Instead, Dan, the owner, responded right away. He told me to call him on his cell phone, and without hearing the other store's "lowest" price, he quoted a price that was $1500 less. There was no haggling, no wondering if I was getting a worse deal than everyone else on the internet. We drove with the kids an hour to Frederick just to make sure this wasn't too good to be true, and it wasn't. My husband and I just recently added a Yamaha grand to our household/piano studio. We had done a little research prior to visiting Downtown Piano Works, but there is just so much information, and so many things to consider when making a purchase of this size. We had previously worked with Dan and Theresa to buy a Clavinova in 2018, and we were completely satisfied with both the purchase process, the product quality, and the customer service and continued support. So we knew that they would take care of us as we shopped for our grand piano. We were given so much time and space to try various models, ask questions, get honest and open comparisons between models, all without ANY pressure to choose a specific model. Not only were our questions answered, but Theresa asked us specific questions about intended use, the space that the piano would be in, what I liked more about one model over another...I seriously cannot be more positive about how sure I was of the piano that I ended up purchasing. At the time of this review this excellent business shows a perfect score from over 130 reviews on Google, and the same perfect score here. Hard to believe until you contact Dan and Theresa. I decided to rekindle my almost forgotten piano playing skills from my early childhood, and was looking for a Digital Piano. I started a search a while ago, before the social distancing era, visiting a few Piano dealer shops. The experience was reminiscent of car shopping at a dealership and I was therefore dreading the call. This is when the miracle happened: instead of the pushy and deceiving sales people I found two very knowledgeable, attentive, and pleasant owners - Dan who handles the technical (very important) side of the instruments, and Theresa who is a pianist, a teacher, and knows a lot about the music side of them. I couldn't have wished for a better and more thorough presentation perfectly customized to my needs and interests. Patiently answering my many questions, and demonstrating the piano over a long face-time session, I ended up buying outright a Yamaha CLP-635 even though my original intention was to first try several dealers - there was no reason for me to look any more or anywhere. Not only did I find the right piano for me, it was a sweet financial deal, and with their unique offer of a full credit in the event I would want a more sophisticated instrument within 10 years, I feel absolutely safe with the purchase. Delivery came shortly after, also well coordinated and executed. What I like best though is that even though the deal is already done, I keep getting superb service from the owners for all my questions and needs, technical and educational, with the same welcoming and caring attitude of the pre-sale. I have played piano since I was 4, and having recently moved to a bigger space, was looking to upgrade from a digital to a grand. I'm so glad that I found Theresa and Dan's shop and am sure you will not regret paying them a visit either. Looking for a piano can feel a bit like speed dating. The great thing about this shop is that they have so many of the Yamaha options for you to try all at once (which is not easy to find) and the expertise and willingness to help you through your process (which is even harder to find). Further, they're patient about letting you take your time to work through your decision while providing all the objective feedback they can. They are not looking to push you beyond what makes sense for your space and budget, but are happy to share what they've learned through years of working in the industry (and with Yamaha in particular) and through years of matching people to the right instrument as you try and consider your options both in the store and elsewhere. I thought that the budget I was working with would limit me to used pianos and I would have to work hard to find that diamond in the rough. But, after a couple quick visits here, I became convinced I would not find anything better. My living room is now transformed with a piano that is a pleasure on both the fingers and the ears. After our daughter started writing music on a broken keyboard we had laying around, we thought maybe we should sign her up for some piano lessons and buy a keyboard that actually had all of the keys in place, or a piano. We met with a local, well-respected piano teacher who listened to the music our daughter was composing, without any lessons, and she immediately sent us to Theresa Shykind at Downtown Piano Works. Sometimes in life, you just get lucky! We went to the store, met Dan and Theresa Shykind, talked to them about our daughter and asked whether we should buy an electric or an acoustic piano. Theresa listened to our daughter play and without hesitation said, "She needs an acoustic piano and I'll take her as a student." They did not pressure us in any way. They just found out what we were thinking about in terms of a piano, told us which pianos fit our needs, then let us decide. They gave us a great deal on the piano, it was delivered and tuned within a week, and it looks fantastic in our living room! Three years later, my daughter still loves the piano, plays it every day, and can't wait for her piano lesson each week with her piano teacher, therapist and good friend, Theresa Shykind. My daughter just played for the second time at the Maryland State Composer's Symposium at the University of Maryland, has medaled with honors at each of her piano adjudications, and is working on her Beethoven Sonata and some other pieces to be ready for college auditions in the Fall. I am a young professional who has been a serious piano player since early childhood. I was looking to buy a piano for my apartment in Falls Church, but I knew I could not afford the regular maintenance that an acoustic piano required. I visited Jordan Kitts in Rockville, The Piano Company in Leesburg, and Downtown Piano Works in Frederick. The staff at Jordan Kitts was friendly, but not particularly knowledgeable, and the manager I spoke with at The Piano Company was pompous and appeared to be reciting from the latest Kawai brochure. In contrast, my visit to Downtown Piano Works was relaxed and very informative. Dan answered my many questions and patiently demonstrated the escapement mechanism so crucial to a grand piano action (I had experienced it when playing, but never knew how it worked!). On that first visit, I was interested in trying out Yamaha's new hybrid pianos, and I played the NU1, the N1, and the N2 (they didn't have an N3 on the floor). I was not so impressed with the NU1 and the N1, but was simply blown away by the N2. Here was an "upright" digital piano with a real grand piano action that never needed to be tuned! It sounded as good (or better) than a full acoustic upright and played like a grand. Amazing. However, the price was considerably more than I could afford, so I went with something less expensive. On a repeat visit, I tried the Clavinova CLP-535, and decided that while not an N2, it was good enough for my purposes. What clinched the deal was that Dan told me that the company offers an upgrade policy that allows the customer to trade in their piano within the first 10 years of ownership and apply the FULL original purchase price towards another piano of greater value. So there is an N2 in my future! The CLP was delivered (free!) to my apartment by two careful movers, and I have been enjoying it very much over the last few months. The built-in speakers are good, but the instrument really shines with quality headphones. Finally, although I mostly dealt with Dan in the store, I had several very helpful conversations with Theresa over the phone, both before and after my purchase. I am trying to convince my church to upgrade their digital piano, and Theresa has been a great resource. Thank you Dan and Theresa!!! read more

I can't say enough about how helpful Dan was in finding a piano to replace the one we lost in a flooded house. Our electronic piano was long ago discontinued by the manufacturer and Dan helped find one that was comparable in features. He even wrote a letter to my insurance company comparing our damaged piano to the one he suggested as a replacement. My wife, who plays the instrument daily, couldn't be happier and has commented on how the Yamaha Clavanova is so similar to the Roland it replaced, only it sounds better. We bought a Yamaha GB1 from Dan and could not be more happy - read on! We had a challenge with the delivery folks showing up much later than scheduled and when they got here they were surprised to find out the delivery was up a set of stairs. However, Dan clearly noted this on the order so I know it was the delivery folks fault. They were going to leave it in the foyer over the weekend but we had a party scheduled for the next day and I said that was not acceptable. So, I helped them get it upstairs and all worked out okay. When I discussed the situation with Dan he offered to give me a small (actually not that small IMHO) refund and a second free tuning to make things right. I really was not expecting that and it really speaks to his honesty and integrity. We are very grateful and highly recommend Downtown Piano Works if you're in the market for a nice piano. We needed a piano to replace our aging spinet, and downtown piano works was the natural choice for us because of their location, and the fact that they mainly sell Yamaha pianos. I grew up with Yamaha pianos, and in my opinion there is no better piano brand so far as price and quality is concerned! The owner of the store assisted us by educating us about the various types of pianos that Yamaha produces, as well as the various intricacies of each type. We ultimately decided on a small baby grand because of the beautiful sound and look of the piano. Another tedbit I learned is that the store apparently has the cheapest prices in the MD, VA, and PA area! The owner assisted us with recycling our old piano for free when they dropped off the new piano, and the folks hey use to deliver the instruments are pros! All in all we had a five star experience. We will definitely use this store for all future purchases! read more
