The first time I went there (Concord office), the doctor had an emergency, and I had to wait over an hour to see him. The second time I went (Oct 2024), a 'tech' did the refraction evaluation (read the chart) and put in the eye drops to dilate my eyes. The doc came in, spent 10 minutes with me, and the charge to BCBS (which I have a vision plan for), was $485 PLUS they charged me $65 to do the refraction eval. Neither Medicare or BCBS with EyeMed coverage covered the $65. Never have I had to pay for an annual through insurance. It's ridiculous and exhausting, and expensive. If you're worried about the cost of eggs, worry instead about the ridiculous charges from doctors of all kinds. Based on other reviews, I'm going to find myself another group to go to. read more

I am very disappointed in the Lexington Eye Associates Sudbury location. My first visit was great but the second visit to get my contacts checked was a big let down. Dr. Gabriella seemed cold and annoyed that the prescription she prescribed me was not the most accurate. I thought they were too strong and we had to go down a level. She seemed like she was in a rush and trying to get me out the door even though she mentioned it was a quiet day. In addition, she didn't seem to want to answer my questions and when she did, it felt condescending. Since the lenses were too strong, they needed to order new lenses for me to try. I am traveling for work the next week, and I have mentioned this to them because I requested for a weeks worth of lenses to bring to work. Dr. Gabriella did not want to give me the lenses she ordered and her reasoning wasn't because it was the wrong level but because she "couldn't give it out because it is just for the office". One of the front desk works was very nice and called another office to see if they have spares for me. This was bizarre to me because why can one office give lenses out but another can't? I really had high hopes for this place. So the second visit was disappointing. I hope it gets better. read more

Used Lexington Eye for many years (over 20). May, 2024 appointment for eye exam, I was late by 10 minutes, I called and explained this. Was told had to reschedule. Next opening OCTOBER. I would not wait five months for anything let a lone a missed eye exam. I don't even wait in check-out lines. Needless to say a different company was seen and Lexington Eye was informed and told good-bye/. A business relationship of decades should result in some level of service above a first time walk-in. As an aside, liked my doctor very much. My wife all but hated her. Go figure. Now I'm looking for a replacement. Need laser surgery. Terrible experience. Saw an optometrist for a routine eye exam. Was told they saw something and I needed to see an ophthalmologist at the practice. Ophthalmologist said I had glaucoma in both eyes and needed surgery ASAP. Was told "you can get a second opinion but they're going to say the exact same thing I do." Got a second opinion at Mass Eye and Ear (they have a satellite location in Lexington so there's no need to go into Boston). Testing equipment was WAY newer and the doctor took the time to explain what was going on and what my treatment options were. Turns out I do NOT have glaucoma. Grateful to have the #1 eye hospital in New England in such close proximity. read more

Beware of shady billing practices. If insurance doesn't pay out because there's a glitch. They don't give you any time to fix it. And they send it to collections immediately. Without any warning. My daughter went there for an annual eye exam. She has near slightness and is wearing glasses. The nurse did a refraction test. The doctor talked to her for about less than 5 mins and said she may have crossed eyes. The doctor or the billing department then billed it as a diagnostic visit instead of an eye exam visit because there are findings in the exam and the doctor recorded the result. I have never heard of this kind of things where billing depend on the result of the exam not the exam itself. The exam is the same, but based on results the billing is different. As a result the insurance company refuse to cover the cost because it is not an eye exam anymore. Maybe I am just ignorant. Is this how medical claims work? We do physicals every year and do all kinds of blood tests, exams and vaccines. We are never charged anything other than copay. It is covered by the insurance no matter what the result is in the exam/lab test etc. And yes, the family physician need to record anything he or she finds in the visit with no extra charge. The practice of Lexington Eye makes no sense to me. Extended talk to billing department makes no differences. Disappointing. We have been using this place for a few years and it is an expensive place but no issues like this before. read more

I never really had a great experience with Lexington eye. Below are a few of my negative experiences: -A few of their doctors have told me to only order contacts from them because they are the cheapest. I had one doctor follow me to reception and pretty much made sure that I ordered contacts through them. It was a pretty uncomfortable experience. - I had an eye issue and the doctor proceeded to talk down to me until the end of the appointment. - My appointment was always late. I had to wait at least 20-30 minutes every time. I've been a patient here for over 10 years and now I am finally cutting the chord. I would NOT recommend Lexington Eye Associates. read more

I can't speak to the adult side, but we had an excellent visit for my son. After reading these reviews I was so worried that we would have to wait a long time and I would have a very stressed out kid. Not the case. He was seen right on time. The nurse was absolutely fantastic. My son always freaks about the eye drops and she was so patient with him. And the doctor was also fantastic. I have been a patient at Lexington Eye for many years but I will be looking elsewhere - The wait is ALWAYS 45mins to an hour. Even if they take you in right away, you end up sitting somewhere else or in the exam room for 40-80 minutes. - I saw Dr. Liao for an urgent appointment. She spent 15 minutes with me after 50 minutes of waiting, and was so patronizing and rude that I'm still fuming 6 weeks later. Why would I let someone speak to me like that? - Dr. Keival has always been incredibly friendly and helpful, but at this point that is not enough to keep me at this practice. - The Contacts and glasses at this facility are much more expensive than other places, and there is a lot of pressure to buy them here. read more

I agree with a recent reviewer that Lexington Eye Associates has been trying too hard to bill customers for no reason. I went in for my routine eye exam, dilating pupils and all that. After the assistant completed everything, the doctor came in and did a retina inspection. She said she suspected some condition that she suggested me to follow up. She documented that in my record. I paid my $10 copayment, and made some future appointments. Few weeks later I got a bill for more that a $100. I asked their billing department what that was for. I already paid my copay for the eye exam. She said the moment the doctor suspected you had a condition that needed follow-up, it turned into diagnostic. It feels like you go into a garage for a "free" 5 point inspection for your car, and then the garage charges you a hundred bucks for pointing out that there may be something wrong with your car after the free inspection. What is the "free" about? Only if they don't find anything wrong? What is the routine eye exam about that the copay covers? Only if they find nothing wrong? The billing person told me that even if they find you have dry eyes, it is a diagnostic. Aren't they trying too hard to bill? read more

I don't recommend this place or avoid Dr. Liao. I have been sent to this place for urgent care with possibility of vision loss. I have waited in a line with regular patients for more than 2 hours. The nurses were nice and were trying to help me expedite. HOWEVER, Dr. was very rude and she said if you come to urgent care this is the wait one should expect so don't complain. EXCUSE ME? I don't think this is the professional way to talk with patients who has been waiting for hours and worrying about she maybe lose her vision permanently. read more

Poorly run practice that cares only about your money. For several times I was given the wrong eye glasses prescription. Lost money because of buying glasses with this wrong prescription. No apology was offered. They still had a nerve trying to bill me for several corrective visits, which by the way resulted with inaccurate prescription again. Also after billing insurance with wrong code they try to put a burden of paying the bill on a patient. I do not recommend this unprofessional practice and will not return myself. If there was a minus star I would definitely click on it I have been a patient of Lexington Eye for years. The past two years waiting times have been beyond tolerable. Dr McCoy is an extremely talented surgeon and opthromoligist . Last year my wait time was over 2 hours after my appointment time. I spoke to Dr McCoy regarding this trying to be helpful if she was unaware of a possible systemic problem in appointment scheduling since many other people in the waiting room were upset concerning the wait time. She noted my concern. Now for this year. This past week I arrived at my 10:30am appointment 10 minutes early. A technician took me at 10:40am who was pleasant and efficient. After inserting the fluid to enlarge my pupils for the Dr she informed me the Dr was behind 1 hour and there were4 patients in front of me. She suggested I leave the office to do errands or whatever and if it was sooner she would call me on my cell . i was to return at noon. She called about 11:45am and said I should return at 12:30pm because she was further behind. I returned at 12:30 to find I needed to wait possibly another half hour since there was still one patient ahead of me. At around 1:15pm I complained to the front desk something was definitely wrong and I wanted an explanation. She went in back and reported I was to be seen by the Dr right away. The room was being wiped down. 15 minutes later I was still waiting so I walked by the reception desk and said goodbye and you had better not bill for this. She said we certainly will not. Many other patients checking in were told the same line of bull. This is totally unacceptable behavior for a professional office and should be dealt with with severity. Some patients took the day off from work and had to leave to make there next appointment . Elderly people in many cases can not indure this type of treatment. It ruined my complete day since I had other important plans . Think of all the other patients ruined days over three hours from the time of an appointment and still not seeing the Dr is selfish, cruel and absolutely intolerable. I love Dr McCoy but not that much to continue my many years with Lexington Eye. read more

Great eye doctors but their customer service and office experience is terrible. I made an appointment for my annual visit a year in advance - I found out 6 months later that the appointment in their system was completely different from what they wrote on my card - no one could explain why. I couldn't make that time due to travel plans based around the appointment that I thought I had. Choices were either wait another 4 months to see same doc at same location or go somewhere much less convenient 2 months later. I asked to speak to a manager and was told they would call back - of course nobody did, so I had to make 2 more calls to get this sorted out including long hold times The previous time I needed to reschedule my appointment at short notice due to a change in jobs - I had to push it back 6 months to a completely different location and new doctor. Sub-optimal but understandable. However, I was told they would put me on a list and send me texts when appointments became available at short notice at my preferred location - I never received a single text about an appointment. I would switch providers but I love my doc and have some unusual issues that require continuity in care. I just wish it wasn't so difficulty to get to see him. read more

I'm just going to list a few issues I had with this clinic that I think may be helpful to others making a decision of where to take their children. Dr. Jennifer Mullon was HIGHLY recommended by my son's PCP, but she was unavailable, so we were scheduled with one of the other pediatric ophthalmologists. 1. Staff was unfriendly. I am used to friendly staff/providers working in pediatric healthcare. I really am shocked by the unfriendly atmosphere. No one seemed to enjoy their job. I was pretty much in the dark as to what anyone's role was and it seemed pretty disorganized. (Just to mention: A few of the staff were kind: the ladies on the PEDIATRIC check-in desk and the younger tech with blonde hair.) 2. No communication to the parent. I was not told at any point during the entire appointment (which lasted 2+ hours, including dilation) the reason for the tests during the many exams, what the outcome was, and what the recommendation was. No joke. 3. Doctor was unfriendly. While she was giving the exam, I kindly voiced my concerns for my son's eyes and she gave a short and very vague response. No information was given as to what she thought was going on after looking at his eyes. No diagnosis, no summary, nothing. She just told my son that his eyes are fine and he gets to pick out a toy and promptly scooted us out of the room after spending about 5-10 minutes with us. I guess I'll contact his PCP to get some clarification on what they think may be going on. I would expect that, even if there is nothing concerning, someone would at least spend a minute to give advice and a summary of the visit. I hope this helps patients/ caregivers while choosing where to go. I wouldn't go back. This was the Concord location. I cannot speak for the other locations. read more

I want to give 0 star if I can. I made an appointment for my daughter's eye exam with Dr Doshi. Her annual exam should be 100% covered by her vision insurance but they billed my medical insurance instead. I called the billing department and they said Dr Doshi found medical issue for my daughter's eye and saying they need to bill as a medical. At the appointment Dr Doshi mentioned my daughter might have hypertropia that she couldn't find last year but nothing to worry about, nothing we need to do now so I said ok. They didn't even spend extra time for that it was literally just an annual eye exam for a new glasses. If you found an issue you need to ask to make a separate appointment for that issue. You shouldn't just bill my medical insurance for medical exam. Billing department person was just yelling at me they are not changing anything because my daughter has medical issue. When I had an appointment for myself with different doctor, Dr said she found something and asked me to make a separate appointment for an extra exam. So i told billing department why Dr Doshi doesn't ask me to make an another appointment for that and they said we are talking about your daughter's issue not yours, it's a different case! But you guys are in the same office? You need to inform your patient if you're going to bill my medical insurance. I have separate vision insurance And I didn't expect any extra charge for that. Now I have to pay extra 200 dollars for nothing. I called the office and asked them to delete my medical insurance information and they denied and hung up on me. My review covers an issue that seems to be common among the more critical reviews: the office is large and busy enough that the support staff either cannot or does not follow the progress of patient contact on any one question, wasting both their and their patient's time. And for whatever reason, whether it's the frustration of the above or not, some of the support staff are overtly rude to their patients. Example: My ophthalmologist (Dr. Umlas), and my retinal specialist (Dr. Baker), are stellar. This review does not reflect the care I've received from them; I'd give them more than five stars if I could. The former saw me essentially immediately for one of the only 'immediate response' ocular issues I've ever had (it turned out to be a minuscule retinal hemorrhage that resolved on its own), and the latter has been my retinal specialist for years once we determined I had a common progressive condition in my 20s. Once I spoke to her, the lead tech at this office, Andrea, was also fantastic. After a recent comprehensive eye exam with Dr. Umlas -- during which everything was found to be good (either healthy or in a stable state) -- I reached out over email with a question I mentioned I might follow up on during my exam. (Essentially, as I'm aging, I'm noticing little 'twinkles' in my vision more; often they're benign, but because they can be a sign of impending retinal detachment, it's essential to check on and act on them quickly.) Thus began the Game of Telephone. For a few days (I believe) I didn't hear anything. So I called the local office (not Concord) to make sure they received the email, since sometimes emails over web forms fail to send. They said they did, and /now/ said they would forward the message onto Dr. Umlas, which they apparently hadn't done yet, as well as this call. Ok. I thanked them for this, emphasizing that the message go straight to Dr. Umlas since my recent exam and knowledge of my history made him one of the only people who could answer this question with the necessary context. Another day or two passes. I then receive a voicemail from a very concerned tech in /this/ office (who I think may have been Andrea?), and instead of covering the questions I asked, focusing on asking me to call back at my earliest convenience since she thinks I should be seen ASAP. It was unclear to me whether she knew about my well visit or history, but it didn't seem like it? (I'm not sure if the Concord office had the other office's full well visit records yet.) At this point, I believe it's been a week since I emailed. I call Concord back, indicating that I'm returning a call back but really just want my two questions run by Dr. Umlas (or possibly a tech since the second question was simply my interocular pressure reading). This call with support staff was . . . not as supportive as I would have hoped. On top of being brusque, which I understand from large busy offices, she /repeatedly/ talked over me, and seemed more interested in making it clear to me that verbose or detailed emails will /inherently/ be seen as anxious, and that it was essentially on me that they thought I should be seen. I'd no interest in playing a Blame Game, which made this feel more like a CYA (Cover Your A--) move than valuable feedback. On the plus side, she said she would forward this straight to Dr. Umlas, and /was/ willing to have someone tell me my interocular pressure. Apparently this change hadn't been communicated to the techs, as I received /four/ phone calls and two voicemails from Andrea this morning. Yikes! Thankfully, once I touched base with her things smoothed out considerably, and Andrea herself was a pleasure to talk to; I really felt heard and understood by her. And she's now keeping my request on her desk, so that it doesn't pass hands again and cause more of this. But it sounds like the Concord office doesn't have a clear way of indicating ownership or progress with a patient's concerns, and that can cause a lot more Game of Telephone and returning to square one than is useful for either the office or the patient. Once you have a tech on the phone -- presuming you have a good rapport with them -- see if you can have them take ownership of your contact. It'll save you a lot of trouble and stress. read more

Update Next day after posting this review office manager Erin, called to apologize for my visit. She was very polite, attentive and professional. I could appreciate her interest in hearing what happened. She also mentioned that she had spoken to Dr. William Boger and he would be calling. So far several days have passed and no call from Dr. Boger. I explained to Erin my concerns, as a parent you want your child to spend more time with the doctor than the technicians. I am left with the feeling that doctor went by the technician results as he literally spent no more than 5 minutes with my daughter. So again if you are a parent I would not recommend this office. 1. Not a warm place for kids. 2. You spend more time with technicians than with the doctor. I will be seeking a second opinion. Erin office manager gets 5 stars. read more

My 90 year old mother just called for an appointment with her eye doctor but didn't get past the receptionist. She told the receptionist that her eye has been completely bloodshot, pure red, for three days with today being even worse. She was told that a technician would call her back either today or tomorrow. I think this office is a wonderful office I don't see why there are so many complaints about wait time. I have seen some really horrible reviews for different practices but I feel with these reviews some of them are wrong.. it does take time at any eye doctor since I've been a child going to different eye doctors there's always a good amount of time you have to wait. When going to a doctors office or a hospital you have to wait. You shouldn't give someone a bad review just because you have to wait.. my daughter will be needing surgery to correct her eyes and I wouldn't have any other doctor do it. After waiting 2 months for an appt I got a call saying that they needed to reschedule my appt because they had double booked that time. I then had to wait another 2 weeks for an appt. I got my daughter's eyes checked by Dr Broger and 3 months later she failed an eye exam at school. I took her back to see another doctor and was informed that her prescription was too high and that it was completely wrong. I am not sure what kind of eye exam was done at Lexington eye . Since most of it was done by the assistant maybe she was the problem. Anyway I am never going back to this place read more

Dr. Liao of Lexington Eye spent most of my exam chastising and humiliating me after she came into the exam room that I had been sitting alone in while waiting for her, and saw my mask covering only my mouth. I had briefly lowered my mask below my nose in order to clear my foggy glasses. Not only did she scold me like a child but ran out of the room only to bring back the poor woman who had done my preliminary exam and scolded her as well. I was lectured and talked down to by Dr. Liao, and while she is clearly suffering extreme anxiety over her daily and repeated exposure to patients and potentially the virus, this treatment of me, as well as a staff member in my presence, was inappropriate and unprofessional. When Dr. Liao examined me, in a robotic manner, she used only hand motions and did not speak when she came within 6 feet of me. I take every precaution, within reason, including getting vaccinated, in an effort to avoid getting sick or contaminating others and did not deserve this. read more

I have been a long-time patient at Lexington Eye, and like many others, I have good and not-so-good experiences. Not-so-good experiences include not knowing that they moved, and having a scheduled surgery rescheduled on short notice. These, however, are small issues. Recently, I had cataract surgery and was tremendously impressed with the whole process. I have had cataracts for quite a while but could not have them fixed because of chemotherapy treatments I was on. Finally, I was given the go-ahead and jumped at it. At first, I grumbled about the sheer number of appointments, but soon learned why they were necessary. I chose to have the surgery done at their Waltham facility, and I'm happy with that choice. What really worked well was the information that was given to me before, during, and after surgery. I had clear, written instructions beforehand. I had to pick up three different kinds of eyedrops, which are expensive, but I was given very clear instructions on their use. On the day of the surgery, every single staff member was friendly, kind, and clear in their explanations of what was happening. I was a bit anxious about the recovery period--how long would I have fuzzy vision? Could I read? Could I drive? I live alone, so these are major issues. As it turned out, having one eye done was like stepping into a time machine and going back 25 years to a period before I wore bifocals. My vision in the fixed eye was 20-20 again, which means I don't really need glasses except to read. Furthermore, I had no pain or even anything that I could call discomfort except for the needle stick when they gave me the sedative. The doctor (Kieval) called me that evening to see how I was doing, which also gave me a good feeling. At the time of surgery, I was given a chart that explained the eye drop routine for every week for the next four weeks. Although it requires a lot of handwashing, the results are worthwhile. I'm having the other eye done in two weeks, and I must say I feel no anxiety about it. read more
