Nick was wonderful to work with, including providing just the right movers for the difficult task of bringing the piano to our place on the third floor with no elevator.

The short version: Nick is shady, he keeps you running around in circles putting off delivery, delivers the wrong piano, and then avoids paying you the money you are owed if you sell on consignment with him! The details: I purchased my beautiful satin black Baldwin model M from Nick back in I think 2015 or 2016, the purchase was smooth, and I appreciated the quick delivery and the tuning that came with it. If I were only reviewing on this, I'd have given a much higher rating. Fast forward to 2022: I approached Pianoman because I was in a situation where I could no longer keep my piano, we agreed that he would take my piano and place it on consignment, and I would receive $5,000 within 10 days of its sale. This sounded fine to me but then started the problems! This agreement was made on 5/27/2022, Nick knew I was on a time crunch since I was doing this because I was moving....8 emails (with few responses from Nick), and nearly 4 months later on July 9th, 2022 they FINALLY came to get my piano for consignment. I check in via email regularly (once every month or so) to see if the piano has sold yet, every time the response is the same, something along the lines of "not yet, we will let you know when it does" Getting my piano back: after about 6-7 months of no sale, I was in a position to take my piano back again, I message Nick again on 3/17/23 to confirm that it still hasn't sold and to arrange delivery, and he agreed to send it back. 2 1/2 months and 52 emails back and forth (where he kept promising delivery and then pushing me back week by week) later they finally call to tell me my piano will be delivered that same day (4/24/23). Great! The truck arrives, they uncover the piano... It isn't my piano!!! They send me a gloss black Baldwin Model R, mine was a satin black Baldwin Model M. I refuse delivery and instantly messaged Nick. He tells me they need to work out what happened since they are in the process of moving stores (no excuse for delivering the wrong piano) The excuse: A week or so passes and he finally tells me that the mix-up was because he had SOLD MY PIANO MONTHS AGO! And somehow "didn't realize it" (really? I doubt that). Now he tries pushing off paying me: He then tells me he will send me the $5,000 he owes me the next week or I could take that same value off the sale price of a new piano. I agree to the $5,000 (though the agreement was for the $5,000 to be sent to me within 10 days of sale, which clearly didn't happen since the piano was sold months prior without my knowledge... I should have demanded interest in addition to the $5,000 for holding my money for so long). He promises I will receive my payment by 5/2/23...Well, surprise surprise, the day he promises to send the money comes and goes and I still don't have the 5 grand. I email to see what was up and he tries to push it back another few days because "he is moving the store and his computer is down"... Not my problem, he knew when the money was expected (after all, it was the date HE promised) and this has now been a 9-month goose chase with him. Finally, on 5/5/23 he sends the money he owed me, but he waited until so late in the day to work out the transaction and banking that it nearly was pushed back again.

I was clear up front - I'm just curious about the price of a piano, deliver, maintenance to see if one would be in my future or not. The woman working seemed happy to talk about different types of pianos, opening up a few to show off a couple that had beautiful inside. She explained the purchasing options and was happy to let me play a few chords on each one to get a feel for the sound differences. I love music stores that let your browse a bit. The Piano Man carries well refurbished used pianos for the most part. They will deliver, move, tune and repair pianos. Most come with a warranty of at least 5 years, some more. Depending on your credit, you can pay in installments, which I suppose if you're a professional pianist having one now instead of saving up might make sense - I didn't ask about terms for this. You can also put a down payment to hold a piano, like any used instrument store, but this is you paying to hold the instrument. If you decide you don't want the piano, that deposit is forfeit. So don't put one down until you're positive you will buy the piano.

Have you ever met someone and instantly knew they were about to become a huge part of your family?…read more Tom Bonvegna responded to an online inquiry I had about a Baby Grand piano that I wanted to surprise my husband with while he was deployed. My husband had played for years and since this was our first home purchase, I really wanted to make that happen. Tom, a Vietnam Vet and hero, reached out to me, heard my story and desire, and made it his goal to help us get a beautiful piano delivered. Our budget was ridiculously tight, and Tom made it happen. I researched everywhere, from estate sales, other online marketplace forums, about 15 different piano stores (some local, some not). After all of the research I had done (not knowing much about pianos beforehand), I learned that unless you REALLY know your stuff, you needed to go through a reputable company. If a piano wasn't tuned for the duration of its life, it could look pretty, but it wouldn't be very functional. I almost made a deal with another company that I would have regretted... and then Tom called and from that moment, I had an absolute peace about working with him. He was not a "salesman," but a true gentleman. Tom went the extra mile by a lot!!! There was one piano we thought would work, and it was even bigger than my original plan. After Tom looked at the pictures of my home (and staircase), we decided to wait for another piano to become available. There was a little bit of time that went by where I didn't think we were going to find it, and then... the call came. Tom found the most beautiful Yamaha, ebony, baby grand that plays incredibly! My husband was completely surprised and has loved at (1) having a baby grand piano delivered in his home without him there, (2) that I stayed within my designated "muahahaha" budget, and (3) that we found such an incredible person to work with. The piano delivery service was also excellent! Such care, such professionalism, and physical strength too. It's been four and one-half months and my home has been filled with music ever since. Thank you Jason's Music Center for being such a wonderful company to work with...and thank you to Tom for really making this happen.

Once we decided on a piano, Steve was able to make the magic happen so we could bring it home! This included trading in our baby grand. As our piano wasn't in stock, Steve went out of his way to locate one for us. There was a wait for the next shipment and the process of customs, but it was so worth it! It has a beautiful, rich, mellow sound! We are looking forward to the decades that this piano will be used! Today alone, it's been used almost nonstop since it's arrival! Also, the piano movers were so professional and really took care of each piano during take down and set up. Thank you again Steve!

Their teachers go out of their way to help students that aren't even their own! Incredible atmosphere here. As a business owner myself, what I can tell you is that if you miss the days in which the business owners will try everything in their power to help you, and for them to actually care about you, the customer - this is the place for you. What you will ultimately get out of doing business with them will be the best you can hope to get anywhere nearby. The one negative review I see here - the writer strikes me as an impossible to please and/or passive/aggressive kind of person - my gut tells me he's crafted an intentionally exaggerated one-sided story because he was unhappy when he found out that his piano was not worth as much as he was hoping. Phil is in fact very polite, professional and upfront, so something doesn't add up in this story. When you come here and actually meet with Nancy and Phil, you'll understand. Other competitors in the area are also run by good folks, but Nancy and Phil are outstanding and are head and shoulders above. Check their Google Maps reviews and you'll see more praise for them. Highly recommended.

This is the place to go in the DMV if you're looking for a new Yamaha piano…read more We were first-time piano buyers looking for a new U1. From what I read online, most piano dealers will quote an MSRP or "SMP (suggested maximum price)" with the expectation that you will haggle down the price. We went to our local Yamaha dealer [not Downtown Piano Works] and met with a sales associate recommended by our piano teacher. His first offer was already less than MSRP: I'm terrible at haggling, but I figured I'd try anyway and ask for a better price. A day later, he came back with another $500 off the price. I was feeling pretty good about myself and was getting ready to go to the store before his "offer expired." On a whim, minutes before I left, I thought I'd try the next closest Yamaha dealer, which happened to be Downtown Piano Works. I typed a chat message into their website, expecting a canned AI answer. Instead, Dan, the owner, responded right away. He told me to call him on his cell phone, and without hearing the other store's "lowest" price, he quoted a price that was $1500 less. There was no haggling, no wondering if I was getting a worse deal than everyone else on the internet. We drove with the kids an hour to Frederick just to make sure this wasn't too good to be true, and it wasn't. Dan and Theresa opened their store on a Saturday night, three hours after I'd first messaged their website. By the time we left, we were the owners of a new Yamaha U1. If you're in the market for a new Yamaha acoustic piano, within driving distance of Frederick, and want to avoid the usual stress of new piano shopping, I'd definitely try clicking chat on their website.
