    Milk Caramel Sea Salt 32%
    Travis B.

Milk Caramel Sea Salt 32%: Tony's Chocolonely was founded in 2005 by Teun (Tony), who is a Dutch journalist. His mission statement is to end exploitation in the chocolate industry. The company's chocolate is made primarily in Belgium with their cocoa coming from West Africa. This particular bar was recommended to me by a former colleague and when I spotted one on clearance I had to give it a shot. It takes the original Tony's milk chocolate bar and adds crunchy caramel and flakes of sea salt. According to their website, it is also their best-selling flavor worldwide. There's nothing inherently wrong with this candy bar, that said, I was a bit disappointed. Both of the reasons for my disappointment are on me as I did not do any research ahead of time like I typically do. First, I didn't like that the bar is not evenly divided. Tony's does this because their bars depict the West African coastline with the chunks just above representing the Gulf of Guinea. Also, it's meant to illustrate the inequality in the chocolate industry (cocoa farming and production). On paper I think those are great ideas, but it's annoying trying to eat an oddly shaped bar. Second, I was expecting the bar to have an oozing caramel center like a Cadbury Caramello. That's how I like my caramel chocolate, but to be fair, Tony's specifically describes the bar as having crunchy caramel. Funny enough, the miniscule caramel globs make me think of the amber containing mosquitos from Jurassic Park. I will applaud Tony's on the salted caramel flavor as unlike some products, it's definitely salty (in a good way). Not my favorite candy bar, but still enjoyable. I had no idea Tony's Chocolates was based in Amsterdam. I have tried their chocolate as far away as Kenmore, WA (USA) and thought it was pretty decent. I learned Tony's is based in Amsterdam when I saw their shop at the Amsterdam airport. When I was strolling through the city I then ran across the Chocolonely but it had just closed for the day. Not to be deterred I returned at an earlier time a few days later and went through the store. I like the interactive exhibits and the staff were knowledgeable and nice and pointed out the specials only found in the Chocolonely. I bought a few special flavors and had to hold off on all the cool looking Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream collab flavors! Still, I came away with much more chocolate than I thought I would and am still snacking on it all the way back home in Kenmore, WA. Thanks Tony's!

Martine helping us and us trying all the samples

We were in Amsterdam last month and were on a bike ride and ran into Tony's chocolonely shop and we loved it. We met a guy name Martine and he was so knowledgeable about all the chocolates and he was so kind and helpful. We went home with a handful of chocolates and have been enjoying them all month long. This chocolate is amazing and the story behind it is also amazing. I wish we had one of these shops in Portland Oregon. And wish we had a Martine to help us.

The downstairs chocolate store was fantastic, you can custom design your own chocolate bar (your own wrapper and choose a combination of chocolate flavors). The upstairs chocolate bar was great, unfortunately there are only 2 options of milkshakes and the hot chocolate was dead average (it tasted like instant hot chocolate). Worth the visit!

    A wall full of chocolates!

Tried a few Bonnat bars I havent had before, and some newer Dutch brands using cacao from Indonesia (Bali) and Mexico (xoconusco). They also had Pralus, Amadei, etc. They have some homemade filled chocolates, looking forward to trying that next time.

Before I get into the shop itself, The wife and I need to note the owner and hostess. She is, without a doubt, the nicest person we've ever encountered in any shop, restaurant or store. She truly cares about her wares, and seems to care in turn about your experience and that you be happy while you are there; if anyone ever earns the designation "hostess" it is her. For lack of a better descriptive, she is grandmotherly in the best way. My wife would insist (and I would agree) to give this shop five stars based on her service alone, even if the shop was drab and the chocolates mediocre. Fortunately, neither is the case. The chocolates are universally excellent and artisinally produced. She sells them in packaged form to take with you and savor in your home; however she also prepares a hot chocolate for you to enjoy in the shop or on the go, and it is incredibly rich without being too sweet. While not exactly inexpensive, it is also more than in-line with high end chocolates in Europe. What about the store itself? Well, the sense that our hostess belongs in a Harry Potter book as a kindly, magical shopkeeper is enhanced by the store's appearance. It radiates warmth as it is filled with chocolate-related antiques and knickknacks, charming designed displays and shelves overstuffed with quaintly designed sweets packaging. But make no mistake: the shop itself is meticulously clean and neat. As you can tell, I and my wife could gush about this shop for a long while. But I'll leave you with: go visit and say hello.

Twenty minutes later…read morewe left with 12 bars of chocolate (no judgment: SOME were for gifts), each wrapped beautifully, and offering a unique flavor or combination of flavors. The store portion has a large table with samples of nearly all of the bars. We sampled almost all of them -- what, we should just guess what they taste like?! (Usability note: the glass bottles that house the samples are not ideal; the opening is small and you can easily imagine a number of hands and fingers touching the spot where the samples come out.) In the back of the shop is, from what we could tell, their main factory, and they were busy churning out chocolates. Plus, near the register, there are chocolates by the pound. Yes, we got one of those as well. As we explored other shops in the city, we saw other chocolates and realized that Urban Cacao does white label production for many of them. Some of those stores had lower prices (and different options) than at the main shop we visited, but the selection and variety of flavors makes this a must-visit location.

Good customer service is a commodity in this town so I had to look into this place... As a result of the mistake and the story of it's correction, I'd consider myself now to be a Tout regular. I buy the macaroons as gifts for people, I use them to impress my bosses and let's be honest, I cheekily gift them to myself as well. :) I also took part in the macaroon workshop which was great! My only complaint here was that we weren't able to do everything ourselves but due to the nature of macaroons, it would need to be a pretty long workshop (try 3 days!). The price of the workshop might seem steep (I think 60 euros) but I came out of there with almost 2 full boxes of mini macaroons so it's totally worth it if you ask me - not to mention the afternoon of educational fun and the owner is his own brand of eye-candy... :P
