I was recently laid off and need to hit the interview trail again. You may not think you need a suit in these days of LinkedIn applications and video interviews but feeling your best in a 20-year-old blazer and sweats cannot be faked. So when I called around to bespoke tailors in town, a new custom suit was going to be at least $2000! I thought, well maybe there's some bespoke zoom filters that remove 75 pounds and dress me to the nines. Luckily I remembered the OG Indy tailor Leon Tailoring. Walking in their expansive shop was like walking back in time, when there was a men's haberdashery on every corner and a porter named Chesapeake to your coat at the door. Okay that might be too far so think MadMen with today's latest styles. My guy Norman said he could fit my large belly and narrow shoulders into an off-the-rack suit in year-round wool for less than $1000. That included two fittings and adjustments. Free was Norman arguing with his fellow salesman over a pricing estimate. They sounded like an old married couple arguing over who said what, when in reality they each forgot something different. It was adorable but if I hadn't cleared my throat, they'd still be caught in some bickering causality loop. As of this review the suit arrived for the first fitting and it's fantastic. Great place to get tailored clothes! I bought a tux from here a number of years ago and came back this week to get suits for my Sons for a wedding. Both Norman and Larry were incredible. Had great conversations with both of them on two different days. They took the time to make sure that my son was measured correctly and that plans for the suit were considered. He did not push anything. He made suggestions for parts of the suit we needed, but if we didn't need them, it was no big deal. We got a great price on a great suit that will be tailored for my sons and altered when needed by fantastic artisans. This is a great little shop, it has been around Indianapolis for a very, very long time, and stand with a very high reputation. I was very pleased with this interaction and will be back there soon for more. Also, they mentioned that if someone is looking for a rental tuxedo for prom, they have great pricing for a prom tux. Update from my last review. Being so convenient to me and my work, I couldn't pass giving it another show even though they showed horrible customer service on the phone (see previous review). I brought in a casual jacket I wanted to be taken in. The guy that was helping me was very helpful and personal (definitely not the same guy I got on the phone). For those that know me, I am very small and skinny, so the man was suggesting that I try their products out and showed me a few of their jackets and suits while I was there. It was a bit too salesy for me, but I understand. I don't have the money to pay $$$$ on suits, so I'll never be purchasing from them. He was educational and explained different types of fabric and how they work differently, etc. He was very nice overall and the overall job was good. I was expecting a call from them for 4 days as they told me that they'd call when it was finished, but they never did, so I had to finally stop in and see if it had been done. It was somewhat pricey, at least in my opinion, for the minimal work that was done, but it was done well, and that's all that matters. Good place, just a bit too pricey for me. read more

My now husband and I looked high and low for the right suit for our beach wedding. He's 6'4 and 250 lbs so a harder fit. We stopped by Leon Tailoring and met Larry and that was all she wrote. He measured him properly and was able to order the suit color in his correct size plus altered it to fit him properly. It's a very high quality and classy looking suit. There is a distinct difference between buying a suit from here versus all the other suit places. Don't waste your time buying a lesser quality suit at say Men's Warehouse when you can do it right at Leon's Tailoring. Yes you will pay a little more but the quality and service more than outweighs itself. In my search for the perfect downtown tailor, I tried Leon's twice with maybe 6 different items that needed alterations. I wasn't particularly impressed with the quality of work, the high prices, or the aggressive sales pitches for their custom-made clothing. When I say "no thank you" to being fitted for a custom pencil skirt instead of the one I brought in for alteration, I really don't need to be asked again, and again, and again if I'm *sure* I don't want to check out the zillion fabrics they can use. Also, this is on a more personal note, but once the guy found out I worked in the Statehouse, he started name dropping legislators like that'd somehow impress me and make me want to buy the custom clothes. My suggestion to everyone that reads this review is to not buy shoes from Leon Tailoring that require you to place an order. My feet are very large and disproportionate, so I placed a great deal of confidence, time, and money in buying nice shoes from a company where I have previously shopped. As it turns out, my decision wasted valuable time and money. Not to mention, I felt like I wasn't treated properly as a customer. I'd encourage you to read my story to see for yourself. I bought a nice pair of shoes online for 1/3 of what I would've paid at Leon Tailoring and they were delivered to my door in 3 days (with free shipping). I have since found a new tailor for my dress clothes, which I believe to be better than Leon Tailoring, and I suggest that you give him a try before you invest your time and money with Leon Tailoring. Lee's Custom Tailoring will be receiving my time and money as there dress shirts are cheaper, and Master Lee makes better quality clothing. And finally, the time to make the clothing is a couple of weeks shorter than Leon's. I have bought a few custom dress shirts and a suit from Leon Tailoring over the past couple of years for job interviews and internship attire as these wardrobe items are essential. I recently graduated university and began to invest in my wardrobe after starting my new job in Indianapolis. The item at the top of my list was dress shoes as my company prefers us to dress on the nicer end of the business casual spectrum. I came into Leon Tailoring at the end of January inquiring about purchasing shoes, and was reluctant to find a size 15EEE shoe that fit me. One of the store owners, Larry, gave me a magazine to order shoes from a supplier - Johnston & Murphy. And I was able to find a couple expensive ($175 each) pairs of shoes, but I thought of this as an investment, so I didn't feel too bad putting down $200 while they were ordered. I was told that they should be in, certainly by the end of next week (I visited on a Saturday). The following week goes by and I haven't heard anything back from Leon Tailoring, so I called on a Monday afternoon and was told that they should be arriving soon. This process repeated itself for 4 weeks in total as I was called by Leon Tailoring at the end of February that my shoes were finally in. I went into the store as soon as I could and paid the remaining balance and finally had my shoes in hand. After getting home I opened up the boxes to find out that both of the shoes were wrong. One of the shoes was the correct style, but wrong colour. The other shoe had the correct colour, but wrong style. I quickly called the store and explained to them what was unboxed. I was told that the manufacturer sometimes changes the style of the specific shoe design depending on the time of the year for the reasoning behind my incorrect style shoes. But, Leon was reluctant to have me back in to get the correct colour shoe and did not seem interested in allowing me to return the incorrect style shoes. I returned to the store again to return both pairs of shoes and find out what went wrong. As it turns out, the store owner made a mistake in ordering the shoes for the incorrect colour and wasn't able to back up his promise that he'd be able to get another shoe for me in my size, so the manufacturer sent me a similar shoe in my size. I left both pairs of shoes with Leon Tailoring to allow them to return the items to the manufacturer without getting my money back as I was still interested in getting the pair of shoes that I originally ordered and I needed some time to figure out what to do with the other pair of shoes. I was told that the correct shoes would be ordered as soon as possible and be in within the following week (another Saturday shopping trip), if not, then they'd definitely be in on Monday after the following week. As it turns out, this was a lie, again! I called on that following Monday after waiting a week and was told that my shoe order had been bundled into a bulk order of shoes placed by Leon Tailoring for the Spring. I held out until 3 weeks after I returned the first pair of incorrectly ordering shoes before buying a nice pair of shoes online for 1/3 of the cost of the original pair of shoes as I had an important work event for which I wanted to look nice for. With this being the case, I was no longer in need of new shoes and felt that my business was not a high priority, so I called Leon's again and after I was told that my shoes had no arrived, I told them that they could cancel the order and return them, so I could get a full refund for the shoes that I originally purchases. This request was met with a large amount of resistance and the owner would not discuss the matter over the phone and demanded that I come to the store to get everything situated. A week later, the shoes were in and I went into the store and was able to get a refund for the full amount after having to put up with everything. read more

This is where i go for all my tailoring and suit needs. Larry will take care of you and have you looking good. Larry can be a talker, but he cares about the quality of his work. He may try to sell you additional items, but isn't bothered if you say no. Overall it is quality work done in a timely manner. I recommend going there. I have a two piece wedding dress I needed to get hemmed for my wedding. I went in to see if they can help me with measurements for my top. I told the woman I had pictures on what the designer needed I just needed a professional to help me. She seemed very disinterested in giving me any sort of help or guidance. Her reasoning verbatim: she didn't want to look "stupid". I felt as if there was a more professional reasoning she could have given me for not helping me with the measurements. I don't feel comfortable taking something as important as my wedding dress to a place like this if the worker shows no interest. read more

I made the mistake of considering Leon's for suit alterations. The guy came out from the back and mocked the suit and me having the nerve to need alterations. I was getting told basically how dare I bring some "I bet you bought it online" suit in for changes. I respect the elderly is why I let the barrage go. Good cop came out when I returned for pickup and tried to interest me in the pricey, staid Brooks Brothers looking suits they sell. Hard pass. Leon is a long-time local business that does quality work for fair prices. They have suits and ties and tops for women to shop for in house if you're interested. I went to get a couple items altered to fit me. The woman who assisted me was friendly and affirming, so I didn't feel awkward getting changed and coming out of the dressing room to pin my clothing (which I generally do). There was one item that fit me especially awkwardly, and she was honest about what they can and cannot do to make this item suit me --- which I appreciate! She wanted to ensure I was satisfied. What I hadn't realized is that, "your items should be done about Tuesday!" meant that's when I should come in. I assumed they'd call to inform you your items are ready, and they do not. So I had gone days and days awaiting the call that never came. But that's probably just my bad. If I had actually come on Tuesday, it would've been a very quick turn around to have my items! read more

A belated update to my earlier review of Leon's Tailoring. Part of the stitching on the lining of a coat they redid for me came out after only two months, and the coat was worn on less than 20 occasions during that time. If I was still in the area, I would bring the coat back so that Leon's could fix this, but now I'm over 1000 miles away and must take it to a new tailor. I really wanted to like this place, but I was disappointed with the quality of the relining of my coat. read more

I was in a wedding so of course I got an ill fitting bridesmaid's dress! I took it here to see if they could alter it - it was too small in the bust and I couldn't breathe when I zipped it. I was assisted by an awesome little old man who was such a character - but he was extremely knowledgeable about his craft and very upfront about what they would and wouldn't be able to do, and the potential outcomes of the alteration. Turnaround time was fast too...they were done in less than a week. When I got the dress back, I was so impressed with what they were able to do with so little to work with, my dress fit so much better and there was nothing that made it obvious the dress was altered. They did an excellent job. Walking into Leon's is like stepping back in time, I feel like this is where Don Draper would go to get his suits made. While it looks like they only do menswear, they do custom clothing for the ladies and alterations as well. The downtown location is extremely convenient for me, and I loved all the personal attention in their service, and attention to detail in their work. Very disappointed in my trip to Leon's. I brought in a shirt and a pair of slacks that I needed some slight modifications on for a wedding I was a groomsman in. Thinking it should be a simple task, I decided to try out Leon's. I was initially told that the shirt could not be altered at all due to the stitching, which I found later to be false due to the fact that all other groomsmen were able to get theirs tailored. With the pants, I asked for a hem and for the legs to be taken in. The hem ended up being uneven between the legs, and there was little to no evidence he took the legs in. While getting tailored, the gentleman measuring me was constantly trash talking the clothes I brought in, attempting to sell me on some of his tailor made shirts and suits instead. This was of very little help considering these clothes were picked out by the bride. I came in to pick up my clothes on the day I was asked to and ended up sitting there for nearly 45 minutes as they, I'm sure, did a rush job on the pants while at the same time telling me that they "we're looking for them". I got a discount off the price, but considering the hem fell out before I even got to the day of the event, I had them tailored elsewhere along with the shirt. read more

They were highly recommended, not sure why. I asked how long it would take to alter a pair of pants, simply take up the waist, the response, bring it in, they we can quote you a price. I said, I lost 65 pounds, might be going to a funeral later next week, I just need to know an estimate of how long doe sit typically take, :Bring it in and we can quote you a price" I said, price isn't an issue, I am looking for a timing estimate. I live quite aways from Leons, that didn't matter. If the one on one interaction isn't any more helpful, not sure this is the best place in Indy....... read more
