Lew's is a traditional and very good seafood spot in North Hills outside Northwest Philly. For almost 60 years it has been serving up dishes & meals from the deep to take away from their store or eat in their adjoining Dockside Pub. Right now during the pandemic, most people are choosing takeout. And there is a lot to choose from - including weekly & daily specials. For my first meal of the new year, I felt like eating some seafood and called Lew's to order their Bang Bang Shrimp with Bay fries and potato salad. All were ready when I got there. I really like their Bang Bang Shrimp but I do add hot sauce to it to give it even more of a 'bang, bang,' Lew's is very solid overall and it's hard to go wrong here with whatever you order in my opinion. read more

The good thing about this place is that they make the majority of their menu items from scratch, and that includes the fried mozzarella sticks. Everything I had was fresh. My only complaint about the food is some of the fried items just need a little salt and/or pepper in the breading. Service is quaint and snappy. It's just what you want and expect, friendly enough to make you feel good but not intrusive. The bar area reminds me of a dive, but it's a Dockside Pub...the ambience is totally perfect for a crab shack and there's no reason to get all fancy just to eat some seafood. The crab legs were cooked perfectly and tasted delish! Shrimp basket is a little pricey but it's seafood and it's fresh, so I guess I shouldn't whine about it, I mean really, if I can't afford to go out to eat then don't go out to eat, AMIRIGHT? Definitely give this place a try if you are in the area and looking for something that isn't pizza, cheeseteaks or Chinese. I have lived in the area for years and seem compelled to keep trying Lews. Every time they never fail to disappoint. The food is bland and over priced. Most recently I tried to support local business and get there takeout. I was met at the door with a "if you didnt pre order we are too busy " statement. I really wanted to know if they had a particular crab leg in-stock because I wanted 4lbs. I was asking about the process of ordering and then picking up after they're cooked because i didnt want them sitting while i travel to pick up. Again the attitude mixed with the generic flavor has assured me to go to my favorite seafood spot this local guy doesn't deserve my money. read more

Not sure why there are so many bad reviews. Maybe because these folks don't understand that fish is a delicate cuisine that shouldn't be over seasoned and that is part of the reason they offer dips and sides. I was very pleased with the clam strips. Brought me back to New Jersey summers as they were fried to perfection. The linguini with clam sauce tops any Italian restaurants I've been to this area and that's coming from someone who is a first generation Italian. Yes there was a wait time for the food but like an restaurant that is reasonable especially when they are cooking your food fresh. Don't pay attention to the folks that reviewed this place with anything having to do with timing or taste. Since Lew's was sold and new ownership has taken over things haven't been as great as they once were. The food is okay.... Nothing spectacular. The owner is genuinely a great guy. This review is for the male waiter/bartender. He is extremely rude, snotty and just downright disrespectful. Our family and friends have stopped going there because of this mans behavior and attitude. We would always have dinner parties almost weekly but the disrespect from this one gentleman is not acceptable. The bar atmosphere used to be neighborhood gatherings. We've met many of decent people and had plenty of good times and laughs. Those people no longer want to meet here because of this gentleman. His behavior is like he's 5 years old throwing a temper tantrum. If he must work there.... Can he work in the store or kitchen? He's definitely the reason why so many people in the neighborhood will not patronize here. Feel very bad for the owner because like I stated earlier he really is a decent, hardworking man. read more

The food was delicious and fresh. Remember as a kid my parents stopping there for seafood (50 years ago) didn't know it was still there till my neighbor mentioned it. I'm so glad he did. The fried shrimp were large and meaty, the flounder tasted fresh and the scallops were cooked to perfection . Even the Cole slaw was creamy and delicious. Nothing was over breaded. The fried flounder and crab cakes were so deep fried the fish was hardly in the meal. The place inside is awful to eat. Looks like a back room for employees. We spent 40.00 on crap and its ashame because my boyfriend saved up to take me to have seafood. We wasted our money and I will call them because its robbery. Disappointing. I was hoping to find a good seafood place in our new neighborhood so I stopped in here for some seafood takeout. I can only report on what I had, which was fried clams w/tartar sauce, french fries, and coleslaw. Unfortunately, the clams were rubbery and tough to chew. The amount of batter and the frying was good. They had a good color and the batter was not too light and not too heavy. If the quality of the clams had only been better! The tartar sauce was just okay. The fries were done all the way through but they had no color to them at all. The coleslaw was very stringy and tough. Old cabbage maybe? I don't know, but it was inedible. I think they charge you extra for the tartar sauce if you don't get a platter, which seems a little odd. Why not just factor tartar sauce and ketchup into the price? I probably won't be back. I'll continue my search for good seafood but so far I haven't had much luck. read more

First time I was there I ordered the fried seafood combo, which was a disappointment . Yesterday I ordered the broil seafood combo and was equally disappointed. For 20 bucks I got a small piece of flounder, 4 medium shrimp and 4 small scallops. Onion rings and Cole Slaw. The food was tasteless. The onion rings tasted the same coating that was used for fish was used on the rings. Seafood had no taste and for what I paid should have been served just a little more. Been coming here for years, because there are no other options for fried seafood at all in a large radius, that I know of. It's always disappointing but I keep going back to get a fix. The fried oysters are good, as is the flounder. The shrimp and clams are angry little nubs of vinyl. The two kinds of crab cake are each a thick neutrally-flavored caulk entombed within a protective shell of glutinous breading. One has more minced bell pepper in the mix than the other, so that's some flavor there, sort of. There is almost no detectable flavor of crabmeat. Any reviewer who expresses satisfaction with these crab cakes needs to be introduced to an actual crab cake, which doesn't need to be great but should, by tradition, be made of crab. These folks range from pleasant to brusque, with a clear and calm attitude of "we've been here forever and you have no choice, do you, so shut up and sit down." If I had an option, I would never come here again. Yet I return. Life is sad sometimes but we endure. read more

One of the worst meals I've ever had. First, It showed up an hour late after pre-ordering early in the day. The clam chowder tasted like boxed potatoes mixed with cream and canned minced clams. Not one fresh ingredient present. The crab cake was a ball of processed crab mush barely seared with no flavor that stuck to the top of my mouth. The linguine with clams was so over cooked the pasta was mushy and oily and zero fresh ingredients. It tasted like canned clams were cooked with canola oil and garlic powder and served over pasta that spent 10 minutes too long in the water. $82 including tip and I'm throwing 90% of it away. read more

This is the closet seafood spot to me. Do not order crab cakes thinking your are getting anything similar to a crab cake though. The deviled crab is some crabmeat and filling puréed and fried and the imperial is just one step up from the deviled cake! They DO NOT have lump crab cake just to stop the confusion. I did get Dungeness crab legs and paid $30 but the amount I got and the flavor was great! There is also a small bar where the drinks were not badly priced for while I waited. They have a fantastic relaxed atmosphere. The server we had was amazing. And the food great quality for a good fair price. The Decor is very unassuming tables chairs Etc. The decorations none were notable. However all of that add to an atmosphere of just come in with friends relax have some drinks have a good time. It's a good place for kids noise isnt an issue. the atmosphere is forgiving so if you're coming with kids who are learning proper behavior for a restaurant it's a great learning place. More on the food their crab legs are delicious yummy good. I really like that you could get it all a cart crab legs then sides. Unless you buy what you're actually going to eat and not waste money on the Frills if you don't want them. We also had the fried scallops and they were done perfectly. I went with my kids it was our first time there. We are looking forward to the next time we get to go back I truly hope that the consistency and food atmosphere and service continues. My fiance and I look for good places to eat every weekend, for we take her elder parents out to dine mostly three times out of the month. We especially like good seafood and don't always like the chains. Lew's was recommended, although for the life of me I don't see why. Maybe there take out is whats is recommended, don't know! The waitress was serving by herself and with the tables full, she couldn't remember orders with her moving from table to table and seemed to get confused. She took our order for drinks, (tea,coffee, soda) not booze and appetizers. Even though a large family came in ten minutes after us and got there drinks order filled before us, and it's been more than 20 minutes for us, just a little concerned. We finally starting receiving appetizers and drinks piecemeal, tea took 30 minutes...wow! Finally after 45 minutes and eating our before meal and drinks, we asked if there was a problem. She came back 10 minutes later and said she forgot to put our order through and she would do so. We declined and asked for the check for we were leaving, she apologized profusely and gave a cock a maimey story about having a concussion and forgetting things. My fiance said we weren't going to pay and asked to see the manager. By the way check was for $21 for terrible service. They should have more than 1 waitress!!! read more

August 29,2020 was my first visit to Lew's which was recommended by a friend. I placed an order. When I first received my order I look in the bag and two orders were boxed together. I returned and explained these were separate orders. A senior woman instructed me, next say each item is separate. A young man took my bag and went in the back. He came out and handed me two bags. We back home and I ate some of my 1/2 fried flounder and my god sister ate her 1/2 dozen shrimp and was going to save her fried stuffed flounder for dinner. I returned home. Then my god sister phoned me to tell me her dinner wasn't in the bag. I phoned Lew's and was told to come in and get a replacement dinner. Upon arrival, I phoned to see if the dinner was ready, The lady who answered the phone told me her cooks said they put the dinner in with the shrimp. I explained my god sister ate her shrimp and I ate my flounder at the same time and when she finished the box was empty. well the lady rudely said i will give you your money back and i needed to find another place to purchase my seafood. I replied okay I would be right in for my refund. when inside again she rudely said I'll get your refund and find another place to purchase your seafood in the future. Well needless to say I would not be purchasing from Lew's seafood no matter how good the food is with such rude treatment from the staff. Ordered the oysters. They were terrible! The oysters were watery while fried, when I didn't ask for fried oysters in the first place. It didn't taste like they cleaned it or even squeezed some lemon on it. I also got glazed carrots on the side. Didn't taste like they added seasoning. The crabcakes are shaped like fish sticks and are filled with a mousse or paste that does not taste like crab and the mashed tasted like cardboard. This use to be one of my family's favorite seafood spots in the area. Having been there in years. Decided to check out the place again and get some seafood. The servers attitude wasn't the best from the start and just got worse and more tables were sat. The service was slow, the food was decent except I found a blue hair in mine. Went someone in my party mentioned it to the server, they removed it from the plate, said "it's purple, so it's probably mine," threw it on the floor and didn't even clear the plate. No apology or any acknowledgement. Couldn't tell you the next time I will think of it if I want seafood but they do have a nice takeout business as well. I'll probably just stick to that. I saw that a friend was here and I decided to try it out on his recommendation but I was disappointed. I ordered the seafood combo ( broiled shrimp, scallops and flounder ) I needed to search the ocean to find the flounder and it wasn't tasty when I finally found the minnow sized piece. Plus I checked the menu online and the way they show it it looks like the price for that is $16.99 with one side,unfortunately when you look at the printed takeout menu it shows$16.99 for just the fish and add one side for $3.50. Very disappointed that I went here. They can't even hold the fishing rod for Bralows seafood ( 8000 Bustleton ave... now THAT is some good seafood. I have trepidations about writing a good review because I dont wany anyone else to find out about this place! My wife and I have been going here for the past several years. They simply have the freshest seafood you can get in a landlubbing area. Our favorite is to go there on a Saturday night around 4:30 before it gets too full (there are only a few tables there). They have an all you can eat crab legs, fries and a pitcher of beer for 40 bucks. Every time the crab legs have been huge, fresh and perfectly prepared. We even had carrot cake...which i think was the best part. We deemed this a good place to go in the summer for some dockside food. Our waitress was kinda like the kind you find at a truck stop....she was tired...she let us know....but she was a character...so okay. THEN it ALL WENT SOUTH...... We got the bill paid in cash.....tipped 20%. good or bad service we tip decent always. Waitress takes the money...we are set..keep the change. Go to drive off.....I hear someone yelling.....it's dark and misting out....it's the waitress telling us we jyped her. The bill was 50....we gave her 60.....3 20 dollar bills. She only had 2 of them. My BF had handed it right to her.... she said she folded it up and hadn't counted it till after we left. We were sure we had given her the money...since we came with 3 20's and a 10 and 7 singles. we checked us to make sure. I told her I would pull back in and wait till she went back to check. She came out and still doubted us. Said it was okay but she was going to have to pay the difference. I am all about karma ,,,and dont need any enemies in my new neighborhood. Came for a family dinner, ordered some appetizers. Having been in service industries myself, I am always polite to others. Our waitress was so emphatically rude, despite our kind attitudes. She couldn't even bother to refill drinks. There was only one other table eating, but after waiting about 30 minutes for our appetizer and drinks, we asked when it would be ready. The waitress literally scoffed and said "UH, when it's DONE" and walked away before I could even place a drink order. I have never had a waitress be so blatantly rude, especially with a party with an expensive check. Lucky for her, we aren't as rude as she is and left a decent tip, despite her nasty attitude. What a happy place to stumble upon! My husband and I were looking for something to eat as we drove through the area and spotted Lews. We went in and saw all the freshly breaded seafood ready to fry! We ordered a flounder hoagie, and a side if macaroni salad. The flounder hoagie was so so good. They also had all kinds of beers you could mix and match which we always appreciate.
