On my second visit I had the Fried Cod. Meaty and flakey nuggets of Cod were coated in a perfectly crisp breading with a nice saltiness and flavorful spices. The side of tartar sauce was heavenly creamy, sweet and tangy. Frens Haringhandel is a must visit.

But we knew we had to try it, and life is short. It is a tiny stand located along a central canal in the heart of the city. Business is hopping here. We got the picked herring and kibbeling, which are the main staples here. The pickled herring was, well, something you either love or don't. It has somewhat of a gelatinous texture that can be off-putting, but when you take a bite with the sides of sweet pickles and onions, it shines. The Kibbeling was out of this world. Perfectly fried with a crunchy batter that had a hint of, hmmm, curry, maybe. It was amazing. Although the batter was thick and tasty, it didn't outdo the delicious cod. The staff here was friendly, and having this Dutch food along a canal in Amsterdam made for a memorable experience. There are plenty of places to sit near the stand - enjoy this tasty food and watch the world go by.

This place is great…read more It's the local fish shop to where I live and I wouldn't go anywhere else. A nice range of fresh and prepared (smoked or fried) fish. They also sometimes have fish gumbo and prepared take home meals which are fresh and tasty. The bear herrings I have had here in Amsterdam. Ellen, who is one of the staff, prepares them fresh as ordered and is meticulous in her preparation. Ellen is also very knowledgeable about all things fish and can definitely recommend what would be best for whatever you need something for, be it dinner, BBQing, afternoon snack etc. she also speaks great English! Will be back here many times I'm sure this is just the start of my regular visits here

The Lekkerbekkie (fish with light batter) is a Amsterdam favorite and I now I know why .. it's delicious. Also try the Viskoek, which is a crab cake and tuna tataki for a quick sushi style lunch or dinner.

The sandwich was delightful - perfectly soft bread enveloping briny pickled fish, pickles, and onions? Yes! The pickled herring is not for everyone, and we had already tried it elsewhere on its own. Having it in a sandwich was a better experience. The Kibbeling was very good - well breaded, but not greasy, and letting the fish flavor through. There isn't really anywhere to sit, but you can stand at some tables outside or snack inside the establishment, as well. We would be regulars here, for sure, if we lived close by.
