We also were able to take a day to explore Swindon, which itself turned out to have pleasant surprises in store. But this hotel was a great value in a location well suited as an anchor point for a visit to this region. We arrived late and finding exactly how to reach the front entrance was a little challenging with the urban street routing and just the general way the UK engineers their traffic flow (let's just say that the thoughts of the traffic engineers in the UK are not my thoughts). But we finally found the road to the front of the facility. The person checking us in was efficient and helpful. We found our room with little problem. The parking here was limited, but there was fortunately room for our car in the garage even though we arrived late in the evening. They did offer a suggestion for cheaper off-site parking had their garage been full or had we wanted to save a few pounds. But we preferred the sheltered, limited access location on-site. The hotel was up to HI Express standards in general. Our room was adequately spacious and clean. The bathroom was slightly cramped, especially the shower, but this is not unusual for Europe. The bed was reasonably comfortable and there was minimal nightime noise, which allowed for a good night's sleep. The WiFi worked well throughout our stay. The breakfast was more than adequate for our needs and the breakfast room afforded adequate seating. The cinnamon rolls go fast, but the hot food availability was more than sufficient with eggs, meat, beans and potatoes. Breads, cereal and yogurt were also available. The reason for choosing this hotel was the price. At around £75 per night, this was very attractive for what it offered. The experience was what I expected if not a bit better than I expected, making this a very good value. I also received my IHG points, which is important to me as a Platinum Member. We would use this hotel again if we make a return visit to the area.

First they left one tissue left in the tissue box then we only had enough toilet paper for one use no back up toilet paper. A towel had a brown stain on it when I was about to use it. Then the phone wasn't working. They came down to try to fix it with no luck and didn't even offer to accommodate us to another room. I asked receptionist if they had a microwave and they sent me to the restaurant and I asked the server and he said yes they can warm up my food then the manager came yelling saying no no our food and I said okay that's fine no big deal. Proceeded to follow me to the lobby to talk to the receptionist about me. I will never stay here again or recommend anyone to stay here. Do better Marriott.

The website description starts with the excitement inducing sentence: 'This welcoming hotel is less than 5-minutes drive from junction 15 of the M4 and 2 miles from central Swindon.' QED. Incidentally, waiting 90 minutes for room service is not pleasant. I actually gnawed part of my arm off due to the hunger. No doubt the restaurant was busy and it's near Christmas and blah blah blah. On the plus side the staff are nice enough and very helpful. In addition, there is a swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi and gym for all your fitness needs. Oh, it's also close to a steam museum... So, if you're the sort of person who likes to stay in cheap, clean and vapid environments for a night, don your M&S khaki trousers and drive your Toyota Corolla down the M4 for a fun-filled yawn-fest. He asked for our name and immediately showed us to our room, no paperwork was completed. We thought that was far out, but went with the flow and didn't fuss about it. The room was smaller than what we are used to but it was okay. It had the basic necessities. The bathroom had no shelve space, like, none at all. That was inconvenient, but not fatal. I get that things are different here so I'm okay with this. Parking is free for guests. That's great since you've got to pay for that everywhere in this city.

Obviously the meat needs to be good, it is, but cooking in this way just elevates a good steak to an excellent steak. Anyway, starters was a modern take on a prawns cocktail; fresh and mighty fine. I've never had a few large battered prawns nestling on top of a standard prawn cocktail but it works! The main course was an 8oz rib steak (plenty big enough; I tried the 10oz sirloin but it's too lean) with chunky chips and a fiery pepper sauce. Mushrooms and tomatoes are also there. I can't offer any negative points. Really top notch food. The house wine is also good enough. It's worth a go!

The biggest issue was the hidden charges, which they charge you automatically at check out, without asking for your card & showing invoice. Once you book, they try to charge for everything extra to the card you used to book. Breakfast charge was 9.5gbp per person so a family of 3 ended up paying 28gbp/per night. Breakast was so horrible that we realised it does not worth it. So tried to cancel the brealfast for remaining nights, which manager on duty did not accepted. Stayed in November 2021 for 3 nights and been charged for 100gbp for breakfasts !!!! Plus there has been charges for cleaning. Honestly if this hotel wants to get guests and get profitable again, all reception management needs to be replaced by staff with at least basis hospitality attitute. We have tried many Japanese restaurants in the South West and the Stanton House Hotel stands well above the rest. The hotel is set in magnificent grounds and is well worth a visit just to sit down and have a drink of coke etc. Don't let the fact that this is a hotel bother you (or that it's in Swindon), the prices are very competitive and this is proved by the amount of Japanese families sat around the dinning tables. Recommended: The Buffet on Thursdays, it is normally impossible to get so much Sashimi for this price.
