It has been lovingly restored to offer a classic Cotswolds pub and B&B to guests with open log fires, exposed beams and many original features. Located in the Castle Combe market place, the historic inn has seen the likes of Oliver Cromwell (English politician and military officer) pass through its doors. After touring through the Cotswolds, we stopped at the Inn for some lunch. We were one of the first guests to arrive that day and were seated promptly. Their restaurant serves a surprisingly creative British menu with many gluten free options and features an extensive wine list. I had yet to eat fish 'n chips on this trip and so I went with the Lager Battered Catch of the Day which came with a pea puree, dripping chips, and curry sauce. This was probably the most interesting fish 'n chips I've had to date. I've never had it come with 'dipping sauces' before. I normally just have it with a bunch of malt vinegar, but dipping it in that curry sauce was so incredibly delicious! Woah! The pea sauce was also interesting, but I found myself continuously going back to the curry. The dish was also perfectly fried with a crispy outside, moist inside, and it was not oily at all. This was honestly the best I had while in the UK and I still think about it months later! If I had malt vinegar it would have been even better. My other half had some local beer with the Breast of Creedy Duck w/ Leg Ragu, Braised Onion, and Asparagus and Turnip. This dish was lovely and nicely presented. My husband really enjoyed it. The lag ragu in braised onion was very flavorful and I would have eaten an entree size of that. Our little one had mac n' cheese. It was a bit pricey for a lunch, but given the location, limited options, history, and quality of products; it's understandable. The service was a bit slower than we would have liked (that may be my American expectations speaking), but overall, we had a lovely time and enjoyed our lunch in this magical little English village. I am always suspicious when the menu has to use grandiose descriptions to impress when no one is actually going to know what it means. The few times I have ordered venison in the past, I was asked how I wanted it - which for venison everyone knows is either rare or medium rare. I was not asked, so assumed at least it was going to come pink in the middle. What I was served was a kind of medallion but a token nod to a Wellington - encased in a soggy, slightly raw, unappetizing pastry. (This is not described on the menu). The meat was overcooked and not even slightly pink in the middle, and the whole dish was rather a sad offering - especially considering the £26.90 price. Trying to impress with an artistic presentation, but definitely style over substance. The dish was served lukewarm and the service was slow and not particularly friendly. I complained politely but firmly about the venison and ordered Mac Cheese (which I thought a safe option) and this came within five minutes so must have been ready to go. It was again pretty awful, one solid mass (not soft and creamy at all) and not very hot. The Mac Cheese could more or less be picked up in one lump. The photo shows the venison and as can be seen, even if it had been worth eating, for the price, it wasn't exactly a hearty portion. At 699 calories, most people would probably need a side dish as the portion size is pretty meagre. One of the worst meals I have ever had in a supposedly high-end restaurant. After complaining about both dishes, the outcome was that the duty manager was called to the table and after a brief discussion, where I gave my opinion of the food in a quiet and measured way (no shouting, swearing or offensive personal comments) and was told to leave the premises. I was shocked at this action - surely an over- reaction? Isn't one of the roles of a manager to resolve conflicts to reach an amicable outcome? Unfortunately, it was very early (about 6:30 pm) and there was only one couple at a table far from mine, so no other diners could witness this action - I am sure the manager would have tried to resolve the situation in another way if there had been other diners nearby as it would not have been good for business.

I suspect this place prides and aims at gastro pub status as their benchmark. Room - We were in #12 an attic room, for the first night we felt it was quaint and nice but by the 2nd night it was wearing on us a bit being small, dark, very limited airflow and with extremely low ceilings so wasn't easy to traverse.. We also had an issue with the bathroom having no vanity area, no towel rail and the radiator in the bedroom made such a racket I thought we were above the kitchen exhausts. As an alternative view, my uncle and aunt stayed in one of the other rooms and loved it which was also cheaper than #12 for some strange reason. So overall, really pleased we picked this establishment, we would use it again and highly recommend it BUT perhaps we would suggest avoiding #12 :-)

When they told me what room I was going in and it was all male....I was like nah! The were prompt to change and gave me an all female room. The did say keep bedrooms clean, so you knew you wasn't going to get a cleaner every day to change your bedding hence why I saw long stringy hair in my bunk bed that I had to pick off. I enjoyed the breakfast especially a paticular Peanut Butter I was raving to the owner about. It was from Costco! Obviously you get all sort of people- but mainly a young crowd. The have a cute small living room with plenty of choice if you wanted to watch a DVD! Also coming into the entrance of Riverhouse their are lots of information on what to do in Cardiff and the rest of Wales. I love the fact Riverhouse is near the River Taff and really close to the city centre . It was a pleasent stay overall.

She asked again after flagging down someone. She eventually had to find the kitchen to get her tea. After the trays were dropped off we never saw our server again. Never came to clear the table, give us our bill, refill our teas, it was unbelievable. I was embarrassed that I had set up our tea at this place, with such poor service. And tea was 45 pounds per person, I would expect better service.

Since her room was the getting ready room, it was huge. There was a beautiful soaking tub with a TV in the bathroom. The shower comes from above and from the sides. There are no elevators or AC, since it is an old building, but they do have fans. They even have dyson hair dryers! That was a wonderful touch. The grounds are gorgeous. I kept hearing that Castle Combe is the most picturesque village in the county (no idea how big the county is). The buildings were very pretty to look at. The bride's family rented out the entire manor. Breakfast was amazing. They do eggs very well and it was nice to know no matter where I sat it was with people from the wedding. The drinks were also superb. The canapes were some of the best bites I had my entire time in the UK and the pate that came with dinner was to-die-for. The wedding itself was outside on the lawn, dinner was in the restaurant and the reception was upstairs. I did not expect that awesome upstairs space. There was a room off to the side that had late night snacks, an outside balcony that was huge to walk out into and then, of course, a bar on top of a room for dancing. This is definitely a picturesque place to spend a vacation. Everyone was super nice and I really enjoyed my stay.

The kind girl at the desk explained that the rooms are all different but mine was much smaller than what was advertised and she kindly moved us. The breakfast was phenomenal. They really do their best to cater to their guests and the manor is absolutely beautiful.
