Dr Lee and staff took me in the same day immediately coming from my dentist's office and ended up staying well after normal office hours. He took time and tested various teeth in the back area of my mouth to determine that it actually was #18 causing the problem before performing root canal. My appointment began with a blood pressure check by the dental assistant. After this, I was left alone in the examination room for approximately 30 minutes without any communication or update. When Dr. Kim entered, there was no acknowledgment of the extended wait or explanation for the delay. When the examination began, Dr. Kim immediately proceeded to administer injectable anesthesia without first applying topical numbing medication. In all of my prior dental experiences, providers have used a topical anesthetic (typically applied with a cotton swab) before administering injections to minimize discomfort. No such step was taken in this case. Additionally, rather than allowing sufficient time for the anesthetic to take full effect before beginning the examination, Dr. Kim continued working almost immediately. This approach felt rushed and unnecessarily uncomfortable. During the evaluation, I was informed that the implant had failed and that there was bone loss attributed to gingivitis associated with the implant placement. It is important to note that I have had two other implants completed in the same office by another provider without complication. This was not the first time I felt uneasy during treatment by Dr. Kim. During the original implant procedure, the environment also felt rushed. There was minimal reassurance, and interactions with staff appeared abrupt, including instances where instruments were taken from the assistant in a manner that seemed unprofessional. On both occasions, adequate time was not allowed for anesthesia to take effect before proceeding. Oral surgery requires precision, patience, and attentiveness not only to clinical standards but also to patient comfort and communication. My experience did not reflect those qualities. As a patient, I expect thoroughness, clear communication, and a measured approach, particularly during surgical procedures. Given these concerns, I will be working with the VA to pursue follow-up care at a different facility. I am left questioning whether my experience reflects broader issues in practice management or something more specific, but regardless, the encounter was deeply frustrating and disappointing. From scheduling, through the procedure and afterwards they were all amazing! With particular anxiety around dental work they explained every step of the procedure and checked in with me throughout. As a testament to the care and concern for patients, I took particularly note that I was not tightly scheduled in between two other procedures. Rather I was scheduled for 1 hour for a 30 minute procedure allowing plenty of time to ask questions. Finally, their covid procedures were thorough and visible throughout the office. They always keep you waiting, the dentist keeps very poor, handwritten records of what he does in your chart, and that is the ONLY record. No one else can read his handwriting, so obtaining your records to pass on to a new dentist is fruitless. I had to have a front tooth implant replaced. The dentist had to BORROW the proper tool to remove the old one, from the oral surgeon who put in the first one, 10 years prior--because he doesn't apparently have any current technical equipment or tools to work with himself. Sooo, when he figured out he couldn't remove it, I of course, had to reschedule when he had the right tool for the job. THEN, the temporary he had put in kept falling out. When the replacement crown finally arrived, it not only didn't fit, but was way off in color, thickness, size, everything. Over the next 1& 1/2 YEARS, I had to come in repeatedly, for approximately 8 or 9 crown install attempts--because every one came back poorly made, poorly sized and way off in color. His office called to let me know another crown had arrived and to schedule another appointment, but when I came, THEY COULD NOT FIND THE TOOTH! So, another waste of time. I never got a satisfactory crown--I finally just got so tired of coming in time and time again to test out another dud, that gave up and went with the 8th or 9th try, and the tooth has bothered me ever since. It in no way matches my other front tooth, is thick and uncomfortable, and never fit properly under the gum. It's awful. This is just one of many issues I had with that place. I would never go back and NEVER would I recommend this practice.
