If you adore chocolate, you might consider a visit to the Fine Chocolate store Lounge 3 ;-)…read more The different chocolate brands they sell are considered the best in the world. I'm talking about Valrohna from France (which is the chocolate brand that gourmetchefs use in their deserts), actually its the purest and most honest chocolate in the world. Then there is Neuhaus from Belgium which tastes equally heavenly, but has a different character, and is also one of the highest quality chocolate brands in the world. And last but not least, Godiva from Belgium (also a very good chocolate) which is a bit sweeter and more creamy. Sometimes they sell a view different brands, like for instance... Ferrero, Lindt or Leonidas, but that is not always the case, I think that depends on the season. The ladies (and one or two gentlemen) really know their stuff, and are passioned about their chocolate. They know their brands inside out, offer high quality service, are very good in giving chocolate-advise and suggestions, have a great smile and make me feel like I am the queen herself :-) Yes, that is what I call, the million dollar-treatment :-D! They even walk around the counter and offer me my purchase as if it is a big diamond I bought for the ridiculous price of 10.000 euro's!!! But no!!!! It just is a little bag with chocolate inside!! That is the WAUW-factor for me, honestly. Soooo, if you get the chance to buy some chocolate for a loved one of yourself, give them a visit, and don't be surprised if you buy more than you bargained for. Have fun :-D

It's also one of my favorite places to go when I am thinking of the perfect gift to give someone. Service is warm, friendly and professional. It's definitely a win all around.

So myself and a few others waited for a long time while the staff just looked at us. When I was finally sat the server seemed to care less. It was really weird. However, the person who actually brought me the food was so nice and friendly. The coffee comes with a macaron which was a happy surprise. It was absolutely delicious. The salad and wine I got were very good as well. If this restaurant were not in the airport I probably would not come back. But, since it is I am sure I will be back next time I fly in.

The story about how this place came about is just heartwarming and makes me want to give them all my money. The chocolate really is fantastic, and it comes in a plethora of flavors. The storefront is where you can make an appointment to get into and is a very fun experience where you get to choose your own chocolate and toppings. You get to watch the bar being made and you get to choose the wrapper colors and name your chocolate bar. I think this makes for a really great little gift to give to family and friends back home. You can also purchase premade chocolate bars in the store, and trust me when I say you can't really go wrong. If a flavor sounds good to you add it to your bag. The chocolate is that iconic European super rich chocolate.

If I could give more than five stars to this little shop (tucked in one of the many sidestreets…read morethat dot Amsterdam) I would. Before I get into the shop itself, The wife and I need to note the owner and hostess. She is, without a doubt, the nicest person we've ever encountered in any shop, restaurant or store. She truly cares about her wares, and seems to care in turn about your experience and that you be happy while you are there; if anyone ever earns the designation "hostess" it is her. For lack of a better descriptive, she is grandmotherly in the best way. My wife would insist (and I would agree) to give this shop five stars based on her service alone, even if the shop was drab and the chocolates mediocre. Fortunately, neither is the case. The chocolates are universally excellent and artisinally produced. She sells them in packaged form to take with you and savor in your home; however she also prepares a hot chocolate for you to enjoy in the shop or on the go, and it is incredibly rich without being too sweet. While not exactly inexpensive, it is also more than in-line with high end chocolates in Europe. What about the store itself? Well, the sense that our hostess belongs in a Harry Potter book as a kindly, magical shopkeeper is enhanced by the store's appearance. It radiates warmth as it is filled with chocolate-related antiques and knickknacks, charming designed displays and shelves overstuffed with quaintly designed sweets packaging. But make no mistake: the shop itself is meticulously clean and neat. As you can tell, I and my wife could gush about this shop for a long while. But I'll leave you with: go visit and say hello.

Twenty minutes later…read morewe left with 12 bars of chocolate (no judgment: SOME were for gifts), each wrapped beautifully, and offering a unique flavor or combination of flavors. The store portion has a large table with samples of nearly all of the bars. We sampled almost all of them -- what, we should just guess what they taste like?! (Usability note: the glass bottles that house the samples are not ideal; the opening is small and you can easily imagine a number of hands and fingers touching the spot where the samples come out.) In the back of the shop is, from what we could tell, their main factory, and they were busy churning out chocolates. Plus, near the register, there are chocolates by the pound. Yes, we got one of those as well. As we explored other shops in the city, we saw other chocolates and realized that Urban Cacao does white label production for many of them. Some of those stores had lower prices (and different options) than at the main shop we visited, but the selection and variety of flavors makes this a must-visit location.

Their creations are spectacular, awe-inspiring, breath-taking (and certainly breathtakingly expensive!). They most have shops in areas where the ultra-rich live, who can afford to get their parties catered by Huize van Wely, or who are happy to pay double for a Wely-quality pastry. If you're familiar with Dutch customs, you'll know visitors are expected to bring chocolates, wine or flowers to a party or dinner at a friend's house. If you really want to impress your hosts, Wely should be your destination. Great place for custom/wedding cakes too. Though Wely is a little too pricy usually for me, my favorite purchase here was a gorgeous, enormous chocolate high-heeled shoe filled with bonbons for my sister's birthday. Perfect gift for someone who has limited space at home for regular gifts, is difficult to shop for, or who "has everything". Who doesn't love chocolate?
