Do not go here if you are not French. My husband popped in to grab us food since I'm sick at the hotel. He was met immediately with a sour look from what I would assume as the owner (from reading the other reviews) when he began speaking to him in English and asking if he speaks English. The guy said no and proceeded to show him the menu and indicate that it was in French. My husband explained that was ok since he had his phone and could translate it. The guy scoffed but showed him to a table anyway. Every time he walked away from the table my husband said he could hear the guy talking and laughing with the servers. Thankfully someone that spoke French leaned over and said "He doesn't seem to like you." So my husband left. I get that every owner has the right to choose who they serve and we're American so probably broadly disliked, but we are not THOSE Americans and everyone deserves to be treated with respect. 0 stars if I could, and would definitely not recommend. read more

Food was good and enjoyed the ambiance. However felt taken advantage of by our server. He did not give us any time to review the menu and offered to make our selections for the table. We agreed and when he mentioned the beef we expressed some concern as one of us is not a meat eater. We ultimately agreed to beef for all not knowing the portion size. Server should have noted the size of beef. We were 7 with 3 being petite women. I have no idea of size but it had to be at least 12 oz per person if not more. We were never asked for temperature either and it was served pretty rare. No one finished their meat even the men because it was too much and it was too rare. We were also given no explanation of any of the starters or any of the dressings with the meat. Given we did not order anything it should have all been explained. We could of done with half of the meat we got. Our bill for 7 people was about $1000 not including the wine we ordered. I never expected such a large meet portion given it was France and thought portions were more manageable than the U.S. or I would have inquired more. Our fault for sure for not controlling the ordering. Won't happen again and would not recommend for this reason! read more

After our great evening a few weeks ago, we just had to go back for my birthday yesterday We shared the rosette - very nice and good bread; I had that steak (chose the sauce poivre) again, while my wife had the veal (very rich sauce) - again super - Jean does have the best beef; a lemon tart meringue for her, the citron and poire sorbet for me...I ended up with 4 boules as the waiter realised they had missed out the citron...one double espresso. We chose the Saint-Amour this time - far too drinkable as ever...€170 all in Downside - France is always good for strikes - current strike is dustmen and there are mountains of rubbish everywhere on streets surrounding Courcelles and Ternes; having to pass La Lorraine (the fish restaurant on the corner) was a trial (do it quickly)...Paris has the Olympics soon; could be a gold medal contender if they introduced Strikes as a new competition read more

This place is famous for the pepper steak (steak au poivre). The sauce is very good but the cut of steak was the best! I can see why so many celebrities and people came. They have a placemat of signatures of a lot of people who came, as well as pictures all over the walls. There are a lot of appetizer and other options. Bon appétit! read more

Mon dieu!!! What a mind blowing meal! My boyfriend and I came here for dinner, we got one of the only 2 available tables. We had the artichokes and oeufs mayonnaise for starters and for mains I had the sole meunière and he had boeuf Bourgogne. He had the baba au rhum for dessert and I had the crème de marron. They had one of my favorite brasserie traits, pichet vin rouge! The wait staff was friendly and efficient, the food was magnifique! My fish was perfect and served in its entirety! I sampled some of my mans beef bourguignon, and just wow. With the chestnut creme dessert, they give you also a jar of creme fraiche and a jar of strawberry compote, such a smart addition for the chestnut creme! This is the best steak and best meal I've ever had in my entire life. It's my favorite restaurant in the world, literally. Honestly, I don't want to write any more than that but stupid yelp is yelling at me. Our entrées (escargots and foie gras) were out less than two minutes after ordering--both of which were wonderfully rich and tasteful without being too heavy or overwhelming. Next, our main course followed just as we finished our entrées. Our meat was absolutely perfection: a gorgwous crust with a warm deep red center and the au poivre sauce is truly incredible. We caught ourselves asking for more bread to soak it up after we had finished both steaks. And as a kicker, the French fries are also the best I've ever had: crispy and warm yet soft on the inside. Lastly, dessert was the rum baba with rum, sugar syrup, strawberry sauce, and fresh whipped cream that they make at your table. The pushed through our food paralysis and engulfed that as any self respecting American would at such an incredible establishment. This meal was a triumph on all accounts. The owner even gave us a bottle of his house made wine to take home with us. He was so warm and welcoming (as was our server). If it's your first time, they will make you feel like you're an old friend who just hasn't been back in a while. The owner tried to f**k us in the bathroom. They brought us cheese and served it to everyone in the restaurant with our slobber all over it (this was after my developmentally challenged sister licked the cheese all over). The owner asked my mother to the "bathroom" on multiple occasion/ body shamed her. Never visit this hell- hole on earth. On the bright side we made it out of this restaurant in one piece (even after they tried to poison us with an abundance of cheese). Based on previous reviews I decided to try, and I'm so glad I did. The butchers special beef (filet mignon) with the pepper sauce and a side of string beans smothered in butter and pomme frite( French Fries) just outstanding and chase it with a very nice Beaujolais. Great place, I will definitely return. Btw, the proprietor and staff are great. I have returned 3 months later and this place still just as good as last, however I've noticed this place is jumping and they still found a table for me. A couple things made this a very negative experience. 1) we asked for the cheese plate (16 euros on the menu), he brought a giant tray of cheeses, like a communal cheese plate. We were to eat a certain amount and not finish it, and he would take it back and basically decide if we ate 1, 2, or 3 servings worth and would charge us (we ended up getting charged 2 servings worth, so 32 euros for cheese). I would've rather he just bring out what he thought was 16 euros worth of cheese. We asked for the single serving of 16 euros but did not receive it. Our main courses were decent, pepper steak was good, beef stew was good, lamb chops were flavorless. But after our meal 2) we said we didn't want dessert and he was extremely pushy, telling us "no?! I am bringing you dessert, I won't be offended if you don't like it." So he literally brought out a dessert we did not order or get to choose, we didn't end up even liking it, and it was another 16 euros on our check. In total we overpaid by 32 euros. Looking back, I wonder if he felt he could get away with this because early on in our meal he asked if we were in Paris for business, and we said yes. He probably knew our likelihood of fighting the extra costs was lower since we would be expensing it...he's probably right because if I was paying out of pocket myself I definitely would have fought it. I can't imagine him doing this to every guest... Overall a bad dining experience and I would not return and would not recommend going. read more

I'm so surprised this place received such bad reviews, especially from mainly French people. Our hotel recommended we try Gourmets on our first night in Paris and we feel tremendously fortunate to have done so. The place is what you'd imagine a traditional French bistro to be. We were seated in a very tight area, shoulder to shoulder with diners and didn't mind a bit. The people in our area were all so friendly. We had great conversation with everyone there and one of the tables even passed their wine bottle on to us. The owner, Jean Francois is something to be reckoned with. There are pictures of him with several different celebrities on the menu and on the walls. several. And he's quite proud of them too. You can't help but feel happy for him about it. He is extremely nice & personable and immediately came to our aid with the menu which was all in French. My husband had steak with bone marrow and and sea salt. I ordered what he called the Pepper Steak which was so freaking delicious. The sauce over the steak was not spicy or peppery at all but oh so flavorful. And the quality of the beef? Amazing. Some of the best beef we've ever had. It was seared perfectly on the outside. Be prepared for steaks/filets being the size of a baseball. We also had the Foie Gras appetizer which tasted better than any foie gras we've had in the states. The pomme fritte? Wow. Just wow. Highly recommend you order them to see what real fries should taste like. To end the meal we had the cake with the fresh berries and cream topped with run and some other sweet liquid labeled sirop on the bottle. I am not a real fan of alcohol in desserts but my husband loved it. The chocolate mousse was delicious and thick. I don't know what chocolate they use but I want to take it home. I wish I took pictures of the food but sitting so close to others I would've felt like a typical annoying foodie. Next time.
