I hired Lewis Piano Movers to move a piano from a home to a church. On the day of the move, they text me around 1:30 to say that they are running late can they do the move on Friday. I say no because the homeowner would not be available. We set-up the move for Saturday. they text me on Saturday and say that they should arrive at the homeowner's house around 1:30 pm. They later text me and say that they have arrived. I say "Great, it should take you about 45 minutes to arrive at the church with the piano". that's when it's discovered that they are NOT on my move, but someone else's. The person asks me what move this is, I tell him, and he said that he thought that move was scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday) or Tuesday. I tell him that it was scheduled for Saturday after 11:00 am and that a church would not have a piano moved in on Sunday. I asked them can it be done that day and they say no, so I tell them to just forget it. The person apologized and said that it was an office error. No one from the office reached out to apologize, make explanation or try to make it right. I interpret that to mean that they really don't care!!!!!! If the scheduling error had not been discovered, not telling how long both I and the homeowner would have been waiting for the move to happen. I initially had high expectations for this company. Price: - very reasonable; I highly doubt I would have been able to get a higher quality team for the same/better cost. They gave me a quote of $425. I compared to one another company that also had good reviews and yelp, and got a quote of $550 from them. However, I found out later that Lewis intended to charge me $525, and I think the $425 was actually a mistake. (My job was expensive because it involved going up 15 steps, and had to move 70 miles.) - they do NOT ask for tips. I recently had an experience where a moving company I found on Craigslist gave me a quote, upon which I made the decision to hire them, and then later asked for additional tips for each mover, which I thought was dishonest business practices. The moving itself: Three guys moved a baby grand piano up a narrow staircase of a townhouse, which is no easy job, I assure you. But they did it successfully, so I think accomplishing THAT in itself deserves at least 4 stars. The move did leave several scuff marks on the walls, which is probably unavoidable, and I was already planning on re-painting that wall, anyway. Communication: The response for the initial quote was slow. I think it took them a week to get back to me, through yelp. The response to my email asking for confirmation was also slow. But they were great with everything within 24 hours of the actual move (i.e., calling 30 minutes before arrival, being professional, etc.). You may find it helpful to know that they don't set the schedule until the evening before the move, so you will know what day they move will happen but you won't know what time until kind of the last minute. read more

Terrible and rude! Van refused to return any phone calls after Robert, the other owner, changed the price of the delivery while he was driving to pick up the refrigerator. Five days earlier, I emailed them the item to be picked up, a "42" stainless steel refrigerator", (they move non-piano items) and Robert told me he had never heard of a refrigerator that big. It's not an uncommon size. Before quoting me a price five days earlier, no one at Lewis Piano Movers bothered to actually find out how heavy or tall a 42" refrigerator is. Amazing. Nor did anyone ever ask me to provide the weight or height of the fridge. Nor did anyone bother to call the appliance store where it was to be picked up and ask them how much it weighed, etc. Yet they blamed ME for not volunteering the specs....I did not know the specs but would have been happy to find out and provide it to them, had they asked. No one ever asked. But they did whine and complain and bellyache about how heavy it was during the move. Um.....these guys are PIANO movers. Pianos are extremely heavy, especially the baby grands, so a refrigerator should be par for the course. I would never recommend them to move anything. They called me a "crook" for wanting to pay the agreed-upon price that they emailed me before the job started, and then Van Lewis texted me the incredibly offensive phrase, "smd" (suck my d*ck) when I texted them to produce their DC license number. I was shocked. I have never heard of any company owner, or even the staff, speaking to a customer that way. I asked them to apologize, but they responded by saying I should "apologize for being a crook". Again, my "crime" is I wanted them to honor their original price. They tried to say "smd" was a "typo". I don't think so. After I repeatedly asked for their license number, they continued to get more and more hostile, defensive, and incredibly rude. Stay far far away from Lewis Piano Movers, or Van Lewis Movers, as they sometimes call themselves. They did a great job moving the piano quickly without scuffing our walls/floors and kept the piano properly covered to protect it. There was a miscommunication with how many steps were expected at the delivery site but they were accommodating and understanding. The rate was also very reasonable. Bad customer service when he says it was my problem, not theirs. Company owner on the phone was disrespectful and only coached the delivey team to repair the piano after I threatened to not pay. Damaging the piano during the set-up is not the piano owners problem. Do not use these folks. Initially we had asked them for an afternoon slot for the move anytime after midday, although they said this would be fine, very late in the day, they called to say they could only do early morning 8am. This was frustrating, whilst they charge quite a bit, they work towards their own schedule and fit you in when it's appropriate for them, rather than please customers. I am so disappointed. My piano was damaged to the tune of $1300. The bigger problem is I have been trying to get paperwork from this company for six weeks. My move was from Dallas to Virginia. I paid Steinway Dallas $1700 to do the move. Steinway had Keyboard Carriage pick it up Oct 8, 2018. My piano was lost until Dec 7, 2018, when I learned from Steinway Van Lewis had my piano. I received my piano on January 15, 2019, and I was charged for 4 months of storage and another $825. I should have never tipped these guys. Also, forget getting any paperwork. I hold Steinway Dallas/Plano responsible for the move. I paid twice basically, and my piano was also damaged. I'm asking Van Lewis for paperwork, and I get only a run around and blocked by these guys on FB. Somebody got paid twice. Eyes wide open! read more

The job is to move a 7'6 semi concert grand from MD to VA. I got 3 other quotes and they were higher, one of them about twice as much as Lewis. Throughout the move communication was excellent. They called half an hour before arrival at the origin and an hour before the destination. Lewis is an experienced mover, from the techniques I see them employ. The move went smoothly and they knew exactly what to do, from coming up the 5 steps before entering the house to putting on the legs of the piano and the castor guards. The piano was wrapped and it did not touch the walls or doorframe at anytime. I will use them again. read more

Hired Lewis Piano Movers to move a grand piano. Before the move, provided extensive detail and multiple pictures that documented a flight of stairs at my house. Also asked them about their warranty coverage and was told they have $2 million of coverage in case of damages. They were understaffed with three movers; they should've had one more person (i've had this piano move before by other companies and previously four movers always did the work properly). The struggled getting the piano down the stairs. In the process they damaged the wall and they cracked a handrail along the staircase. Called and emailed their office multiple times about the damages and got no response at all. Ended up having to pay more to fix the damage than the cost of the move itself. It's too bad they were not honest in the first place and refused to fix the damage that they created. Based upon other reviews apparently they've done this before. I recommend going with another company that is better staffed, more experienced, and more honest. read more

I have used Lewis piano movers for many transfers between dc and nyc and sent many of my Juilliard pianist friends to them. They are reliable and show up when they say they are going to. They always pick up the phone and are never neglectful like i have observed some other movers. I had them move one our most valuable pieces, a brand new high gloss bluthner grand, and they did so brilliantly. All this on a rainy and tough condition day. Overall I was happy with the move they did for my 6ft. Grand piano. They had to move through a tight corner in order to get it through the front door, and were careful how they navigated it. HOWEVER, I do recommend you watch out for your piano casters. The guy told me before they moved it that they often break after lifting the piano. I didn't pay any attention, these casters have lasted 20 years through 11 moves. But, somehow, he shows me a broken one after bringing it inside??!! And then he also happens to have a set he can sell you for an extra $200 now that yours are broken. I'm not accusing, but also recommending people keep an eye out. read more

One of the three men did not wear a mask in my grandparents' home and the piano tipped forward and hit the banister as they were moving it down the stairs, causing damage to the wood! They took utmost care of the piano, picking it up at a single family home in Vienna and delivering it to my townhouse in Reston. They were courteous and professional, helpful in suggesting the best location for the piano, and what really meant the most to me was their prompt response to all my requests for information. They arrived exactly when promised - although the original window given when it was first scheduled was changed by them when they confirmed the day before. Everything was nice about this company until they showed up. The leader was grumpy. We were concerned about our brand new hardwood floors. He assured us that the wheels on his dolly were rubber and would not damage anything. The wheels left marks that were not permanent damage but he should have make sure that all of the marks were cleaned before they left. He was in a huge hurry to leave. More importantly, Lewis Piano Movers disconnected the pedal mechanism from the piano before they moved it. Upon reassembly, the damper did not work. The leader was basically telling my that it was that way before they got here. NOT! As I said, they took the damper pedals off. He was implying that I should call a piano company to fix it. We live in DC and inherited an old full upright piano from our church...a 2nd floor addition built years later at the church basically cornered this piano in but this crew called in back up (who left a job at the Wolf Trap) to make my move happen! Dozens of stairs, twists and turns, once they got to my home they moved the piano inside the house in a breeze! And though it was a tough job and they were caught by surprise the team was a pleasure to work with and so gracious!...Van wanted to commit to the price he quoted me but I offered to pay more because this was NOT the job he quoted. I wouldn't hire them again. The side of the piano on which they slide it was covered with white salt power and scratch marks from the dirty pad they used. Dirty foot prints on my floor, a dent in my dry wall, and a bag of take out boxes and glass bottles on my driveway.
