    Cloverdale/Healdsberg KOA, Cloverdale, CA - September 2, 2023 - Game Room
    Bruce O.

Cloverdale/Healdsberg KOA, Cloverdale, CA - August 31 - Sept. 4, 2023 This is probably the most interesting KOA we've ever been to. Closer to Cloverdale than it is to Healdsberg, the park is several miles back from the 101 freeway, perched about halfway up the mountainside, with vineyards and multimillion dollar estates surrounding the property. In the summer, summer bridge across the Russian River will shave off a few miles of your way into the park; otherwise, you'll need to go to Cloverdale and then drive about 7 miles on a two-lane road east of the Russian River to reach the park, the last mile and a half of which is a climb up to the final destination. The park is quite large, comprising at least 15 acres. There is a main office, as you enter, with a pretty well stocked store. Supposedly, there is a cafe there, but we didn't see that. They have a propane refill station. They have a catch and release pond on the property that is very nice with a couple of docks and some adirondack chairs spread around the shore. There are about 175 sites spread throughout the park, including: - about 100 full rv hookups (both 30 and 50 amp) - 15 rustic cabins - 10 deluxe cabins, and, - 50 tent sites They have a: Pool and spa Game room with pool table, air hockey, and coin operated video games Outdoor ping pong table Gathering hall Laundry mat There are lots of beautiful mature oak trees and some pines throughout the park. The main roadways in the park are paved, with partially paved and gravel roads leading to many campsites. There are a few areas along the roadways in the park where the trees are quite low hanging and impacted the top and sides of our motor home much more than we would have liked. Wish we'd have mentioned that to the park manager at the front office. They need to do a better job of keeping those trimmed. There were also lots of thorny burs on the ground and it was impossible to walk our dog along the main roads without him picking up at least 15 -30 burs every time. Not sure how to fix that. The park staff we met were very helpful and accommodating. Nick in particular was very nice and gave us some pointers about the park and surrounding area. In addition to the amenities the park has to offer, there is plenty to do in Cloverdale, Healdsberg, and the surrounding areas. This is the Alexander Valley, one of the most renowned grape growing and wine making regions in the world. The KOA park makes for a great base camp to go out and enjoy all the area has to offer. A few of the great places we visited when we were here: - La Tequila Mexican Restaurant, Cloverdale - Wolf House Brewing, Cloverdale - J. Rickard Winery, Cloverdale ($20/person tasting fee waived with two bottle purchase) - Icaria Winery, Cloverdale ($20/person tasting fee) - Dot Winery tasting room, Healdsberg (check your KOA map/brochure for 2 for 1 tasting coupon - 2 can taste for $25, which is waived with a 3 bottle purchase) - Quail and Covenant Bakery, Healdsberg - Willi's Seafood and Raw Bar (definitely make a reservation for the patio in advance) We paid about $500 for 4 nights at the KOA over Labor Day weekend. Prices are cheaper on weekdays. Wish I could leave a 5-star review, but low hanging trees along roadways and burs in and around campsites preclude that outcome. Fix those and I'll revise my review.

Check in was nothing as described in the negative reviews. Not to say their experience isn't valid of course. I was so glad it wasn't the case for me as I was preparing myself for the worse. There was a lack of introduction to the campgrounds, but that's fine by me. Map was provided and I was good to go. Afterall, it's camping. Getting out there to explore was all on me. We were assigned lot 3 where a section is shared with lots 2 and 1. We lucked having the entire section to ourselves during our stay. Given it was rainy season, I wasn't surprised. Great view full of green with a sense of being further away in isolation. Wi-Fi is free for an hour. Anything more are tiered pricing. Some may find this an inconvenience, but an open Wi-Fi is not reliable. If you are one who works remotely without a personal router, this works. No cable TV, but had great cellular reception. I could not catch any local digital channels as well. The lack of cable didn't bother me. Few minutes before 11PM, I heard gun shots. I don't think it's within the campgrounds, but definitely one of the residents close by. 30 minutes later, same thing occurred again. It's out of their control, but I would not be surprised this being a huge concern for most.

What a beautiful place with jaw dropping sites, definitely worth the trip. =D

It's been a rough 2020 with traveling and dining at new spots SO we decided to start up our camping game! We were hesitant to head here due to other reviews in other sources but we decided to give it a go since the area along is gorgeous. The drive is pretty easy, and yes the road leading up to the campsite isn't the easiest but in my opinion it's not an appropriate way to rate a camping location due to that. While it does take a good 15 to get to the site from the main road it's not a deal breaker ;) in fact the deeper you go in you see just how gorgeous the location is. Smack dab in the middle of wine Alexander valley. Grapevines, trees, clear skies, and gorgeousness. You cannot ask for better scenery. Most KOA's offer full hookups and this one is no different. There is no cable and the wifi is spotty, and you have to pay for it if you want it but it was only 10 bucks for the weekend. However, we have AT&T and had signal all weekend. We were able to steam our college football game, no problem. There are showers on site. They aren't the fanciest but they do have heat lamps and do the job just fine. Bring your water flip flops :) there is a pond on-site stocked with fish for fishing. If you have friends who don't have a trainer or don't want to tent-camp there are tons of cute little cabins on the property. We were able to visit a winery while here and all in all it was an amazing time! We will be back :)

I was excited to visit the Cloverdale / Healdsburg KOA despite the negativity on Yelp and TripAdvisor and I was hoping to have a good experience and leave a good review since many people can be unreasonable. But here you go. Pro (singular): nice large campsite #4. Cons: *Pam was rude (check the other reviews, this is a common comment about Pam) on the phone when I verified my reservation. Also rude in person when I was trying to redeem points. Also rude/argumentative after I called and tried to explain her error and then she followed that up with a new error. She also argued that redeeming 25,000 points (for $50) is the same as redeeming 15,000 points ($25). *18 and up hot tub was full of children. (rules not enforced) *tents in RV sites even though the rules were no tents (rules not enforced) *many of the pool chairs and umbrellas were broken. *bathrooms are a far walk from most of the campsites. *no cable tv. First time seeing this at a KOA. *no free wifi. This KOA resort was very un-KOA like and did not seem to meet normal KOA standards. I was planning on leaving a 3 star review but finding the errors today and then talking to rude Pam dropped it down to a 1. Will not be back.

Hopefully this is the honest review you are looking for. This place was really a great place to stay. We were hesitant because of the yelp reviews and staying over the holiday weekend. However we were pleasantly surprised. Pamela was an absolute sweetheart. She always said hi to my 1 and 2 year old and made some great recommendations of the site. We check in, the campsite was what we expected, plenty of trees for shade, brush, and large enough space for our tent and our van. For a campsite, it was really clean. The pool was great! The people were super friendly and I saw no cleanliness concerns. Sure, the patio furniture was mix and match, but it's camping, not the Four Seasons. My kiddos are young and the pool starts at 3 ft to 8 ft. So if you have toddlers who can't swim, it may not be the best place to chill. Our toddlers hung out on the steps with two other kids. We didn't try the mini golf. However we did talk to a group of kids who were playing in the area and they were having a great time. They told us the clubs and balls were free from the general store. Super cool. We also didn't make it to the movie night. It doesn't get dark until 8:45pm. My kids are in bed by 8. But I heard it was a big hit. We saw the set up and said, "Next year..." Speaking of quiet, our neighbors were probably about the coolest people. Most of the campsites around us were regulars. It was quiet by 10pm. Which was great again, as parents to 2 under three years of age, sleep is like currency. We would pay more to make sure we get a least 5 hours of sleep. Which we did every night. The game room was a little dated. Some of the machines didn't work but hey, it's camping. Go outside. Bathrooms were maintained several times a day. I can't praise enough for having a clean bathroom when you're tent camping all day. Sanctuary! The pond was gorgeous. We took several walks around the pond and saw a bunch of people catching fish and releasing them back. No lie, I saw a kid catch a fish using some fishing line and a stick with a worm. Granted when he pulled it out, he started yelling "help!", even he was surprised. It was beautiful. Even had a water feature in the middle of the pond. The general store is a really cute place. You can snag missed items. But it's not a big place. About 23 miles away is a Safeway. Pick up big missed items there. The store is great for grabbing ice cream or random small essentials. Oh! And this kind of amazed me. One of the gentleman who works at the campsite, wish we got his name, we saw him ferrying ice on his golf cart. They are so nice they even bring emergency ice over if you need it. I go camping several times a year since I was a kid and I have never seen that. That was so sweet. We also went down the nature walk trail. It was very nice. Just a lot of trees. We got pretty far and had to turn back. At some point it's no longer stroller friendly. Worth checking out. We went tent camping and the cabins were so adorable! I can't say much as I didn't go into one. Overall, this place was a winner! We will be back. See you all next time!

It has been awhile since we've been here. I reserved the group site online then heard there were two. So I called to inquire about the sites, no one answered the first time so I tried again. Within 3 weeks I called 10 times and emailed twice with NO response or answering the phone. Our spot ended up being ok due to the heat. The bathrooms were nasty, my friend had to ask to have them cleaned. The pool got pretty dirty but there was a lot of people. No more mini golf as they let that whole area go. So sad!! When I was there last they still could have made it work. This place has so much potential but, it's very dated and needs updates and better communication.

Two room cabin includes ceiling fans, lights, electrical outlets, chairs, tables and beds that are pretty comfortable.

My family of 4 (4.5yo & 14mo) stayed in a 2-room cabin over the 4th of July weekend with 4 other families despite the terrifying reviews online. We didn't experience any of those horrors, but we also weren't expecting the Ritz. The staff were friendly and helpful and doing their best despite some of the campers. Upon checkin, Pamela saw that we had a baby so made sure we got an extra shady site close to the bathroom (Red Fox). Some sites are a trek to the bathroom. The bathrooms were cleaned daily and there was always soap and toilet paper. They should probably put up signs reminding people of what's acceptable to flush because toilets would get clogged after the morning rush, but the staff always addressed those issues immediately. I really appreciated the staff who were all doing their best. Someone broke glass by the pool and one staff member stayed up all night cleaning out the pool so that we could use it the next day. The pool was busy but clean and totally usable. We got free snow cones at 2pm every day and the kids really enjoyed running around between our camp sites. Honestly, I was expecting the worst and experienced none of it. It's camping, it's not supposed to be fancy!

We have a 41 ft RV that's 13.5 ft tall. Are we going to be safe to get up there?

I have seen some very large rigs up there, you should be fine. The road is narrow getting up there, but large 5th wheels, diesel pushers, etc are there all the time.

Deer come to visit. Acorn woodpeckers are everywhere. It is near the river. That being said, the campground itself, particularly the RV sites, are in need of repair and upgrades. Many of the sites are not level. Quite a few had areas where RVs or trailers had bottomed out over and over, so deep ruts had developed into the pavement. Some had high inclines just to get into the site, so access could be a major headache depending on your rig. There are four camping sections. Some of the sections have cabins, along with RV sites. Each section has its own bathroom, except for the "C" loop. (The C loop bathroom has been closed for a long while and is being upgraded.) The sites are varied--a few have lots of room with no close neighbor. Others are packed tight together. So maybe look at the campground map when you book. They have water and 30-amp electrical hookups. No sewer hookups, but they do have a dump station. Some of the campers seem to be long term, and they have those portable RV dump tanks. They would drive back and forth with their portables--we were fairly close to the dump station, so it was a bit noisy and busy. Speaking of noisy, the campground is near Highway 101. You can see and hear the highway from camp. Highway 101 is on a ridge above the campground, and the traffic noise and truck brake noises seem to travel down. The river is nice, but there is not a lot of accessible area near the river. We walked down to the river, and there was a woman who was fishing and had her two dogs off leash. They were not friendly dogs. Also, it is very rocky. Not easy traveling. There are only two areas where you can set chairs down, and they are rather small areas. I didn't use the restroom facilities, but I did peek in, and they seemed clean enough, I guess. There were two showers, and three bathroom stalls (but one of the stalls was out of order.) Also of note: the restrooms require a code to enter, but none of our paperwork had the code written on it. We finally figured out that the gate code on the parking pass for our tow vehicle was also the bathroom code. Seems like they should write the code on the map of campground that they give you when you check in.

I had one of the sites that has a considerable incline to get into but easy to navigate and one in it's a nice site. My walks around haven't revealed much trash...some but not much. Some dog poo but not as much as I've seen at other campgrounds. Appears to be quite a few long term tenants but the few I've had interaction with were pleasant. Can hear the freeway but once inside and during the night it's been one of the quieter places I've been. I can actually sleep without my white noise machine. Havent used the facilities...peeked in one and it's "ok" but not sure if I'd use showers or laundry. But I really didn't look that close.

The only disappointment was that one of the three riverside tents was not next to the other two, even though we had booked the tents in 1 reservation. The rain didn't stop the kids from biking, scootering, fishing, etc. We made the best of it and everyone had a great time. The facilities were clean, the tents were spacious, the beds were very comfortable and the website accurately described all amenities. We paid extra for the early check in and it was worth it because it gave us more time to get settled in before heading to the river and maximizing our first day. I would recommend water shoes for adults and kids because the river is really rocky. We failed to bring water shoes and lost two pairs of sandals that floated down stream. I understand that holiday pricing comes at a premium, but the experience did not match the cost particularly when it comes to cleanliness. Cleanliness: We stayed in a cabin with an upstairs bunk. Upon arrival, we went upstairs and immediately noticed that the extra blanket and pillows had visible stains on the storage bag something that looked like dried cake batter or butter. There was also dirt and grass throughout the bunk area. This made us question whether this space had been properly cleaned before our stay. The communal bathroom area was even more concerning. There was a strong odor, and it appeared as though someone had either dropped something or vomited on the geoun, and it had clearly not been cleaned. It was extremely unpleasant. It was also disappointing to see that there is only one bathroom and shower area for the entire property, especially when the site appears to be nearly fully booked. The bathrooms get very busy. Additionally, there is only one family/baby changing area, and there was visible mildew growing in the shower. For nearly $400 per night (for two nights), we could have stayed at AutoCamp, which offers cleaner facilities, more amenities, and overall better value. The Cabin: To be fair, the cabin itself was comfortable and well designed. I would rate the cabin itself a 5/5. It was nicely insulated, the heated bed was a great touch, and having both heater and A/C was appreciated. However, we were surprised there was no full-length mirror in the cabin. Almost every glamping experience we've had includes one, so it was an odd omission. Bathrooms & Facilities: The bathrooms are very outdated and in need of a serious refresh. It would be helpful to take notes from Mendocino Grove they have truly perfected the glamping experience and set a high standard. Overall, the potential is there, but for the price point, cleanliness and shared facilities need significant improvement.

There's a fee to park inside the park. Think it was about $10. It gets busy during the weekends and spaces can be super limited if you come after 11am. We were with a toddler, so we stayed on the main flat trails that go through redwood groves. It is very shady and well trafficked trails. There are a few loops you can join together, and the circumference may be a 2-3 mile hike. But you can do however long you want it to be. Now the trails that elevate into the hills are much more involved. It can elevate to a 1300 foot gain which is pretty strenuous. I haven't tried those yet but it is on my list to try. But even the easy trails that one day, was still beautiful and relaxing. To majestic red bark trees with healthy ferns all on the ground cover, fallen trees to climb on, large rocks to hop on was just a nice jaunt especially with young kids. We brought a light lunch and refreshments and were able to run into a small area with picnic benches. Perfect way to end a few hours steeped in nature, without having to be totally in the wild. Great intro for those that aren't too versed (yet) and to get them exposed to nature, ecosystems and wildlife. Connect with the world amongst which you live with but rarely see. We reserved the river side campground and were pleased with the views. The on-site store is not a walk-in. It's someone at the counter and you point what you want to buy. 8 pounds of ice is $5. They have a coffee truck available only in the mornings. Bathrooms and showers are clean. There's a coin machine by the store to get quarters for shower usage. I recommend this campsite. It is unique and majestic.

The bathrooms were nice. private enough there was even a family stall but it was always full. The showers were really nice the first night they are completely private little rooms, they are spacious it's a coin shower but it was like $1.25 for five minutes the water was warm too. Night two however 2/3 showers were broken and the water wasn't as hot in the one that did worked. The camp people, workers whatever they're called were very nice, not overly strict or creeping around like they minded their own business which I appreciate. We had a large family campsite so it was pretty private next to the river and we could have five cars which was great. Overall as someone who hates camping I recommend this spot and I would go back if someone invited me.

I mean I have been born & raised in California so why on earth would I be shocked by drought conditions?! Well... We just came out of a drought and it's still early in the year w/o enough rain or snowpack but DAMN I really didn't expect it to be soooooo bad! Saying that I follow the news very closely so I have heard it is Lakes Mendicino, Sonoma and Folsom are drying up fast. Along with most of our reservoirs... I cannot comment on how beautiful this lake would be when full, I can't wait to come back in a few years after this drought and see this place in its glory! I do know people are still catching fish and enjoying the beauty of nature here. We met a couple of very friendly geese and an old fisherman who lived near here and shared fishing stories as well as facts about the lake and some of the rocks I was finding... All in all it was a nice stop on our roadtrip!
