate living room with foyer entrance. I'm talking little backpacking tents. 6.) The boat launch is a sh1t show. They have one launch that services both the marina and all of the folks coming in with their own boats, so you get all manner of people from "I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so this is going to take me an hour" to "get the F out of my way you stupid tourist! I just want to get my obnoxious speedboat in the water asap before I kill you." The marina staff literally can't seem to tell their asses from their elbows and take forever to get you through the line, and when you do manage to finally get your boat, you have to go jockey in to the launch to pick up your stuff and people. There is only one ramp, and it's two cars wide. So poorly planned I don't even know what else to say. 7.) Did I mention how incredibly inept and rude the staff is - especially the parking guy? We were told upon arrival that we would NOT have to pay again for parking, since we had a camp site reservation, and then he made us pay $20 to get out of the upper lot, and $30 for our friends to get out of the lower lot (also reservation, 2 sites for 2 nights). He probably pocketed it. Grrr. And then had the nerve to yell and swear at everyone just trying to figure out the absolute CLUSTER he was creating. Some people! 8.) No wake zones exist for a reason, you a$$holes. Take your 90's jet ski and heavy metal party boat elsewhere, Oakley-wearers. Never again. read more

JULY 20, 2015 Liberty Glen Campground 13005 Rockpile Road Geyserville, CA 95441 This is the physical address Liberty Glen campers should use from Recreation.gov. The other is a mailing address (Skaggs Springs Road) which will send you south to some other part of Lake Sonoma. Follow the driving instructions when you make required reservations through recreation.gov. There are a couple of small signs indicating where Liberty Glen Campgrounds are. The campgrounds are situated around a canyon along several picturesque loops which either overlook the canyon or lake, depending on which loop you pick. We noticed maybe less than 1/2 of the sites on the loop with the bathrooms/potable water had decent tree coverage. In summer, it gets very hot and trees become important to shade and keep us cool. This campground is run by the US Army Corp of Engineers so prices are lower than State Parks. You can make your reservation online or by phone, specifying number of people and what kind of equipment you'll have. That will determine if you'll be in a single or double site and the price varies between the two. The campground should be able to provide most reservations unless it's a holiday weekend and it's a mixture of tent and RV camping. Once you arrive at the check in gate, you'll meet the camp manager who will give you instructions on where the campgrounds are. You'll drive through various loops, look for a site, leave something invaluable at the site to claim it's yours, then return to the gate to let the camp manager know which site you've picked. The campgrounds are run like a tight ship. No loud music/rowdiness tolerated after 10 pm. We heard incredibly loud music being played (we guessed) with car speakers during the day, and the camp manager drove by and within 15 minutes, the music was turned down low/off. The camp manager was attentive during our visit as he visited the grounds several times a day, smiling and waving at campers if he recognized them as he checked on things. Amenities: There are several bathrooms, free showers (hot water varies) and potable drinking water spigots through several of the loops but not all. No kitchen sinks. So keep cooking to a minimum unless you enjoy kneeling down and doing balancing acts with dishes. Bring your own TP. There's also a children's playground in Loop A. We noticed mostly families with young kids visited this campgrounds since Lake Sonoma was about 1/2 mile away by car. Our stay was nice and relatively quiet when the kids nearby went to the lake or to bed early. Bring ear plugs for noisy kids and generators. Bugs: Not many mosquitos but yellow jackets were aggressive little buggers any time we tried to prepare food. We saw other campers hang yellow jacket traps which is a good idea. The top of our tent seemed to be the hot spot where daddy long leg spiders liked to huddle together for warmth. read more

Liberty Glen Campground 13005 Rockpile Road Geyserville, CA 95441 PROS This review is for Liberty Glen Campground. I feel like we really lucked out with our timing and the campsites that were available to us. We got a large corner site with 2 huge, shady oak trees, only one neighbor to one side of us & two small sites across from us, and a short walk to the restrooms & the amphitheater/park. The amenities (bathroom, additional portable toilets, showers, water spigots, amphitheater, park) were sufficient and well-kept. The landscape was gorgeous and although there was no immediate water access, the campground was a short (5 minute) drive to the boat dock / bridge / vista point, and a 30 minute drive to the recreational beach (Yorty Creek Beach). The campground feels like a remote location, but it's a really convenient 30 minute drive to and from highway 101 (and a beautiful drive through the vineyards depending on which direction you're coming from). It's gated and padlocked after-hours, which I feel neutral about but I think it's fair to note. CONS The only reason why I don't give it more stars is because of the scarceness of garbage bins, only 1-2 large collection bins for every loop. I've been going to burning man since 2008 and align with the "leave no trace" you-pack-it-in-and-pack-it-out philosophy, The masses, however, tend to not be so considerate. I noticed light litter scattered around our campsite and around certain areas of the campground. The worst of it was the garbage left inside the fire pit we saw when we arrived -- several partially-melted plastic items & utensils, a burnt round tin, a child's sock, and a half-burnt dirty diaper (ick). We made sure to leave our site cleaner than we found it, but I think placing a few more large bins so that each site has at least one within reasonable walking distance, might help keep this issue under control. I'd hate to see such a beautiful campground deteriorate because of something like this. I'd definitely consider going back to this site for future camping trips. read more

My husband and I took our little doggie up to Lake Sonoma for a day hike. Beautiful scenery, and great weather - mid-70s with a nice cool breeze. Hiked approximately 4 miles total - parked at Grey Pine, took Grey Pine to Dry Creek to the Little Flat lot, crossed the street, picked up the start of Bummer Trail, then got confused...guess it's called Bummer Trail for a reason. So, we went back to the road, and then picked up the Crossroad Trail which picked up again with Bummer Trail; took that to North Slope, then No Name Trail back to the Grey Pine lot. Trail signage was great in some spots, and horrible in others. Should have taken the hint that Bummer Trail would be a bummer. Lots of stickers, poor signage, and the most sun-exposed of the trails we went on. Overall, it was pretty - the lake is a beautiful blue, lots of shore access points, amazing trees and flowers, and we even saw a few deer! There are horses allowed on the trails too. Beware - there are TICKS here. Between my husband, my dog and myself, we found 7 ticks. Make sure to take all precautions...reading about ticks and Lyme Disease isn't a fun way to end an otherwise pretty hike. read more

Because I spend my summers on Dry Creek Road, I suppose it was inevitable that I would return to this dreaded venue. Yet another huge FAIL. Rented kayaks this time, so after checking in and allowing an imprint of the credit card to be made, I hiked back up to the car to secure my wallet and other belongings I didn't want to see wet or sink to the lake's bottom. When we returned promptly at the scheduled time, they told me I had to return to the car to retrieve my credit card, so they could run it through the machine. WHY then, just an hour prior had I provided it for an imprint AND signed it?? When I questioned the logic, the guy said, "I train my employees to tell people that they will need their credit card both before an after. Its not my fault if they don't follow through." I'm sorry, its not YOUR fault, YOUR employees don't follow protocol?? When I asked him why he couldn't key in the credit card numbers from the imprint he'd taken, he said the credit card company charges him $3 to do so. MAYBE this is true, but I find it hard to believe that there is a monetary difference between swiping my credit card or keying it in manually. Seems suspect. PS - I am an athlete and far from too lazy to hike back and forth to the car... but I had three young children on my watch who couldn't be left on the water's edge alone... so it was more about principle and having to drag these poor kids back and forth on what was supposed to be a fun adventure. Perhaps a Fendi bag and a bad attitude were all LL needed to get him in a good mood, but all this girl needs is sun, water, trees, friends, and wine to feel peachy keen. After 3 months of a perpetually gray summer that made us feel like we were living in some David Fincher film ala "Seven" or "The Crow," we sun-deprived city refugees escaped to the wilds of Sonoma County. Two hours later, but a world away.what was the golden orb on the horizon? The sky has an interesting pigment, what do they call it? Blue? We sunned our pasty, Vitamin-D-deficient, vampire skin. We frolicked in the water, stock-piled on a raft 4 at a time, fished, drank wine, drank Coors when we ran out of wine, ate tomato-mozzarella salad, ate cheese-its when said salad was devoured, waved at people on boats, scared some kids and probably some families too. Me a nature girl? Who whudda thunk it? Maybe one day I'll trade in my world of hair dryers and martinis for braids and moonshine. Eh, probably not. read more

Lake Sonoma is a little man-made lake (picture a couple of interconnected valleys full of water) with plenty of structure for fishing and lots of open-water for swimming or driving your boat or jet-ski or whatever. Its got a decent top-water bite in the morning and evening, and even late afternoon you can hook-up with some lovely small-mouth if you keep your lure moving fast and close to the bottom. Although I think its probably useless, I can't seem to stop myself from imploring those of you with motorized craft to (1) please try to minimize your resultant chop as it disturbs the fish and fishermen alike, and; (2) PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE DRUNK - people swim in this lake (as in all over this lake, sometimes across it) and hitting them with your boat will suck for all concerned. read more

My family has camped at lake sonoma for many many years. Boating in is fantastic. Be sure to bring garbage bags and plenty of drinking water as there is none at the camp sites. Last summer my husband and I boated into a site at bucks pasture. End of August. In the middle of the night, a large group of wild pigs came in with their big momma and completley devoured our campsite in search of any food they hadn't already obtained. It was the scariest 10 or so minutes I have ever experienced camping as we were in the tent with our 9 month old and all her food was in the tent, If camping, reminder to put up food if you can! The pigs got into our cooler on top of the table. After devouring everything they finally left in peace, thank goodness!!! We left first thing in the am cause all our food was gone!! We had the best time camping at Liberty Glen!! It's a beautiful campground, with some awesome views of the lake from certain sites. Loop C is definitely the nicest. We found the facilities to be in good condition, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We also spent a great day on Lake Sonoma, renting a boat from the marina store. All in all a great camping trip- we can't wait to plan another weekend out there! read more

Went camping out here with some friends. We picked a spot way in the back away from the lake and the views were SPECTACULAR. The campsites were pretty large and flat. Although, halfway through the night I was attacked by an army of caterpillars and spiders the likes I have never witnessed. The next day we went and played some softball on the large park area at the base of the lake, it was huuuuuuuuuuuge, great place for a BBQ. I have been to a lot of parks before, but the campsites here were nice and the park area was very well kept. A+ read more

This is just for the Ranch at the marina. 6 of us did a trail ride for my niece's 9th birthday and had a great time. I didn't catch the name of our trail guide and her partner but she was very patient with the two younger ones. It was a beautiful afternoon on the the trail with a beautiful view of the lake and fluffy clouds over the Geysers. Would definitely go again (maybe without the young ones). Bonus: there is a bar with local wine and beer right next to the horse pens! read more

HIKE IN CAMPING: 1 Star LIBERTY GLEN: 4 stars In August, I had a similar experience at Madrone Point as did Lotte T. with regard to the lakeside campsites (hike-in sites). The trails are rarely marked, and the trail maps the campground provided made little sense even to someone that has been hiking and navigating with maps since childhood. After beginning again and again on what we thought was the right trail, we were getting pretty frustrated and tired from carrying our supplies and not getting anywhere. However, we flagged down the ranger, who made it very easy for us to salvage a camping trip. He let us pick a site at Liberty Glen and we still managed to have a pretty good time. The lake is not a great place to swim in case you are counting on that. If you have a boat, you will probably love this place. I thought I'd be able to put my kids in a spot to catch a few fish, but we didn't really find a spot that was accessible from shore. CAUTIONS: Watch out for red flag warnings... this place could go up quickly; the winds are notorious through these hills and can even extend into the night. If so, please watch your fire! As for animals, definitely put your food up off the ground and away from your tents to keep the pigs and other possible critters from spoiling your trip. We did so and had no issues whatsoever. Overall, the countryside is beautiful, the campground is comfortable; water is available near the site (though we brought in our own drinking water) and nice, warm showers, too. So, it might not have been the back country-lite experience we were hoping for but since we live less than an hour away, we will come back again. It's much more affordable than Cal State Parks (I think it was $14). read more

Its pretty up here and warmer than Santa Rosa by about 6-8 degrees This place is really like 4 lakes The big giant main part that is calm in morning and gets choppy after about noon. The part on the other side all the wake/ski boats having stereo wars churn into chops about noon. The friggin sucky ass slow zone connecting the two sides that seemingly takes forever, but you better go slow as the sherrif is all over the place. And they check out a lot of boats, so don't be totally wasted if you are driving. We've been boarded for skiing after sunset and checked again. And the slow zones on all the little "fingers" of the lake are actually pretty nice. good swimming and good places to tie up and hang. The water is decent some areas are cleaner than others you will have to figure that one out for yourself. Most campsites are by boat/hike in only, they are mostly on or are reasonably close to the water. the drive in spots are way high on top of a hill and getting to water looks to be a very serious hike. (The boats look like ants from here) The resort marina and ramp has a store here (spendy) but they have ice. the public boat ramp is cheap 3 bucks but parking is way up the hill. (If you love excercise than the like 100 step stairs is for you) A good place, most drunk shenanigans peter out at about midnight raccoons are organized and numerous, they will open your cooler if not locked down some how. I left a pineapple on the boat and in the morning it was totally violated, it had a big raccoon chomp hole in it. read more

from the time i was 11 until i was 17, i went to summer camp every summer. it was a dream: getting into the great outdoors, tons of activities to keep an ADD kid from getting bored, seeing all the same "summer friends" that come every year, and best of all, no parents. during those angsty, formative teenage years, the most incredible thing is having your only guardians be even more angsty college students/camp counselors, whose main concerns for the summer are getting tans and hooking up with each other (the ranks of whom i joined when my time came). under this little to non-existent supervision, i managed to partake in my first cigarette (gross), my first french kiss (even grosser), and many, many toilet paperings of other cabins. but one of my favorite activities was one that i could actually write home to my mother about: the banana boat. 10 feet of inflatable, bright yellow joy, the banana boat was the rocket-shaped "tube" on which five campers would sit in a row and be hurtled around the river behind a speedboat. so. much. fun. predictably, the counselor in charge would often take hairpin turns in an effort to spill the campers off their perches and send them flying into the water. but when the water is teeming with jellyfish, as chesapeake bay offshoots often are, you learn to hold on. heading to lake sonoma brought back fond memories of flying behind a speedboat, wind and water whipping your face as you hold on for dear life and feel that rush of pure adrenaline. the marina and lake itself are filled with power boats, tugging tubers and wakeboarders alike, while jet skiiers weave paths around them. canoes and kayaks are available for rent, though you might feel slow and out of place in one. i was un-prepared for such water sports, but had a good time grilling out in their picnic areas (with two fairly clean grills for public use), and languishing in the sun while watching the boats go by. there is not as much grass to spread out on as i had hoped, and the bees were relentless that day, but it's a beautiful spot, and would be perfect if you owned a boat and could spend the day speeding around on an innertube with some friends. read more

Never going back here again! We literally went in for see minutes, paid the $10 fee and couldn't find any parking at all and was too busy so we decided to turn back around and leave. Upon exit the ticket man refused to refund us the $10. He had a bad attitude about it too. We was in there for a couple of minutes. How can you not give a refund we haven't even used the facilities! Also tried called the office and a grumpy lady answered and was not in the slightest bit interested or bothered. Thanks for wasting our time! You suck! read more

LIBERTY GLEN CAMPGROUND. This was one of the better campgrounds I have been to in the area, aside from a few very important factors. PROS We went camping over the weekend, Friday - Sunday and there were maybe 5 campsites used out of the maybe 20 in our loop. The sites were all big and located far enough away from each other that you almost forgot about your neighbors at times. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. Also, it is only $15 a night to camp there, in Sonoma County you can't find anything close to that. There are lots of sites available so you can have your pick. It is also beautiful, set back a little farther into the hills. The lake is just a few minute drive from the site and there are endless amounts of hiking and biking trails. Also, there are free showers and flush toilets in each loop just steps from each campsite. Normally there is water at each site but the pipes burst the week before we went and they were still repairing them. CONS The amount of bees is insane! As others have mentioned before, they are everywhere. The moment you open a cooler or any food during the day, the bees are there. Luckily they are not wasps as everyone seems to think, they are called deer bees, and they do not sting or harm humans. They just want to eat the fat from whatever meat you may be cooking. We set out some fly paper and attached some bacon to it and within a few hours had captured close to 30 bees on the paper as you can see in the photo. If you have a screen house or canopy with netted side, bring it! Or buy wasp traps from the hardware store, however, more bees are still present. The only other issue was the heat, there is not a ton of shade at the campsites and the Dry Creek Valley is notoriously hot so just be prepared. Altogether a good campsite if you can deal with the bees and the heat. Definitely not for complainers but a good site for those people who want a cheap camping spot with lots of space, little noise, and endless outdoor activities. read more

We stayed at Liberty Glen Campground, loop C, #18 (I believe). We had a double campsite that had 4 parking spots, 2 picnic tables, 2 fire pits with grill grate attached, 3 tents, 5 humans and 2 fluffy dogs. I liked that the water spigot was really close, (there IS drinking water on loop C), there were free showers with warm water and flush toilets only about 100 feet up the hill, grocery store was only about 25 min away, plenty of space at our campsite, beautiful views and was fairly empty. (Though, we did stay during the week Tues-Thurs) Things I really didn't like: lots and lots of bees, and lots of fox tails laying around. My poor pup was covered in them after the first day, and they are sharp SOB's!! For a pet friendly site, it wasn't the best for our dogs. Overall, it was a pretty dry campsite, with very little shade. Things they don't tell you: the lake is not close. Our first day we drove about 20 minutes to what we thought was the lake, turned out, it was only a little cove that they charged us $10 to use. We were the only ones there, which was nice, but the water was pretty murky and the weather wasn't the best so we only stayed about an hour before we decided to head back to camp and would hit up Yorty Creek the following day since the lady at the cove said it was crackin'. The next morning, we left camp early since we knew we had to drive a bit to Yorty Creek, the drive was a little windy and bumpy, but very beautiful. However, when we arrived to Yorty, we took one step out of the car and immediately got back in to form a new plan. The water level was pitifully low, and the water so murky! Plus, there was this park ranger there that seemed like a jerk, so we hightailed it out of there and on a whim decided to drive another 45 minutes to Russian River. Thank God we did this, Russian River ended up being a blast! Next time, I would chose to camp closer to Russian River, Lake Sonoma was a bust for us. read more

Spent a great weekend here over the summer. We rented a speed boat and water-skiied, then rented kayaks, drove to Yorty Creek and kayaked to Thumb Camp. The area is beautiful and our campsite was clean and in great condition. They have picnic tables and fire pits. It's a great place to go camping without having to drive too far from SF. read more

I do not recommend liberty glen campgrounds to anyone!!! It is dry and burning hot. There are so many wasps you can't even eat food, And the camp hosts are rude as hell. You can't even park in the dirt you have to walk up a hill to get to your car and they want you to fit both cars in one tiny spot or else it is a 15 foller fee a night. The second you pull in if you don't have your ticket on the post then they are yelling are you. It was not a good experience. I reserved 2 nights and made it threw one day before I had to leave. read more

Right now, this is a 1-star review. This is just a review of the Liberty Glen Campground. (Not sure why Yelp sent me here) Currently, there is no water at the campground and this problem is NOT being managed well. 1. We (along with 5 others in our group) had made reservations while the water was working. NOT ONE of us was notified that there would be no water. Luckily, one of the group found out and spread the word, but imagine if we all showed up with kids and pets and had not brought extra water. 2. They would not waive the cancellation fee. One of our group opted to cancel ONLY because of the lack of running water. They should not have been charged a cancellation fee. 3. Yes, they provided portable potties. However, they did not service them at all over the entire Labor Day weekend. When we arrive on Friday, they were reasonable. By Monday, a few were literally overflowing. This was beyond disgusting. Such poor management of this problem. 4. Beyond how disgusting the potties became, they were also frequently out of TP and seat covers. And when we reported that to the very nice woman at the gate, nothing was done. We will camp here again but ONLY when they fix the water issue. With running water and well maintained bathrooms, this review would change to 4 stars. (Decent sized campsites, pretty area, nice person manning the gate. However the wood I paid for did not get delivered until the next day - after we requested it again) read more

We stayed at Liberty Glenn campgrounds. Staff was really really nice! This place gets really hot so have some shade ready. Views are really good. There are a few really cool campsites at this spot. U can see the water of Lake Sonoma..... But basically u need to drive down to it. . No piped water up there either. Over all the places is unique. read more

Did a kayaking trip here, it was pretty crowded. The lake was nice. I'd like to come back and see about renting jet skis.

created by the Army Corps of Engineers a few decades back, this park differs from other Bay Area parks - it's more geared towards power boats and water skiing. BUT it still offers awesome weather, great views, nice campsites and good trails. read more

Yay , for a lazy ass day of doing nothing. Yes I am a big fan of that. Especially when it means calling in sick to work. Shh..this is our secret. The drive was beautiful. Escaping the city into the lush rolling hills of the country wins me over every time. Seeing cows and deers makes me feel the giddiness of childhood all over again. The road leading to the lake is best lead to professional all terrain driver. Long winding roads may make you meet your breakfast in the unfriendliest way. I suppose it helps keep the lake a more secluded locale. I loved sitting at the shore dipping my feet into the water. My friends swam and rode their kayak. The lake was big enough for multiple families to boat in and swim. Picnic tables and BBQ grills available too. Get there early if you want a nice canopy. read more

No camp grounds are open that's ok I live close but to block off the parking lots to just because of a budget issue. What does it take to have a parking lot open. Even the boat in and hike in campgrounds are closed. Pack in and pack out. I went to hike a trail and parked in front of the concrete k-rail and was left a note to park on the street and not I front of the barrier. I had some reservations about camping here but it was the only place we could get reservations. Pluses: we could get it. The campsite was not too bad. Restrooms reasonably clean Minuses: can't reserve a specific site and some are better than others by far. Very very loud mountain bike group partied late into the night and blocked the road to much of loop b so they could ride their bikes (and tear up the hillside). Lots of bees. It would be hot in summer as many sites had no shade. The lake itself is a disappointment. Hard to get to, and not clean. Definitely not a campground by the lake Car camping is what it is. We had fun despite the minuses. read more

I had such time camping here at liberty glen. The people that drive around to bring you firewood are super friendly and nice. They gave the kids glow sticks for free. The site had a beautiful view and there are showers close by. When we went people ruined the bathrooms and we had to go a little further for a shower. No biggie. We went to the lake and borrowed my friends boat. The water was warm and clean. You can rent a boat if you dont have one which is awesome. I really enjoyed my stay. read more
